Wednesday Roundup: Harris, Ayers launch 1st inning homers to fuel strong Lady Wolverines win over Hornell; Ordway, Dunbar combine to toss another shutout win for Lady Lions vs. Dansville

RICHBURG — Delivering a game-opening statement can send shockwaves in each and every direction on the field. But during the very first at-bat of the game? McKinlee Harris took it to a completely different level for the Lady Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg.

On the second pitch in the game thrown by Jordyn Dyring in the circle for visiting Hornell, the Bolivar-Richburg senior saw it and took it for a ride into deep center field for a lead-off solo shot — one of two first inning home runs that the Lady Wolverines would launch against the Lady Red Raiders, setting up shop for even bigger happenings later on in the battle, as they galloped their way towards an 11-2 home win on Wednesday to begin the first of three games in a three-day stretch.

Harris’ homer came in the midst of a three-run bottom half of the first inning for the Lady Wolverines (3-0), as she rocketed a deep ball into center field to break the ice immediately. After special teams saw them add another run onto the board a short time later, Malayna Ayers helped the team’s cause with another bomb herself, sending one into orbit in the same direction where Harris landed hers — a solo shot of her own, to boost the lead to a trio.

Despite falling behind early, the Lady Red Raiders attempted to fight back with their first scoring threat against Bolivar-Richburg in the second. From within it, Hornell would place runners on first and third, but ultimately could not find the hit to break the ice themselves, as Rylee Whiting delivered a strong end to the team’s stand on defense with a humongous strikeout.

The momentum carried over into the bottom half once again for the Lady Wolverines, this time at a much higher level than before, as they connected with nearly everything they saw at the plate to deliver a seven-run frame to eclipse 10 in the game. A 10-0 lead over the Lady Red Raiders that was never relinquished.

Hornell would manage to grab a pair of runs in the top of third to try and trim down their deficit, with a double from Parker Graham leading the way. Bolivar-Richburg would respond with their final run of the game in the next half of the inning, ensuring their lead permanently.

The Lady Wolverines totaled 11 runs off 11 hits, with four different hitters all tallying two hits each, including Harris, Ayers, Haley Mascho and Madison Carney. Whiting and Allie Zilker each drove in a pair of RBI. On the mound, Whiting went the distance to twirl a five-hit victory, fanning 10 and walking seven.

For the visitors in red, Madison Rudenauer led the bats with two of the team’s five total. In the circle, Lillian Hoyt struck out a pair of Lady Wolverines in her relief appearance.

Bolivar-Richburg will have a quick turnaround back on their home field in Richburg tonight, hosting Friendship/Scio in a colossal 5 p.m. first pitch between two back-to-back Sectional champions.

Wellsville 16, Dansville 0 (F-5)

WELLSVILLE — Just a couple of days separating the Lady Lions of Wellsville from perhaps their biggest challenge of the season this weekend, the task at hand on Wednesday back home at Tullar Field was one they were able to take care of right from the start, as their bats remained red hot at the plate while the tandem of Marissa Ordway and Makenna Dunbar combined to provide another shutout victory by a 16-0 count over Dansville to eclipse the 10-win mark this season.

The Lady Lions put together 16 runs off 15 total hits on the attack, starting the night with a two-run lead before the offense was re-ignited in the very next inning after another solid performance from the field, as they branched their lead out with a six-run second inning that gave them more cushioning to remain out in front over the Lady Mustangs, ultimately for good.

Leading the bats was Makenna Dunbar, who had two hits including a massive grand slam — her fifth homer of the season, totaling five RBI for the game. Marissa Ordway followed with a pair of doubles, driving in a pair while Makenzie Cowburn cleared the bases with one big swing, sending a double to the outfield to total four RBI in the contest. Emma Dunaway, Brazen Beckwith and Kaylie Fuller all had two more hits each to contribute to the cause.

In the circle, Ordway and Dunbar came together to toss a three-hit shutout of Dansville, with Ordway collecting the win behind five strikeouts.

