Tuesday Roundup: Wolverines head into Sectionals with full head of steam, coast past Addison; Rebels, Ark/Can post home triumphs to meet for County’s Volleyball title

ADDISON — Just a few days remain before Sectionals arrives for wrestlers across the area, including the Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg, who were looking to add one last burst of momentum heading into a tournament with a crown they have successfully defended for three straight years.

Now with a chance to go for the historic four-peat on the table, the Wolverines were looking to provide a strong finish to yet another phenomenal campaign on the mat, taking a road trip to Addison to close it out on Tuesday.

Despite the Knights starting off with an early lead behind back-to-back victories, the wins would soon mount up for Bolivar-Richburg, as they went on to record four of the next five to overtake Addison in the driver’s seat, settling for eight total victories altogether to roll their way toward a 42-15 victory.

The Wolverines found their winning ways after Addison started the match with two straight wins out of the gate, beginning with a 6-5 decision at 160 pounds from Trent Watson over Caden Allen. The response came with three straight wins, including back-to-back forfeits for Phil MacDonell and Trent Sibble at 189 and 215 pounds, respectively, and the team’s first win on the mat coming from Lloyd Kinnicutt at 285 pounds, defeating his opponent via pin-fall with just 39 seconds left in the match.

Both teams would trade double forfeits in two of the next three matches. Sandwiched in between was another Wolverines win on the mat from Gary McDowell, who took an 8-2 decision during his bout at 110 pounds. Bolivar-Richburg would go on to finish the match with four of the last five matches in the win column, garnering three more victories in action.

Trey Buchholz would begin the winning ways once more for the visitors in black and red, coming up with a 6-1 decision at 126 pounds. After an Addison forfeit win at 132 pounds, Ethan Coleman would come up with the team’s quickest pin in just 27 seconds to continue the damage.

To round off, Kadin Tompkins picked up a forfeit triumph at 145 pounds, and then a pin-fall win in 59 seconds was recorded by Tavyn MacDonell at 152 pounds to officially close the book on their regular season.

With the season finale victory over the Knights now in their back pocket, the race for the Wolverines to return to the top of Section V supremacy once again now begins, as the Class B3 Tournament gets set to begin in Lyndonville on Saturday.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Bolivar-Richburg 61, Belfast 32

BELFAST — The Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg were on the mend after being dealt a devastating blow to the hands of Wellsville once more this past week, after a second half rally saw the Lions sweep the Wolverines on the season.

To get back on track, they took a trip to Belfast on Tuesday. From the start, the action began to look up for the Wolverines, holding a hefty lead going into the break. In the second half, all the pieces to their puzzle began to fall into place.

With a 27-12 lead in hand, it would grow exponentially, as the Wolverines came out in the second half on full blast with a massive third quarter run that saw them coast away out of Belfast’s reach and towards victory, hopping back into the win column before their colossal Wednesday road trip to Class D’s top team Avoca/Prattsburgh, with a 61-32 win over the Bulldogs.

“It was closer than what it ended up being, and it was a pretty ho-hum kind of game,” Wolverines coach Jeff Margeson said. “I was happy with the defense that we played in the first half, and they played well because of it. Belfast played excellently themselves, and got into a position to chip away at us at one point. They spread the court out, used the clock and slowed us down on the transition. We did break away in the second half with some big buckets on the break.”

The Wolverines (10-4) raced towards a lead that Landon Danaher helped develop from the start, as he assisted in charging up a 17-5 first quarter run by scoring seven of those points in the midst of a balanced attack, while the defense held Belfast to just two shots from the field, both from Matt Weaver from inside and out.

With a 12-point lead, it would grow to 15 at the break, as the visitors in black and red dueled with the Bulldogs (11-5) through the second quarter, with the balance paving the Wolverines and the efforts of Anthony Logue coming into to play for the hosts in white and red.

But in the third quarter, it saw Danaher provided a stellar offensive effort to power the run that Bolivar-Richburg was looking for — a 22-7 jaunt led by 13 of his remaining points that saw them break free and towards the win down the stretch, as they held on to successfully complete their rebound game.

Danaher would finish with a game-high 20 points to pace the Wolverines. Aydin Sisson chipped in with 11 points, while Wyatt Karnuth provided some offensive firepower of his own, adding in 10 points.

Belfast saw Logue take command of the offense, climbing to the top behind a team-high 13 points. Weaver completed his evening with 10 points, while Daemen Cobb had four points to contribute for the Bulldogs, who are now off until next Wednesday night with a 7:30 p.m. road trip to Scio to visit host Friendship/Scio.

As for the Wolverines, they will hop back onto the bus tonight with a titanic 7:15 p.m. tip-off in Avoca, as they get set to go toe-to-toe with New York State’s top-ranked Class D school — unbeaten Avoca/Prattsburgh in what was originally scheduled to be a contest for this season’s Dan Barkley Showcase.

Through the first eight minutes of play inside The Rock, the host Eagles of Fillmore hit a home run with an offense that struck chords from all different angles on the floor, propelling towards a 30-point opening session that ultimately set the tone on their 76-41 home win over Andover/Whitesville, Tuesday night.

