BOYS BASKETBALL

Friendship/Scio 55, Hinsdale 22

FRIENDSHIP — Three different Friendship/Scio scorers each eclipsed the 10-point plateau to help aid a strong offensive showing to open their 2024-25 campaign, as they used a strong start along with a powerful entrance to the second half to set the tone against the visiting Hinsdale Bobcats with what was a 55-22 home victory in Friendship on Wednesday.

“We saw some really good things tonight. Our third quarter was great, and I’m really happy for the guys to be able to put that together,” said Friendship/Scio coach Dillon McFall. “We had a hard time last year putting the ball in the basket, but tonight it was nice to get into the mid-50s. All 11 guys got some time tonight, and it was nice to see a majority of them get some scoring done as well.”

After cementing their presence across the first half of play with a 21-7 halftime lead against the Bobcats, Friendship/Scio (1-0) buckled down and ensured their lead remained firmly intact with an explosive 28-point third quarter, as they outscored their opposition by a 28-9 count to break away for good.

Helping aid the offensive efforts for Friendship/Scio was Jerimiah Brown, who finished with a team-high 12 points to pair with four rebounds. Aiden Golden and Deacon Brown each had 10 points, with Golden recording five steals along the way.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Fillmore 56, Avoca-Prattsburgh 36

FILLMORE — The first game of the season, no matter the sport, can be used as an early barometer to indicate where exactly a team stands going forward. Wednesday night marked the very first night for the Lady Eagles of Fillmore to take the hardwood against a tough Class D customer in the Avoca-Prattsburgh Lady Titans.

There can be, of course, plenty of question marks to go around, but with a ton of aid from Emalyn Mucher, Mattie McCumiskey and a massive second half from Morghyn Ross, all the ingredients for success meshed together sublimely to create a dynamic season-opening victory inside The Rock for the Lady Eagles, as they rolled past the Lady Titans with a 56-36 victory.

“There were a lot of unknowns going into this game. This was the first time this group set foot on the floor together in a regular season game, so initially I didn’t know what to expect, especially with an opponent of quality like Avoca-Prattsburgh,” said Lady Eagles coach Tom Parks. “We didn’t have a big X’s and O’s game-plan. We stressed being aggressive, playing with energy and confidence and being smart on defense. We hoped the basketball part would take care of itself if we had those pieces.”

The Lady Eagles (1-0) soared right out of the gate strong behind the efforts of Emalyn Mucher and Mattie McCumiskey, as the two shooters combined to record 34 of the team’s 56 total points, allowing them to set up shop with a 14-7 lead in the first quarter before finishing the opening half strong on a 16-6 run of Avoca-Prattsburgh.

Then, it was Morghyn Ross’ turn to deal for the hosts in white and green, as she conducted business of her own by scoring all 11 of her points in the second half to help push Fillmore towards another lengthy run of the Lady Titans across the third quarter, cementing their first victory of the young campaign along the way.

Mucher knocked down three triples out of Fillmore’s five in total from downtown to assemble what was a game-high 21-point performance, pairing them with four assists. McCumiskey was right behind her with 13 points and 11 rebounds, completing her first double-double. In addition to her 11 points, Ross also gathered three steals.

For Avoca-Prattsburgh, Evelyn Travis and Kyra Farley each had eight points to lead the offense.

The Lady Eagles are back in action Monday night right back on their home floor, hosting Arkport-Canaseraga at 7 p.m.

Mullen and Mitchell helped set the table early on for the Lady Chargers (1-0), as the two combined to record all 19 points in the frame — 12 of them off the hand of Mullen to set up a close 19-14 lead against the Lady Wolves through the first eight minutes of play.

Despite the visitors in black and teal remaining hot on their trail, Canisteo-Greenwood received some separation in the second quarter, with the efforts of five different Lady Chargers all helping glue together a 17-9 half-ending jaunt, with Mitchell and Mullen combining once again to net three more threes from long range.

When it was all said and done, each Lady Charger posted five triples on the night.

The victory was later cemented in the third quarter when the hosts in white and red, behind the hot hand of Mitchell once more, established a 13-6 run of Arkport-Canaseraga to take a 49-29 lead into the last eight minutes of play.

WRESTLING

Fillmore/Keshequa 36, Alfred-Almond 30

ALMOND — After Alfred-Almond assembled a fiery start with four wins in the first seven matches, a resilient and bounce back finish was emphasized by Fillmore/Keshequa on Wednesday, as they closed out their visit to the home of the Eagles with three straight wins, including a massive victory for Garrett Hodgson at the very end to complete a 36-30 victory in their first match on the mat.

Fillmore/Keshequa bookended the match with victories, scoring six wins in total, with the battle commencing with a 131-pound victory for Ryan Vedder over Alfred-Almond’s Jaylon Mikko deep into the second period, coming up with a pinfall victory with nearly a minute left to record the first six points of the night.

Alfred-Almond then followed with victories in three of the next four matches, all via forfeit, with Peyton Barnes (138 pounds), Cole Briggs (152 pounds) and Zach Bloxsom (160 pounds) all recording victories. In between the triumphs, Fillmore/Keshequa collected their second victory in rapid fashion from Kalen Beardsley at 145 pounds, as he defeated Tanner Ledbetter in just 37 seconds to give them a 12-6 lead back.

In the midst of a pair of double forfeits shared between the two teams, the point exchange continued in back-and-forth fashion across the next three scheduled matches, with Ryan Benedict adding another win — the first in his Varsity career, for Fillmore/Keshequa at 170 pounds, pinning William Levey at the 3:51 mark.

Matt Tuller (190 pounds) and Cohen Cumberbatch (285 pounds) followed with forfeit wins for the Eagles to score a 30-18 lead heading down the home stretch.

Fillmore/Keshequa was able to put the finishing touches on three big victories to close out the match, with Eli Voss (108 pounds) and Craig Swift (116 pounds) recorded back-to-back forfeit wins before Hodgson delivered the match-sealing victory at 124 pounds for the visitors, registering a humongous pinfall win at 1:14 over Alfred-Almond’s Thomas Davidson to finish the job.

“We won all four of our contested matches on the mat and added a couple of forfeits,” Fillmore/Keshequa coach Jarrett Vosburg said. “Our Seniors Ryan and Kalen got us going early after we got the luck of the draw with Vedder at 131. Ryan Benedict then came on and scored his first Varsity win at 170 and then managed to tie the match at 30 down the stretch with three more big wins before Garrett scored the match win for us. Overall, we have lots of things we can clean up before our next action on Saturday, but it was nice to get the season kicked off on a positive note.”

Coming up on December 18, Fillmore/Keshequa will return to regular season action for their first home match of the season, as they host Avoca-Prattsburgh/Hammondsport in Fillmore at 6 p.m.