“Marissa was sharp tonight, and the movement on her pitches was excellent. Our offense is firing on all cylinders. Everyone in the lineup tonight hit the ball hard.” said Lady Lions coach Matt Burke.

Wellsville will now get set to square off with defending Class A State Champion Webster Schroeder right back at Tullar Field, beginning at 1 p.m. before facing Addison later on in the day at 5 p.m. on Saturday.

ANDOVER — Whether it’s a single one, or even a plethora of them, finding hits in a timely fashion can provide a big time difference maker. With Genesee Valley/Belfast and Andover/Whitesville neck-and-neck with one another for the majority of their Wednesday battle in Andover, something most certainly had to give way. And quick.

Down by one to Andover/Whitesville, visiting Genesee Valley/Belfast was running out of time to try and make one final attempt at fighting back. But it was an opportunity they would not allow to let slip away from them.

In the top of the sixth, the offense came together to provide that final push against the hosts, as they managed to scratch across four gigantic runs to take the lead away from Andover/Whitesville. They would go on to account for the game’s last five runs with one more in the seventh, as Genesee Valley/Belfast picked up their third win in the first four games with an 8-4 decision.

Going into Andover/Whitesville’s second term of offense, the game found its way towards breaking one of many deadlocks, when Makaila Brewster delivered a strong hit into the outfield — an RBI single to pull the hosts back ahead of Genesee Valley/Belfast (3-1). After both teams traded a scoreless third inning, the visitors climbed their way back to the top again with a run in the third inning.

As the pendulum began to shift between both teams, it would take another dip into Andover/Whitesville’s (0-3) direction with a monster lead-off bomb from Aislinn Hamilton, giving them the 4-3 lead back to control down the stretch.

What momentum was built off of the home run, was immediately stopped by Genesee Valley/Belfast, as Hannah Southwick-Powers and Sondra Guilford each came together to provide two big RBI singles in the top of the team’s four-run sixth inning to pull their way ahead of Andover/Whitesville, and out of reach for the remainder of the game, adding one final piece of insurance in the seventh to lock down the victory.

Southwick-Powers and Guilford, along with Jenna Hall, all led the offense for Genesee Valley/Belfast with two hits each. In the circle, Southwick-Powers and Ashley Burrows provided two outstanding performances, with Burrows fanning eight and walking four in her five-inning start. Southwick-Powers then took over and laid claim to the team's victory with strikeouts in five of the last seven Andover/Whitesville at-bats.

For the hosts, Hamilton, Brewster and Olivia Waters all had two hits to record. In the circle, Brewster struck out six and walked one in her complete game effort. Andover/Whitesville is back on their home field Saturday afternoon with a 12 p.m. first pitch against Avoca/Prattsburgh, in Andover.

Genesee Valley/Belfast will now take aim at potentially a fourth straight win to close out the week on Friday, as they head back home to host Cuba-Rushford in a 5 p.m. contest at the Rich Sullivan Complex in Belfast.

Friendship/Scio 14, Fillmore 0

SCIO — There were no signs of slowing Friendship/Scio down on Wednesday. The defending back-to-back Class D2 champions came out lock, stock and barrel, and ready to roll against visiting Fillmore, as they used a dominant first at-bat sequence to set the tone immediately in what was their sixth win in first eight games on their home field in Scio, taking the 14-0 shutout over the Lady Eagles.

The Friendship/Scio (6-2) offense was unstoppable from start to finish, as the cohesive unit combined to record 14 total runs off 14 total hits, which would allow them to set the tone almost immediately out of the gate in the opening frame, scoring 10 runs to fuel their way past Fillmore and towards the victory.

Three different hitters recorded at least a pair of hits on offense, including Nevaeh Ross, who was a force on both sides of the field once more with a perfect 4-for-4 outing and four runs scored. The Friendship/Scio phenom also held Fillmore (2-4) to just three hits across a 14-strikeout, one-walk performance in the circle from start to finish.

