Friday Roundup: Wellsville rules night as both baseball, softball fight back to deliver comeback wins over C-R, Our Lady of Mercy; Polk shines for B-R track with four wins against C-G, Salamanca

WELLSVILLE — With another defeat to the hands of Portville now in the rearview mirror, the Lions of Wellsville were destined to make sure that their tenure before the Spring Break, would end on a positive one on Friday.

With the Rebels of Cuba-Rushford in town for their first of two games with the defending Class B2 Champions, they looked to provide a similar response of their own doing as well. That would show when they grabbed an early lead of Wellsville after a scoreless first frame of action, scoring the first four runs of the game.

But then, a burst. The Lions responded in a big way.

It all began with a bottom of the fourth inning that tied the game up with the Rebels. With a scoreless outing of defense afterthefact, the offense went right back to work in taking the lead away from their visiting opposition for good, scoring five massive runs in the fourth inning to pull ahead and for good, en route towards a 10-5 home victory in the Lion’s Den.

“It was a nice bounce back game from Portville,” said Lions coach Tom Delahunt. “We started out slow, but we got the bats heated up. We didn’t have any errors either, so we played a great defensive game and then got the key hits when we needed them. Cody (Costello) got his first Varsity win on the mound, and had two doubles. It was a big game that we got from him. We were missing a couple of key guys with the break coming up, but we battled through the adversity, especially late in the game.”

After both teams issued a scoreless first inning out of the gate, the hits began to mount up on both sides, with Cuba-Rushford (1-4) leading the way. The Rebels came together to score the first four runs in the second and third innings, led by way of Benson McCumiskey and Aiden Clement, who led the offense with two hits and two RBI each.

With a 4-0 lead in hand to control, the Lions (2-2) now aimed to provide a response of their own. They went on to do just that with a game-tying bottom half of the third inning led by a lead-off double by Cody Costello. He would come in later on off a deep triple from Jere Havens to put the hosts on the board. As time went by, Wellsville worked their way towards a 4-4 tie with Cooper Brockway providing the game-tying RBI on a single.

The momentum created by the team in black and orange carried into the fifth inning, where the comeback was completed with a five-run fourth that propelled them in front of Cuba-Rushford, and then some, holding a 9-4 lead that they were able to maintain for the rest of the game.

In addition to his first career Varsity win on the mound, Costello would power the Wellsville bats with a pair of doubles, while Havens concluded with two hits of his own including his RBI triple. In addition, Brockway added two hits and two RBI, while Dylan Culver had two hits of his own, driving in a run. Costello would provide three strikeouts and a walk to spark his win on the rubber.

On the other side, Cuba-Rushford saw Logan Lewis and Noah Siegel contribute some added help with two hits each at the plate. Jon White struck out four and walked four in his three-inning start for the Rebels.

Downtown at Tullar Field, the Lady Lions of Wellsville faced a similar situation themselves when they had to fight their way back from behind after Our Lady of Mercy provided a big five-run frame to take the lead away in the beginning stages.

But not long after, they would counter their spark with a massive firework of their own, as they buckled down and delivered a humongous 11-run bottom half of the third that saw five different Lady Lions score at least a pair of hits at the plate, as they powered up a rebound 18-9 home win under the lights.

“We were down early, and it was nice to see our team battle back,” said Lady Lions coach Matt Burke. “We swung the bats extremely well tonight, and you could see that our players were focused. Mercy has a lot of good softball players, and that is a quality win for us against them. I’m really proud of our ladies for the fight they showed tonight to battle back.”

Both teams would exchange a lead through the first inning of play, with Wellsville (4-1) having the final word with a four-run stanza. Like the opening frame, the two teams once again saw their offenses clash one more time in the third, after the defenses held one another in check.

Our Lady of Mercy took the lead away from the Lady Lions in the top half, scoring a five-run outing to take a 6-4 lead. But the go-ahead frame would only last for a half inning, as the hosts fought right back with the biggest of punches in the evening — an 11-run doubling up of Our Lady of Mercy, a frame that saw them speed away for good behind what was an 17-hit effort at the plate.

Leading that charge was Brazen Beckwith, who had four hits. Makenzie Cowburn blasted three doubles, and drove in three runs in the process to further the cause. Emma Dunaway and Marley Adams each had three hits to chip in with, Dunaway driving in two additional runs while Adams stole two bases. Rounding off was Makenna Dunbar, who had two hits to contribute.

In the circle, the win belonged to Marissa Ordway across the first three innings, as she fanned three and walked three. Dunbar added in three strikeouts and four walks in relief.

The Wellsville boys are now off until after the Spring Break, when they return on April 19 with a 5 p.m. road trip to Canandaigua, while the Lady Lions will renew their seasonal trip to Virginia, which will consist of four straight games against Class A schools, beginning with a 6 p.m. contest against Charlottesville on Monday.

Polk scores four wins to propel B-R boys, B-R girls fall

BOLIVAR — Spring Break was on the horizon, Friday night. For Rudy Polk, it was a final chance to provide some more noise before heading into the week-long pause. Like Wednesday’s home meet, the Wolverines senior exploded towards victory once again, scoring four first place finishes, two from each side of the meet, to power up another stellar meet for the Bolivar-Richburg boys.

The Wolverines had 12 first place victories in all when they defeated both Canisteo-Greenwood (75-61), and Salamanca (83-51) in what was originally cast as their season opener before inclimate weather pushed the meet to Friday night.

Polk led the team with four individual victories, with two coming on the track in the dashing events — the 100 (11.5) and 200 (23.7) dashes respectively, before taking his talents to the sand bunker in the field with his last two wins coming in the long jump (20-1.5) and triple jump (38-2). In addition, Ethan Coleman, Hunter Stuck and Lloyd Kinnicutt all added a pair of wins each themselves to help the cause.

Coleman gathered a win in each end of the meet, with triumphs in the 400 sprint (56.9) and from the field, topping out with the highest height in the pole vault (10-0). Stuck collected a sweep of both hurdling events once more for the Wolverines, garnering medals in the 110 (18.2) and 400 hurdles (1:01.9) respectively, while Kinnicutt brought out the brooms himself in both throwing events, winning in the shot put (44-11) and discus (114-6).

Logan Pforter would have the teams last individual win, garnering it in the 3200 run (12:50.9). Bolivar-Richburg would also pick up a 5:10.9 winning time in the 1600 relay.

On the girls side, the Lady Wolverines fell to both Canisteo-Greenwood (83-40), and Salamanca (81-43), collecting just two first place finishes, both from the field by Kyla Gayton and Nadia Baldwin. Gayton would go on to record the winning height of 4-5 in the high jump, while Baldwin provided a medaling 13-7 distance in the sand, in the long jump.

Bolivar-Richburg is now off until after the break, as they join alongside Cuba-Rushford for a trip to Wellsville on April 21, in a 5 p.m. meet.
