Thursday Roundup: Lady Rebels silenced in 3rd quarter by New Life Christian in midst of 38-27 home defeat; C-G girls power up dominant 1st half to coast past host Addison

CUBA — The fight was on throughout the first half when the Lady Rebels of Cuba-Rushford battled from behind early to create even playing ground going into the locker room. But in the second half, New Life Christian had other plans in store for the rest of the night, as they held their opposition frozen in their tracks to take the lead, holding it all the way to the end to lock down a 38-27 road win on Thursday.

The Lady Rebels (5-2) kept pace alongside New Life Christian in the first 16 minutes on the hardwood, with the duo of Lily Tompkins and Lilly Farwell combining to record all 10 of the team’s points in the first quarter. In a second quarter that was filled with limited opportunities, Brynn Lavery made sure it was worthwhile for Cuba-Rushford, nailing a pair of triples to help end the half on a strong note by tying the game at 16 with New Life Christian.

But the momentum building end to the half ultimately ceased for the Lady Rebels, as New Life Christian came out swinging for the fences in the third quarter with a magnificent jaunt that permitted them to complete their narrow deficit and hurdle past Cuba-Rushford to regain an advantage that would remain in their possession for the remainder of the game, behind a scoreless 15-0 run.

Just three scorers found the statsheet for the Lady Rebels, with Lavery leading all scorers with her team-high 13 points. Tompkins finished with 10 points, while Farwell finished with the remaining four points.

Cuba-Rushford will travel to meet the Lady Lions of Wellsville on Monday at 7:30 p.m.

ADDISON — A powerful start in the opening eight minutes, paired alongside an all-balanced second quarter from the offense were two big building blocks that they put to good use over the road on Thursday, as they traveled for a visit to Addison and left town later on in the night with a 55-26 victory over the host Lady Knights.

The tone was set immediately by Canisteo-Greenwood (4-0) with Anna Mitchell’s pair of first quarter triples helping ignite a dominant start over Addison right out of the gate, providing a 17-7 run to claim the game’s first lead. Heading into the second quarter, the Lady Chargers then showcased some incredible offensive balance to continue keeping the Lady Knights off kilter, as seven different scorers all scored at least a bucket to record what was a 19-9 half-ending run to ultimately cement their advantage going forward.

The Lady Chargers defense went on to hold Addison to under 10 points in each of the four quarters of action while the offense saw three different scorers in return break the double-digit threshold along the way, with MacKenna Mullen and her game-high 16 points leading the way alongside five steals. Adding more help was an incredible outing from Bailey Mullen, who posted 14 points, 11 rebounds, eight steals and five assists. Anna Mitchell finished with 11 points, including three of the team’s five triples.

Adding to the special teams cause was Kora Button, who had eight big rebounds off the glass.

Up next, Canisteo-Greenwood will look to go for five straight wins to open the campaign tonight, as they head back home and welcome in Bolivar-Richburg for a 6 p.m. start.
