Tuesday Roundup: Potter blasts go-ahead nuke, slams door shut in 7th for Eagles to complete comeback at C-R; B-R’s Barkley outshines GV/Belfast’s Davenport in big 5-2 Wolverines home win

CUBA — There is no better feeling of relief in the game of baseball than completing one epic rally from behind. It can take a vast amount of resilience to accomplish such a feat. But in addition, there also is an overwhelming sense of urgency — one of the more uncomfortable feelings, that comes right along with it.

Especially with time becoming a factor.

Trailing for much of the game on Tuesday in Cuba, it was a similar predicament that the Eagles of Fillmore had faced head on after the host Rebels of Cuba-Rushford received a treasure trove of connections right off the bat in the first two innings of play, holding an advantage that reached as high as four runs. The path behind the eight-ball can be an incredibly tricky one, but once you chart the course around it, it is game over.

The Eagles slowly but surely climbed their way back, beginning within a top of the fourth inning that saw the momentum cease for a moment by the pitching prowess of Finn Ricketts for the Rebels. Despite it, they were still in control of their own destiny. With the comeback nearing completion following a game-tying fifth-inning sledgehammer, Damon Potter made sure the job was complete with the biggest checkmarks of them all.

Sending the ball straight out of the park.

The Fillmore senior hand-delivered the best of both worlds for the visitors in green and black. With their rally creating a level playing surface and a brand new game for the homestretch against Cuba-Rushford, Potter helped the Eagles maintain all the momentum possible, sending a pitch straight into orbit and out of reach for a gigantic go-ahead solo nuke in the top of the sixth inning to give the team their first lead since their opening at-bats.

In addition to his offensive efforts, Potter was then given the ball in the seventh inning to slam the door shut on the Rebels, firing back-to-back strikeouts to close out a remarkable comeback victory for Fillmore in what was a 7-6 road win — their fourth in their first five games of this Spring.

“The credit goes to all these kids for staying in a game that could have easily been over in five. We just battled all over the field tonight,” said Eagles coach Kaiden Bowers. “We showed a lot of resilience tonight. We were short on players and had only eight Varsity guys available. We called up Liam McCumiskey down in JV to start at second base tonight and he stepped up huge for us with a hit late. Jared (Boon) came in and helped shut the door right alongside Damon, who hit that bomb in the sixth to put us up. This was a complete team effort from top to bottom with all nine guys really contributing towards it. I am beyond proud of them.”

Both offenses were ripping and roaring right from the first pitch. Out of the 13 combined runs that both teams supplied at the plate, eight of them were accounted for in the first two innings of play, beginning with a 1-0 Fillmore (4-1) lead out of the gate, courtesy of a Jack Boon RBI single into right field. The Rebels tripled the response not once, but twice against their opposition, commencing with a three-run opening term — two of those runs off an RBI single by Eli Sleggs, to rip possession of the lead away from Fillmore’s grasp.

After Fillmore trimmed the deficit in the second, Cuba-Rushford (1-2) bolstered the advantage once more with another three-run stanza generated by back-to-back RBI doubles from Hayden Schappacher and Finn Ricketts. The score would freeze in place up until the Eagles began making their meteoric rise down the stretch, beginning with an infield single off the bat of Jared Boon that scored one run in the fourth.

Then, a game-tying, three-run sequence made its presence known one inning later, as the fifth inning was electrified by two straight RBI doubles from Kalen Beardsley, followed by Jared Boon back at the top of the Fillmore lineup to create a level playing surface, moving their comeback much closer towards completion. In the sixth, Damon Potter was able to send it straight to the moon, literally and metaphorically, as he blasted a lead-off solo shot to deep center field to give the Eagles a 7-6 lead they never lost again.

After giving them a big time hit, Potter was awarded the ball in the seventh where he proceeded to score the save, as he posted two enormous strikeouts to shut the Rebels down in the midst of a 1-2-3 at the plate to finish off a remarkable rally from behind for Fillmore.

“Credit to Fillmore, they never quit,” said Rebels coach Pat Wight. “Boon came in and did a good job throwing strikes, and their defense made some solid plays. Potter had the big blow with his home run to give them the lead, and then he closed the door on us in the seventh on the mound. I thought Finn pitched a heck of a game for us. He was the victim of some pretty poor defense on our part tonight. We had a few innings where we should have been out of them in nine, 10 pitches, and we didn’t make routine plays behind him. He ended up throwing 20 or more pitches in the inning as a result of it.”

