Thursday Roundup: Sea Lions send out Seniors in style with dominant win over Dansville in final home meet of season; No. 3 Fillmore girls tennis downed by No. 2 A-P in B2 Semifinals

WELLSVILLE — Senior Night is always one of those tough nights to endure. Even more so when your Seniors have also provided major contributions from within a program that has climbed the Section V mountaintop for the last four years running.

For Morgan Mattison, Kaylee Oswald, Jasmine Outman and Megan Vanetten, they have swam not only their very last home meet of the year, but the very last regular season meet of their esteemed and glorified Wellsville Sea Lion careers in front a jam-packed crowd, Thursday night.

There was only one way for the meet to go — up. With visiting Dansville in town, the Sea Lions would not go anywhere else but up, as they advanced forward and claimed seven total first place finishes, including a complete sweep of all five events in the opening half to set the tone on the Lady Mustangs immediately, as the team sent their four senior captains out in style with a regular season-concluding 78-51 win.

“This was a good meet for the seniors. The younger girls spent Wednesday night decorating the pool for the Pink Pumpkin Project and Senior Night. This meet felt like the emotions ran high, and it’s a meet where I don’t think it would matter if we won or lost. It’s about the seniors and all their hard-work over the years getting to swim in their pool one last time,” Sea Lions coach Steve Hand said.

Wellsville totaled seven first place finishes to lead the charge against Dansville, with five different individuals all working to claim victories in their respective events. The winners include Reegan Perkins in the 200 freestyle (2:23.0), Megan Vanetten in the 200 individual medley (2:48.9), Lily Miller in the 50 freestyle (30.5), Morgan Mattison off the Diving board (160.20) and Makenna Cooke in the 100 butterfly (1:32.0).

The Sea Lions would also collect a winning 200 medley relay event victory from all four of their seniors to start off the night, as the team of Vanetten, Oswald, Mattison and Outman all scored a 2:17.8 first place finish for the team.

Hand spoke about his team’s performances, noting that “Jasmine got a Sectional cut in the backstroke, Megan swam events she normally does not swim in and did a great job with both. Kaylee tried a new dive and was very successful. There are eight individual swimming events and one diving event. It is a hard accomplishment to get all eight events, but Kaylee has done that all three years in a row. Tonight, Morgan joined that select few and got the Diving portion done. Learning six new dives in less than a week with help from Kaylee. It was really awesome to watch the Seniors and the younger girls work together.”

Scoring wins for Dansville were Haidyn Scollon (100 freestyle), Nevaeh Levasseur (100 backstroke) and Samara Wolf-Mailky (100 breaststroke), pairing them with a victorious 200 freestyle relay win.

For an in-depth look at the results, they are posted below.

The Sea Lions regular season campaign is now over, as they wrap up their 2024 campaign with a record of 5-1-1. The team will now begin their wait for Sectionals, with a trip to the Livingston County League Championship meet in Bath upon the horizon next weekend, beginning with Diving next Thursday in a 5 p.m. start, before the big dance next Saturday morning.

BOYS SOCCER

Andover/Whitesville 3, Cuba-Rushford 2

ANDOVER — After the girls team sent their seniors out in style, it was the Andover/Whitesville boys’ turn to attempt the same on a frigid Thursday night in Andover. Ahead of them was a Cuba-Rushford team beginning to pick up a momentous burst of steam after finding the win column in their last four games.

One way to do that is capitalize on a fast start. In the first 10 minutes of play, Andover/Whitesville made their presence known to Cuba-Rushford, as they fired the engines full boar to deliver three goals in a span of five minutes to set the tone on the Rebels, scoring a 3-0 lead that they never lost going forward, as Andover/Whitesville sent their seniors out swinging with a 3-2 Senior Night victory in Andover.

“Brody (Vance), Colton (Calladine) and Trey (Kent) dominated with chances,” said Andover/Whitesville coach Cody Borden. “My keeper Skylar (Orpet) tracked the ball really well tonight as well. I don’t call him out as much as I should, but he, along with all four of my back defenders played textbook defense minus a couple of miscues in the field. But, we have started to trend in the right direction.”

Andover/Whitesville (7-5-2) made all of their noise in the first 10 minutes of the opening half, taking a 3-0 lead instantly against the Rebels, with their first score coming nearly four minutes in from Brody Vance off a pass dished along by Colton Calladine. Calladine would then find the back of the net himself, along with Trey Kent just 47 seconds apart, with Kent assisting on Calladine’s marker, while Vance recorded a helper himself on Kent’s score.

The lead would hold firmly intact until the pressure was mounted by Cuba-Rushford (7-5-1) late in the second half, when Brock Stadler delivered their first score to cut the deficit down to a pair before Hunter Cassidy trimmed it all the way down to one with 2:33 left in the game. But in the end, the Andover/Whitesville would hold their advantage in place to clean house.

