Friday Roundup: B-R boys play spoiler with 1st half control, but GV/Belfast bounces back to secure clutch 2-1 win; Wellsville, GV/Belfast girls secure shutout wins; Lady Lions tennis tested by A-P
BOLIVAR — The first 40 minutes was time well spent for the Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg, Friday night.
They worked furiously to garner every single advantage they could against undefeated Genesee Valley/Belfast. With control of possession for most of the frame, the Wolverines were able to connect with a goal from it, carrying a first half lead into the halftime break.
But in the case of the visiting team at Dunsmore-Latimer Field, they were hunting for a momentum shifter. And fast.
Fortunately enough, Genesee Valley/Belfast came to party in the second half, as they ran the table close to the midway mark of the frame, as they scored back-to-back goals in just over four minutes to take what was a 1-0 deficit and flip it upside down in favor of a 2-1 victory when the final chapter was written at the end of the night, remaining undefeated with their fifth straight win.
Braden Zilker had the game’s first response approaching the 10-minute mark for the Wolverines (1-7-1), as he broke the ice in a massive way to earn a 1-0 lead off his score that originated off a pass sent along by Landon Barkley. The goal was one of six total shots Bolivar-Richburg applied against Genesee Valley/Belfast.
As for the visitors, the defense would hold firm following the goal by the hosts, as they kept the one-goal deficit within striking distance. With the offense continuing to boil heading into the second half, Genesee Valley/Belfast (7-0-1) went on to flip the script at an instant, as Sal Gambino and Evan Turybury both went back-to-back in 4:46 to change the complexion of the game completely, giving them the 2-1 lead going forward for good, as their second half comeback efforts ultimately prevailed at the final horn.
The two late goals in the second half stemmed off a 15-shot out put Genesee Valley/Belfast issued against the Wolverines. In goal, Zach Thomas put a stop to five shots he faced to score the win. On the other side, Ayden Music made 13 saves for the hosts.
Both teams are back at it Monday night in a pair of 5 p.m. contests, with Genesee Valley/Belfast hitting the road for a visit at Houghton Academy, while Bolivar-Richburg pays a visit to Cuba-Rushford.

BELMONT — 48 hours shelved after a dynamic performance on the road in Wellsville, there was simply no slowing the Genesee Valley/Belfast ladies down when they returned to the pitch to close out their week. In their latest road trip up north to Hammondsport, they were taken the distance by the host Lady Lakers in a back-and-forth trade of sets all across the evening. That included a decisive fifth set that extended even further beyond regulation play.
But when it was all said and done, the Lady Panthers buckled in and remained composed, as they collected the two necessary points they needed to end the match on their own terms, warding off a brilliant challenge from Hammondsport to claim the five-set win by a 17-25, 25-18, 25-12, 22-25, 16-14 count.
