Thursday Roundup: Portville boys and girls sweep, spoil Wellsville’s season opener also against C-R, GV/Belfast; Sisson helps fuel Fillmore tennis secure 4-1 win over Houghton Academy
WELLSVILLE — Neither rain nor chilly temperatures could slow down opening day at the track on Thursday, as the Wellsville boys and girls squads welcomed three different schools into town for their first competition of the 2022 campaign, facing Portville, Cuba-Rushford and Genesee Valley/Belfast.
All four teams saw a great amount of success go their way, but none more than the Portville Panthers, who went on to sweep both sides of the meet with first place overall finishes for both teams, spoiling Wellsville’s season opener in the process with eight first place finishes for the boys, and 12 first place finishes for the girls.
Wellsville would have the honor of finishing second overall, with the boys team recording five first place finishes to power a 62.5 point performance in their season debut. Leading the way was Grady Ball, who swept both throwing events in the field, medaling in the shot put (32-5) and discus (77-4). JT Mariotti, along with Portville’s Riley Horsley, came up with the winning height in the pole vault (8-3). On the track, Ben Jordan and Eli Brophy took the honors in the distance events with wins in the 1600 (5:27.9) and 3200 (12:33.3) runs respectively.
On the girls side, they would score 72.5 points in their second place finish overall, with four different Lady Lions recording first place finishes, including their lone relay win from the team of Brooklyn Stisser, Alyssa Dorrough, Harmony Brantley and Carina Kling in the 400 meter relay (56.5). Individually, Dorrough and Stisser provided Wellsville’s last three wins from the field, with Dorrough sweeping both the shot put (30-0) and discus (85-8), while Stisser garnered the winning distance in the long jump (13-10).
Cuba-Rushford would collect a third place overall finish, with the boys team leading the way behind three first place finishes and a 52.5 point effort. Noah Siegel would have a hand in all three of the wins, two of them individually by way of the hurdling events — the 110 (17.8) and 400 hurdles (1:04.5). Siegel would also race the final leg in the team’s winning 400 relay (49.6), joining wiuth Brayden Lavery, Alex Baron and Breckham Hunt.
As for the Lady Rebels, they recorded a 13-point third place finish behind numerous secondary finishes.
Genesee Valley/Belfast rounded out the day with a fourth place finish, scoring one first place finish overall from Harley Haas in the long jump (18-10) to pace the boys team, who recorded 29 points behind several secondary finishes. The Lady JagDogs as a team recorded 12 points.
All three teams are now off until after the Spring Break, including the Lions who will face both Canisteo-Greenwood and Fillmore when they return April 19 for a 5 p.m. meet. Cuba-Rushford will return to Wellsville along with Bolivar-Richburg a couple days later for a 5 p.m. meet on April 21.
On the same day, Genesee Valley/Belfast marks their return, as they join Friendship/Scio and Houghton Academy for quad-meet festivities at Houghton College, as they take on host Fillmore.

BOYS TENNIS
Fillmore 4, Houghton Academy 1
HOUGHTON — After starting their season on the court off on a dominant note earlier this week, the Eagles of Fillmore went on and kept the momentum in their favor before Spring Break begins to kick into gear, as they wrapped up one more victory with the weekend on the horizon by a 4-1 count over “visiting” Houghton Academy inside Houghton College, on a rainy Thursday night.
Perhaps the battle of the day took place right in the first singles match between Houghton Academy’s Alex Fraile and Fillmore’s Carter Sisson. The two foes went back and forth, trading the first two sets with one another. In the final set of their matchup, Sisson would go on to finish off a rally that saw him go down by a 4-1 count, scoring the next five games in his favor to pull off the win.
“Houghton has a lot of inexperienced players, but we practice side by side with them at the Houghton courts, and we’ve been watching them steadily get better,” said Eagles coach Randy Crouch. “First singles was a great battle. Alex is really consistent, and he gets to everything. Carter changed gears and got a little more patient during the second set, and in the third he battled back to win. Eben continued his fantastic playh, and our doubles teams showed a good amount of improvement.”
Eben Schilke added one last singles victory for the Eagles (2-0), as he defeated Houghton Academy’s Caleb Hilshire in straight sets with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout win. Fillmore would also provide a doubles sweep in straight sets, as the first doubles team of Henry Decker and Joe Derck (6-2, 6-1) defeated Katharinia Held and Josh Paschalis, while Layton Sanasith and Noah Strickland came away with a straight set shutout by a 6-0, 6-0 count over Ava Harrison and Lucy Lui.
The Panthers (1-1) were able to scavenge one victory in the match, as Sam Winkens battled his way towards victory in a 6-3, 6-4 decision over Fillmore’s Marcus Wolfer at third singles.
Both teams are now off until after Spring Break, as Fillmore gets set to host Wellsville at Houghton College on April 19 in a 5 p.m. first serve, while Houghton Academy travels to Cuba-Rushford for a 5 p.m. contest on April 25.
