Tuesday Roundup: Lady Wolverines celebrate Senior Night in style with sweep over Port Allegany, GV/Belfast; Dunbar tosses no-no, smacks grand slam in 12-0 Lions win over Way-Co

RICHBURG/BELFAST — The Lady Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg saw five of their Seniors play one final regular season home game in front of a packed crowd in Richburg, as the team closed the book on the first of two chapters on the season Tuesday night against Port Allegany for Senior Night.

All five of the outgoing Seniors were honored by their head coach, Brooke Lovell before the game got underway, introducing them one by one with their families. The last to have her moment? – Perhaps the team's catalyst not only on defense, but at the plate: Jessica Majot.

Turns out, it would be a pretty memorable Senior Night for the Lady Wolverines captain in the circle.

Majot, like she has been all season long for the team, was absolutely sublime and overpowering pitching the softball in the team’s first of two games to close out their regular season, as she kept the visiting Lady Gators at a complete standstill while the offense bolted out of the gate mightily with a lead that was never threatened, rolling onwards toward a 19-0 no-hit blank to send their Seniors out in the best way possible.

“This was a special group of Seniors. They were the first group of athletes I coached here at Bolivar-Richburg. I will definitely miss them so much next season,” said Lovell. “It was awesome to see them all contribute for their big night. I'm proud of Jess for throwing a no-hitter in her last regular season game at home. She continues to work hard to better herself, and also becoming a great role model for her teammates.”

The Bolivar-Richburg hurler was unstoppable from within the circle to lead the defense, as she held the Lady Gators without a single hit across all five innings, striking out eight and walking just one to record her eighth win in the circle this season.

On offense – a well-balanced attack, as the team scored 19 runs off nine total hits at the plate, capitalizing on multiple errors by the Port Allegany defense while the bats plugged away beginning in the second, after the Lady Wolverines very quickly took a 1-0 lead in their first at-bats.

In the second inning after a couple runs score with the bases loaded the first of three consecutive times for Bolivar-Richburg, Malayna Ayers and Maddy Thornton went back-to-back with a pair of two-run belts, with Ayers blasting a double into the outfield, helping break the game open even more with the first of two seven-run frames.

That would ultimately set the tone the remainder of the way, as the Lady Wolverines scored 11 more runs, including another seven-run spark plug in the third to crack 15 runs in the game to lead towards the win in five innings.

Thornton, along with Kayli Giardini, were Bolivar-Richburg's leading hitters, each scoring a pair. Madigan Harris chipped in with three RBI along with her sister, McKinlee.

The night for the Lady Wolverines wasn't quite over just yet. The bus would pull right up next to the softball field to take the team elsewhere – a season-ending battle under the chilly lights in Belfast, where they took on host Genesee Valley/Belfast in the capper.

The field in Belfast was also a place where Majot just so happened to remember something that happened right from the very beginning of her softball career. A moment that Majot and Lovell both talked and joked about before the game – her first career home run.

The possibility of ending a stellar regular season career where it first began with one swing of the stick? How could you possibly write a better script than that?

With Genesee Valley/Belfast creeping ever so closely to Bolivar-Richburg coming down the homestretch, Majot would deliver with that one swing of the bat, driving a deep ball to the outfield that sailed into the dark skies and over the fence, extending the Lady Wolverines lead insurmountably with a three-run blast to secure a 6-4 victory over the Lady JagDogs to officially put a wrap to their regular season slate.

“Being able to get two back-to-back wins tonight was of incredible importance, especially now that we're beginning to make the move into Sectional time. We want to continue to progress, and with these, we hope that we can peak at the right time.” said Lovell.

Not only did Majot change the game with the swing of her bat, but she was a single away from completing a Senior Night cycle, as she went 3-for-4 with her three-run bomb, a triple and double to help pace a Bolivar-Richburg (17-1) offense that recorded six runs off nine total hits at the plate.

The team would strike while the iron was hot right away during their first at-bats with a 3-0 lead. From that point, the game now laid upon the shoulders of the opposing pitchers – Malayna Ayers and Hannah Southwick-Powers, who both delivered impeccable showings from within their circles.

Genesee Valley/Belfast's (7-10) offense would manage to find a crack from within the Lady Wolverines defense in the bottom of the fourth, cutting their deficit down to one with two big runs coming in to score.

But the damage would soon be done in the visiting half of the fifth, as Majot delivered an absolute bomb to the outfield, providing a devastating blow towards the Lady JagDogs with her three-run shot — her eighth of the season to branch their lead out to 6-2.

