Monday Roundup: Vogel, Haggerty assist Lions in starting new week off right with home victory over Red Jacket; Wellsville softball outduels Fredonia in battle of defending Sectional champions

WELLSVILLE — With the conditions outdoors going from summer-like going into the weekend, to an early-Spring freeze coming back out of it, it can become quite a challenging adjustment for teams to make. But for the Lions of Wellsville, there was no problem whatsoever, as they started on the absolute strongest of notes against visiting Red Jacket on Monday and never looked back, racing towards a 30-2 home win in the Lion’s Den.

Wellsville (4-3) wasted no time striking while the iron was hot in the opening frame of the play against Red Jacket, as the offense went up and down their entire lineup to create a 13-run frame. One that saw 10 of those runs scored with no out on the board, which allowed the hosts to set the tone permanently going forward.

The Lions were led by Ty Vogel at the plate, going 4-for-5 with two doubles, six RBI and four runs scored. Gavin Haggerty also recorded four hits, driving in four and scoring three times. Karson Grover and Aiden Cowburn each had three hits and recorded four RBI.

On the mound, Logan Dunbar was credited with the win behind three strikeouts in his two inning start.

Wellsville will look to carry the momentum into Friday night, as they head for St. Bonaventure to take on the Olean Huskies to close out their two-game set this season. First pitch is slated for a 5 p.m. start.

Bolivar-Richburg 8, Coudersport (PA) 2

COUDERSPORT, Pa. — As of late, Trey Buchholz has ignited a strong flame not only from the pitcher’s mound, but also with his big bat. He had a swing that started off their last battle against Hornell back on Friday, going to the fence for a lead-off triple.

The Bolivar-Richburg senior once again made his impact apparent after the weekend in the team’s next road trip down below the border to Coudersport, where he provided another big blast to help open the scoring in the top of the third. With the swing of his bat, the Wolverines maintained position in the driver’s seat from start to finish, flying towards an 8-2 road win to get back to .500 on the season.

“Trey had an excellent outing on the mound, and Reiss (Gaines) did his job to close it,” Wolverines coach Dustin Allen said. “We got a contribution from our bats all the way through tonight, which was big. Coudersport put a little pressure on us in the sixth, but Reiss did a great job getting us out of that jam to keep them held still. It’s a nice way to start the week.”

Both teams traded scoreless barbs in the first two innings before Bolivar-Richburg (3-3) broke the ice with a bang from Buchholz. In the top of third with two runners on, Buchholz slammed a shot into the outfield deep enough to reach third on a triple to score both runs. An RBI from Aydin Sisson moments later would ultimately find Buchholz in to score, wrapping up a 3-0 lead.

The lead would remain until the visitors in red and black added on with another run in the fourth, with Buchholz scoring his third RBI on a grounder into the infield, plating James Margeson along the way. While the defense was maintaining their part, Bolivar-Richburg recorded one last impact inning in the sixth, led by Buchholz and his final RBI, as the team strung together a four-run stanza to extend their lead out to eight.

Coudersport would apply some late pressure down the stretch with their first two runs of the game, plating them on an RBI triple and a fielder’s choice into the infield. The Bolivar-Richburg defense would hold down the fort one last time to keep the Falcons at bay, springing back to .500 after the rebound win.

Buchholz was awarded the win on the hill, fanning one and walking two while holding Coudersport to just three hits. At the plate, he went 2-for-4 with his two-run triple, four total RBI and a run scored. Margeson and David Baldwin each tallied two hits, while Caden Allen had a double and RBI to pitch in.

The Wolverines are now off until their next battle Thursday night under the lights, as they prepare to host Friendship/Scio in a 7 p.m. first pitch.

Cuba-Rushford 17, Andover/Whitesville 4 (F-5)

CUBA — Although Andover/Whitesville continued to fight until the very end, the Rebels of Cuba-Rushford came out swinging for the fences on Monday to start the new week on the diamond, as they scored all 17 of their runs in the first three innings of play to set the tone on offense, as they strolled their way towards victory by a 17-4 count in five innings.

