Wednesday Roundup: GV/Belfast ladies roll behind Turybury’s 1st career Varsity marker, 2 goals by Tallman in 4-0 blank of Lady Lions; Fri/Scio girls win in OT at And/Whi, Fillmore floors it past B-R
WELLSVILLE — Scoring your first career Varsity marker is a pretty special moment.
Aside from winning Sectionals or eclipsing a certain mark in your career, this one brings a completely different arrangement of emotion to the table. It is a unique consequence that when it does happen, you most certainly will not forget it. Ever.
This particular circumstance that harbors such magnitude arose on Wednesday inside the Lion’s Den, with Genesee Valley/Belfast clinging to a two-goal lead against the host Lady Lions, who kept their application of pressure at a high level across the second half. Through it all, the visitors were rummaging for a gigantic momentum shift to keep their composure in the driver’s seat.
Along came Makenzie Turybury.
With Wellsville looking to turn the tide themselves, the Genesee Valley/Belfast freshman was ready for anything to come her way. With Bayleigh Tallman already navigating her way onto the board twice and Hannah Southwick-Powers scoring once herself in between, Turybury added the team’s final goal — the very first of her Varsity career, as her teammates jubilantly swarmed her, and their cheering section erupting in pandemonium with nearly 10 minutes remaining to cement what was a 4-0 victory over the Lady Lions.
“Makenzie is a youngster and has worked so hard to improve her skills. She does all off-season skill-building and has grown to have great field awareness. Tonight, it was a perfect run on a perfect pass for a perfect finish. It was scripted well,” said GV/Belfast co-coach Lisa Scott-Schneider. “It was her first of many to come. She will only improve with strength and maturation. I’m really glad she moved up this year to play some quality ladies and leadership.”
Before Genesee Valley/Belfast (5-1-1) ended the night on the most positive of notes, they jumped the gun bright and early with a rapid 2-0 lead on Wellsville in the first 10 minutes of play, with Bayleigh Tallman breaking the ice off a throw-in, as she collected possession and performed a long dribble straight to the Lady Lions net to sneak it past goalkeeper Lydia Kaye just five minutes removed.
Nearly four minutes later, Genesee Valley/Belfast proceeded to double their lead on the hosts in black and orange after a heroic effort to keep possession alive by Madison Yackeren. A moment later, Southwick-Powers assumed control and then at the most difficult of angles adjacent to the Wellsville net, cannoning a shot that took a hard redirection off of Kaye in front and into the far side of the cage.
The advantage was significant, and it was one they did not squander, as the Lady Lions (3-5) did everything in their power to trim it, clamping down on defense to keep the Genesee Valley/Belfast offense frozen while providing chances of their own. Perhaps their best opportunity stemmed with 10 minutes left in the half behind a brilliant run to the net from Ayla Faulkner, as she shifted a pass across for a finishing touch in front, but the shot ultimately squibbed just wide of the near post.
The momentum shift for the Lady Lions progressed into the second half with another fine opportunity to strike, with another rush led by Faulkner seeing the ball squirt free from the grasp of Morgan Yackeren in goal for Genesee Valley/Belfast. In the midst of finishing what would have been a deficit-cutting score, the play was called back on a penalty inside the box against Wellsville, which would allow the visitors to clear the zone.
Genesee Valley/Belfast would take full advantage of the opportunity themselves with Tallman’s second goal of the game later on, as she used a boisterous amount of fancy footwork on her run up the far sideline, finessing past three different defenders on her way in on goal for a shot application that was met with a couple of saves by Kaye to put the Wellsville defense on their feet.
A short time later, Tallman would eventually find the back of the net by scurrying off on a breakaway following the interception a throw-in from the sideline to the 30-yard line, making the full b-line sprint while beating out a streaking Kaye right in front of her to add the first of two pieces of second half insurance at the 22:32 mark.
The Genesee Valley/Belfast offense would remain upbeat and composed to deliver their final strike of the contest — a memorable one for Turybury, which was set up off the collection of another turnover on a Wellsville throw-in by Southwick-Powers, as she beat out a pair of defenders next to her to deliver an absolutely saucy pass to her right-hand side for Turybury, who split the Lady Lions defense on her way in to knock the score home underneath Kaye for a 4-0 lead with 13:10 remaining.
The four goals for the visitors came off 12 total shots applied against the Lady Lions, as they went on to claim a 12-5 advantage in the shots department.
“We are very proud of our game tonight. There was a lot of great work and perseverance, and this was a game that we needed to grow tonight and have a complete game of soccer,” Scott-Schneider said. “We’ve lost or tied two games with a lead at the half, and the ladies responded by holding the Wellsville storm, adding a couple of insurance goals along the way. Morgan (Yackeren) had a quality second game in goal for us, she really held up the defense in front of her.”
