Monday Roundup: Fri/Scio’s Ross dominant vs. Portville, fans 20 in 1-hit twirl to score 2-0 win; Wellsville’s Green belts grand slam in win over Hornell; Fillmore, GV/Belfast golf stay unbeaten

SCIO — With rain putting a damper to their high-octane and fierce first round clash with Genesee Valley/Belfast during Midseason Tournament action this past weekend, Friendship/Scio looked to pick up right where they left off with another formidable foe traveling to town for a visit on Monday.

That being Section VI superpower Portville — winners of seven of their first eight games, as they look to put a grinding halt to Friendship/Scio’s hot streak. But while under complete command during her time in the circle, Nevaeh Ross would not allow that to happen. Instead, she would proceed to shell out a dynamic and dominant one-hit shutout of the Lady Panthers, fanning 20 batters altogether — a season-high for the senior phenom, while the offense came alive down the stretch to set up the 2-0 win in Scio.

It was a defensive war across all seven innings of play, as both Portville and Friendship/Scio assembled just six hits in the game. Five of those would belong to the hosts in white and gold to build momentum off of Ross’ overpowering outing in the circle, as the senior recorded 12 straight strikeouts to set the music on the dance floor.

In return, Friendship/Scio’s (8-2) came alive in the bottom of the fourth inning with some clutch ice-breaking. Following a run reaching on a throwing error by the Portville defense, Morghyn Ross would deliver the fissure-inducing strike on a double to deep left field that took a hit against the fence.

Ross would ultimately land on third before remaining there after Portville fielded two straight bunts to close out the frame. With the first run now hovering within their subdivision of the scoreboard, Friendship/Scio looked to add more damage with Cece Davenport and Nevaeh Ross reaching off back-to-back errors by the Portville defense with two outs. The Lady Panthers were able to work their way off after an excellent catch by Madison Ford at third base to snare a line drive off the bat of Avery Lamberson.

In the top of the sixth inning, Portville picked up their first hit of the game off a base hit straight up the middle. But the Lady Panthers offense would remain still with Ross handing out back-to-back strikeouts to leave the runner on base.

The final burst of momentum would shift to Friendship/Scio’s bats one more time to produce a gargantuan piece of insurance off excellent baserunning from Morghyn Ross. After a throw to the plate following a sacrifice fly from Jadyn Wonderling to catch her off-guard went errant and wide, she would score easily to make it a 2-0 lead before her older sister put the exclamation point on the victory with her final 1-2-3 of Portville — two of those outs consisting of her 19th and 20th strikeouts of the game.

Nora Thompson would add in a hit to aid Friendship/Scio’s offense.

Up next, Friendship/Scio will search for their eighth straight win, as they welcome in Andover/Whitesville for a 5 p.m. contest in Scio tonight, if weather permits.

Lady Wolverines smash hits in game 1, break tie in game 2 to sweep C-R

RICHBURG — While both Cuba-Rushford and Bolivar-Richburg baseball teams were doing battle all through the night down the road in Bolivar, the softball teams took center stage at Stan Harris Field in Richburg to hold their end of Monday night’s doubleheader bargain dominating the two towns to start the week.

With the Wolverines taking both games away from their opposition on the diamond, the Lady Wolverines would follow up with two wins of their own against the Lady Rebels, as they used the dynamic combination of 20 hits across both games, pairing it alongside two stellar outings from Rylee Whiting in the circle to keep Cuba-Rushford at bay in recording the 4-0 and 6-3 victories to sweep the night’s action.

In game one of the pair, it was under the command of Whiting from start to finish, holding Cuba-Rushford to just a single hit — a lead-off single in the top of the third inning from Katelyn Radomski, while handing out eight strikeouts and one walk. While the Bolivar-Richburg sophomore was finding every groove possible from within her quarters on the field, the bats produced an 11-run tremor at the plate in return, led by Whiting’s RBI-double helping break the first inning ice.

The two foes would trade scoreless exchanges leading up to the next two frames, beginning in the bottom of the fourth when a two-out single blasted by Jayna Thomas — one of four hits she would lead the Lady Wolverines with, aided in doubling their lead on the Lady Rebels. Danika Loucks would add some more assistance into the fray just an inning later, scoring two off a big single to close out the scoring.

Whiting, Loucks and Sommer Beckwith all posted two hits to charge and electrify the Lady Wolverines offense.

The Lady Rebels were led by Sydney Howard on the mound, going the first five innings while accumulating four strikeouts and a walk.

In game two, both teams stood on level playing ground across the first inning, as each traded two-run barbs. The Lady Wolverines (6-7) kicked it off with another RBI single from Whiting helping pave the way first in the top half of the inning, while some key baserunning sparked the Lady Rebels to score two in return to tie the game.

Across the next three innings of play, both teams would mesh together just two hits at the plate, as both Lizzie Kocsis and Rylee Whiting both kept full composure of their destiny within the circle leading into the top of the fifth inning. Bolivar-Richburg would ultimately take the lead away from Cuba-Rushford’s (4-6) grasp, starting a strand of three unanswered runs to pull out on top.

