Lady Lions split matches with Fillmore but grab big first doubles win to edge out Lady Eagles with 3-2 win

WELLSVILLE — Two of the area’s top girls tennis teams squared off for the second and final time this season, but this time in Wellsville, as the Lady Lions did battle with a surging Fillmore Lady Eagles squad.

With all four courts occupied, the match would come down to the final battle of the night at first doubles after each team recorded a pair of victories each going in. At the end, it was the team of Maddy Parks and Meagan Riley that came out on top victorious for Wellsville, as they edged past Fillmore with a 3-2 team victory on Wednesday.

Parks and Riley led the way for the Lady Lions (5-2) with a big 10-2 victory over Fillmore’s Yenely Cristino and Kristina Wilcox at first doubles to give them the victory overall. Beforehand, each team picked up a pair of wins, with Wellsville taking the overall advantage in the singles department.

Carina Kling nearly provided a sweep across the pro sets for the hosts at second singles, as she came away with a 10-2 victory over Fillmore’s Hannah Wilcox. To their left side, Alexa Hill followed with a third singles win for the Lady Lions, scoring a 10-3 triumph over Phynix Halbach.

The Lady Eagles (7-2) got their two victories in each department, with Clancy Cockle getting their lone victory at first singles via a 10-4 decision over Wellsville’s Cassie Kling. On the other side of the tennis courts, Fillmore’s second doubles team of Kali White and Amy Majoros recorded the 10-3 victory over Wellsville’s team of Lily Ball and Kelsey Seely.


Wellsville will head for the Mendon Pool & Racquet Club for Team Sectionals, Saturday morning. Their next regular season match will be Tuesday at 5 p.m. back home against Avoca/Prattsburgh. As for Fillmore, they will have their shot at the Lady Vikings first, hosting them Friday at 4:30 p.m.
