Monday Roundup: Ark-Can unleashes 32-point 2nd quarter behind Carey’s hot hand, build 60-35 road win over And/Whi; GV/Belfast ladies gut out tough 35-29 win over C-R, B-R volleyball collects 1st win

ANDOVER — Just over a month ago from within the Reilly Center at St. Bonaventure, it was the Wolves of Arkport-Canaseraga that came away victorious in a game of a lifetime against Andover/Whitesville.

Now on Monday, it was the second and final time the two foes would meet. But this time, the ball was in Andover/Whitesville’s court on their home floor. An opportunity to show the red hot Wolves how far they’ve come since that last meeting back in early December.

Through the first quarter, Andover/Whitesville overcame a fast start from the Wolves to climb within reach going into the next frame of play. But in that next session, a complete flip of the script was performed.

Arkport-Canaseraga fired on all cylinders.

From start to finish, the Wolves assembled a quarter of all quarters to use against Andover/Whitesville. Led by the hot hand of Caden Carey from the parking lot outside of the school in Andover, they howled ever so loudly with a 32-point frame, branching what was a seven-point lead into an insurmountable advantage heading into the halftime break, as they galloped towards victory by a 60-35 count to complete the two-game season sweep.

There was some early trouble for both teams to knock shots down in the first three minutes of play, with the first crack into the ice waiting to be applied. But Arkport-Canaseraga was able to find their rhythm with the game’s first opening by the count of 12 straight points to open the scoring, led by a duo of triples — one each from Caden Carey and Devin Moran, along with some additional help from Ibra Ford at the charity stripe along the way.

Andover/Whitesville (7-7) was able to claw their way back under two minutes left in the frame, as a long three of their own from Jake Mattison allowed them to score the next five straight to climb back to within reach of the Wolves at the end of the first quarter.

But in that second quarter, it was the Caden Carey show. The three-point game of the Wolves blossomed to life — another avenue of attack that was spearheaded by the freshman, who had six triples in the quarter altogether to pave the way at the top of the key to jet-fuel what was a 32-8 half-ending run of Andover/Whitesville to put massive emphasis on an advantage they would ultimately never look back on.

Carey would finish with a game-high 30 points for the Wolves to go with seven rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Adding more assistance for Arkport-Canaseraga was Ibra Ford and his 16 points, while Devin Moran had 10 points. For Andover/Whitesville, Vinny Joyce led the way with his team-high 14 points. The Wolves will return to action back home in Canaseraga tonight with a 7:15 p.m. tip-off against Hammondsport.

A complete box score was not made available to report upon publication.

Andover/Whitesville will look to regroup back on the floor tonight with a 7:30 p.m. visit to Scio to take on host Friendship/Scio.

Mount Morris 71, Houghton Academy 47

MOUNT MORRIS — Propelled by a mighty first quarter start Monday night on their home floor, the Mount Morris Blue Devils set the table for a brilliant start to their week against visiting Houghton Academy. Behind a tremendous offensive balance up and down the floor, the defending Class D2 champions raced their way towards victory by a 71-47 count.

Mount Morris ripped and roared with strong presences on both ends of the floor, setting up shop with a 27-point first quarter that was jet-fueled by Chase Young’s efforts, posting 14 of his team-leading 20 points from within the frame to give the start they wanted to have in their back pocket.

Despite falling behind by a 27-7 count after the opening quarter, the Panthers (5-6) continued to chip away at the Blue Devils as much as they could, using four second quarter triples — three of them off the hand of Josh Davidson, to aid in assembling one of their strongest spurts of offense in the game.

Davidson would finish as Houghton Academy’s leading scorer, as well as the game itself, posting a game-high 21 points.

Although the Panthers were able to spring their attack to life to close out the first half, an even stronger finish provided by the Blue Devils added more fuel to their first half fire, as they claimed a 47-22 lead that they would never relinquish in the time ahead, securing the victory when the final buzzer rung out.

Following behind Davidson for the Panthers was James Adenuga, who chipped in with 13 points. Jack Prentice had 10 points to add in.

Houghton Academy will continue their road swing Wednesday night for a 7:30 p.m. visit to Hinsdale.

WELLSVILLE — The first quarter was where the Lady Lions of Wellsville made their mark, Monday night against visiting Bolivar-Richburg.

Looking to build off one of their most complete performances at Canisteo-Greenwood, they advanced forward and strung together a tone-setting jaunt across the opening eight minutes and never looked back, as they rolled towards their 10th win of the campaign with a 64-23 win over the Lady Wolverines.