A lead that was bent, but never broken in the last two innings to remain in front until the end.

“Majot killed us tonight with that homer, and she had a brilliant night at the plate overall for them,” GV/Belfast coach Mark Sullivan said. “We battled back and we played them tough the whole game. We played them 5-2 the first game, and 6-4 this time around. We can play with anyone with the quality of play we're playing with now. Bolivar doesn't hurt themselves either, they're a solid team all around. We can play with a ton of confidence, and it goes back to that game with Friendship. They're a great gorup of girls and they keep working hard. That's all you can ask for out of them.”

In the duel on the mound, the win was given to Ayers for the Lady Wolverines, as she handed out 12 strikeouts to pair with a couple of walks in addition to recording a double on offense. On the other side, Southwick-Powers countered with a stellar outing of her own, as the freshman handed out nine chairs and walked one in her complete game for the Lady JagDogs.

At the plate for the hosts in red, Brooke Middaugh tallied two of the team's six total hits, including a double. The Lady JagDogs will close out their regular season tonight over the road, visiting Whitesville for a 5 p.m. first pitch against host Andover/Whitesville.

The regular season is now over for the Lady Wolverines, as they await Sectional seeding in the Class C3 field with a record of 17-1 overall.

BASEBALL

Wellsville 12, Wayland-Cohocton 0 (F-6)

WAYLAND — For much of the season, the Wellsville Lions have been without one of their top go-tos not only at the plate, but even more so, a pivotal and vital puzzle piece to their pitching rotation in Logan Dunbar.

As of late, he made his grand return to the lineup at perhaps the best time to help the Lions make a run just in time for Sectionals right around the corner.

On Tuesday in one of their last road trips of the regular season, the Wellsville junior provided a performance that he's waited a long time for, to deliver for his team.

During their visit to Wayland-Cohocton, Dunbar provided the best of both worlds, overcoming a slow start on the mound to deliver perhaps the most dominant performance of the season, one that would provide a massive spark for his bat, ending the game after six innings with a grand slam through the trees in the outfield, as Wellsville sealed a 12-0 shutout over the host Eagles.

“He was absolutely dominant. It was a phenomenal performance from Logan. He started slow with his first three pitches being balls, but he came back with nine straight strikes to strike out the side,” said Lions coach Tom Delahunt. “He never looked back after that, and he slammed the door shut with a grand slam into the trees. I feel so good for him because he's had to sit on the shelf for most of the season, and he wasn't sure when he was going to be able to come back. I wasn't sure how much he was going to pitch because we haven't worked him into our rotation fully, but for him to give us this, it was a huge lift. It couldn't have come at a better time.”

Dunbar had a hand in all three of the offense's biggest innings for the Lions (10-8), beginning right from the start with an RBI off a hit to the left side that helped them set up a four-run opening session to automatically set the bar for Wayland-Cohocton to match.

In turn defensively, Dunbar went straight to work delivering strikeouts left and right, as he bounced back after a slow start by striking out the side to get the team off the field in a hurry.

After a scoreless second inning between the two clubs, Dunbar's bat would come to life again as he helped branch out the Wellsville lead to six behind an RBI double that he would poke into the outfield to score a run.

Little by little, the visitors in gray and orange would continue to add to their lead for the remainder of the game, including one last four-run inning coming in the sixth to force an early finish to the contest. With the bases loaded, all it took was one swing as Dunbar blasted an absolute bomb into the outfield and through the trees, unloading all of the bags with his massive grand slam to seal the game.

While in the midst of his six-RBI night on offense, Dunbar would toss a no-hit performance for the Lions on the rubber, handing out 15 chairs and walking just one.

Helping the cause on offense were three different Lions accounting for at least a pair of hits at the plate, as Jere Havens, Ty Vogel and Trenton Green all had two hits, with Havens recording a double and scoring twice, Vogel scoring three times and Green driving in a run.

Cody Costello and Cooper Brockway rounded off the bats with a single each.

Wellsville's road swing will continue tonight with a 5 p.m. visit to Livonia.

“The nice thing is that we have every other pitcher ready to go to finish out the season. We're going to give Livonia our best, and hopefully we can come up with a sweep.” said Delahunt.

Wellsville 402 114 – 12 10 0

Way-Co 000 000 – 0 0 5

WLSV – Logan Dunbar (WP) (CG, 15K, BB), and Alex Green.