Adding more help on offense was Morghyn Ross, as she went 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI. Claire Calhoun pitched in with two hits including a double, and four RBI, while Katherine Lamberson drove in three more runs.

For Fillmore, Mylee Miller, Oakley Frazier and Mattie McCumiskey all garnered a hit on offense. In the circle, Miller went the distance with one strikeout and six walks.

ANDOVER — After taking a shutout victory over Hinsdale back on Monday, Genesee Valley/Belfast aimed to keep building positives on top of their first victory of the season.

On Wednesday, another big exclamation point was stamped down, this time on the road in Andover, when a first inning launch helped jumpstart an upswing that never decreased altitude, as the visitors in gray and black started strong and provided an even larger finish to the night against Andover/Whitesville to record the 18-0 shutout in six innings.

The first inning saw Genesee Valley/Belfast (2-4) strike with a 4-0 lead out of the gate, propelled by the big bat of Thai Norarsethaporn, who went yard on a three-run blast to break the ice. To maintain the momentum in their favor, a big fanning of the side was issued by Garrett Miller on the mound in the second inning after they added two more runs to their lead in the top half.

With the offense continuing to add more fuel into the fire, the big finish for Genesee Valley/Belfast came in the top of the sixth inning, as they capitalized on the game’s biggest bundle of runs, scoring the last 10 to force an early conclusion to the battle, holding Andover/Whitesville (1-3) scoreless one final time along the way to do so.

In a battle of Millers on the mound between both squads, Garrett Miller picked up the victory for the visitors in gray and black while leading the way on offense in the same swing, as he struck out three and walked two in his two-inning start while posting three of the team’s seven hits in the process. Adding in more help was Matt Cater, who had a triple.

Andover/Whitesville was led by Jacob Wagner and Layton Miller, who recorded a hit each. On the mound, Miller fanned three and walked three in his start. The hosts in blue and purple will hit the road for a 5 p.m. visit to Fillmore on Monday.

Genesee Valley/Belfast will go for their third straight win on Friday, as they head back home to welcome in Cuba-Rushford for a 5 p.m. first pitch at the Rich Sullivan Complex in Belfast.

Cuba-Rushford 16, Hinsdale 6 (F-5)

CUBA — Although Hinsdale was able to get their hands on the game’s first lead, the response that the Rebels of Cuba-Rushford provided shortly after was just as powerful.

After taking the lead way from the Bobcats, the hosts in blue continued to build, posting a massive second inning to cushion their advantage further away and ultimately out of reach, as they closed out their three-game homestand with all three contests coming in the win column, flooring it towards a 16-6 decision after five complete innings on Wednesday.

“We struggled a bit with command early on, but we were able to bounce back and score some runs,” said Rebels coach Pat Wight. “We took advantage of miscues with timely hitting and good baserunning. Credit to Hinsdale, the top of their lineup hit the ball hard and put some pressure on us. I was really happy to end our homestand with three wins.”

The Bobcats were first to crack open the game in their first tenure at the plate, as Xander Pascucci and Peyton Keller each exchanged RBI singles to record a 2-0 lead. But a response in the bottom half would not go unanswered in the bottom half for Cuba-Rushford (4-2), as the Rebels scored three straight to overtake the lead.

The momentum would carry over into the second after a strong finish quarterbacked by Allen Fuller on the hill, scoring back-to-back strikeouts in the midst of a 1-2-3 on defense. In turn, the hosts would go on to scratch across six additional runs to create a lead they would never lose again, despite added pressure from the Bobcats (1-3) offense down the stretch.

Cuba-Rushford accumulated 16 runs off nine hits at the plate, with Jack Frank paving the way towards a perfect 3-for-3 outing at the dish, driving in four total RBI. Eli Sleggs added in two hits himself, driving in four more RBI and scoring twice, while Jacob Smith scored four times. On the mound, Fuller was credited with his first career Varsity win behind four strikeouts and four walks in his three-inning outing.