The Eagles mustered 12 hits to go with their seven runs to activate their offense, with every single hitter in the lineup all recording at least one. Jared Boon, Isaac Wilcox and Kalen Beardsley each recorded two hits to lead the charge. On the mound, Boon scooped up the victory in relief, pitching a sublime four innings with eight strikeouts and one walk.

For the Rebels, Finn Ricketts went into the fifth inning, supplying the defense with seven strikeouts and two walks of his own. At the plate, Hayden Schappacher had two of the team’s five hits. Ricketts had a double, while Sleggs and Adam Shaffer had a single each.

Both teams are back on the diamond Thursday night, with the Eagles hopping back on the bus and heading back down the road to visit Genesee Valley/Belfast at the Rich Sullivan Complex in Belfast for a 7 p.m. first pitch, while the Rebels stay put at home to welcome in Bolivar-Richburg at 5 p.m.

Bolivar-Richburg 5, Genesee Valley/Belfast 2

BOLIVAR — With Ethan Davenport and Landon Barkley simultaneously delivering the goods for their respective clubs on the mound, timely hitting was going to come at an absolute premium between both Genesee Valley/Belfast and Bolivar-Richburg, Tuesday night.

In their first of two titanic clashes this Spring, the action saw the temperature rise down the stretch, with Genesee Valley/Belfast going on to double the advantage in the fourth inning after previously trailing to the host Wolverines in the first three innings of play. In turn, the hosts lit the match for a stellar finish to their game, as they went on to score four unanswered runs — two of those from Charlie Millitello and his big bat in the sixth to help put the game away for good, as Bolivar-Richburg edged out Genesee Valley/Belfast with a 5-2 win.

“It was a pitcher’s duel between Landon and Ethan all game long,” said Wolverines coach Dustin Allen. “We were lucky to get some timely hits when we needed them to move guys around. We had some great defensive plays behind Landon to help that cause and escape some jams. Charlie really stepped up at the plate and in the field tonight, Tavyn (MacDonell) went behind the plate for the first time and did a great job helping call a great game for Landon. There was a lot of energy from this group, and to have that in a game like this, that was great to help us get a big win against a tough GV/Belfast team.”

After holding down the fort in the opening frame, Landon Barkley took matters into his own hands at the plate with a lead-off double for the Wolverines (4-1) to place himself into scoring position early. He eventually navigated his way to the plate to become the game’s first run off a clutch sacrifice to the outfield by Tavyn MacDonell, giving Bolivar-Richburg the advantage for the foreseeable future.

Barkley and Davenport would continue to deal back-and-forth jabs at one another across the next two scoreless innings before Genesee Valley/Belfast (5-1) formulated a rapid response in the top of the fourth, as they doubled their lead on a two-run single into left field off the bat of Damon Davis. But that would be all the Wolverines defense allowed, as the hosts took control of the offense from the fourth inning onwards, tying the game right back up again at two on special teams.

The Wolverines pulled ahead later on in the fifth with another big run before Charlie MIlitello’s stick came into play for what would be the team’s final tenure at the dish, as he blasted a two-run double straight into the outfield before using his legs to gallop all the way around the bases off a crucial Genesee Valley/Belfast error, branching the advantage out to a trio of runs in the process.

Bolivar-Richburg went on to record the three outs in the seventh to freeze Genesee Valley/Belfast for a third straight time at the plate, finishing off their marvelous run down the homestretch.

Both squads accumulated five hits at the plate, with the Wolverines witnessing Barkley, MacDonell and Connor Margeson all add one in alongside Militello’s multi-hit outing. On the mound, Barkley outlasted Ethan Davenport on the opposite side of the field, as he went the distance for the six-strikeout, three-walk win.

As for Davenport, the Genesee Valley/Belfast junior was outstanding, also going the distance behind eight strikeouts and one walk. At the plate, Ian McKenzie, Ryan Daciw, Ben Cater and Trent Hutchison all had a hit to chip in along with Davis’ big fourth inning strike.

On Thursday, both teams are back to it, with the Wolverines hitting the road for a 5 p.m. visit to Cuba-Rushford, and Genesee Valley/Belfast heading back home to the Rich Sullivan Complex in Belfast for a 7 p.m. first pitch under the lights against the Eagles of Fillmore.

FRIENDSHIP — 39 combined runs between Hinsdale and Friendship/Scio worked their way across the plate during Tuesday’s clash at historic Wellman Field in Friendship. In the midst of it, the visiting Bobcats faced a deficit that loomed large entering the final stretch of battle. Through it all, they made it worthwhile with many special teams exclamation points in the top of the sixth inning, as they flipped the game on its head completely to take the lead for good in what was a 21-18 road win.

