Monday Roundup: Lady Lions cap off 12-point 2nd half comeback, Costello hits massive free throws to finish 42-41 thriller; GV/Belfast girls capture 10th win in last 11 with home triumph over Fri/Scio

WELLSVILLE — The Lady Lions of Wellsville are putting together as solid of basketball as anyone not only in Allegany County, but across the area. And it could not have come at a better time on the schedule with a short distance to go until the Sectional fever makes its arrival in two weeks.

The team has put together six straight wins, the majority of them have come with dominant showings, including big victories over both Canisteo-Greenwood and Hornell. Some of them on the other hand, have been gritty, like last Tuesday’s massive Class B2 collision against Bath-Haverling, where the Lady Lions overcame a first half deficit to rally back for victory.

It’s funny how history can repeat itself sometimes. One week later in another slugfest, the Lady Lions had to provide another gritty game, this time against another Class B2 titan in Dansville.

It was a battle that Wellsville found themselves having to dig and claw their way back from. After a second quarter that saw them lose the lead exponentially when the break approached. As a result, it prompted a conversation in the locker room between head coach Michelle Alvord and her squad.

The goal coming back out: Get back to doing what they do best — controlling the boards.

“We needed to hit the boards, and we needed to adjust defensively on their shooters in the corners,” she said. “When the ball was on the opposite, we wanted to stay home for the most part, and we wanted to be more aggressive. Jaelyn (Knapp) is a big rebounder, and she didn’t have a rebound in the first half, and that was a big thing coming back out for the second half.”

The game can be categorized as a tale of two halves for the Lady Lions. Although the deficit put on by the Lady Mustangs grew to as much as 12 at one point during the second half, it would never eclipse that point for the remainder of the game. At the same time, it would provide a chance for the hosts to fight back.

Did they ever.

After a string of possessions saw Wellsville account for a big scoreless run to pull slightly ahead of Dansville coming down the stretch, it would set up shop for some defensive fireworks in the last 90 seconds. In the last possession for each team, a crucial moment formulated, beginning with the Lady Lions defense committing a foul to set up the Lady Mustangs at the line, where they would take the lead after one of two made from the stripe.

Back down the court for the Lady Lions off advancement, the same would occur against Dansville to send them to the line. But this time, it was for all the marbles with under two seconds left. The spark plug that makes Wellsville’s engine go, Emily Costello, had just six points in the contest — two of them came at the very most important time.

From the line.

With no time removed off the clock, Costello absolutely nailed both of her free throws at the charity stripe to send the Lady Lions back ahead of Dansville, forcing a desperation shot at the end which did not go, allowing Wellsville to cap off a 12-point second half comeback to pick up their seventh straight victory by a 42-41 count in a thriller on Monday in the Lion’s Den.

“That was clutch what she did. She has the heart of a champion, and she stepped up to the line to hit those shots, and as a Senior, she absolutely nailed it,” Alvord praised Costello. “We talk about it all the time, she’s like a second coach out there, directing traffic with the girls. They didn’t get rattled, even during the timeout leading up to those shots. They did a stand-up job on defense to set it up, and the rest was on her.”

Before the endgame heroics by the Lady Lions (13-2) helped set up the win, they would have to do some digging through the first half. A half that was commandeered by the Lady Mustangs after trailing by a 13-9 count after the opening quarter.

Dansville stepped up to the plate and delivered a second quarter grand slam from way downtown to help set up a massive 13-2 run to end the half, 10 of those being scored consecutively led by a flurry of three-pointers, hitting three of them in a span of just over three minutes to take the lead away from Wellsville and build upon it going into the break.

At the same time, the Lady Lions could not cash in themselves on the opposite end of the floor.

“We were getting good looks, but we weren’t giving ourselves very many second chance opportunities, and we weren’t rebounding as well,” said Alvord. “The number one key was to control the boards, and when we did on defense, we were able to do some fast breaks and get some easy buckets. But early on, those easy buckets weren’t falling. We had to rebound, and it may sound super simple, but that was the bottom line.”

Sitting in an early hole going into the second half, and with the momentum that the Lady Mustangs held, the Lady Lions had to act quickly.

Although the deficit grew to as large as 12 during the third quarter at one point with more assistance coming from outside the arc again for the Lady Mustangs, the hosts in white and orange would not let it faze them, trimming the deficit to a reachable distance going into the last eight minutes, down by a 37-31 count.

The fourth quarter was the last chance for the Lady Lions to strike while they began to warm up at the end of the third, and Marley Adams would help that cause almost immediately by draining a triple that would engineer a run of the Lady Mustangs that reached nine straight to take the lead away by a 40-37 count.

