Friday Roundup: After meeting in Cleveland, And/Whi, GV/Belfast boys meet again for Rotary Club Tourney title after 1st round wins; Wellsville boys rebound in road cruising at Midlakes
BELMONT — Nearly a week has passed since Andover/Whitesville and Genesee Valley/Belfast came toe-to-toe to open the 2024-25 campaign on the court in The Land, with a very real possibility that the two teams would once again see each other in just a short amount of time, hanging in the balance.
In order to settle that score, they each would have to maneuver around their first round opponents in the Belmont Rotary Club Tournament, Friday night.
For both teams, all they needed was the opening eight minutes to make their statements, as they each compiled a massive run to set the tone right away and seal their trip to the Championship game the following afternoon, with Genesee Valley/Belfast defeating Alfred-Almond by a 74-25 count, and Andover/Whitesville rolling past Hammondsport next door in the neighboring gym with a 77-38 victory.
On the main stage, Genesee Valley/Belfast (2-0) wasted absolutely no time connecting on everything they rushed into the Alfred-Almond zone for, as the tag team of Ian McKenzie and Ethan Davenport came together to provide 17 of the team’s 19 points within the frame to set up a big 19-2 lead over the Eagles.
From that point on, the hosts continued to gradually extend their advantage over time, spreading the wealth across the next three quarters with multiple scorers finding the scoresheet along the way. Five different Genesee Valley/Belfast shooters all eclipsed the 10-point plateau at the end of the night, with McKenzie leading all scorers behind a game-high 19 points. Brayden Cooper chipped in with 14 points. Lannden Tilton had 13 points, while Davenport and Kenton Shultz each finished with 10.
In the neighboring gym through a set of double doors, Andover/Whitesville (1-1) used a similar start of their own to set the bar immediately against Hammondsport in the first eight minutes, all while holding the Lakers to a single shot from the field in the midst of a 16-2 run — a jaunt paced by both James Miller-Young and Colton Calladine, as the two shooters spliced together 14 of the team’s 16 points in the frame.
Calladine and Miller-Young’s offensive uproar carried into the second quarter for Andover/Whitesville, as they aided a 25-point stand with 18 more combined points, as they put a wrap to a 25-12 run that created even more room to work with, going into the locker room. The game was officially put on ice at the start of the second half when Andover/Whitesville’s offense remained red hot with a 20-3 run of Hammondsport in the third quarter.
“I was very happy with our overall effort tonight. We played a much more fundamentally sound game than what we showed in Cleveland last week,” Andover/Whitesville coach Jimmy Joyce said. “We knew (Henry) Morrison was a great shooter, so we tried to keep him at bay the best we could, and overall I think we did that. We got contributions from every single one of the guys. James stepped up big time down low, our staff had been preaching to him for some time that this kind of game was possible and it should be the norm for him. I’m hopeful it will be a sign of big things to come. Colt, Vinny (Joyce) and Ethan (Warriner) all had very strong games, and that’s nice to have especially with Brody (Vance) going down to injury. Our depth is being tested early on, and we do know it’s going to take an even better effort again tomorrow.”
Calladine led all scorers for Andover/Whitesville with a game-high 23 points, while Miller-Young followed behind with his 18. Vinny Joyce chipped in with 12 more points, while Ethan Warriner had 10 of his own.
Both Andover/Whitesville and Genesee Valley/Belfast will meet again for the Belmont Rotary Club Tournament title this afternoon right back at Genesee Valley at 2 p.m.

Wellsville 72, Midlakes 37
CLIFTON SPRINGS — Wellsville was in for another long bus ride up north on Friday. Looking to shake off as close of a defeat as possible against Geneseo back on Tuesday, the Lions were in full rebound mode against the Midlakes Screaming Eagles, as they manifested a 25-point second quarter to add on top of their first quarter lead, never looking back in the rearview mirror on what was a 72-37 road victory.
“This was more what I was expecting to see with our group,” Lions coach Tom Muska said. “It also helps when you have a kid like Nick G-T come off the bench and hit four big shots from deep. We played with a good energy tonight. I thought our bench came in and kept everything going in the right direction. I’m real proud of the response we came up with after Tuesday’s game.”
The tone was set at an instant by the Lions (1-1) following their early advantage over Midlakes in the first eight minutes, as they fired up a gargantuan 25-11 run, led by 10 second quarter points off the hand of Ty Vogel, to help in closing out the first half on the strongest of notes with a 37-17 lead.
Wellsville would remain in the driver’s seat going forward, seeing more added help come to fruition along the way — including a massive fourth quarter finish from Nick Germain-Tardieu, who wound up serving as the team’s leading scorer at the end of the night, becoming one of four different Lions to eclipse the 10-point threshold behind his game-high 17 points.
Aiden Cowburn was not far behind him with 15 points of his own, while Karson Grover concluded with 10 points for the Lions.
Up next for Wellsville is their annual home opener, which is set to begin Monday night in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off against the Olean Huskies.