Following an Emma Sisson RBI single in the fifth to permit the lead, the Lady Wolverines added onto it with three more in the sixth behind an RBI double from Whiting, along with a putout into the right side of the infield and a Lady Rebels error plating a run each to conclude the scoring. Cuba-Rushford would attempt to climb their way back in the bottom half with an RBI single from Gianna Loiacono allowing them to trim the deficit to three.

But a quick 1-2-3 stand in the seventh inning by the team in black and red allowed them to keep their lead firmly intact to sweep both games.

The Lady Wolverines posted six runs off nine hits, with Thomas leading the way with three more, including a double and two runs scored. Whiting and Cassidy Stives each finished with two hits, and combined for three RBI. On the mound, Whiting garnered her second complete game victory, fanning nine while holding the Lady Rebels to just three hits.

As for Cuba-Rushford, Kocsis went the first four innings by fanning three and walking six. She, along with Jordyn Radomski, would each record a hit to go along with Loiacono’s late RBI single in the sixth.

Both teams will return to the field Thursday night in a pair of 5 p.m. first pitches, with Bolivar-Richburg heading to Whitesville to face Andover/Whitesville, while Cuba-Rushford heads back home to welcome in red hot Friendship/Scio.

BASEBALL

Wellsville 15, Hornell 3 (F-5)

WELLSVILLE — To convey that the Lions of Wellsville have been smacking the ball left and right, would be declared a massive understatement.

Across their torrid and extraordinary 12-1 campaign leading into Monday night’s renewal of their historic rivalry with Hornell, the lineup one through nine has found a way to deliver each and every time. Among those hitters was Alex Green, who might perhaps be a five-alarm fire, scouring 10 hits across the last three games for the Lions to ignite his boomstick at the plate.

When the night reached its conclusion, the Wellsville senior morphed into a towering inferno behind his perfect 4-for-4 outing at the plate. One that saw two doubles and a fourth inning grand slam come to complete fruition, totaling five RBI in the contest and scoring three runs himself to jet the Lions towards a 15-3 five-inning win over the visiting Red Raiders.

“I’d be afraid to go after Alex because he is smoking hot. He deserves everything that he’s earned here,” Lions coach Tom Delahunt said. “He’s such a hard worker and he’s a really coachable kid. He’s our leader and to see him with the success he’s had so far this year, I couldn’t imagine it happening to a nicer and more hard-working young man. Alex has battled through a lot, and he doesn’t let the setbacks get him down. He does everything he can do to get on that field and play the game he loves to play.”

Before the Lions (13-1) were able to get their pistons firing on all cylinders, they had to work their way from behind after their early 1-0 lead against Hornell evaporated in the top of the third with all three of their runs — two of them incepting from a single by Charlie Oyer to pull the Red Raiders ahead with a 3-1 lead.

But the advantage Hornell was able to garner from Wellsville was short-lived, as the Lions tripled down on their response in the following half of action with a nine-run bonanza, taking a two-run deficit and flipping it upside down on the Red Raiders with a commanding 10-3 lead going to the fourth inning.

In the midst of some dynamic relief efforts staged by Cooper Brockway in the fourth inning, the Lions would syphon that defensive energy and put it to good use to help finish off their win over their longtime rivals, as they posted five more runs — four off the bat of Green, who went yard to deep left center field with his grand slam.

The 15 runs authored by the Lions were recorded off 16 hits at the plate, with Green’s 4-for-4 outing leading the charge. Following up was Brockway, who had a perfect 3-for-3 himself, driving in three runs and scoring once. Ty Vogel garnered three hits including a double, and scored two runs, while Karson Grover had two hits, also including a double, driving in two and scoring twice himself.

“We crushed the ball tonight and we found all the gaps. They weren’t seeing-eye singles, we had six doubles and a grand slam against Hornell,” said Delahunt. “We’re seeing it really well and putting some great swings together to hit the ball everywhere. That’s through the entire lineup. If one kid doesn’t hit the ball, another one will. It’s really fun to watch all of this take place. The game was still within reach when Hornell took the lead, and when Cooper shut their rally down, we fed off of that in the third.”

On the mound, Brockway put the stamp on the victory in relief with three strikeouts. As for Hornell on the mound, Wyatt Evingham went into the fourth inning during his start, fanning three. At the plate, Andrew Davis and Brayden Vaughn each had a hit.

The Lions will now await their two seniors and their arrival home from Senior Trip festivities this upcoming weekend in Boston, as they host Senior Night next Monday night in the Lion’s Den against Cuba-Rushford, beginning at 5 p.m.

Wolverines double down with two shutouts of Rebels

BOLIVAR — Trey Buchholz and Landon Barkley turned in two magnificent performances for the Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg, Monday night. The two aces bombarded the plate with chairs across all 14 innings of action with Cuba-Rushford, handing out 20 of them combined to keep the Rebels on their feet to set up back-to-back shutouts to witness their ascension over the 10-win mark of their campaign.

