Monday Roundup: Olean spoils Wellsville’s home opener, fend off last second shot by Lions to swipe 52-51 win away; Fillmore’s Mucher registers career night to pace Lady Eagles close win over Ark-Can

WELLSVILLE — After a couple of trips out on the road to Geneseo and Midlakes, it was home sweet home for the first time this season for the Lions of Wellsville. In the same swing, Monday night also brought about a rekindling of an old rivalry from the west — the Olean Huskies, as the Section VI superpowers were welcomed into town.

For the Lions, it gave them an opportunity to construct momentum off a strong finish to their two-game road trip to open their campaign. For the Huskies, it was a chance to play spoiler.

Basketball is known to be a game of jaunts, and between the two storied squads, there were plenty of them to go around all through the 32 minutes of battle they endured. Especially in a fourth quarter where the outcome of the contest came down to one last shot. With the Huskies tilting the momentum in their favor down the homestretch, it was the Lions’ turn to try and win the game for themselves.

After an elongated game of fouls with less than a minute to go, Wellsville was granted possession for the final drive. The ball was worked up the court where Trent Green took the potential game-winning jumper inside the paint. The ball ultimately crashed into the front of the rim just as time expired, allowing the Huskies to secure the advantage with the slimmest of margins to spoil Wellsville’s home-opener with a 52-51 victory.

“I’m never a fan of losing. It never feels good and it never should. But we usually learn more from it, and we need to learn and get better at this point in the season,” said Lions coach Tom Muska. “You will lose to teams worse than turning the ball over like we did tonight. It’s hard to have a chance against a program like Olean, doing it. They mixed up their press enough to keep us uncomfortable and out of rhythm. It’s just another thing that we need to get better at handling as a team.”

Between all four quarters of play, there was no degree of separation larger than two points. There were plenty of missed opportunities across the early stages of battle, but the Lions (1-2) were able to work their way through and collect the game’s first lead off a two-handed jam from JJ Howard and a big inside jumper from Derek Coleman to set up a 6-2 advantage.

Olean ultimately fought their way back with some assistance of their own, including a clutch jumper from Adrian Bohdanowycz right before the sound of the buzzer to aid the team in finishing the first quarter with an 11-10 lead. The Lions countered the Huskies strong end to the frame with Howard once again, as he turned on the jets with baskets off back-to-back possessions to create a five-point cushion just past the midway mark of the second quarter.

Just as the momentum was beginning to settle with Wellsville to close the half, Olean had one final card left in the deck to play, putting a wrap to the frame with eight of the last 10 points off multiple Lions turnovers to tie the game at 20 going into the locker room.

The Lions steered the momentum back into their favor at the very start of the second half, beginning the stanza with a 10-3 run of Olean to grant the night’s largest lead of seven before the Huskies countered by chipping away at the third quarter deficit, closing the gap back down to a single point when time expired, heading into the final eight minutes.

It was a back-and-forth exchange of points following a 7-0 run conducted by the Huskies with a 43-all tie on the scoreboard, and with it came the fouling game, as both teams had many fouls to give in the final minute of regulation. During one of the closing sequences, Olean approached the charity stripe, looking to extend their 52-51 lead on Wellsville with 7.6 seconds left. Both shots were ultimately missed, which allowed the hosts in white and orange to collect possession of the game’s final drive.

That would set up the ball landing in the hands of Green for one final shot to potentially win the game, but the shot hit directly off the front of the rim right as the final buzzer sounded, allowing the Huskies to remain on top to exit town victorious at the end of the night.

JJ Howard led all scorers on the floor with a game-high 21 points for Wellsville, including all 10 of the team’s points in the second quarter. Right behind him was Aiden Cowburn, who continued the back-and-forth flow in the fourth quarter with a pair of three-pointers, en route to a 10-point performance. Karson Grover and Ty Vogel each had six points, while Green and Derek Coleman rounded off the scoring with four points aside.

The Lions will look to regroup this Friday night back inside the Lion’s Den, as they host the annual IAABO Tournament with a first round matchup against the C.G. Finney Falcons slated to begin in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.

Prior to the nightcap, Arkport-Canaseraga and Bolivar-Richburg will help kick off the tournament with their first-round battle commencing at 6 p.m.

