Tuesday Roundup: Friendship scores two 2nd half goals to force 2-2 tie with Scio; Lady Sea Lions move to 5-0 with win at Way-Co
SCIO — In the midst of the gloom that surrounded much of the area on a rainy Tuesday night, Friendship and Scio went to battle for the third and final time after both teams tied their first meeting, and the Lady Golden Eagles taking the victory to wrap up the home-at-home series immediately after.
Through one half of play, the Lady Tigers were in command with a multiple goal lead. But in the second half, Friendship rallied back with two goals of their own which would ultimately lead into a second tie between the teams, as they wrapped up shop after two overtimes in a 2-2 tie.
Scio (0-5-2) got things started near the halfway mark of the opening half with Celina Warboys netting her second of the season, receiving a feed from Lexi Crossley to dribble past multiple Friendship defenders to deliver a high-arcing shot to the net to make it a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Tigers would make it a 2-0 lead at the half with Hailey Windus scoring her first of the season with eight minutes left to go, digging the ball free in front of the net after taking a Brooke Crossley feed from the far corner to put it into the empty side of the cage.
In the second half, the tables turned as the Lady Golden Eagles (1-6-2) found the back of the net in the first 10 minute to cut the deficit in half, as Nevaeh Ross erased the goose egg on the visiting side of the scoreboard by scoring on a direct kick that slipped through the mitts of Scio keeper Sophie Bolzan and into the net.
Later on, Friendship would force the decisive 2-2 tie with one final goal from Ashlyn Golden at the halfway mark, taking the wide open shot in front of the cage and finding the back of the net.
Along with forcing the tie, the Lady Golden Eagles nearly went ahead late in the double overtime period on a penalty kick opportunity, but Bolzan came up clutch with four minutes remaining for the Lady Tigers to keep the game at a standstill until the final buzzer sounded.
When it was all said and done, Friendship would outshoot Scio by a 15-8 count with Bolzan making 13 saves in all for Scio. On the other end, Karlee Cochran and Madeline Lerro combined to make six saves for the Lady Golden Eagles.
Both teams are back on the field Thursday night, as Scio will continue their search for their first victory back on their home field with Andover/Whitesville in town for a 7 p.m. battle, while Friendship continues their road swing into Belfast for a 7 p.m. contest of their own.
Fillmore 7, Hinsdale 0
FILLMORE — The Fillmore Lady Eagles have reached double digit victories on the season, as Mallory DeRock scored two of the team’s seven goals while Shelby Beardsley dished out four more assists to pace the team’s 7-0 shutout of Hinsdale to win their sixth straight Allegany County Division I title outright on Tuesday.
“Mallory had a nice game at our outside mid,” said Lady Eagles coach Jon Beardsley. “Our crosses were making it all the way through, and she was there to finish a couple of them off. Rachel Hatch was playing the other outside mid, and the two are sneaky good players. Tonight, they played a key role. Shelby continues to find open feet, having four more assists. Our whole 24 girl roster got minutes tonight, and the last 20 mintues, Delaney (Hillman) and CeCe (Schmidt) each scored their first Varsity goals.”
DeRock got the goal scoring started for Fillmore (10-0) with her first of two coming just 10 minutes into the game, taking one of four Beardsley feeds into the offensive zone to finish off. They would develop a 3-0 lead at the break with Grace Russell and Hope Russell both scoring back-to-back in six minutes, with Beardsley and Sophia Templeton providing the helpers.
In the second half, Fillmore scored four more goals with DeRock scoring her second of the game 10 minutes in with Beardsley handing off another ball to put toward the goal. Immediately after the kick at center, the Lady Eagles scored again to make it 5-0 with Templeton having the honors off Beardsley’s fourth and final assist.
The scoring was finished off in the last 15 minutes of play, as Delaney Hillman and CeCe Schmidt both scored their first Varsity goals for the hosts in black and green, with Amelia Rose having a hand in their final goal scored by Schmidt with 12 minutes remaining. Both goals came in a three-minute span.
Preslee Miller was credited with the shutout in goal, as she and Lizzy Nugent combined to make five saves in goal, with Nugent stopping all five shots applied. On the other side, Haylee Jozwiak made 17 saves for the Lady Bobcats (2-6-1).
Fillmore will go for 11 in a row back on their home field Thursday night, as they host Cuba-Rushford for a 6 p.m. contest. Hinsdale will return to action after the weekend next week, as they host Andover/Whitesville for a 7 p.m. matchup on Monday.
BOYS SOCCER
Belfast 3, Hinsdale 0
HINSDALE — Like their contest in Friendship just 24 hours ago, the Bulldogs of Belfast got a quick hop to their step over the road again, this time in Hinsdale, as they scored all three of their goals in the first half of play to set the tone, shutting out the host Bobcats with a 3-0 victory on Tuesday.
Matt Weaver led the Belfast (6-2) offense by having a hand in all three goals for the team, collecting a goal while dishing out two assists, including his first on a goal from Stiven Lopez. Weaver would then find the back of the net himself later on off an unassisted basis.
He would help the Bulldogs put the finishing touches on the victory with his final assist coming on Chris Weaver’s second goal of the season.
Stephen Struckmann got the victory in net for the visitors, stopping five shots. On the other end of the field, Ethan Cashimere made 10 saves for the Bobcats (1-3-2).
Belfast will return home for a big Allegany County clash with Houghton Academy, as they do battle at 7 p.m. on Friday, while Hinsdale hits the road tonight to visit Friendship at 5 p.m.
SWIMMING
Wellsville 113.5, Way-Co 68.5
WAYLAND — Through five meets on the season, the Lady Sea Lions continued to show no signs of slowing their dominance in the water down. On Tuesday, they traveled to Wayland-Cohocton and left town still perfect on the season, gathering eight first place finishes to put toward a 113.5-68.5 victory over the host Lady Eagles.
“It was another solid team win from top to bottom. Again, we were able to swim some of the older girls exhibition for times,” said Lady Sea Lions coach Steve Hand. “They know what they have to do, and at this point in their career, they know it’s more about times than points. The younger kids work harder when both times and points are involved. They stepped up and had some personal best times which is great to see. Now we need to work on some little things and keep pushing hard.”
Leading the way in the water for the Lady Sea Lions (5-0) was Tiernee Brandes, who scored four first place finishes altogether between relays and individual victories, with her first coming in running the first leg in Wellsville’s 200 Medley relay victory, alongside Hayden Waldon, Isabelle Hart and Grace Kinnicutt with a medaling time of 2:14.20.
It wasn’t until the back half of the meet when Brandes added her two individual victories, with her first coming in the 100 freestyle, swimming toward a winning 1:04.06 time. Three events later, Brandes added her third win in the 100 backstroke (1:11.49) before rounding off the night racing the third leg in the team’s winning 400 Freestyle relay squad (4:35.65).
Alongside Brandes in the winning 200 Medley relay squad, Kinnicutt would add an individual relay victory herself, swimming toward victory in the 100 butterfly (1:13.05).
Wellsville would go on to score a relay victory in the middle of the meet, with the team of Allie Bidzerkowny, Emily Budinger, Isabelle Hart and Hayden Waldon collaborating to record a 2:01.66 winning time in the 200 Freestyle relay.
Other individual winners for the Lady Sea Lions include: Kaelyn Crawford in the 200 individual medley (2:53.48) and Ellie LaBenne in the 500 freestyle (6:33.67).
The Lady Sea Lions are now off for the next week, as they return home to jump back into the water Tuesday night, where they will welcome in Letchworth for a 6:30 p.m. meet.