For the Bobcats, Jake Elliott recorded three of the team’s seven hits at the plate, including a double. On the mound, Pascucci fanned two and walked four in his relief appearance. Hinsdale will look to turn it around on the road in Ellicottville, Saturday morning in a 10 a.m. first pitch.

On Friday, Cuba-Rushford hits the road for a visit to Belfast, as they face host Genesee Valley/Belfast in a 5 p.m. contest.

Four different pitchers combined to hold Friendship/Scio to just one hit on the mound, with Luke Colombo being credited the victory in his start for the Eagles (4-0), striking out three and walking one across his two innings. WELLSVILLE — The Lions of Wellsville gave it everything they had against a strong Section V power in Avoca/Prattsburgh on their home court, Wednesday night. The visiting Titans would come away victorious, but it was not easy by any means, as they took the edge in three of the five matches to capture the 3-2 win.

Elias Putnam and Bryce Schuck led the singles competition with two of the three wins for Avoca/Prattsburgh, as Putnam scored a strong 6-2, 6-4 edge over Wellsville’s (1-4) Hua Qui Zhang at first singles. Fillmore 5, Warsaw 0

WARSAW — They were challenged right out of the gate on Wednesday not too far from home up north, but it was a challenge that the Eagles of Fillmore answered on Wednesday, as they fought tooth and nail with host Warsaw until the very end, recording all five victories that included tough fights from Eben Schilke and Isaiah Sisson to headline a 5-0 sweep of the Tigers.

“This was a good team win today. I’m really happy with how the doubles teams are gelling,” said Eagles coach Randy Crouch. “Eben played a great first match at first singles against a quality player, but the story of the day was Isaiah. He’s been struggling a little finding his rhythm, and he played an ugly first set, but he found his footing and took over the last two sets in his match to get a good win.”

The day was fueled by two gritty victories in the singles department from both Schilke and Sisson to pave Fillmore’s (2-0) lane towards triumph, as Schilke battled with Warsaw’s Pietr Nolte through the distance to come away victorious with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 finish. Sisson followed up with a second singles rebound, as he bounced back after a first set defeat to capture the last two sets of his match in resilient fashion, taking down Greg Treutlein for the 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 win.

Marcus Wolfer rounded off the sweep of the singles matches with a solid 6-1, 6-0 win over Trinity Weigley.

Fillmore closed out the match with the last two wins from both doubles teams, as the first doubles squad of Joe Derck and Jack Boon, along with the second doubles duo of Henry Decker and Ezra Knapp each collected wins by a 6-1, 6-0 count to close out the evening.

GOLF

Fillmore 213, Wellsville 221

RUSHFORD — It was a duel down to the finish at the end of the night between both Wellsville and Fillmore on Wednesday, as all eight golfers that made their way onto the scorecard between both teams delivered a strong performance on the links at Allegheny Hills in Rushford.

Despite Wellsville’s Ethan Bailey once again firing the match’s medalist round, it was the host Eagles that swiped the victory away from the Lions behind their balanced scoring efforts from top to bottom, as they collected the narrow win by a 213-221 count.

“I was very happy with the scores my guys took. It was a very close, competitive match with Wellsville,” said Eagles coach Tom Parks. “It’s always a strange feeling coaching against my kids. I was happy to see Maddy (Parks) playing well tonight, and getting a nice score despite being on the opposing team. It’s not the first time this has happened either, including volleyball, basketball and golf with my son Mason in the past. We’re all so competitive.”

Leading the Fillmore (2-0) scorecard at the top of the list was Anderson Wiltsey, as he fired a team-low round of 51 to pave the way towards victory. Following right behind him were Reid Cockle and Layton Sanasith, as each recorded a round of 52, while Jack Cool rounded off with his fired round of 58.