Warsaw Tournament
Fillmore 72, Byron-Bergen 38
WARSAW — The first eight minutes of play were put to good use by the Eagles of Fillmore during their road trip to Warsaw to start the campaign on Friday, as they ultimately came, saw and conquered the Byron-Bergen Bees in the opening round of tournament action to claim their spot in the Championship game the following day with a 72-38 victory.
“Byron-Bergen was a little undermanned tonight with a couple of injuries,” Eagles coach Randy Crouch said. “I thought we came out with some first game jitters, but Cam (Mucher) did a great job of getting us going on offense. Jameson (Rhett) and JD (Bialek) had a great game on both ends as well. The game wasn’t pretty itself, and we have a lot to clean up before the Final tomorrow, but it was great to start off this year with a win.”
The first quarter witnessed plenty of noise being made by the Eagles (1-0) right out of the gate against the Bees, with Cam Mucher and JD Bialek helping set the tone early on with a 15-point combination from within the team’s massive 20-8 run to break the ice. Mucher went on to add more damage in the second quarter to keep the momentum in the Eagles’ favor, finishing a perfect 8-for-8 at the line behind five stellar baskets in the midst of his 19-point first half effort.
Mucher would go on to finish with a game-high 21 points for the Eagles.
In the second half, it was Jameson Rhett’s turn to take the reins of the offense, as he unleashed his fury against Byron-Bergen with 16 of his 20 points all coming in the back 16 minutes — 11 of them stemming in the team’s 20-point third quarter, helping them cement their first round victory in a flash.
In addition to their efforts, both Mucher and Rhett provided some outstanding special teams play along the way, with Rhett grabbing seven rebounds and Mucher grabbing six. JD Bialek added more to the scoring behind his 12 points and 15 rebounds off the glass, putting a wrap to his first double-double of the campaign.
Up next for the Eagles is their fight for tournament supremacy back in Warsaw, as they prepare to face the Pavilion Golden Gophers in a 7 p.m. tip-off, this evening.

ACE Tournament at Portville
Cuba-Rushford 53, Bolivar-Richburg 40
PORTVILLE — It was a slow start for both Cuba-Rushford and Bolivar-Richburg through the opening frame of their ACE Tournament battle in Portville, Friday night.
But when the action flipped to the second quarter, one team began to take charge. That being the Rebels, who held the Wolverines in check with a massive run to close out the first half with a lead they never looked back on, as they rolled towards the Championship game the next day with a 53-40 win over their archrival.
“I thought we were pretty rusty to start the first quarter, but once we settled in, we played fairly well,” said Rebels coach Pat Wight. “Bolivar-Richburg was ready to go and we were lucky enough to have a few more shots go in than they did tonight. Donovan Breckenridge had a heck of a second half for us. He’s new to the team and he’s still trying to find his legs, but he looked very good. Finn (Ricketts) did a good job on Landon Barkley. He made him take a lot of tough shots. I’m happy to get the first win and see what we can do tomorrow back here.”
Behind a pair of threes from Landon Barkley in the first eight minutes, it was a moment in time that the Wolverines captured for themselves, as they took advantage of a close 9-8 lead over the Rebels. But the action then shifted gears and towards Cuba-Rushford (1-0) for the remainder of the game, as they went on to outscore Bolivar-Richburg in the remaining three quarters to take the lead — that, including the second quarter, where they assembled their most cohesive stand of offense with a 15-7 half-ending jaunt.
In the second half, Donovan Breckenridge aided in solidifying Cuba-Rushford’s seat in the captain’s chair with an outstanding second half on the attack, scoring 12 of his team-leading 16 points all in the last 16 minutes of play. Carter Brown helped get the Rebels going early on in his 12-point performance, scoring seven of them in the first half alone, including both of his three-point shots. Adam Roe had 11 points to chip in for the offense.
For the Wolverines (0-1), Landon Barkley paced the attack behind a game-high 21 points. Waide Karnuth tallied six points of his own, while Dylan Abdo had four points.
Coming up this afternoon, Bolivar-Richburg will return to Portville to take on the host Panthers in the Consolation round beginning in a 12:30 p.m. tip-off, while Cuba-Rushford squares off with New Life Christian for the tournament’s crown later in the day, at 4 p.m.

