Tuesday Roundup: Lady Rebels stay hot, score 5th win in 1st 6 games of young season with dominant performance over rival B-R; C-R boys volleyball downed by Portville in 4 sets

CUBA — The Lady Rebels of Cuba-Rushford have been red hot since the start of the season just a couple of weeks ago. On a quiet Tuesday night around much of the area, their fire burned even brighter back inside the Wighthouse, where they utilized another rapid start in the opening eight minutes of play to gallop right past their longtime rival Bolivar-Richburg with a 40-17 victory.

No time was wasted putting the gas down to the floor early on for the Lady Rebels (5-1), as five different scorers all pitched in to ignite the team’s cause with a massive 17-6 run of the Lady Wolverines in the first quarter, establishing a lead that was never relinquished going forward.

Two of those scorers eclipsed the 10-point plateau along the way, with Brynn Lavery’s hot hand in the first half leading the charge, as she recorded a game-high 15 points. Right behind her was Lily Tompkins, who had 11 more points to add in — eight of them coming from within a 14-2 third quarter run that cemented the advantage for the hosts in white and blue permanently. Aubrey Williams had five more points to contribute for the offense.

Bolivar-Richburg (0-2) was led by Raegan Giardini and her team-leading eight points. The Lady Wolverines are back on the floor Friday night with a 6 p.m. visit to Canisteo-Greenwood.

Cuba-Rushford is off until Thursday, when they welcome in New Life Christian for battle at 6 p.m.

PENN YAN — Canisteo-Greenwood was chased down by Penn Yan all through the first half, but an opening was created right after halftime when the Lady Chargers defense put up their strongest stand of the game to keep the Lady Mustangs at a near standstill Tuesday night, as they scurried away and towards an eventual 47-33 win to open up their young campaign with a third straight victory.

Out of the 23 total first half points that the Lady Chargers (3-0) accumulated to develop their lead against Penn Yan, the majority of those points were collected at the charity stripe, as the team came together as a collective to record a 10-for-14 outing at the stripe to go with just four field goals on the attack — three of them from three-point land, two by Anna Mitchell to help get the offense moving with a 23-16 lead at the break.

With the momentum remaining in their favor upon their return to the hardwood for second half, the Lady Chargers made sure it remained there in the third quarter behind the contributions of four different scorers, who posted what was an 11-3 run of Penn Yan to make sure they left their opposition in the rearview mirror going forward.

Bailey Mullen was one of three Canisteo-Greenwood shooters to eclipse double digits on the attack, finishing with 18 game-high points along with 11 rebounds to complete her double-double. MacKenna Mullen pitched with 13 points of her own, while Mitchell concluded with 11 points and five more rebounds.
