Friday Roundup: C-R traverses past tough defensive challenge from And/Whi, skyrocket towards 63-44 win behind big 3rd quarter; Wellsville, Ark-Can boys win to meet for IAABO Tournament title

CUBA — Bright and early Saturday morning, just as the sun begins to shine its bright light over the horizon, the Rebels of Cuba-Rushford will be hopping on a bus to head north for a special afternoon for basketball at Genesee Community College in Batavia.

But before that, they were searching for a big burst of momentum to take over the road with them. They foresaw a chance to do just that against Andover/Whitesville — a team possessing an exceptional display of defense, on Friday in the Wighthouse.

The Rebels witnessed that almost immediately out of the gate, as Andover/Whitesville stood tall and hung right with the hosts in white and maroon across all 16 minutes of play, with the defense making a plethora of big plays to fuel their offense towards big success. Because of their dynamic stand, Andover/Whitesville remained well within reach of Cuba-Rushford, trailing by a single point going into the locker room.

Momentum was in their favor. But in the second half, the Rebels presented a new remedy — giving Andover/Whitesville a taste of their own medicine.

Commencing in the third quarter, Cuba-Rushford erased it, as they turned their primary focus to their defense by buckling down and keeping their opposition locked up, taking what was a one-point lead and extending upon it in insurmountable fashion with a gigantic jaunt that allowed the Rebels to push towards a 3-0 start to their campaign with a 63-44 home win.

“Jimmy (Joyce) had his guys ready to go and they really hammered us on the boards in the first half. They limited our easy buckets because of that,” said Rebels coach Pat Wight. “the second half, we cleaned up the rebounding and really defended well, and we were able to get out in transition to finally get those easy buckets we were looking for. Carter Brown was a real spark off the bench tonight. We had three guys with at least 15 points, and that’s always a good thing when the ball is moving around to find open guys. I’m very pleased to be 3-0. Andover/Whitesville is going to be a tough out in that D bracket. They have an unbelievably high ceiling, and they will be fun to watch the rest of the year when they get healthy.”

Before the epic third quarter jaunt came to full fruition, Cuba-Rushford (3-0) was put on their feet early by Andover/Whitesville, who rose to the occasion right out of the gate behind some stellar defense, turning forced turnovers into some big points from the hands of Ethan Warriner and Colton Calladine right away to formulate a 10-2 run of the Rebels past midway in the opening frame.

The hosts countered with some half-court pressure right before the quarter reached its conclusion, as they forced a couple of key turnovers against Andover/Whitesville (2-3) in return, with a hard-working basket inside by Donovan Breckenridge helping set up a run that saw Cuba-Rushford score six of the frame’s last eight points.

With the Rebels now back on their trail at full speed, Andover/Whitesville attempted to dig a deeper hole by extending it out to five. But a triple from Carter Brown off the bench and a breakaway finish to the rim by Adam Roe, the Rebels were not going to be denied a 17-17 deadlock, as the two Rebels shooters capitalized on back-to-back drives to force the tie down the stretch in the second quarter.

Finn Ricketts ultimately granted the Rebels their first lead of the game while riding the momentum wave down to the wire, ultimately remaining on top with a 21-20 halftime lead.

The surf favored the Rebels going into the second half, and with it, came a riptide.

Cuba-Rushford began to move fast and furiously, with Brown’s hot hand from downtown, along with a couple more forced turnovers against Andover/Whitesville, all helping set up shop for a devastating 9-0 run to lay claim on the game’s largest lead of 12 points at that juncture of the third quarter.

Cuba-Rushford went on to finish up a 19-8 run within the frame to assume total command of their destiny going into the last eight minutes, putting everything together one last time for a 23-point encore in the fourth quarter to secure their victory for good.

Roe led all scorers for the Rebels with his game-high 19 points, pulling down 15 rebounds in the process to cap off his double-double. Brown, along with Finn Ricketts, finished with 16 points each, with Ricketts garnering six rebounds and six assists to fuel the special teams cause even more.

For Andover/Whitesville, Vinny Joyce and Colton Calladine powered the offense behind their team-leading 13-point performances. James Miller-Young chipped in with nine points of his own. The team will look to bounce back on Tuesday with another road trip, visiting Houghton Academy at 7:30 p.m.

Cuba-Rushford will now hit the road for an early afternoon tussle with the Oakfield-Alabama Hornets at Genesee Community College in Batavia today, commencing at 11:30 a.m.

Wellsville edges out Finney, Ark-Can goes past B-R to set up IAABO Championship

WELLSVILLE — It can’t be a basketball season without the iconic Allegany County IAABO Tournament.

On Friday, that time for one of the winter’s biggest events on the hardwood officially came when two tournament newcomers: Arkport-Canaseraga and Bolivar-Richburg, battled it out to open up the newest installment of the two-day twinbill, while C.G. Finney and host Wellsville — two mainstays in the annual event for so many years, duked it out in the first day’s nightcap immediately following.

When it was all said and done at the end of the night, Arkport-Canaseraga and Wellsville both avoided late pushes from their respective opponents down the stretch in the last eight minutes to set up this year’s Championship game the following day, with the Wolves taking down the Wolverines with a 61-53 victory, while the Lions edged out the Falcons by a 55-51 count to traverse back up to .500 on the young campaign.