Bailey led the Lions (2-2) at the top of their scorecard at the end of the night, as he shot the match’s medaling round of 45. Maddy Parks was next up, as she chipped in a round of 54. Fletcher Kaye had a 58, while Noah Brogan carded a 64 to round off. Wellsville is back on the links Friday night with a trip to Twin Hickory Golf Club in Hornell, as they partake in tri-match action with Dansville and the host Red Raiders beginning at 4 p.m.

Fillmore will go for their third straight win to open their campaign on Tuesday at the Bolivar Golf Club, as they visit the host Wolverines in a 4 p.m. tee time of their own.

Genesee Valley/Belfast 202, Bolivar-Richburg 233

WELLSVILLE — Dakota Hemphill and Will Guilford were at the top of the leaderboard at the Wellsville Country Club on Wednesday, as the Genesee Valley/Belfast golfers each posted the medalist round to pace the team’s victory, edging their way past visiting Bolivar-Richburg with a 202-233 triumph.

Hemphill and Guilford occupied the top two spots on Genesee Valley/Belfast’s (2-1) scorecard from start to finish, as each golfer fired a match-low round of 49 to pace the victory. Chris Weaver pitched in with a round of 51, while Colden Caiazza had a 53.

Bolivar-Richburg (0-2) was led by a team-low round of 55 fired by Parker Worth. Behind him was Trent Sibble, who provided a 56. Andrew Cox tallied a 60, while Ben Loganburg rounded off the scoring with his round of 62.

Both teams will meet once again on Monday, this time at the Bolivar Golf Club in a 4 p.m. tee-time.

TRACK

Lions sweep home tri-meet with B-R, C-R

WELLSVILLE — After experiencing one of the Section’s most elite track squads in a road trip to Rush-Henrietta earlier this week, the Lions of Wellsville were on the button in their return home on Wednesday, as they used the Monday night visit as fuel to stride their way towards a tri-match sweep of both Bolivar-Richburg (126-7, 99-33) and Cuba-Rushford (96-36, 102-29).

For the boys team, the Lions were able to fuel up their engines with 15 total first place finishes to set up shop for their victorious night of competition, with Xavier Scott and Ayden Faulkner each winning three times on both ends of the spectrum. Scott led the way with two wins of the track and one in the field with first place finishes in the 100 dash, 110 hurdles and high jump, while Faulkner added in two wins from the sand bunker by recording winning distances in the long and triple jumps, along with a top finish in the 400 sprint on the track.

Noah Joslyn and Grady Ball each tallied two wins to help further the Lions and their cause, with Joslyn recording top finishes in the 800 spring and 1600 run, while Ball brought out the brooms with a sweep in both throwing events from the field, tallying winning distances in the shot put and discus. Wellsville would also collect two wins out of three in the relay department along the way, placing first in the 1600 and 3200 relays.

Other individual winners for the Lions include Kamron Dodge in the 3200 run, JT Mariotti in the 400 hurdles and Brayden Riley in the pole vault.

Cuba-Rushford would place second overall, as they laid claim to an 82-17 win over the Wolverines behind two first place finishes on the track. Anderson Siegel was the lone winner individually for the Rebels, scoring a first place finish in the 200 dash. Siegel also ran the opening leg in the team’s lone relay victory, racing towards a winning time in the 400 relay.

On the girls side, the Lady Lions fueled their match sweep of both Bolivar-Richburg and Cuba-Rushford with eight first place finishes, including a complete sweep of all three relay events — the 400, 1600 and 3200. The individual triumphs were paced by another sweep, this time by Kaylee Oswald from the field, as she recorded winning distances in both the shot put and discus to claim gold.

Brooklyn Dahlgren and Addy Clark each added in a win of their own from the field, taking the victories in the high jump and pole vault respectively. Rounding off was Allie Bidzerkowny with the team’s lone individual win from the track, as she raced towards victory in the 800 sprint.

