Lady Lions start Virginia trip with bang, roll past Charlottesville behind Cowburn’s 1-hitter, big offensive evening to move to 5-1 on season
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — For the first time in three years, the Lady Lions of Wellsville have made their way back down to Virginia for Spring Break, as they began a four-game, four-night set on Monday with a stop in Charlottesville.
Their start in their week-long stay in the Old Dominion saw an eruption take place on both sides of the field, with the bats coming alive right from the start, while on defense, a one-hit shutout formulated for Makenzie Cowburn in what was a dominant performance to help power Wellsville’s 21-0 shutout of Charlottesville.
The Lady Lions moved towards a 5-1 start to the season after the offense exploded with a 21-run, 19-hit effort that saw multiple hitters record at least a pair of hits. Among them: the team’s two pitchers — Cowburn and Marissa Ordway, with Cowburn having the biggest bat of the bunch, going a perfect 3-for-3 with a three-run blast to put towards a six RBI tenure.
Ordway added four hits of her own, driving in an RBI in the process to help the cause, while Sawyer Burke, Marley Adams, Brazen Beckwith, Lindsay Stuck and Hailey Lamphier each recorded a pair of hits, with Burke adding in an inside-the-park home run of her own for Wellsville, who started with an 8-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back.
In the circle, Cowburn handed out 15 chairs and walked just one to complete her one-hit shutout.
The Lady Lions are back in action tonight in Waynesboro for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