With the runs coming left and right through a two-inning elongation that saw Friendship/Scio take a 4-3 lead right away, Hinsdale (1-4) began the process of shifting all the momentum in their favor with two more big runs to regain the lead in the top of the fourth inning. Despite losing control of their newly-gained advantage with a go-ahead response from their opposition, the Bobcats buckled down and struck all chords possible with a herculean 15-run sixth inning to fully ensure that the lead remained in their favor.

After the Bobcats reversed the momentum, Friendship/Scio did not back down without one final response of their own, as they closed out the night of battle with the game’s last 10 runs in consecutive fashion, trimming the gap down to a trio of runs. But the sixth inning for the visitors in blue and white ultimately remained fully intact, as they went on to score their first win of the campaign.

Each team posted seven hits at the plate in the midst of the chaos, with Caleb Elliott and Cody Hand each recording two to pace the Hinsdale bats. On the mound, the win was granted to Tim Ribble in relief, as he fanned two and walked four.

For Friendship/Scio (0-4), Mike Wade and Aiden Golden each collected a pair of hits and combined to score eight runs. On the hill, Matt Donohue struck out seven and walked four during his start that eclipsed into the sixth inning. The team will return to action on Thursday with a 6 p.m. visit to Andover to take on host Andover/Whitesville.

Hinsdale is back to work Saturday afternoon back home, as they host the Mount Morris Blue Devils in a 12 p.m. first pitch.

SOFTBALL

Fillmore 11, Cuba-Rushford 9

CUBA — The Lady Eagles of Fillmore were on an absolute roll through all phases of the game Tuesday night in Cuba, serving as the early bird that caught the worm right out of the gate with seven consecutive runs to set the bar against the host Lady Rebels.

With the lead now in Fillmore’s hands, it was a deep hole for Cuba-Rushford to dig out of. Despite the early adversity, the Lady Rebels showed a tremendous amount of resilience down the stretch to put the pressure on the Lady Eagles late, trimming the deficit down to as little as a pair entering the night’s final frame. But the visitors in black and green were able to keep their opposition in the rearview mirror, as they held on tight to secure their fourth win in their first five games with a razor-thin 11-9 edge on the road.

The Lady Eagles (4-1) were on the button right from the genesis of battle, posting an early 2-0 lead on a full circle sequence for Morghyn Ross, who started the frame with an RBI double into center to score Tenlee Miller before reaching home plate herself on a wild pitch away from danger. Fillmore added to their lead later on, once again by way of the top of the lineup, as they provided back-to-back RBIs to extend their lead out to four.

With the offense going on to score a 5-0 lead on the Lady Rebels (1-4), the back and forth exchange of runs would then ensue down the stretch, leading up to Cuba-Rushford’s monstrous five-run bottom of the sixth inning to apply one more enormous burst of pressure against the visitors. Fueling the efforts was Emma Bunk, who came in through the clutch to post a two-out, two-run single into center field to trim their deficit to a pair of runs.

Both teams proceeded to trade one run each through the seventh inning of action, which allowed Fillmore to maintain their position in the driver’s seat for good, as they edged out a late Cuba-Rushford rally to keep their early season fire lit.

The Lady Eagles compiled 11 runs off eight total hits, with Ross and Mylee Miller each leading the way with two. Ross went on to score three runs along the way, while Tenlee Miller, Mattie McCumiskey, Summer Friedl and Kelsie Songster all had a hit to chip in. In the circle, Mylee Miller scored the win with six strikeouts and five walks in her complete game twirl.

For the Lady Rebels, Bunk led the bats with a 2-for-4 outing consisting of three total RBI. Aubrey Williams had a double, RBI and run to add into the fray, while Jordyn Radomski, Lizzy Kocsis, Kate Radomski and Mireya Rutkowski all had a hit. Cuba-Rushford will play host to Bolivar-Richburg on Thursday at 5 p.m.

The Lady Eagles will now look to keep their fire ablaze in quick turnaround fashion tonight back home, as they prepare to host Arkport-Canaseraga in a 5 p.m. first pitch.

Wellsville 13, Cowanesque Valley 0 (F-5)

WESTFIELD, PA — After they made landfall from a successful Spring Break trip down to Myrtle Beach this past weekend, the Lady Lions of Wellsville showed absolutely no signs of letting off of the gas on Tuesday.

In their latest bus ride back down below the border to Westfield, the defending Class B State Champions took care of business once more behind the guidance of Brynn Hallock’s one-hit gem, as the offense set the tone early to set up a colossal 13-0 shutout over host Cowanesque Valley after five complete innings.