To open the festivities, the Wolves were on fire right from the opening tip against Bolivar-Richburg (3-2), as their offense unloaded the firepower with a mammoth 23-9 run across the first eight minutes of play. Despite the early deficit, the Wolverines would not let it faze them, as they remained in the heat of battle from the second quarter on, fighting and clawing their way back to climb back within as little as a pair of points at one point.

But when the opportunity arose to put the game away, the Wolves made the most of the opportunity from the charity stripe, as they knocked down a handful of clutch shots to secure their victory down the stretch.

“I’m incredibly proud of the boys,” said Wolverines coach Justin Thomas. “I didn’t know at first if I could convince them to see the forest through the trees. We were down 15 at one point and then we basically won the rest of the game from that point on. We cut it down to two at one point, but we put them in a foul situation and they knocked down their shots when they needed to. They ended up staving off our pressure in the end, but I’m really proud of the way we were able to battle back. Any team in this position could have rolled over, but we didn’t.”

The Wolverines were paced by Waide Karnuth down low, as he took charge of the paint by sinking a team-high 18 points. Right behind him was Landon Barkley, who concluded with 17 points of his own. Mason Baldwin recorded six points.

Arkport-Canaseraga was led by the electric Caden Carey, who was on point all night long with his game-high 33 points. Devin Moran had 14 points of his own to contribute, while Alex Vilkhu had 12.

As for the Lions in the nightcap, they were tasked with holding off a late C.G. Finney rally down the stretch after previously starting the battle with the game’s first lead in the opening quarter, as they used a strong spurt of defense in the same swing to hold the Falcons to just two made field goals. From the second quarter on, the two teams traded barbs back-and-forth leading into an exciting fourth quarter finish.

A finish that Ty Vogel took complete advantage of.

The Wellsville senior had the team’s hottest hand against the Falcons, as he strung together a quartet of second half three-pointers that helped change the complexion of the game, handing the Lions (2-2) their largest lead of the game — an 11-point advantage. But the Falcons remained within a stone’s throw, as they closed the gap down to as little as four points, but in the end, the hosts in white and orange managed to hang on and secure the second vacancy in the IAABO Tournament’s Championship game.

“When you shoot deep like Finney does, there is always a chance to cut a lead. They made some big ones late while we tried to have longer possessions that got us out of our rhythm. I was really glad to see us pull out the win though,” said Lions coach Tom Muska. “It’s great to have a kid like Ty who can match a team point for point for an entire quarter. When he gets confidence in his shot like he had tonight, it’s really hard to stop. We’ll need that against Arkport-Canaseraga, because they are as disciplined of a team I’ve watched play so far. They have a couple of guards who can really shoot and score it. I’m looking forward to what tomorrow brings.”

Vogel wound up leading all scorers for the Lions with his game-high 18 points. Aiden Cowburn followed behind with 10 points, while Trent Green and Nick Germain-Tardieu chipped in with eight and six points, respectively.

Finney was led by Ethan Krog, who had five of the team’s 10 total three-pointers in the midst of his game-high 26-point performance.

The conclusion of this year’s IAABO Tournament will begin at 12 p.m. this afternoon back in the Lion’s Den, as Bolivar-Richburg and C.G. Finney go one-on-one in the Consolation round, while Arkport-Canaseraga and Wellsville will do battle for this year’s crown later on in the day, in a 2 p.m. tip-off.

Houghton Academy 43, The GOW School 36

HOUGHTON — Following a tough loss to the hands of crosstown rival Fillmore back during the middle of the week, the Houghton Academy Panthers wanted to ensure that their bounce back would be of tremendous quality. Friday night back home against The Gow School, the Panthers did just that by overcoming a slow first quarter start to run the table across the second half, pulling away and towards what was a 43-36 victory.

Houghton Academy (3-1) found themselves behind the eight ball early on in the opening sequences to the Gow School, as their opposition rode the lightning from downtown behind three big three-pointers out of the gate, putting it towards what ultimately morphed into a 14-7 first quarter lead for the visitors.

The Panthers would chip away at the deficit across the second half, as they remained within reach, down by a 23-17 count going into the break.

In the second half, the hosts in white and blue began to find their rhythm on both ends of the floor, as the duo of Josh Davidson and Jack Prentice guided the offense forward with a 15-7 third quarter run — the team’s strongest offensive stand of the night, that gave them the lead to work with going into the final stretch.

Genesee Valley/Belfast 50, Hinsdale 22

BELFAST — There were some bumps in the road along the way on Friday, but despite it, the Genesee Valley/Belfast boys were able to ward off a tough first half fight brought on by visiting Hinsdale, turning up the heat at both ends of the hardwood in the last 16-minute session to rocket their way towards victory over the Bobcats by a 50-22 count in Belfast.

It was a tale of two halves for Genesee Valley/Belfast (3-1) through all 32 minutes of action on the hardwood, with the first half featuring a difficult challenge brought on by Hinsdale. The Bobcats would get as close as two points following a long 9-0 run in the middle of the second quarter, but the hosts in white and black were able to garner an advantage as large as 12 when time expired to go into the locker room.

The momentum they had created would ultimately reach a boiling point upon their return.

In the second half, it was the defense that helped push all the chips to the center of the table for a complete flipping of the script, as they froze Hinsdale (1-4) in place for the remaining 16 minutes of basketball left to played, netting a gargantuan 21-5 second half run to close out the night strong.

Amidst the combined run, an 11-1 jaunt in the third quarter that allowed the hosts to remain firmly in control.