Jasper-Troupsburg 59, Andover/Whitesville 45

WHITESVILLE — In a fierce offensive battle between Jasper-Troupsburg and Andover/Whitesville on Monday, each team exchanged a pair of massive first half runs to continuously tilt the balance of power in each direction. But the momentum ultimately charted its course towards the Wildcats, who finished the clash with the strongest of finishes to supply a 59-45 victory in Whitesville.

“We just didn’t have our a-game this evening. I thought we played relatively well at times, but we had way too many mental lapses to beat a quality team like Jasper-Troupsburg,” Andover/Whitesville coach Jimmy Joyce said. “Lou (Zver) had his guys ready and we seemed to be on our heels most of the night. We certainly have some slight adjustments to make moving forward, but overall I’m really happy with where we are. It’s a long season ahead.”

The Wildcats were the first to claim possession of the momentum against Andover/Whitesville (2-2), with a strong 11-point first quarter from the hand of James Ainsworth helping pay dividends from within a 20-8 advantage they carried into the next stanza.

The advantage from the visitors in black and silver would not remain in place much longer. The hosts then tilted the momentum in their favor with a trio of threes — two from Colton Calladine aiding in igniting a 19-6 half-ending run to collect a narrow 27-26 halftime lead going into the locker room. In the second half, the Wildcats resumed their takeover of the action on the floor with enough of a momentum burst in the third quarter to supply the last eight minutes of action with a dominant finish, outscoring Andover/Whitesville with a 17-7 run to finish off their eventual victory.

Ainsworth, along with Landon Zver, paved the way forward for the Jasper-Troupsburg offense, as the two shooters combined to record 40 of the team’s 59 total points, with Ainsworth’s 23 game-high points serving as the spark plug. Zver followed behind with 17 points of his own, while Gage Hall had nine points to add in for the Wildcats.

Andover/Whitesville was paced by Colton Calladine, who hit three of the team’s five three-pointers on his way to a team-high 17 points. Vinny Joyce recorded 13 points of his own, while James Miller-Young had six points.

Up next is a road trip to the Wighthouse in Cuba on Friday, as Andover/Whitesville gets set for an early clash with the Rebels of Cuba-Rushford at 7:30 p.m.

Fillmore 85, Franklinville 59

FRANKLINVILLE — A lively and chaotic start to the campaign for the Eagles of Fillmore journeyed forth into a brand new week for basketball on Monday, where they hit the road for the third time in the last four days to visit a Franklinville Panthers team that was also in the same boat with their third game in the previous four days.

But despite all the buzzing around over the road, the Eagles continued to soar by taking their buzzing to another level by keeping their foot straight down on the gas pedal with another incredible performance led by the duet of Jonah Bialek and Cam Mucher from all angles on the court, as they cruised past the Panthers with an 85-59 victory.

The high octane offense of the Eagles (3-0) was out in full force straight from the get-go, shattering through the threshold with the first of three straight 20-point frames of play, as they outscored Franklinville with a 22-9 first quarter lead behind the efforts of four different scorers.

Among them was Cam Mucher, who obstreperously caught fire in the second quarter to open the playing surface for the rest of the offense around him, netting 15 of his 21 points within the frame to aid in Fillmore’s finishing touch to a 28-point outburst to solidify their advantage for the remainder of the game.

“I was a little concerned about coming out flat and not having our legs underneath us. Thankfully, we started with good energy and applied some early pressure,” Eagles coach Randy Crouch said. “Scott’s (Shenk) guys are physical on the ball, but I was proud of how we played through the contact and attacked the rim. Cam had a monster second quarter and that freed up our shooters around him. Jameson (Rhett), Isaiah (Sisson), JD (Bialek) and Carson (Sanasith) all contributed on both ends and made the timely plays we rely on from them.”

Mucher would finish with 28 points right behind the team’s leader, Jonah Bialek, who assembled one whale of performance himself, concluding the evening with a game-high 29 points. Adding more help was JD Bialek, who delivered from inside and out, concluding with 18 points.

The Eagles will take aim at their fourth straight win to open the season on Wednesday, as they host their home opener against crosstown rival Houghton Academy at 6 p.m.