It was another day at the office for the Lady Lions (8-1), as they struck while the iron was scorching hot in the first inning with a gargantuan seven-run opening at-bat, partially generated in part by a two-run double off the bat of Emily Stuck. Out of their 11-hit display at the dish, every single Wellsville hitter garnered at least a hit, with Hallock (RBI) and Ayla Faulkner (double, RBI) paving the way forward with two of them. Averee Palmatier chipped in with a double and drove in a run.

In the midst of a furious offensive presence against Cowanesque Valley, Hallock harnessed the momentum inside the circle to lead the defense behind a magnificent one-hit twirl for the Lady Lions across all five innings of action, as she handed out nine chairs to keep the hosts silent.

The Lady Lions are tentatively set to return to action on Friday with a colossal clash of the titans against defending Class C State Finalist Bloomfield before they hit the road for Ballston Spa to partake in tournament action the following day.

Time and venue for Friday’s contest was still yet to be determined upon publication.

Bolivar-Richburg 6, Genesee Valley/Belfast 3

RICHBURG — There have been plenty of ups and downs through the first few games for the Lady Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg. With the Spring Break recess now history, a Tuesday night return to Stan Harris Field in Richburg was officially in the fold for a battle against one of Allegany County’s hottest teams to start the campaign — Genesee Valley/Belfast, winners of four of their first five.

Through some close quarters battling in the preliminary stages of the evening, the bats for each side of the field saw a big third inning spark spring to life. For the hosts in black and red, their spark illuminated the brightest, as they reversed the deficit ten-fold with a monstrous response to propel ahead in permanent fashion, scratching across six unanswered runs to springboard back above .500 for the young campaign with a 6-3 victory.

After both teams came out of the first two innings unscathed in the midst of some pressure occupying the bases, the ice was broken first by Genesee Valley/Belfast in the top of the third by posting two runs out of their five at-bats during the frame, with Jenna Hill’s RBI single helping lead the charge.

In the bottom half however, the Lady Wolverines (3-2) came right back and multiplied their response insurmountably with the hanging a five-spot onto the scoreboard, as they went an entire revolution through their lineup to seize a 5-2 lead over the visitors. Out of the runs to come across, Jayna Thomas and Rylee Whiting provided the biggest of the damage, each driving in one on a single and double, respectively.

The Lady Wolverines further bolstered their advantage during their very next presence at the dish, with Kylee Whiting supplying the team’s final run on an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth inning to claim their largest advantage of the night against Genesee Valley/Belfast.

Despite the four-run deficit entering the night’s final frame, the visitors applied one final burst of pressure, cashing in on an RBI single off the bat of Whitney Young to trim the deficit back down to three with one out. But the Lady Wolverines defense remained strong, as Rylee Whiting picked up a strikeout before fielding a grounder right back to her inside the circle to close out the victory.

Bolivar-Richburg accounted for all six runs off eight hits, with Jayna Thomas blistering the way forward with a near-completion of the cycle, going 3-for-4 with a triple, double and two runs scored. Kylee Whiting had two hits, including her fourth inning double, and a run scored, while Rylee Whiting went an immaculate 3-for-3 with two doubles and a run scored.

In the circle, Whiting collected the victory across all seven innings, fanning 11 and walking six.

For Genesee Valley/Belfast (4-2), Jenna Hill had the team’s big bat, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Kate Calanni and Addison Bradt each had a hit to chip in. On the mound, Hannah Powers went all seven innings, fanning three and walking three.

Both teams will return to action at 5 p.m. on Thursday, with the Lady Wolverines heading up the road to visit Cuba-Rushford, while Genesee Valley/Belfast heads back home to the Rich Sullivan Complex in Belfast to host Fillmore.

Andover/Whitesville 23, Hammondsport 10 (F-5)

ANDOVER — In the first game back from the Spring Break, a clamorous display of offense and special teams paved the way forward for both Hammondsport and Andover/Whitesville on Tuesday, as the two foes congealed together 33 total runs, with 22 of them originating in the first three innings of play in Andover.

Six was the lucky number on each side of the scoreboard all throughout the contest, but it was a number that bode well for the hosts, as they registered three six-run frames — two of them serving as the bookend for their battle against the visiting Lady Lakers, as they successfully raised the curtain and brought them crashing down with ease to soar towards a 23-10 home win after five complete innings.

The array of six runs started in rapid succession following an early 1-0 lead for Hammondsport, as the two teams traded three straight six-run frames beginning with a mammoth response by Andover/Whitesville (2-3) in their opening at-bats, loading the bases on several occasions to capitalize on strong base-running along the way.