After both teams traded a pair of baskets on each side to begin the contest, the balance of power would shift in Wellsville’s (10-5) favor for the remainder of the session, all while capitalizing on all fronts to score 12 unanswered points to claim a 16-4 lead at the quarter’s conclusion. No momentum was lost for the Lady Lions entering the second, as they picked up where they left off to deliver another strong run of their opposition to branch their advantage insurmountably to maintain firm control of the action.

The Lady Lions saw every single scorer find the basket in some way on the attack. Amongst them, three different shooters eclipsing at least 10 points, with Makenna Dunbar and her game-high 13 points propelling the team. Following closely behind was Natalie Adams and Averee Palmatier, each recording 12 points, with Adams adding in six steals and five assists, while Palmatier recorded five steals to ignite the special teams cause along the way.

Adding more fuel to the fire on special teams was Alexa Hennessy, grabbing six rebounds and handing out four helpers.

For the Lady Wolverines (4-9), Carmen Crowley led the way with her nine points. Raegan Giardini chipped in with seven points of her own. Bolivar-Richburg will return to their home court Wednesday night for a 7:30 p.m. visit from Cuba-Rushford.

Genesee Valley/Belfast 35, Cuba-Rushford 29

BELFAST — The victories that take a lot of guts and gumption are usually the kind of victories that taste even sweeter when the night is through. Across a battle where the shots came at a premium across all four quarters, Cuba-Rushford and Genesee Valley/Belfast had to dig in deep to deliver the goods Monday night in Belfast.

After a run that helped end the first half on a high note for Genesee Valley/Belfast, the Lady Rebels fought their way back to turn the heat up on their opposition behind a fourth quarter three-point game. But in the end, time would ultimately run out on Cuba-Rushford’s comeback, as Genesee Valley/Belfast managed to hang on for dear life to claim a hard-fought 35-29 home win to open the week.

“Wins are hard to come by in January and I’m proud of the girls for finding a way tonight,” said GV/Belfast coach Raegan Ryan. “It was a very slow start for both teams. I thought we did a good job just gutting out a win. It wasn’t our best shooting night and at times, we were a little careless with the ball. They did a good job regrouping and refocusing when we needed to.”

The first quarter produced just 11 points combined between the two teams, with Genesee Valley/Belfast (11-3) grabbing the upper-hand with a 6-5 lead, holding the Lady Rebels to a pair of shots from the field. That would serve as a big burst of momentum going into the second quarter, where they were able to hit their rhythm on all chords with a 12-3 run behind Mary Hamer’s emergence on the floor, scoring nine of her game-high 16 points within the frame.

With an 18-8 lead at the break, the hosts donning white aimed to continue building down the homestretch, garnering a lead as big as 13 going into the fourth quarter. But the Lady Rebels (4-11) would attempt to turn the tables on Genesee Valley/Belfast, as they outscored them by a 13-6 margin to close the gap behind two massive triples off the hands of Aubrey Williams, as well as a 3-for-3 outing at the stripe from Brynn Lavery to further the team’s aid.

But when the end of the night approached, Genesee Valley/Belfast would manage to hang on for the victory.

Finishing behind Hamer’s 16-point night was Sophie Zillgitt, who helped power an excellent first half of play for Genesee Valley/Belfast with her eight points. Abby Sullivan chipped in with five points. For the Lady Rebels, Williams led all scorers with nine points — all off three triples. Lavery finished with eight points, while Shae Maples had five.

Both teams are back on the floor Wednesday night in a pair of 7:30 p.m. contests, with Genesee Valley/Belfast heading north to the Jungle in Belmont to play host to Fillmore in a big County League battle, while Cuba-Rushford heads over the road once more to visit Bolivar-Richburg.

All eight scorers were able to find their way to the basket against visiting Arkport-Canaseraga, with Mattie McCumiskey and Hope Russell taking charge of another well-balanced attack for the Lady Eagles to assist in a 62-27 victory — their sixth in a row, over the Lady Wolves inside The Rock.

“We’re getting great contributions from all eight girls out there. Tonight, we had 25 points off our bench with Mattie’s 16 leading the way. I thought Grace (Russell) had a very strong game tonight as well. She knocks on the door of a triple-double almost every night, and she really knows how to get our offense going.” said Lady Eagles coach Tom Parks.