But after a long three by Dansville tied the game once more at 40, it would remain as such through the last 90 seconds of the game, where the special teams play came at the most crucial point of the evening. The Lady Mustangs had their first crack and breaking the deadlock with one shot made out of two possible at the stripe to jump ahead.

That came with 1.9 seconds remaining on the clock.

After a timeout on the floor to force advancement on the way back down, the Lady Lions prepared to set up shop for what could have been a pass-and-shoot, but the Lady Mustangs defense committed a foul that allowed a chance to take the lead back with absolutely no time being removed from the clock.

Enter Emily Costello, who drained perhaps the two biggest shots at the charity stripe this season for the Lady Lions to give them back the lead for good, as Dansville’s last second attempt hit the rim and bounced to the floor to cap off a fantastic second half comeback.

“The plays that led to everything that happened in the end, Kaylee (Coleman) with the big rebounds, Emily had her hand in the mix, Marley with that big three-pointer, there’s no question that definitely propelled us,” Alvord said. “For as much as we were down, this team absolutely doesn’t quit. They kept after it, kept chipping away, talked to each other, helped each other and they were able to finish the job.”

Adams would lead another well-balanced effort on offense for Wellsville, netting a game-high 13 points to pair alongside with six rebounds and five assists. Jaelyn Knapp finished with eight points, while Costello and Makenna Dunbar each had six points, with Costello handing out seven assists in the process. Off the boards, Kaylee Coleman led that department with seven.

Prior to the Varsity contest, the Lady Lions succumbed to a 42-31 defeat to the hands of Dansville. Despite the loss, Averee Palmatier led the scoring for the hosts with 10 points.

The Lady Lions are now on the road for the next three games beginning on Wednesday before returning back home one last time in the regular season for Senior Night on February 15, as they visit the Portville Lady Panthers in a 7:30 p.m. battle to kick it off.

Alvord hopes the next three games will help her squad rise to the challenge, especially with Sectionals knocking on the door.

“Portville’s going to be a formidable opponent, and I’m glad we had this game against Dansville tonight,” she said. “Portville plays a similar style of basketball like them. They have a big girl inside, and the Welty girls from outside can do some damage. They have Seniors, and they’ve played with Inga (Welty) for a long time, but the last two games against Bath and now this one, we’ve faced man-to-man. I don’t expect this one on Wednesday to go any differently. It’s always an interesting trip over to Section VI, but I’m definitely looking forward to seeing the girls rise to the challenge.”

Andover/Whitesville 56, Addison 46

ADDISON — Both Andover/Whitesville and host Addison provided an exchange of pleasantries through the opening quarter that saw a one-point lead from the visitors arise. It was also become a boost of momentum to provide toward what was their biggest offensive stand of the night to end a first half of the loudest of notes.

Even though the Lady Knights provided some late pressure coming down the stretch, Andover/Whitesville was able to hang onto their lead they built from the first half and put towards a triumphant finish, as they sweep their season series with a 56-46 road win on Monday.

“We did a lot of good things in the first half,” said Andover/Whitesville co-coach Jake Bannerman. “We moved the ball well, and played solid defense. In the second half, Addison brought more pressure and we started to get very lazy and careless with the basketball. They climbed back into the game because of that, and luckily we had enough of a cushion to win. Closing out games is something the girls need to focus on as we get down to the wire heading into Sectionals.”

After Andover/Whitesville (11-3) gathered the lead over Addison behind a balanced attack through the opening eight minutes, they would proceed to split the game open even further, with the three-point game of Serena Ainsworth coming into play, knocking down all three of her treys right before the half’s conclusion to pair with the inside presences of Vanessa Hall, Rachel Jackson and Maria Riloba, who all had a hand in a 19-7 second quarter run that would become the difference.

In turn on defense, Andover/Whitesville held Addison down to just two shots from the field, both from outside to complete a 32-19 lead going into the locker room.

The Lady Knights would not go down without one last word in the second half, saving their best offensive effort for last to cut their deficit to as little as 10 at game’s end. But the second quarter run by Andover/Whitesville would prove to be too much to overcome.

Hall would lead all scorers for Andover/Whitesville with a game-high 29 points to pair with nine rebounds. Following was Ainsworth’s nine-point effort from downtown, while Riloba and Jackson finished with seven points. In addition, Riloba grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds to pair with four assists and four steals, while Jackson chipped in with six rebounds and six assists of her own.

Andover/Whitesville is back on the floor Wednesday night back home, as they welcome in the Hammondsport Lady Lakers for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off in Whitesville.

Genesee Valley/Belfast 48, Friendship/Scio 24

BELFAST — It was as good of a first half start that you could ask for on Monday for the Lady JagDogs of Genesee Valley/Belfast, as they powered up a big 16-2 run led by a game-high performance from Mary Hamer down low in what was their 10th victory in the last 11 games, defeating visiting Friendship/Scio by a 48-24 victory in Belfast.

