Lady Lions blast three nukes, two by Dunbar, to power up 19-1 victory at Waynesboro, will close out Virginia trip at Western Albemarle tonight

WAYNESBORO, Va. — 24 hours removed after their first contest in Virginia, the bats once again came alive for the Lady Lions of Wellsville.

But this time, it may have been their best outing of offense yet this season, as the team blasted three homeruns, two off the bat of Makenna Dunbar to help fuel another triumphant effort by a 19-1 count over Waynesboro, Tuesday night.

The Lady Lions (6-1) brought together 19 runs across 15 total hits, including a massive evening from Dunbar, who went 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs — a towering two-run homer to help the team get started in the first inning, before blasting a three-run line drive to deep right center field to break the game wide open inside an eight-run third inning to eclipse double figures.

The Wellsville freshman added a two-run double inside the team’s six-run fourth inning to complete what was a seven RBI game.

Makenzie Cowburn added a home run of her own along the way inside the team’s breakout third inning, smashing a two-run blast of her own, while Marissa Ordway nearly made it five home runs altogether for the Lady Lions, scoring a pair of doubles that hit near the top of the fence each time. Helping further the cause was Marley Adams, who had three hits and drove in three RBI, while Brazen Beckwith and Emma Dunaway (three RBI) both had a pair of hits.

“Waynesboro’s pitcher was a quality pitcher, and our offense was electric tonight,” said Lady Lions coach Matt Burke.

In the circle, the win was given to Ordway, who struck out and walked a pair in her start that went through the fourth inning. Dunbar chipped in with two strikeouts and a walk in relief.

Wellsville will finish out their Virginia trip tonight with a 7 p.m. contest under the lights in Western Albemarle.