Bolivar-Richburg 14, Port Allegany 4 (F-5)

BOLIVAR — The offense for the Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg hit all of their strides during their annual Senior Night celebration on Tuesday. After visiting Port Allegany was able to garner an early lead, the bats came alive soon after with a six-run third inning that set the tone for what came to be a 14-4 home win in five innings over the Gators.

“It was a great night for all seven of our Seniors. This was a great way to send them out. We had some really solid hitting up and down the lineup to make this happen, and we had some great defense behind Landon (Danaher) to back him up.” said Wolverines coach Dustin Allen.

Six different Wolverines (17-1) all tallied at least a pair of hits at the plate to power up a magnificent night of offense in a game that saw them trail early to the Gators after two complete innings by a 2-1 count. The bats came alive a short time later in the home half of the third, as they recorded a six-run stand to take the lead away for good.

With a 7-2 lead to work with, the Wolverines would account for seven of the game's last nine runs, including a three-spot in the bottom of the fifth to force an early end to the contest to officially send their Seniors out in style.

Aydin Sisson led the bats for the hosts in black and red with two hits and three RBI. Cam MacDonell and Ethan Childs each had two hits and drove in two RBI, while Trey Buchholz had two hits of his own and scored three times. Rounding off was Landon Danaher and Caden Allen, who both had two hits, including a triple from Danaher.

On the mound, the win belonged to Danaher who went the distance, fanning five and walking four.

Bolivar-Richburg will wrap up their Allegany County League slate back on the road tonight with a 7 p.m. contest against Genesee Valley/Belfast under the lights, in Belfast.

Port Allegany 110 02 – 4 7 3

Bolivar-Richburg 106 43 – 14 14 0

PA – Drew Evens (LP) (2K, BB), Ty Guilds (2) (2K, 2BB), Jake Causer (5) (BB), and Blaine Moses.

B-R – Landon Danaher (WP) (CG, 5K, 4BB), and Ethan Childs.

Alfred-Almond 2, Andover/Whitesville 1 (F-8)

ANDOVER — It was quite the fierce battle on display in Andover. Both host Andover/Whitesville and the Eagles of Alfred-Almond locked horns in a defensive battle that began from start to finish. As a result, one extra inning of baseball was needed to decide the outcome.

In a 1-1 deadlock, it was broken by Alfred-Almond with a clutch run in the top of the eighth, scoring it off special teams to jump ahead of Andover/Whitesville to cap off a 2-1 victory on Tuesday.

“It was a pitcher's duel the whole way. Layton (Miller) and Nolan (Tormey) both pitched a heck of game against one another,” said Andover/Whitesville co-coach Jake Bannerman. “We just made two errors at bad times. We had their first runner out at second but we dropped a throwdown. And then we didn't help our cause with two outs and their go-ahead runner on third. We just couldn't hold on when it mattered most.”

Both pitchers held one another at bay across the first four innings of play before Andover/Whitesville (3-13) was the first to break open the game in the bottom of the fifth with some timely hitting from Colton Calladine, who led off with a base hit into the outfield.

He would ultimately work his way around the bases and land 90 feet away as the potential game-breaking run. Landon Cook scored the hit to bring him in to score, knocking a ground ball into play to get the team off and running.

Not long after however, Alfred-Almond got on the board themselves in the visiting half of the sixth, tying the game up at one to force extra innings.

Just one additional session of baseball was needed, and it was finished off by the Eagles and their pitcher in Nolan Tormey, who provided the go-ahead RBI to score their final run to take back the lead from Andover/Whitesville for good, securing the narrow edge.

Andover/Whitesville accounted for just four hits at the plate behind a stellar eight-inning tenure from Layton Miller, as he handed out 10 chairs to pair with two walks.

Andover/Whitesville is back on their home field tonight in Andover for another 6 p.m. battle slated against the Cuba-Rushford Rebels.

Alfred-Almond 000 001 01 – 2 5 1

Hinsdale’s Miller, Fillmore’s Cockle & Wiltsey, B-R’s Robinson make Individual Sectional cut

RUSHFORD — With weather pushing the Section V Individual Qualifier to the next day due to inclement weather, the time to determine who plays for a Sectional title would finally come on a gorgeous and cool Tuesday afternoon at Allegheny Hills in Rushford.

14 participants all gathered for an afternoon on the links, but only the top four would clinch spots in this weekend's Section V Individual Tournament for the chance to bring home a coveted patch. At the end of the day through all 18 holes, Allegany County will send Hinsdale's Caden Miller, Fillmore's Anderson Wiltsey and Reid Cockle, and Bolivar-Richburg's Gauge Robinson to the big dance.