“We swung the bats well again tonight on a cold and wet night. It was good to jump out and really get a nice lead. We went up 13-0 and Andover/Whitesville answered with four runs. They never quit. We made some nice plays defensively, and we’re looking to be settling in nicely as a group.” said Rebels coach Pat Wight.

After a 1-0 lead during their first at-bats got them started, the Rebels (3-2) kept their foot down on the gas pedal in the second, going through their entire batting rotation in full and then some, scoring 12 runs off 10 total hits in the frame. Three different hitters for Cuba-Rushford all recorded at least a pair of hits, with Preston Bilotta’s perfect 3-for-3 leading the pack, totaling two RBI and two runs scored. Braeden Wight drove in four runs off his two hits, while Caleb Root had two hits and three runs scored.

Jacob Smith rounded off the hitting with a double, three RBI and four runs scored for the hosts, who saw Eli Sleggs garner the win with three strikeouts and six walks.

Andover/Whitesville (1-2) posted all four of their runs in the top half of the third, using baserunning to their biggest advantage. CJ Estep was the recipient of the team’s lone hit, earning a single while scoring a run. Colton Calladine scratched a run across himself to help further the cause. On the mound, Layton Miller struck out two and walked two in his two-inning start.

Both teams are back on the diamond Wednesday night, as Cuba-Rushford plays host to Hinsdale in a 5 p.m. first pitch, while Andover/Whitesville looks to rebound back home in Andover with a visit from Genesee Valley/Belfast at 6 p.m.

Genesee Valley/Belfast 10, Hinsdale 0 (F-5)

BELFAST — Thai Norasethaporn was lights out for Genesee Valley/Belfast on Monday, as the senior kept visiting Hinsdale at bay across a two-hit complete game on the hill, helping provide energy for the offense along the way in the first two innings to set the pace in their 10-0 blank of the Bobcats in Belfast.

All 10 of Genesee Valley/Belfast’s (1-4) runs came straight in the first two innings of play, starting the day with a 2-0 lead in their opening at-bats to begin setting Hinsdale off balance. With it, the momentum shifted into the second inning where it completely tipped in their favor all the way to the end, as they used some key hits and some clutch baserunning to deliver an eight-run frame that allowed them to pull away towards their first win of the season.

“It was nice to finally get one for the start of the season,” said GV/Belfast coach Kevin Scott. “We started to get some positive confidence back, and Thai’s great game helped with that. The bats aren’t still where we want them, but they’re getting there. Hopefully this will get us back on the right track, and help us keep moving. It wasn’t the most ideal night for baseball, but the kids came to play and they got the W in the end.”

Norasethaporn held Hinsdale (1-3) to just two hits across his complete game in all five innings, striking out seven and walking one to record the victory on the bump. At the plate, Genesee Valley/Belfast recorded just four hits, with Garrett Miller having two of them, including a double, to pair with two runs scored. Owen Heaney and Evan Turybury each had an RBI single and run scored.

The Bobcats saw Peyton Keller and Xander Pascucci both record a hit to pace the offense. On the hill, Henry Schwartz struck out three and walked six in his start.

Both teams are back on the field Wednesday night, as Genesee Valley/Belfast hits the road to visit Andover/Whitesville in a 6 p.m. first pitch at Andover, while Hinsdale continues their road swing with a 5 p.m. visit to Cuba-Rushford.

SOFTBALL

Wellsville 9, Fredonia 3

ALLEGANY — To say that the week ahead for the Lady Lions of Wellsville would be filled with perhaps some of the most grueling challenges on the horizon, would be an understatement. They officially start with a Sectional champion and then they end it with a meeting against a defending New York State champion.

The difficult path ahead began at Joyce Field on the grounds of St. Bonaventure for their first task: A Section VI champion, hailing out of Class B2 themselves — the Fredonia Lady Hillbillies.

The two defending Sectional champions remained side-by-side with one another all throughout the cold, blustery early evening, defying the elements. Fredonia managed to find the board first against the Lady Lions, but for Section V’s defending champs in Class B2, the footstep they provided was even bigger.

