Friday Roundup: Lady Panthers outlast Lady Jays behind five-run 5th inning; Lady Wolverines win 3rd home tourney title in last 4 seasons

ANDOVER — It came right down to the wire when the Lady Jays of Whitesville and the Lady Panthers of Andover did battle for the first of two meetings on Friday.

With a back and forth swing throughout the game, Whitesville took a 4-3 lead heading into the remaining two innings of play. But in the bottom of the sixth, the Lady Panthers brought everything to life, as they scored a five-run frame to take the lead away for good, despite late pressure to earn their first win of the season by an 8-7 count.

Along with the first win of the season for Andover (1-3), it was the first in the Varsity career for Makaila Brewster in the circle, as she held Whitesville to six hits across five strikeouts and seven walks. Brewster also had one of the big bats at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double.

Leading the Andover offense was Katie Calladine, who went 4-for-4 with a triple.

Although the Lady Panthers hopped into the driver’s seat, the Lady Jays (0-3) threatened to unbuckle them until the very end, coming up with a three-run seventh to cut their deficit down from four to a single run. But Andover was able to hang on to pick up the win.

Rachel Jackson and Aislinn Hamilton led the way with two hits each, while Jessica Erdmann struck out one and walked one in her complete game in the circle for the Lady Jays, who head out for a bright and early visit in the morning today, taking on Scio at 9 a.m.

Andover will look to continue finding the win column on Wednesday, when they pay a visit to the Lady Tigers of Scio in a 5 p.m. first pitch of their own.

Wellsville 19, Hammondsport 4 (F-6)

WELLSVILLE — The Lady Lions continued their suspended contest from the beginning of the month against the Lady Lakers of Hammondsport, Thursday night under the lights of historic Tullar Field.

With a 7-4 lead already in hand before the rain called off the action leading up to the continuation, Wellsville’s ongoing momentum swing carried over with it, as they scored the next 12 runs on an unanswered basis, eclipsing double digits in the fourth inning and never looking back on their 19-4 victory in six innings.

“Both Marissa Ordway and Makenzie Cowburn threw the ball well, and offensively, we did a great job of hitting the ball hard and hitting strikes. Makenzie continues to swing a hard bat.” said Lady Lions coach Matt Burke.

Five different Lady Lions recorded at least a pair of hits at the plate, and as a collective unit, recorded 20 total hits on the attack with Makenzie Cowburn and Lauren Cicirello both leading the way with four hits each, with Cowburn finishing with a 4-for-4 outing that included a triple, and run scored, while Cicirello drove in two runs and scored twice.

Brazen Beckwith blasted her first home run of the season for Wellsville (8-0), posting both runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on her two-run jack to put toward what was a four-RBI night. Marley Adams also tallied four RBI off two hits including a double.

Helping the cause even further were Maddie Spicer and Matti Burke, as they combined for five hits, with Spicer recording three of them, driving in three runs and scoring three runs of her own. In the circle, Ordway’s win held from their original meeting back on May 3, as she finished with eight strikeouts and four walks.

Cowburn added in three strikeouts and one walk in her two innings of relief.

B-R Tournament

Lady Wolverines clinch home tourney title with wins over C-G, A-L

BOLIVAR — For the first time since the 2019 season, and the third time in the last four seasons, the Lady Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg dominated their home tournament, capitalizing on all fronts to capture the title with 15-0 and 18-3 victories over both Canisteo-Greenwood and Allegany-Limestone on Friday.

In game one, it was Jessica Majot that provided the majority of the power for the Lady Wolverines inside the circle, and at the plate, as she held Canisteo-Greenwood to just two hits while handing out nine chairs in her complete game gem. On offense, she recorded a 2-for-4 outing with a solo homer in the team’s four-run fifth inning to bust the game open further.

After battling with the Lady Redskins through two scoreless innings, the Lady Wolverines initially saw the offense come to life with a six-run bottom half of the third inning to put toward what would eventually wind up as a victory to advance into the championship game.

Majot would add a double and score three runs to help lead the bats. Malayna Ayers chipped in with a 3-for-4 outing with a pair of doubles, and two RBI. McKinlee Harris drove in three runs off two hits, while Jianna Nix added in two RBI of her own off two hits.

In game two, the momentum carried over in Bolivar-Richburg’s title-clinching victory over the Lady Gators of Allegany-Limestone, compiling 18 runs on 12 hits to force the 15-run rule after five innings of play.

Malayna Ayers, the tournament’s MVP, picked up the dominant win in the circle, holding the visitors to just four hits by striking out 10 and walking just one in her tossed gem. Ayers also had one of the leading bats, going 2-for-5 with two RBI. The Lady Wolverines recorded a run in every inning to pace the win, including a pair of six-run frames coming in the third, and fifth inning to force the shortened victory against the Lady Gators.

“Our bats came alive again for us tonight, which was really nice to see. The girls have been working hard so far this season, and I think they saw that pay off tonight.” said Lady Wolverines coach Brooke Lovell.

McKinlee Harris added two hits including a double, recording an RBI and three runs scored to help the cause, while Jianna Nix drove in two on a single in the third inning.

Belfast 11, Scio 0

BELFAST — Emma Sullivan put together a gem of a performance for the Lady Bulldogs of Belfast to get back on track Friday night, as the senior ace held visiting Scio at bay with only four hits, striking out 12 Lady Tigers and walking three while the offense took command of an 11-0 home win.

“It was a pretty tight game up to the fifth. Both teams provided great defense, and both teams were putting the bat on the ball,” said Lady Bulldogs coach Mark Sullivan. “Just the defense came through for us, and we just happened to get the runners on base when we needed to. We had the bats to plate them in the end to take care of business.”

Through the first half of the battle, the Lady Bulldogs (4-2) held onto a 2-0 lead over Scio, but the bats found their way to break the game wide open in the bottom of the fifth, gashing open the game with a six-run frame of offense that saw their lead ultimately find double digits, locking up their win in the end.

Mary Hamer had the big bat that made it all happen, providing a two-run double in the team’s massive inning. Kelsi Morton added in a big bat of her own later on in Belfast’s three-run sixth inning, striking while the iron was hot with a two-run single.

On the other side, Scio (0-2) was led by Sophie Bolzan and Camryn Wiech at the plate, recording a triple and double respectively.