West Valley 25, Hinsdale 23
HINSDALE — In a game that came down to the wire in the last two minutes, just one more basket managed to work its way through the twine. On Friday in Hinsdale, that belonged to visiting West Valley, as they jumped ahead of the host Bobcats and held onto their advantage for dear life until the final buzzer to finish up a close 25-23 road victory.
Stats and a complete box score were not made available to report upon publication.
Hinsdale (0-2) hits the road Monday night for a 6 p.m. visit to Alfred-Almond.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
And/Whi, GV/Belfast girls to meet again for Rotary Club title
BELMONT — Prior to the boys nightcaps, the Andover/Whitesville and Genesee Valley/Belfast girls squads claimed occupancy of the two gyms to help open up the Belmont Rotary Club Tournament, as they looked to provide a repeat of last year’s events on Friday.
The name of the game in this particular circumstance was balance, and from beginning to end in their respective battles on the hardwood, both Andover/Whitesville and Genesee Valley/Belfast provided an excellent showing of stability across the board on offense to officially punch their tickets towards a Championship game rematch from a season ago, as Genesee Valley/Belfast took down Romulus with a 41-23 victory, while Andover/Whitesville defeated Honeoye by a 38-13 decision.
For the Genesee Valley/Belfast (1-0) ladies in their first outing of the campaign, it was a red hot first quarter that got their motors running right away, as they put the pedal to the metal on what was a 13-4 run in the opening eight minute sequence — a run that gave them all the cushion they needed to maintain their advantage going forward.
“Overall, I was really happy with our first outing of the season. We are returning only three starters from last year and, of course, have some roles to fill,” said GV/Belfast coach Raegan Ryan. “We want to be very balanced in our approach to the floor and I thought each of our players did a great job tonight of doing their part. I’ve said to the team that their part is whatever the team needs out of them on any given night. We had girls really embrace rebounding effort, providing defensive pressure, leadership, scoring and so on. It was great to see them share the basketball tonight. There’s a lot to build off of, too.”
In the midst of a balanced offensive outing, Bayleigh Tallman went on to lead all scorers for the hosts with a game-high 14 points. Sophie Zillgitt chipped in with nine points, while Jenna Hill and Ava Aronson each had six points.
As for the Andover/Whitesville (2-0) ladies, they took care of business themselves with their first half defense setting the tone, allowing just two shots from the field by Honeoye. In return, the visitors in black went on to claim a 15-5 halftime lead before the third quarter witnessed five different scorers aid them in swinging for the fences with an insurmountable 12-3 run to pull away from the Lady Bulldogs for good.
Pacing the balanced offensive outing for Andover/Whitesville was Stella Bledsoe, who recorded 11 game-high points. Olivia Waters pitched in with nine points of her own, while Graci Lewis-Ellison and Reece Winters each bucketed seven points.
Both Andover/Whitesville and Genesee Valley/Belfast will meet for the Belmont Rotary Club title this afternoon right back at Genesee Valley, beginning at 12 p.m.

Jack Bush Tournament at Cowanesque Valley
Wellsville 46, North Penn-Mansfield 26
WESTFIELD, PA — Game one of the young campaign for the Lady Lions of Wellsville was no problem on Friday. In their annual trip to the Jack Bush Tournament at Cowanesque Valley, they capitalized on two strong ends to each half to speed past their first round adversary, North Penn-Mansfield, and into the championship game with a 46-26 victory.
“It was a good first game out tonight. Being in Pennsylvania, where there is no shot clock and they have different rules than us, I thought we were able to start out pretty well aside from that,” said Lady Lions coach Michelle Alvord. “Makenna (Dunbar) and Natalie (Adams) led us tonight, and Alexa (Hennessy) put out one of the best games I’ve seen her play between last year and up to now. She brought a little bit of everything to the table. Jaden (Dunbar) had the task of keeping their leading scorer held up. She only scored eight points, so that was a big plus as well.”
The Lady Lions (1-0) established their presence immediately in the first half following a narrow lead through the first eight minutes of play, as they controlled both ends of the floor to punctuate a scoreless 8-0 run of North Penn-Mansfield to close out the first half with a strong 16-4 lead. Although their opposition fired right back in the third quarter with their best stand of offense in the contest, the Wellsville defense locked up the victory once and for all with another dynamic run — a 15-4 fourth quarter jaunt to pull away permanently.
Helping lead the way was Makenna Dunbar, who had 15 game-high points to pair with six rebounds. Natalie Adams had 12 points to go with three boards and three steals, while Jaden Dunbar finished with eight points. Adding more special teams help was Alexa Hennessy, who had four rebounds.
Prior to the Varsity contest, Hailey Cowburn’s team-high eight points aided the Wellsville JV girls squad in clinching a tournament title game themselves, rolling to a 33-13 win over North Penn-Mansfield. They will go on to play Northern Potter at 4 p.m. for the title.
As for the Varsity Lady Lions, they will go on to capture Jack Bush Championship glory once again this evening, as they face either Northern Potter or host Cowanesque Valley in a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.