Wellsville responded quickly on the first of two occasions against Fredonia, quadrupling the deficit to gain the upper hand going into the next half of the battle. While the Lady Hillbillies attempted to chip away, the Lady Lions once again took one massive step forward in the bottom of the sixth to seal the game away for good, as they returned home with a big victory under their belts — a 9-3 decision to collect their ninth win in the first 10 games.

“Fredonia is an excellent program, and they’re well-coached. It was nice to meet their challenge,” said Lady Lions coach Matt Burke. “I’m proud of this team. Makenzie was excellent in the circle and at the plate, and faced a really good pitcher in Jordan Lucas. Our hitters did a great job of having competitive at-bats up and down the order. We came up with the big hits with runners in scoring position. Brazen (Beckwith) caught a good game, Natalie Adams made some good plays defensively and collectively, we had big RBI hits out of Emma (Dunaway), Marissa (Ordway) and Averee (Palmatier). Our energy level was really good tonight, despite subpar weather conditions.”

With two scoreless innings between Fredonia and Wellsville (9-1) going by in the rearview mirror to kick off the festivities, the Lady Hillbillies were the first to strike with the help of Jordan Lucas at the plate, providing a big belt off Makenzie Cowburn to drive in the lone run in the third on a double. In response, the Lady Lions countered by quadrupling Fredonia with four runs of their own.

In the bottom half, Emma Dunaway and Marissa Ordway each posted big RBI singles poked past the infield and into the outfield, as Averee Palmatier and Makenzie Cowburn both scored the runs to help Wellsville pull ahead with an advantage they never lost for the remainder of the game.

After Fredonia trimmed the deficit down to two in the sixth, Wellsville had one more card left to play from the deck — a six-run bottom half to provide the game’s ultimate response, as Brazen Beckwith’s two-run triple to the deep outfield paved the way, along with a sacrifice fly by Makenna Dunbar and RBI double from Palmatier.

The Lady Hillbillies would provide one final chance to chip away at their deficit in the seventh, by way of a solo home run from Jaelyn Davis. But in the end, the deficit would become too much to overcome, as Wellsville accepted and survived the challenge brought forth by the Section VI champions.

Cowburn went all seven games for the Lady Lions in the cold, striking out 15 and walking three in her twirled four-hit performance. Cowburn would also go 3-for-4 with a triple and double, finishing a home run shy of the cycle. Palmatier and Beckwith each added a triple.

The Lady Lions are back home to Tullar Field on Wednesday, as they welcome in the Lady Mustangs of Dansville for a 5 p.m. visit.

Cuba-Rushford 9, Andover/Whitesville 2

CUBA — All the Lady Rebels of Cuba-Rushford needed was that one inning to create some magic.

Despite the less-than-ideal conditions harboring around the softball field on Monday at home, the first inning engineered just enough of a spark to ignite a flame that could not be put out, assembling an icebreaking inning that set them apart from Andover/Whitesville for good in what was a 9-2 win on Monday.

Right away in the game’s opening frame, Cuba-Rushford (3-2) acted quickly with their attack at the plate, as they posted five big runs to grab the early advantage over Andover/Whitesville to begin. In it, came perhaps the biggest momentum-shifting swing of the day — a three-run bomb rocketed by Laney Murphy to grab a 5-0 lead on Andover/Whitesville.

The five-run lead would hold up until the top of the sixth inning after Andover/Whitesville (0-2) found their way onto the board with RBIs from both Aislinn Hamilton and Olivia Waters, with Waters plating Hamilton on a double. The two hitters combined to record four of the team’s six total hits, but in the end, it would not be enough to overcome their first inning deficit in time.

When it was all said and done, Jordyn Radomski was stellar in the circle for Cuba-Rushford, striking out seven while holding Andover/Whitesville to six hits. At the plate, Radomski and Taylor Searle each posted two hits, combining to score three runs.

In the circle for Andover/Whitesville, Makaila Brewster struck out three and walked four in her complete game in the circle for Andover/Whitesville, who will now return home to welcome in Genesee Valley/Belfast for a 6 p.m. first pitch.

Cuba-Rushford will have their shot at Genesee Valley/Belfast at the very end of the week, traveling to Belfast for a 5 p.m. first pitch.