“Mary and Kait (Sadler) worked well together again for us tonight,” said GV/Belfast coach Jim Schneider. “We had a whopper of a first half, and we’ve been trying new things in practice, trying to get more inside movement and it seems to be working well for them. My guards are good about finding them down low, and they put those away. We rebounded well, we transitioned well. Everything we worked hard on for the last few years is starting to come through.”

The run built by Genesee Valley/Belfast (12-3) through the first eight minutes of play was one that ultimately put them into the lead for good, as Hamer scored 12 of the team’s 16 points in the midst of their 16-2 beginning. The lead was branched out insurmountably in the second quarter, taking the 33-7 lead going into the half after a 17-5 run which saw Kaitlin Sadler provide 10 of her 16 points within the frame from down low.

Hamer would lead all scorers for the Lady JagDogs with a game-high 20 points, with Sadler following behind with her 16. Helping further the cause was Alicia Borden, who chipped in with eight points of her own.

Friendship/Scio (5-9) was paced by a team-high six point effort from Kiara Grover. Jenn Dickens and Melana Davenport each provided five points.

Both teams will hit the road for their next contests this week, as Genesee Valley/Belfast looks to continue their hot streak with a Wednesday night visit to Houghton Academy beginning in a 5 p.m. tip-off, while Friendship/Scio looks to rebound with a 6 p.m. road trip to Lima Christian.

“It’s nothing on me, but the girls are working hard, and after introducing new things, they grabbed a hold of it and went with it,” said Schneider. “We’ve been fortunate, and my son Carter has brought some new ideas and some of my old ideas we’re mixing together, and the girls are buying in. They’re playing really well because of it. I’m very excited because we’re at the number two seed in Sectionals right now. Our original goal was to be .500, and we have surpassed that by a ton.”

Fillmore 33, Jasper-Troupsburg 19

GREENWOOD — The Lady Eagles of Fillmore had a slow start through the opening quarter that saw host Jasper-Troupsburg travel right alongside them. Despite a narrow deficit to overcome, it was a start that the Lady Eagles were able to shake off quickly, as the defense buckled down to halt further damage in a 33-19 road win in Greenwood, Monday night.

Through the opening quarter, the Lady Wildcats won the closely-contested first eight minutes one of the State’s best, trading baskets until they came away with a 13-12 lead. From the second quarter onward, the Lady Eagles (16-0) were able to shake off the slow start and put down a defensive performance of immense magnitude, holding their opposition to just six more points.

In turn, the offense cashed in on opportunities themselves, combining for 21 more points, including a 7-0 third quarter run after an 18-15 lead at the break, pulling away for good.

Emma Cole and Jadyn Mucher were two of the big driving forces behind Fillmore’s success down low, with Cole leading the charge behind a 14-point, 12-rebound double-double. Mucher chipped in 11 points of her own, while Grace Russell tallied the remaining eight points to pair with four assists.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Wellsville 86, Cuba-Rushford 37

CUBA — It’s been a long time since a juggernaut-esque performance was recorded by the Wellsville Lions on the hardwood. You’d have to flip the calendar all the way back to the 2015-16 season — the first under head coach Raymie Auman, when the team posted 86 points in a victory over Campbell-Savona.

Six years later against another hyphenated school, the Lions saw every scorer on the floor and on the bench get involved in their biggest performance of the season, netting a campaign-high 86 points to spring ahead and back over .500, as they completed an 86-37 road win inside the Wighthouse against host Cuba-Rushford on Monday.

“It was a great team win tonight. We finally put together a game where we made some shots and play great defense along with it. With a few games left on our schedule, I hope tonight’s game helped gain some more confidence going into Sectionals.” said Lions coach Raymie Auman.

Four different scorers eclipsed double figures to set the tone for the Wellsville (8-7) offense, with Eli Schmidt paving the way toward a game-high 22 points. Logan Dunbar chipped in with his inside presence netting 15 points of his own, while Cody Costello flared up from three-point range by netting four of the team’s eight in all, for 12 points. Alex Perkins helped the cause for the Lions with 10 points.

It was a 17-10 lead after the first quarter the visitors in black and orange never looked back on, as their offense dominated the end of the first half and the start of the second half, heading into the locker room with a 45-21 lead in hand after 28 second quarter points and then building on it with 30 more inside a 30-11 third quarter run to seal the deal on the victory.

On the other side of the floor, the Rebels (7-6) were led by both Jacob Smith and Brayden Lavery, as they each recorded eight points. Austin Clement had six points.

The Lions will now have a long nine-day reprieve from action, as they hit the road once more next Wednesday night by paying a visit to The Rock to take on the Fillmore Eagles in a 7:30 p.m. contest. As for Cuba-Rushford, they will look to bounce back on their home floor Friday night with a 7:30 p.m. visit slated from Bolivar-Richburg.