Yackeren, in her second start between the posts for Genesee Valley/Belfast, recorded the shutout by making all five stops she faced. On the other side, Kaye went on to make eight saves for Wellsville.
Both teams will return to action Friday night, with Genesee Valley/Belfast playing host to Jasper-Troupsburg at 7 p.m. on the confines of Judy Bliven Field in Belmont, while Wellsville hits the road for a 5 p.m. visit to Dunsmore-Latimer Field to take on Bolivar-Richburg.
Friendship/Scio 1, Andover/Whitesville 0 (F-OT)
ANDOVER — Fall was in full force Wednesday, as the temperature dipped and the wind engulfed. The gusts played a contributing factor in the limitation of offensive production between both Friendship/Scio and Andover/Whitesville, as both teams battled tooth and nail across all 80 minutes of regulation without a score on the board.
It’s a position both teams have been in at least once already this year, but when it came down to it, a familiar face emerged to win the game. In the end, it was Jordyn Nickerson who proceeded to do just that nearly halfway into the opening overtime session, as she gave Friendship/Scio the victory — a 1-0 decision in Andover.
“Friendship/Scio deserves a lot of credit tonight,” Andover/Whitesville co-coach Aaron Rawady said. “They earned that win and were just better in all facets of the game. Hopefully, we will respond accordingly and have a couple of strong practices before our road trip this weekend.”
Nickerson’s marker came with 6:23 remaining on the clock, as she made her solo rush towards the Andover/Whitesville net and knocked it past keeper Olivia Waters to clinch the second overtime victory for Friendship/Scio (3-5) this season. The goal came off seven shots, with Waters making six saves for the hosts.
On the other end, the win belonged to Avery Lamberson, who set aside all seven shots she faced from Andover/Whitesville (2-6) to record the shutout in goal.
Friendship/Scio will aim to keep their winning ways going on Tuesday in a 6 p.m. visit to Alfred-Almond, while Andover/Whitesville looks to regroup in a 2:30 p.m. visit up north to Perry on Saturday.
Fillmore 5, Bolivar-Richburg 0
FILLMORE — The defending Class D State Finalists have been tested since the beginning of the season, and through every challenge they have accepted, they have emerged unscathed. On Wednesday, the result was no different once again, as they witnessed four different scorers find the back of the net against Bolivar-Richburg to set up shop for a seventh straight win — a 5-0 decision over the visiting Lady Wolverines.
“I was proud of how the girls stuck with the game-plan. It took us a bit to execute properly, but our energy and execution improved as the game wore on,” Lady Eagles coach Jon Beardsley said. “Bolivar-Richburg battled tough and marked up well. Our movement off the ball, communication and our possession was better as the game wore on. This group’s ceiling is higher than they realize and that is understandable for a youthful team. Sometimes, they don’t think they are achieving to a certain level, but ultimately it is about our progression and improvement.”
Beardsley continued on his team, noting that “I think every moment for this team right now is like the final sprint, and they put a lot of pressure on themselves. We are growing and realizing it is a marathon, and we’re going to experience some highs and lows. To be 7-0 on the season really speaks highly of this group of girls.”
A 1-0 lead for the Lady Eagles (7-0) was formulated across the first 40 minutes of play, as they broke the ice behind a strong marker from Morghyn Ross, who delivered home the strike off a pass from Kallie Pastorius. The defense would hold the Lady Wolverines still along the way, as they maintained momentum going into the second half.
In the back half of action, Fillmore proceeded to crank the thermostat all the way up to bolster their lead insurmountably, as they went on to score four second half goals against the Lady Wolverines (2-5) — all of which came in a 13-minute span, with Mylee Miller scoring a pair of unassisted markers at the 54th and 65th minutes, while Pastorius added one of her own in between off a pass from Miller at the midway mark of the frame.
Tenlee Miller finished off the scoring for the hosts in green at the 67th minute, 120 seconds removed from Mylee’s second score of the game, putting the finishing touches on a pass from Ryleigh Goodliff. The five goals supplied by Fillmore were recorded off 16 shots against Bolivar-Richburg, as they went on to secure a 16-2 shot advantage.
In goal, the shutout win belonged to Grace Clark, who made both saves.
As for Bolivar-Richburg, Rylee Whiting and Maya Zilker split time in between the posts, combining to record 11 saves. The Lady Wolverines will look to rebound back home to Dunsmore-Latimer Field on Friday, hosting the Wellsville Lady Lions in a 5 p.m. contest.
Fillmore will now look to keep their red hot start going, as they prepare for Homecoming festivities with a titanic showdown of undefeateds with the Cuba-Rushford Lady Rebels at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