“We continue to get balanced efforts across the board. Tonight, Will (Roeske) got off to a great start, and once they adjusted, Zach (Sisson) took over. The rest of the team did a great job of taking advantage of their opportunities,” said Eagles coach Randy Crouch. “I was really pleased with how we are learning to play off each other’s strengths, and that showed with a ton of assists on our 31 total field goals. We have a stretch of five games in nine days starting Thursday, so hopefully we can keep up this momentum.”

From virtually everywhere on the floor, the Eagles (11-3) saw some scoring contributions from five different shooters, with Will Roeske kicking off the offense down low before Mitch Ward and Zach Sisson helped the cause tremendously with games of their own, including Sisson from long range as he hit all four of his three-pointers in the opening eight minutes to help engineer a 30-7 run that ultimately set the tone for the rest of the night.

Friendship/Scio 49, Hinsdale 33

HINSDALE — It was the fastest of starts through an opening half that Friendship/Scio has been able to put together on Tuesday, as they took complete command on both ends of the hardwood to come up with a massive run that saw them take a double-digit lead and hold it for the rest of the way, securing a 49-33 road win in Hinsdale.

It was as good of a start that Friendship/Scio (8-9) provided through not only the first eight minutes, but the entire 16 minute first half, as they started hot out of the gate with a 17-3 run before adding onto it with a second quarter 19-2 run that would ultimately pushout their lead insurmountably behind a balanced offensive attack.

Lazar Bulajic was one of the big reasons behind the team’s success, providing a strong inside presence to gather a game-high 20 points to couple with 10 rebounds and five steals to finish a double-double. From the outside, the hand of Taylor Moore was red hot, as he scored four of Friendship/Scio’s five three-pointers to put toward a 14-point effort. Ethan Davenport pitched in with nine points of his own to pair with 10 rebounds, nearly completing a double-double of his own.

On the flip side for the Bobcats (0-11), Sam Cashimere led the way with a team-high 10 points. Cody Barton added in eight points.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Rebels, Wolves to meet in County Title Game after home Semi victories

ARKPORT/CUBA — The final two days of the boys volleyball season have arrived, Tuesday night, beginning with a pair of Semifinals matches to determine who will vie for this year’s Allegany County Championship in just 24 hours.

Beginning with the Lions of Wellsville, the defending champions, who found themselves one step away from returning to the big game to defend their crown. In order to do that, they would have to work their way past an Arkport/Canaseraga team that has been primarily dominant all season long.

The Lions gave the No. 2 Wolves everything they could handle across the evening, but in the end, it would be the hosts in black and teal that came away victorious, sealing the deal on their trip to the Finals by winning the extra serve battle in the night’s third set to perform the season-ending sweep against Wellsville, howling toward a 25-18, 25-18, 26-24 finish.

“I had a team that was brand new to the sport other than two players. The growth that these kids had throughout the season, was incredible,” Lions coach Adam Kellogg said. “The guys played their hearts out at every game, and they gave it their all in this one tonight. I couldn’t have made this season the way it was without our Seniors. To Matt, Mason and Luke, I thank them for being there to help the newcomers and teaching what it’s like to be a part of a family. They will be missed next year, but they helped build a team who will have a great start to build on for next Winter.”

The Lions (9-5) were led by the efforts from Xavier Scott, who tallied nine service points to pair with six kills, three aces and two digs. Mason Parks helped further the cause with seven more service points of his own to couple with three additional kills, three digs and two aces, while setter Matt Bittel dished out 10 assists at the net.

Arkport/Canaseraga’s trip to the Finals was fueled by a 10 kill, three block, two ace effort from Riley Smith.

As for who the Wolves will face on Wednesday, it was a neck-and-neck battle in the second Semifinal battle between Bolivar-Richburg and Cuba-Rushford through the middle sets after the top-seeded Rebels rolled toward the early lead.

With each team trading a set that would see the hosts push the Wolverines to the brink entering the fourth set, they would continue to take matters into their own hands, as they managed to secure their spot in the Finals behind their most dominant set of the night, flying past Bolivar-Richburg with a four-set win by a 25-12, 23-25, 25-22, 25-7 decision.

“We prepared for the Bolivar-Richburg team we played all season, but they were a different team today,” said Rebels coach Nick Perillo. “They covered the floor so well, and their strengths were even stronger. I give a ton of credit to them for that. I’m super proud of the boys to deal with a few frustrating sets, and really buckle down to get the win. Everyone played well and found a way to get the win as a team. We’re excited to be playing for another County title, this time at home.”

The Rebels (14-0) could not have glued together a performance that would send them back to the Finals without an attack that was paced by Logan Lewis, who was dominant up front with a game-high 13 kills to pair with five aces from the service line. Nate Cole added onto it with six more kills of his own, recording three aces and two blocks to continue fueling Cuba-Rushford’s fire.

In addition, Rebels setter Allen Fuller was busy handing out assists, gathering 28 in all to pair with seven more aces, and one kill.

Individual statistics for the Wolverines were not made available to report upon publication, as their season comes to a close by wrapping up their 2021-22 season with a record of 5-9.

As for tonight’s County Title game, that will take place from within the confines of the Wighthouse, where the unbeaten top-seeds in the Rebels will look to capture their second County crown in the last three seasons by taking on their second-seeded counterparts representing Arkport/Canaseraga.

Both teams split their regular season series entering the rubber match. First serve is slated to begin at 6 p.m.