ACE Tournament at Portville
Portville 49, Cuba-Rushford 38
PORTVILLE — Elongating across a vast majority of the evening, Cuba-Rushford and Portville engaged in a dogfight that came down to the last eight minutes of play.
The Lady Rebels did everything in their power to remain within a stone’s throw of the Lady Panthers down the stretch, but the Section VI reps saved their best stand of offense for last, as they pulled away and towards what ultimately shaped into a 49-38 win in opening round action of their ACE Tournament.
“This was a fight, especially over the first three quarters. They hit some really big shots early in the fourth quarter and it started to shift the momentum,” said Lady Rebels coach Aaron Wight. “Kendall (Tompkins) gave us some huge minutes off the bench when we got into foul trouble, so that helped us stay in it. Coach (Inga) Welty has a great program in Portville, so I really have to be proud of our girls for giving them a fight like that tonight.”
The Lady Rebels (2-1) and the Lady Panthers each traded a first half run, with the hosts claiming the early lead through the first quarter before the visitors came right back to cut their deficit down to a single possession going into halftime. In the second half, the two teams continued to deliver back-and-forth blows, which allowed Cuba-Rushford to tie the game at 31 behind the efforts of Lily Tompkins and Brynn Lavery, who combined to record 10 of their 12 points within the frame.
But the momentum was soon seized by the Lady Panthers once and for all in the last eight minute quarter, as they froze the Lady Rebels in their tracks in the midst of what was a game-turning 18-7 run behind the efforts of five different Portville scorers, including Emily Rhinehart and her nine fourth quarter points.
Despite the defeat, Cuba-Rushford witnessed a dynamic evening come to fruition for Brynn Lavery, who knocked down five of the team’s six three-pointers on her way towards a game-high 18-point performance. Tompkins finished with 11 points, while Lilly Farwell had five points to add in.
The Lady Rebels are back in Portville this morning at 11 a.m. to take on the Ellicottville Lady Eagles in the Consolation round of the ACE Tournament.

Canisteo-Greenwood 55, Caledonia-Mumford 34
CANISTEO — Canisteo-Greenwood received the best of both worlds in a colossal battle with Caledonia-Mumford on a cold Friday night in the Canisteo Valley, as the offense burned down the house from three-point range while the defense buckled down and held the Lady Raiders in check to help evaporate their first quarter lead, finishing off what was a huge 55-34 victory.
Both offenses were red hot right out of the gate, with the three-point game getting involved early, as Caledonia-Mumford and Canisteo-Greenwood unleashed six combined triples to construct what was a 17-13 first quarter lead that leaned in favor of the Lady Raiders. Then, the Lady Chargers took it to a completely different level.
Across the next three quarters of play, the hosts in white and red held Caledonia-Mumford to no more than six points while the offense continued to capitalize on all fronts to provide a strong finish to the first half with the lead before extending it insurmountably behind five big three-pointers in a 15-point third quarter.
When it was all said and done, the Lady Chargers (2-0) lit the twine on fire behind 14 total three-pointers out of their 20 total team field goals made.
Bailey Mullen and Paris May each bucketed a quartet of them, with Mullen leading all scorers with her game-high 16 points, grabbing 13 rebounds to finish off her double-double along with six steals. May finished with 14 points, while Harlie McCaffery powered the special teams cause with nine additional boards off the glass.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL
Arkport-Canaseraga 3, Fillmore 0
FILLMORE — The Arkport-Canaseraga Wolves took advantage of the opportunity right out of the gate, setting the tone in their latest road trip on Friday to Fillmore, where they brought out the brooms and set up shop for a straight-set victory over the host Eagles with a 25-11, 25-16, 25-16 win.
Paving the way towards Arkport-Canaseraga’s third straight win to open the campaign was Drew Glover, who had an excellent night from the back line with seven aces and a pair of kills. Curtis Hartman followed with five more aces of his own to go with two kills, while Aydan Button handed out four assists in addition to his four aces and one kill.
Fillmore (0-1) was led by Skylar Freeman and his six service points and one kill. Anderson Wiltsey scored six service points of his own while handing out six assists.