With game one serving as the final contest in Bolivar-Richburg’s tournament, it was one that the Wolverines started rather quickly, scoring all nine of their runs in the first three innings of play while riding the coattails of Trey Buchholz from start to finish. Buchholz would hold Cuba-Rushford to just three hits across 11 strikeouts and two walks during his complete game gem in their 9-0 shutout.

As for the bats, they came alive with some key special teams play igniting an early two-run lead before letting them loose in the bottom of the second, posting a four-run stanza to help break the game open with more room to work. Following another shutout inning conducted by the defense behind Buchholz in the third, the scoring was finished off within a three-run stanza headlined by a solo shot off the bat of Landon Barkley.

The Wolverines recorded nine runs off seven hits, with seven different Wolverines all recording one, including Barkley. Caden Allen chipped in with a double, while Buchholz, Waide Karnuth, Charles Militello, Maddox Davison and Brayden Zilker all recorded one. Aydin Sisson accounted for two RBI.

For the Rebels, Landen and Hayden Schappacher, along with Dean Frank, recorded one hit. On the mound, Eli Sleggs went the first four innings, fanning two and walking four.

To wrap up the night under the lights, the ball was then handed to Barkley to finish off the Monday with a bang, holding Cuba-Rushford to five hits across a nine-strikeout, one-walk gem of his own to claim a 6-0 blank.

“The pitching was excellent once again,” said Wolverines coach Dustin Allen. “Trey and Landon both threw nice games for us. We had some key hits when we needed them the most, and the defense came up with some great plays. It was one of those games where all of the things went our way.”

Just like the kickoff contest, the Wolverines (11-1) honed in on another quick start out of the gate, scoring half of their runs in the first two innings of play — two of them right in the top half of the opening frame, laying the foundation down for an early 3-0 lead of the Rebels.

The defense would shell out a couple of scoreless frames before Bolivar-Richburg went back to work again on offense to build onto their lead, posting another two-run stanza to continue pushing their advantage out insurmountably to keep the Rebels (4-6) in the rearview mirror. The scoring would conclude with their final run in the top of the seventh.

The six runs stemmed off seven total hits at the plate, with Tavyn MacDonell captaining the efforts with his 2-for-4 outing that included a double and RBI. Caden Allen recorded a triple and drove in a run, while Reiss Gaines and Aydin Sisson each had a hit and RBI. Trey Buchholz also tallied a hit.

Cuba-Rushford handed the ball to Braxton Clark for the game two start, as he went two innings behind two strikeouts and two walks. Clark was also one of five different Rebels to record a hit, as Finn Ricketts, Adam Roe, Adam Shaffer and Hayden Schappacher all had one to pitch forward to help the cause.

Both teams will return to the diamond Wednesday night, with the Wolverines heading to Andover for a 6 p.m. first pitch against Andover/Whitesville, while the Rebels continue their road swing up north to Fillmore for a 5 p.m. visit with the host Eagles.

Fillmore 12, Hinsdale 2 (F-5)

HINSDALE — There were plenty of plays that the Eagles of Fillmore encapsulated across their highlight reel to open the week in Hinsdale on Monday. One of them that stood out before them all: A first inning blast off the bat of Damon Potter that showed no signs of coming back, as he helped the Eagles offense set the tone in what was a 12-2 five-inning win over the host Bobcats.

With a runner standing on third during the middle of Fillmore’s (6-3) icebreaking stand on offense, Potter would help bring the hammer down with a shot that sailed high into left center field, exiting play and onto the highway behind it for a two-run homer to pick up the lead. The Eagles offense showed no signs of slowing down, as they added four more runs to their lead in the second to create a six-run cushion on Hinsdale.

The Bobcats (1-5) were able to cut the deficit down to four with some offense of their own coming in the bottom of the third, scoring a pair of runs. But despite their lead being trimmed down, the Eagles would remain out front permanently with the game’s final six runs — five of them in the top of the fourth inning to aid in finishing off their victory.

Fillmore scored 12 runs off eight hits at the plate, with James Hillman and his 3-for-4 outing leading the way. To pair with Potter’s two-run homer in the first, Jack Boon dished out a triple.

On the mound, it was a pair of freshmen Eagles that guided the defense from start to finish, as the duo of Connor McCumiskey and Malcolm Nusbickle combined to hold Hinsdale to just three hits, with McCumiskey’s five strikeouts and three walks garnering the victory in his first career Varsity start. Nusbickle followed with four strikeouts and a walk during his tenure in relief.

As for Hinsdale, Jake Elliott fanned four and walked eight during his four-inning start on the bump. At the plate, Henry Schwartz recorded two of the team’s three hits.

Both teams will have quick turnarounds tonight in a pair of 5 p.m. first pitches, weather permitting, with Fillmore hosting a big showdown with the Arkport-Canaseraga Wolves, while Hinsdale stays put at home to welcome in Alfred-Almond.