The Lady Lakers propelled back ahead with a 7-6 lead in the top half of the second before the hosts fired right back with six more runs to jump back ahead, ultimately for good with a 12-7 advantage of their own. Andover/Whitesville went on to finish the night strong with their final six-run frame in the bottom of the fifth, powered up by a two-run single off the bat of Leigha Phelps.

With 23 total runs in the wagon, the Andover/Whitesville accounted for nine total hits at the dish, with Lilly Harrington leading the way with two hits. Avery Hoffman had a double to add into the mix. In the circle, the win belonged to Harrington across all five innings of work, as she struck out six and walked six.

Andover/Whitesville is back on the field Thursday night in Andover, hosting Friendship/Scio at 6 p.m.

Hinsdale 18, Friendship/Scio 11

FRIENDSHIP — Special teams were of the essence Tuesday night in Friendship, as both Hinsdale and host Friendship/Scio went back-and-forth in the heat of battle. With the hosts catapulting into the driver’s seat entering the final frame of play, the Lady Bobcats turned the momentum around in their favor with a massive game-winning finish, as they garnered their first victory of the young campaign with an 18-11 win over the road.

The Lady Bobcats (1-5) took control first and foremost during their opening at-bats, as they used a mix of walks and errors following a lead-off single from Kaylie Foskit to break the ice against Friendship/Scio. Across the next two innings, Friendship/Scio responded with five game-tying runs of their own before the back-and-forth affair continued all the way down the home stretch.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the hosts propelled ahead for the first time in the contest with a three-run stanza, claiming the 11-10 advantage. But their position in the catbird’s seat was short-lived, as Hinsdale finished off the game with eight consecutive runs in the seventh inning to claim their first win of the season.

Between both teams, just eight hits were scavenged at the plate, with Friendship/Scio (0-4) seizing the 5-3 advantage. Kaydence Sadler, Avery Lamberson, Emily Lamberson, Leanne Pierce and Alexiss Herring all had a hit to provide. In the circle, Addy Sekoll struck out seven and walked 10.

Hinsdale saw Jen Tuttle capture the victory on the mound, as she provided a dynamic 14-strikeout outing to pair with seven walks. At the plate, the Lady Bobcats garnered three hits, with Foskit, Karissa Keller and Alli Greenawalt recording one each.

Both teams return to action Thursday night, with Hinsdale heading back home to host Ellicottville in a 5 p.m. first pitch, while Friendship/Scio regroups and travels to Andover/Whitesville for battle at 6 p.m. in Andover.

Ahead of 1st home meet, Wellsville sweeps Tuesday quad-meet at B-R

BOLIVAR — The rain had put a damper on Wellsville from holding their first home meet of the season thus far in the month of April.

But with a 75-degree day filled with nothing but sunshine in store for Thursday, the long wait to finally break the ice in the Lion’s Den will soon be over. Ahead of that however, the Lions got ready for that meet and much more, as they traveled over the summit to Bolivar-Richburg and scored a complete sweep of quad-meet action against Cuba-Rushford, Friendship/Scio and the host Wolverines on Tuesday.

Both Wellsville teams were at the apex of their game from start to finish, with the boys scoring 130.5 first place points, while the Lady Lions followed suit with 127 first place points of their own. Leading the way for the boys team was defending three-time Sectional champion JJ Howard, who took matters into his own hands in all three events he won patches in for the Lions, as he scored gold in the high jump, long jump and triple jump events.

Jack Davis collected two wins of his own to help further the team’s cause, claiming first in the 400 hurdles and in the pole vault events. In addition to two relay wins in the 400 and 1600 relays, the Lions collected three more individual victories from Kam Dodge (3200 run), Xavier Scott (110 hurdles) and Derek Coleman (shot put), as the team put a wrap on a magnificent 10-win display against their respective oppositions.

For the Lady Lions, they posted eight first place finishes to go with an overwhelming bounty of secondary finishes to aid their dynamic performance across both spectrums of competition, as Kaylee Oswald and Brooklyn Dahlgren both paved the path with a pair of victories each, with Oswald re-assuming command of both throwing events, as the back-to-back State Champion triumphed in the shot put and discus events, while Dahlgren claimed gold in the high jump and long jump.

The Lady Lions also scored two relay victories in the 1600 and 3200 relays respectively to pair with two more individual wins from Caelyn Stevens (200 dash) and Ella Green (3000 run).

Both Cuba-Rushford teams placed second overall in the quad-meet, with the boys finishing with 52 points on the heels of four first place finishes — three of them from three different performers, as Sawyer Rouse (400 sprint), Joe Wojciechowski (1600 run) and Garrett Clayson (discus) scored big in their respective events. The Rebels also triumphed with the final relay win of the evening, crossing the finish line first in the 3200 relay.