Bolivar-Richburg 41, Oswayo Valley 28

BOLIVAR — Defense was the name of the game for the Bolivar-Richburg Wolverines during their home opener on Monday, as they came together as one cohesive unit to hold visiting Oswayo Valley to under 10 points across all four quarters of play while dynamic performances from Landon Barkley and Waide Karnuth helped set the stage for what was a 41-28 victory.

The game’s first eight minutes was the only massive degree of separation between both the Green Wave and the Wolverines (2-1), as the hosts held their opposition down across the board with an early 14-7 lead that was threatened at times throughout the remainder of battle, but never surrendered.

“Those boys at Oswayo Valley can really get after it. But Waide was really hard to take out of the game. He pulled down hard rebounds, he played outstanding defense, which is this team’s calling card. The offense was still sputtering a bit, but the defense was what got us through this game tonight,” said Wolverines coach Justin Thomas. “Their stud is the (Dawson) Welch kid and he did not score at all tonight. Landon locked him up and neutralized that one big threat to allow the guys to batter down the hatches and keep things at bay with the lead the rest of the way.”

Landon Barkley was a big driving force behind the offense’s success, posting a game-high 25-point performance that also included an 8-for-10 outing at the charity stripe. Waide Karnuth also had a hand at keeping Oswayo Valley at bay from start to finish on the defensive front, transferring the momentum to his offensive game with a 10-point performance of his own.

Bolivar-Richburg will return to their home floor Wednesday night with a 7:30 p.m. contest against Friendship/Scio.

Houghton Academy 42, Hammondsport 35

HOUGHTON — Behind the dynamic duo of Josh Davidson and Jack Prentice, along with an early hot hand from outside by Hoang Phung, the Panthers of Houghton Academy were able to use their massive first quarter to build their game-long advantage. Despite visiting Hammondsport applying the pressure late, they held on until the end to claim the home-opening 42-35 edge on Monday.

The Panthers (2-0) fired on all cylinders right from the opening tip at center court, as the duo of Davidson and Prentice came together to ignite the offense with 19 combined points out of the team’s 25 in total during the first eight minute session, creating a loud burst of momentum along the way to take a 25-12 lead over the Lakers early on.

Houghton Academy then shifted gears to the second quarter, connecting with their three-point game during their 11-2 run of Hammondsport with a trio of baskets, two from the hand of Prentice to help finish off an epic 18-point first half — a game-high 20-point performance in full for the Panthers senior.

But the lead was threatened down the stretch by the Lakers, who saved their best spurt of offense for the last eight minutes, as they held Houghton Academy to just six second half points — all of which were encapsulated in a 17-6 fourth quarter run, led by Henry Morrison’s 10 points within the frame. In the end, the Panthers were able to hang on for dear life to capture the home-opening victory.

Finishing behind Prentice for the Panthers was Davidson, who recorded all nine of his points directly in the first quarter. Hoang Phung finished with eight points.

Houghton Academy heads five minutes up the road to visit their crosstown rival, the Fillmore Eagles, on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Campbell-Savona 58, Friendship/Scio 47

SCIO — Despite being held to their lowest frame of offense in the contest, the Panthers of Campbell-Savona rebounded in one of the biggest ways possible — a powerful finish, as they propelled over the top of host Friendship/Scio with an epic final eight minutes to complete their comeback victory on the road by a 58-47 count in Scio, Monday night.

It developed into as good of a start Friendship/Scio (1-1) hoped to collect out of the gate, as they put Campbell-Savona on their feet early with two controlling presences on each end of the floor to score a 10-3 lead through the first eight minutes. But from the second quarter on, the Panthers were able to slowly sway the momentum in their favor, closing the gap at halftime before completely eclipsing over their opposition across the third quarter.

WIth a one-point lead now in hand going into the last eight minutes, Campbell-Savona built upon their foundation with an absolutely brilliant finish to the evening — a 20-10 run of Friendship/Scio to extend their advantage out of reach to secure their victory.

“Credit to Campbell-Savona, Mark LaBarr is an old friend and he is going to do a great job turning their program around. They made the plays down the stretch and we didn’t,” said Friendship/Scio coach Dillon McFall. “It was a lot tighter than the score indicated, but it’s really good for us to be in these kinds of competitive games. We need to make more plays to become even more successful, and we have to take care of the basketball a lot better and become much better at the foul line. We’re getting the ball into some good areas, but when you go 4-for-21 at the line, this is the outcome that you’re going to get.”