In the shots department, Andover/Whitesville went on to claim a 10-8 advantage over Cuba-Rushford, with Skyler Orpet making five saves., while Caleb Elliott made five saves for the Rebels.

Andover/Whitesville will hit the road for a visit to Friendship/Scio beginning at 5 p.m. on Tuesday in Friendship, while Cuba-Rushford prepares for a 7 p.m. battle at Allegany-Limestone.

Genesee Valley/Belfast 2, Bolivar-Richburg 1 (F-OT)

BELMONT — For the second time in four games, Evan Turybury was the hero for Genesee Valley/Belfast. On Thursday, they were forced to extra time after a late first half lead was abruptly squandered by the visiting Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg, who ultimately forced overtime with a crucial deadlock sitting idle on the scoreboard.

With time ticking down in the first extra session, Turybury went on to put matters into his own hands with a breakaway opportunity that he did not miss whatsoever, as Genesee Valley/Belfast overcame the adversity and came through the clutch to hand-deliver a 2-1 walk-off victory in overtime over the Wolverines to close out their final match at home in the regular season.

The scoring did not commence until the very late stages of battle in the first half, when Genesee Valley/Belfast (12-1-1) knocked away a big opportunity directly in front of the Bolivar-Richburg goal. With an initial shot ricocheting straight off the crossbar, it would become available for Callahan Tallman to body directly into the empty side of the cage to put the hosts on top with a 1-0 lead going into halftime.

The two teams settled in for another tough battle across the second half, leading up to Bolivar-Richburg’s (3-10-1) game-tying goal with 2:30 left to play in regulation, as Ryder Iantorno became the last Wolverine to touch the ball in the midst of a massive scrum directly in front of Genesee Valley/Belfast’s cage, as the ball took a fortuitous redirection past Zach Thomas in goal and to the back of the net.

The deadlock nearly elapsed through the first overtime, but Turybury came to the rescue one more time on a ball that was booted directly downfield, landing into the possession of Ryan Snyder who delivered a pass ahead to Turybury on the breakaway. After carving the Wolverines defense right down the middle, Wolverines keeper Ayden Music came out for a challenge on the ball, but was stymied by Turybury, who went on to knock home the game-winning goal into an empty net to claim another strong win for the hosts.

The pair of goals for Genesee Valley/Belfast stemmed off a 16-shot output, as they wrapped up with a 16-3 advantage over Bolivar-Richburg. In net, Thomas recorded the win behind two saves, while Music made 14 saves for the Wolverines.

Both teams will re-emerge onto the playing surface on Wednesday, with Genesee Valley/Belfast paying a visit to Wellsville in a 7 p.m. contest, while Bolivar-Richburg heads back home to welcome in Fillmore at 5 p.m.

Fillmore 7, Friendship/Scio 0

FILLMORE — The tone was set immediately in the opening half of play for the Eagles of Fillmore, as they utilized a first half hat trick put away by Isaiah Sisson, who went on to finish with four of the team’s seven total goals against visiting Friendship/Scio to help perform a big bounce back into the win column on Thursday with a 7-0 shutout.

“We were about to rebound in a big way tonight after a string of tough losses,” Eagles coach Jarrett Vosburg said. “Isaiah Sisson was a motor for us in the first half tonight, securing the hat trick before halftime and adding a fourth goal and an assist in the second half. It was also nice to see some new faces on the scoresheet in the second half with Connor Nendza, Ryan Vedder and Ezra Knapp getting the games’ remaining goals.”

The seven goals for the Eagles (6-4-3) were collected off 16 total shots applied against Friendship/Scio, with their first from Sisson ringing in just over six minutes off the clock in the first half. Sisson received assists from James Hillman, Braylon Hatch and Carson Sanasith along the way to help the hosts off to a 3-0 lead going into the break.

Sisson would go on to finish off his nine-point night of offense with his hand in the first two second half goals for Fillmore, handing off an assist to Connor Nendza before scoring his fourth marker off a helper from Brayden Walton in just a 19-second span in the early stages to extend their lead. Ryan Vedder and Ezra Knapp rounded off the scoring later on for the Eagles, with Sanasith issuing a helper on Vedder’s marker.

In goal, Brayden Hennard stopped all three shots he faced for the Eagles to record the shutout. On the other side, Cooper Greenman made nine saves for Friendship/Scio (0-14).

Both teams will return to action on Wednesday, with Fillmore paying a 5 p.m. visit to Bolivar-RIchburg, while Friendship/Scio heads back home to Scio to host Andover/Whitesville in a 6 p.m. contest.