Letchworth 13, Fillmore 4

FILLMORE — The Lady Eagles of Fillmore were spoiled by the arrival of the Letchworth Lady Indians on a Monday night that was filled with combating the cold, windy and early Spring-esque weather. But despite it, the Lady Indians had the hot hand on offense, recording six of the team’s 13 total runs in the first two innings of play to set up shop, on their way towards a 13-4 score.

Letchworth raced out of the starting gates with a spark that was created after scoring the game’s first run during their opening at-bats, as the heat was turned up insurmountably beginning in the second with the first of two five-run frames, taking full advantage of the offense to extend their lead to six before another five-run frame in the fourth pushed the advantage out even further.

The Lady Indians lead would reach 13 straight scores across the plate before the Lady Eagles (2-3) prevented any chance of a shutout in the bottom of the sixth with three key runs, adding their last in the bottom of the seventh behind RBI singles from Mylee Miller, Emma Beardsley and Grace Russell.

Fillmore totaled four runs on six hits at the plate, with Oakley Frazier, Mattie McCumiskey and Skylar Gaddy all recording singles to round off the offense. In the circle, Miller fanned four and walked 12 in her complete game for the Lady Eagles.

Coming up next on Wednesday, Fillmore will get set for a 5 p.m. visit to Friendship to take on defending Class D2 champion Friendship/Scio.

GOLF

Wellsville 201, Genesee Valley/Belfast 211

WELLSVILLE — The golfers out on the links at the Wellsville Country Club had to brave the elements after the temperatures took a dip back down into early Spring territory to begin the week on Monday.

But despite the less-than-ideal conditions, it was no problem for Wellsville’s Ethan Bailey firing the medalist round between both teams, as he helped propel the Lions towards a narrow edge of visiting Genesee Valley/Belfast with a 201-211 victory to bounce back from Friday’s defeat in Addison.

Bailey fired the top round of the day for the Lions (2-1), his best so far this season, recording a match-low round of 39 to set up the victory. Following behind him was Fletcher Kaye, as he carded a round of 50. Jackson Shoughrue and Maddy Parks each had a 56 to add, while Serena Boussa rounded off the card with a 63.

Genesee Valley/Belfast (1-1) was led by a team-low round of 49 scored by Chris Weaver. Will Guilford was right behind on the scorecard, tallying a round of 53. Dakota Hemphill and Jacob Borden each followed with rounds of 54 and 55, while Justin Hill wrapped up the scoring with his round of 60.

Both teams will be back on the links Wednesday in a pair of 4 p.m. tee times, as Wellsville heads north to Allegheny Hills in Rushford to take on host Fillmore, while Genesee Valley/Belfast will return to the Wellsville Country Club, this time hosting Bolivar-Richburg.

TRACK

Oswald’s 1st place finishes lead Lions in meet at Rush-Henrietta

HENRIETTA — Through some of the most difficult conditions outdoors, the Wellsville Lions track team had to fight their way through it all while combating their toughest competition of the season up north at Rush-Henrietta to take on the host Royal Comets on Monday.

The Royal Comets were able to sweep the day’s meet with dominant performances on both sides, garnering 125-7 and 110-22 wins for the boys and girls squads, but the Lions were able to score some finishes in the Top 3 along the way to record some big points and some momentum for the trek back home.

Leading the way were the Lady Lions, who had nine finishes in the Top 3, two of them at the very top from Kaylee Oswald who swept both throwing events with winning distances in the shot put and discus. Alyssa Dorrough followed behind with a second place finish in both events right behind Oswald, while Grace Kinnicutt provided a third place finish in the shot put. Elsewhere on the field, Brooklyn Dahlgren placed second in the high jump.

On the track, Lauren Viglietta placed third in the 400 sprint. Ella Green crossed the finish line in third during the 1500 run, while Maddie Muurisepp finished third in the 100 hurdles.

For the boys, Ayden Faulkner and Grady Ball both recorded the highest finishes from the field, paving the way towards second place finishes in the triple jump and shot put respectively. From the track, Noah Joslyn concluded the day in third place in the 1600 run.

Wellsville is back home on Wednesday for tri-meet action, hosting both Bolivar-Richburg and Cuba-Rushford in a 5 p.m. start time.