Placing second behind the Lady Lions were the Lady Wolverines, as they gathered five first place finishes to help the cause in a 60-46 decision over Cuba-Rushford. Leading the charge was Nadia Baldwin and Kori Thomas, who each had a pair of individual wins to pave the way. Baldwin collected one in both the field, and on the track, with wins in the 200 dash and long jump. Thomas swept both hurdling events — the 100 and 400 hurdles, to claim the top prize.

Carmen Crowley had the team’s final individual win from the field, adding in a win in the triple jump. Bolivar-Richburg will end the weekend with a visit to Salamanca on Friday beginning at 4:30 p.m. before heading out for Invitational action in Olean, Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Rebels placed third behind four first place finishes, all on the track, with Libby Drum pacing the wins with a complete sweep in the distance events — the 1500 and 3000 runs. Brynn Lavery added in a 100 dash victory, while Sofia Riquelme was victorious in the 400 sprint.

Wellsville will join Cuba-Rushford along with Bolivar-Richburg on a trip to Olean for Invitational action, Saturday.

GV/Belfast claims gold, sweeps field in tri-match with Fri/Scio, Fillmore

HOUGHTON — An evening on the track would ultimately belong to Genesee Valley/Belfast across all phases on Wednesday by taking care of business in both the boys and girls division of competition at Houghton University, as they took both team wins over Friendship/Scio (75-36, 58-38) and host Fillmore (63-53, 60-45) they needed to lay claim on the overall meet victory.

For their boys team, Genesee Valley/Belfast’s victory was fueled by a plethora of secondary finishes to pair with five first place wins they added along to it. Among them was Zach Bourne, as he provided the complete sweep in both hurdling events — the 110 and 400 hurdles, to claim the wins. Hayden Burnell tallied the team’s final individual win from the field, scoring a winning distance from the sand bunker with a top finish in the triple jump.

Genesee Valley/Belfast also scored both relay victories in action, garnering winning times in the 400 and 1600 relays.

The Fillmore boys would tally the second place finish with a split of the competition, as they worked their way past Friendship/Scio (58-41) with the win behind six first place wins — two from Brian Ashton, who went on to sweep both throwing events for the Eagles, winning in the shot put and discus. Henry Sardina (400 sprint), Noah Strickland (800 sprint), Ernie Lipscomb (1600 run) and Eli Strickland (3200 run) all chipped in with individual wins of their own.

Friendship/Scio placed third behind a brilliant four-win day from Jordan White, scoring his triumphs in the 100 and 200 dashes, along with wins from the field in the high jump and long jump.

On the girls side, the Genesee Valley/Belfast ladies compiled seven first place wins, two each from Sophia Gambino and Sophie Zillgitt to lead the way. Gambino provided her wins from the track, garnering winning times in the 200 dash and 400 sprint, while Zillgitt scored a win in each field of competition, becoming victorious in the 800 sprint and high jump.

The two competitors would also race legs in the team’s lone relay win, recording the winning time in the 1600 relay. Other individual winners for Genesee Valley/Belfast include Allyson Hazelton in the 400 hurdles and Angel Jimerson in the discus.

The Fillmore ladies followed up the boys squad with a second place finish of their own, scoring a close win over Friendship/Scio (58-41) behind four first place finishes. Among them, two were scored by Ava Sylvester, who placed first in the 1500 run and from the field, in the long jump. Rachel Hatch has the team’s last individual win in the 100 hurdles. The Lady Eagles also collected a 400 relay win along the way.

Friendship/Scio placed third overall with three total top finishes, with Lexi Crossley’s pair of wins in the 100 dash and triple jump leading the efforts. Karlee Cochran had the team’s last in the shot put.

Friendship/Scio and Genesee Valley/Belfast will meet again on Tuesday in Belmont for a 5 p.m. first go. As for Fillmore, they will join Wellsville on a trip to Cuba-Rushford on Tuesday beginning at 5 p.m.

Boys Team Scores: Genesee Valley/Belfast 63, Fillmore 53; Genesee Valley/Belfast 75, Friendship/Scio 36; Fillmore 58, Friendship/Scio 41.