Miller was the qualifier's top golfer for the Bobcats, as he fired the match-low round of 104 to take the honor, garnering an All-Star nod along the way. Miller’s teammate, Parker Keenan, has been named an alternate for the Individual Tournament.

Following behind was both Wiltsey and Cockle for Eagles, as they each recorded rounds of 113 and 114 for head coach Tom Parks who says that both golfers have shown a tremendous amount of growth over the course of the season.

“We had a nice day for the qualifier. It was a little cool, but the course was in nice shape,” he said. “I'm proud that two of our players will represent Fillmore at Individuals. Anderson has spent a lot of time at the course this year outside of our organized practices, and he played a consistent match with no disastrous holes. This is Reid's first year of golf, and for him to show the amount of growth that he has had, it has culminated into qualifying for Sectionals.”

Robinson would follow with the final top score to make the Sectional cut for the Wolverines, shooting a round of 116.

In addition to the top four golfers, eight golfers were also named as All-Stars this season, as Maddox Day (Bolivar-Richburg), Sebastian Saulter (Cuba-Rushford), Will Roeske (Fillmore), Haley Hall (Fillmore), Addy Herring (Genesee Valley/Belfast), Chris Weaver (Genesee Valley/Belfast), and Parker Keenan (Hinsdale) all received nods.

Starting Saturday afternoon, the County's four best golfers will head for the Clifton Springs Country Club, northeast of Canandaigua, to compete for an Individual Sectional title.

TRACK

Wellsville sweeps regular season-ending quad-meet at Hornell

HORNELL — It was the final hurrah for the Wellsville Lions track team on Tuesday, and it was one that they ended the regular season on in the brightest of ways.

After a strong finish in the Top 5 this past weekend at Spring Day, the Lions took that big boost of confidence and momentum, and applied it to their road trip to Hornell, as they coasted towards a sweep of the meet against Fillmore, Friendship/Scio and the host Red Raiders with multiple secondary finishes leading the charge.

On the boys side, the Lions would score 80 points overall, seven more than second place Hornell to claim victory. The team would collect five individual victories to go with two relay wins, with Noah Joslyn leading from the track with his pair of wins coming in the 800 sprint and 1600 run.

From the field, John Layfield and Grady Ball would help provide a sweep of both throwing events, with Layfield taking the top distance in the shot put, while Ball delivered the longest distance on the discus. Additionally, Eli Brophy added a top win in the 3200 run while Wellsville collected relay wins in the 1600 and 3200 relays.

As for the Lady Lions, they saw Alyssa Dorrough come up with their only two victories individually to power up a first place finish led by multiple secondary finishes in their 94-point triumph to complete the meet sweep. Dorrough laid claim to both throwing events with the winning distances in the shot put and discus.

Like the boys team, they too would also record a pair of relay wins, both coming in the 400 and 1600 relays respectively.

Hornell would place second overall behind the Lions in both aspects, with the boys recording 73 total points to pair with their seven first place finishes, three of them from Brennan Delany who provided them in the 110 hurdles, high jump and triple jump, while Ramsey Dean-Prince had two more himself to chip in, scoring wins in the 100 dash and 400 sprint.

Rounding off the individual wins was Jake Phillips, who hurdled his way to a top finish in the 400 hurdles. Hornell would also add a 400 relay victory into the mix. As for the Lady Red Raiders, Selena Maldonado and Elaina Flaitz led an incredible day at the top of the team's mountain, combining to score seven of the team's nine total first place finishes to power their 76-point conclusion.

Maldonado would lead the team with four victories, two in each division, garnering them in the 100 dash, 400 sprint, long jump and triple jump, while Flaitz furthered the team's cause with her three triumphs coming in the 200 dash, 400 hurdles and high jump. Rounding off the victories were Alexis Patrick and Myah Burns, as they chipped in with wins in the 800 sprint and 400 hurdles, respectively.

The Friendship/Scio boys would place third overall with 37 points, led by a pair of first place finishes from Jordan White, who placed tops in the 200 dash and in the long jump. As for the ladies, they would finish fourth overall with nine points.

The Fillmore boys placed fourth overall, a mere three points behind Friendship/Scio, with 34 total points. The Lady Eagles followed with a 51-point third place finish led by just three top finishes, one from Rachel Hatch who recorded the winning time in the 100 hurdles, and the last individual placing coming from Ava Sylvester in the 1500 run.

The team itself would go on to record a 3200 relay victory along the way.