Despite the loss, Friendship/Scio garnered solid performances from Jerome Harmon and Jerimiah Brown, with Harmon leading all scorers with a team-high 15 points and five rebounds. Brown followed with 13 points of his own to go with six additional rebounds off the glass, while Aiden Golden finished with six points.

Friendship/Scio is on the road Wednesday night, as they look to regroup and rebound in a 7:30 p.m. visit to Bolivar-Richburg.

Childs went on to lead all scorers for the Bobcats (1-2) with a game-high 21 points.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Fillmore 61, Arkport-Canaseraga 58

FILLMORE — The Rock was most certainly rocking, Monday night in Fillmore. Between the host Lady Eagles and the visiting Lady Wolves of Arkport-Canaseraga, there were plenty of three-pointers and plenty of points to go around. Following an early first quarter lead for the hosts, the action on the hardwood gradually became tighter and tighter as time went on.

So much tighter that the advantage on the scoreboard swapped hands three times in the last two minutes of play.

With Arkport-Canaseraga and Fillmore going side-by-side down the homestretch, it was anyone’s game. But ultimately, it was the Lady Eagles that wound up garnering the momentum just one more time.

A career night from Emalyn Mucher will help do just the trick.

Alongside an absolutely dominant game off the glass from Mattie McCumiskey, especially in the waning moments, the eighth grader had the performance of a lifetime, as she assembled a career-high 34 points for the Lady Eagles — one that also saw her sink six triples out of the team’s seven in total, as Fillmore managed to stealthily sneak their way past Arkport-Canaseraga for their second win of the season by a 61-58 count.

“This was a great early season matchup to be a part of. We were able to get out to an early lead, but we just couldn’t find a way to shake them,” Lady Eagles coach Tom Parks said. “They have shooters all over the floor and a good big that can hurt you inside and out. Emalyn was just incredible tonight. Every time she shot the ball, you thought it was going to go in. I was most proud of her composure when it got to crunch time, and how she handled herself against pressure. She played under control and made good decisions. As good as Emi was tonight, we needed Mattie to be our closer. She’s our most veteran player and each time they tied or took the lead down the stretch, she was there to get the ball back. She made the game-winning free throws and got a few huge rebounds to help carry us over the finish line.”

Before the fourth quarter fireworks began to settle in, the Lady Eagles (2-0) established an early lead of Arkport-Canaseraga through the first eight minutes of play, as the offense went straight to work attacking on all angles of the floor while the defense kept the Lady Wolves away from the basket for a good portion of time to settle on a 16-9 lead.

From the second quarter on, the two teams were separated by no more than three points, with each collecting a favorable run to bolster their momentum going into a hectic last eight minute session.

In the midst of a back-and-forth shoving match in the fourth quarter, the lead exchanged hands three times in the last two minutes of play after a big shot off the hand of Morgan Gilbert permitted a 55-55 tie on the board for the Lady Wolves, with Mattie McCumiskey granting the lead back to Fillmore with a lay-up. But only for a brief moment leading up to Payton O’Dell monstrous three-point shot to give the lead back to Arkport-Canaseraga.

Following a forced turnover by Mucher in the waning stages, the Lady Eagles picked the ball back up and connected on some more clutch special teams play with McCumiskey sinking two big free throws to go back on top. With the advantage in their possession, it was now on the Lady Eagles defense to hold down the fort.

Up by one, they were able to get a stop and then a big insurance basket from Morghyn Ross immediately after to extend their lead to three to ultimately survive Arkport-Canaseraga’s late and deadly threat.

On top of her career-high 34 points, Mucher would also collect four steals along the way to further her cause for Fillmore. McCumiskey finished with 12 points to go with 16 gigantic rebounds off the glass, along with five assists to finish off an incredible night. Mylee Miller chipped in with six points and grabbed eight more boards.

Arkport-Canaseraga was paced by O’Dell and her team-high 23 points. Kara Mahany had 14 points, while Gracen Mahany netted 12.