Belfast 42, Andover/Whitesville 27

WHITESVILLE — Belfast and Andover/Whitesville fought their way through a dead even first quarter of play to begin the night on Monday.

But a turning of the tables would occur in the next few quarters of play, as the visiting Bulldogs took advantage of some key special teams at the charity stripe to end a solid first half that saw them take the lead ultimately for good in a 42-27 win against Andover/Whitesville.

Both teams would showcase a balanced offensive output through the opening eight minute period, as they came across a 9-9 deadlock to break. In the second quarter, it would provide a chance for Belfast (11-4) to break things open, despite being held scoreless from the field.

All eight of their points in the midst of an 8-2 run of Andover/Whitesville (5-9) were tallied from the charity stripe, going 8-for-12 in all while holding the hosts to just one shot from inside to break the deadlock, and earn a 17-11 lead at the break.

The special teams play would provide a jolt of momentum for the Bulldogs to use coming back out for the second half, as the offense, led by Anthony Logue and Matt Weaver, began to hit strides with a 15-7 third quarter run that saw them keep their foot down on the gas pedal and race away towards victory permanently.

Logue and Weaver would become Belfast’s top scorers, as they combined for 30 of the team’s 42 points, with Logue scoring a game-high 16 points. Weaver added in 14 points of his own, while Max Miller had five to pitch in.

Andover/Whitesville was led by CJ Estep, who tallied a team-high 11 points. Luke Erdmann sank a pair of three-pointers, for six points to assist in the cause.

Both teams are right back on the floor this evening in a pair of 7:30 p.m. battles, as Belfast heads back home to welcome in the Bolivar-Richburg Wolverines, while Andover/Whitesville prepares for a trip to The Rock to visit the Eagles of Fillmore.

Mount Morris 68, Friendship/Scio 53

MOUNT MORRIS — Friendship/Scio was well within striking distance of Mount Morris coming down the homestretch, cutting their deficit to as small as seven at one point. But the host Blue Devils remained vigilant on defense to keep their visiting opposition held at bay, as they were able to hang on and survive a 68-53 duel on Monday in Class D action.

“They had the lead on us the whole game, and we came out in the third and we started playing better defense to stay right along with them,” said Friendship/Scio co-coach Dillon McFall. “We had it down to seven in the fourth with five minutes left, and we just had a couple of empty possessions where we couldn’t really get a basket. The (Stephen) Somers kid is one of the best players we’ve seen all year. We’re in a transition on defense now where we’re still in the process of learning how to guard people. We’re showing glimpses, but there are times where we aren’t doing it the way we should, and it’s cost us.”

Stephen Somers was a huge reason behind Mount Morris’ success through the entire contest, as she scored a game-high 30 point performance to pace the offense, which began the night with a pair of 18-point quarters in the opening half, including an 18-10 lead after the opening eight minutes.

Friendship/Scio (7-9) countered with an attack of their own powered by the efforts of both Lazar Bulajic and Brenden Loucks to keep pace right next to the Blue Devils, as the two junior shooters combined to tally 35 of the team’s 53 points in all, with Loucks leading the way behind a team-high 20 points.

The visitors in blue and gold would garner an edge in the third quarter that would allow them to cut their deficit down to 11 heading into the last quarter. But it was a double digit lead that Mount Morris would continue to hold through the majority of the final eight minute stanza, despite Friendship/Scio cutting the deficit to as small as seven, as they held on to pick up the win.

Bulajic would finish behind Loucks in the Friendship/Scio scorebook with 15 points. Ethan Davenport chipped in with seven points of his own.

Friendship/Scio is right back to work again tonight on the road, as they prepare for a 7:30 p.m. visit to the Bobcats of Hinsdale.

Jasper-Troupsburg 43, Genesee Valley 19

BELMONT — The Wildcats of Jasper-Troupsburg came together for a strong first half performance on both ends of the floor, holding host Genesee Valley to just eight points while in the midst of a jaunt that would keep them one step ahead the remainder of the way, rolling toward a 43-19 road win over the Jaguars on Monday.

Through a first quarter battle, the Wildcats emerged with a six-point lead to work with against the Jaguars (3-11) heading into the second. Up 11-5, the lead would grow immensely after a breakaway 10-3 run through the half-ending frame set the bar for the remainder of the way, keeping the visitors in black and gray in the driver’s seat.

Just three scorers found the basket for Genesee Valley, with Morgan Torrey leading all scorers with 14 of the team’s 19 points. Thai Norasethaporn recorded three points, while Max Wedge added in the remaining basket from inside the arc to help the cause.

The Jaguars are back on the road Wednesday night with a 6:45 p.m. visit in store to Houghton Academy.