Fillmore will look to make it a 3-0 start on the season coming up on Wednesday, visiting Allegany-Limestone in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.

Genesee Valley/Belfast 44, Campbell-Savona 23

CAMPBELL — They were able to build an early lead across the first eight minutes, and soon after, Whitney Young helped take over the Genesee Valley/Belfast offense in a second quarter that made a world of difference on the road against the Lady Panthers of Campbell-Savona on Monday, as they rebounded from this past weekend’s Belmont Rotary Club Tournament with a strong 44-23 victory.

“I thought we did some good things defensively and stayed the course through various stretches,” said GV/Belfast coach Raegan Ryan. “What has impressed me the most, is how unselfish this group is. They genuinely want their teammates to succeed on the floor. They’re playing for one another and they are hungry to improve. It’s really great to see them grow.”

There was a tremendous balance of offense across the board to help propel Genesee Valley/Belfast (2-1) over the top early on, with at least five different scorers all finding scoresheet in three of the four quarters of action. That included the first half, where an 8-3 first quarter lead transformed into an insurmountable advantage in the next eight minute session.

That was caused by the hand of Whitney Young, who assembled her best performance of the young season so far, sinking both of the team’s three-pointers from outside in the midst of a game-altering 16-5 run of the Lady Panthers to finish the night with a game-high 13 points.

Sophie Zillgitt helped the cause further with eight points of her own, while Kate Calanni had six points.

Genesee Valley/Belfast will now head for Franklinville on Wednesday to partake in the annual Rick Hughes Memorial Tournament, as they prepare for a first-round matchup against the Portville Lady Panthers beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Andover/Whitesville 50, Friendship/Scio 9

FRIENDSHIP — The Andover/Whitesville ladies are full steam ahead to start their campaign on the hardwood. Fresh off a dynamic Belmont Rotary Club Tournament championship, they carried all their momentum into Monday night’s battle with Friendship/Scio by registering a first half-ending explosion that they never looked back from to finish the night with their fourth straight win — a 50-9 decision in Friendship.

Three different Andover/Whitesville (4-0) scorers all eclipsed the 10-point plateau to aid in keeping their regular season-starting fire ablaze, with Olivia Waters helping lead the charge across the floor with a game-high 15 points. The visitors in black built off an early first quarter lead in style to close out the half, as they put all the pieces together on a gargantuan 20-5 run that allowed them to pull away from Friendship/Scio permanently.

Following up right behind Waters was Graci Lewis-Ellison, who finished with 14 points of her own. Stella Bledsoe chipped in with 10 points, while Reece Winters had five.

Friendship/Scio (0-2) was paced by Kaydence Sadler and her four points and six rebounds. Emily Lamberson also had six rebounds to further the special teams cause. The team hits the road Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. visit to Campbell-Savona.

Andover/Whitesville is now off until next Wednesday night back home in Andover, as they look for their fifth straight win to open up the season with a 7:30 p.m. visit from the Fillmore Lady Eagles.

Cuba-Rushford 57, Olean 19

OLEAN — A scorching hot start for the Lady Rebels of Cuba-Rushford struck all chords on Monday, as several different contributors all helped the team’s cause from start to finish to set up their season-sweep of the Olean Lady Huskies over the road, claiming a dominant 57-19 victory — their fourth in their first five games of the campaign.

The Lady Rebels (4-1) broke the ice in a massive way right out of the gate in the opening eight minutes, as several different scorers, including a nine-point frame from Cloey Larabee, delivered a game-shattering 22-point frame while the defense kept the Lady Huskies at bay all throughout, allowing just a single field goal — a Alaina Hirliman three-pointer, to set the bar going forward.

“I was really happy with our intensity right from tip-off tonight. Offensively, it was nice to see so many girls contribute. We created some turnovers early that got us some easy points in transition, which was something that really allowed us to get going." Lady Rebels coach Aaron Wight said.

Larabee wound up finishing as Cuba-Rushford’s leading scorer at the end of the night, finishing with a game-high 13 points. Right behind her was Lily Tompkins, who posted 11 points of her own. Brynn Lavery chipped in with nine points.

The Lady Rebels hop right back on the hardwood tonight, this time back home, as they play host to Bolivar-Richburg in a 6 p.m. contest.
