Thursday Roundup: Wellsville track dominant in return back home, gallop towards meet-sweep of B-R, Fillmore behind strong performances; B-R softball stays hot, belts 21 hits in 15-0 blank of And/Whi

WELLSVILLE — The sun was out. The sky featured a clear blue sky with no clouds to be seen. Long story short, it was as perfect of a Thursday night to enjoy the great outdoors.

For the Wellsville track team, they would embrace every moment and every challenge their meet alongside Bolivar-Richburg and Fillmore would present in strong fashion, navigating their way towards a sweep against both the Wolverines and Eagles on Thursday.

For the boys squad in their 110-27 and 125-13 wins over Fillmore and Bolivar-Richburg respectively, the Lions collected first place finishes in almost every single event on display, with Xavier Scott, Ayden Faulkner, Kamron Dodge and Grady Ball all recording at least a pair of top finishes to go with the team’s complete sweep of all three relay events along the way.

Faulkner was the team’s top finisher with three medaling performances, garnering his wins in the 400 sprint, long jump and triple jump. Scott added in his two wins on the track, scoring winning times in the 100 dash and 110 hurdles. Dodge performed a long-distance sweep on the track with his triumphant times in the 1600 and 3200 runs, while Ball brought out the brooms in both throwing events, garnering winning distances in both the shot put and discus.

Other individual winners for the Lions include Evan Billings in the 200 dash, Noah Joslyn in the 800 sprint, JT Mariotti in the 400 hurdles and Brayden Riley in the pole vault.

As for the Lady Lions, they followed a similar path themselves, as they posted 11 total first place finishes to go with a pair of top relay finishes in the 400 and 3200. Kaylee Oswald would lead the way for the team in their 102-28 and 107-24 wins over Fillmore and Bolivar-Richburg with the team’s second sweep in both throwing events, taking the wins in the shot put and discus. On the track, Ella Green and Sam Bidzerkowny performanced a long-distance sweep themselves with wins in the 1500 and 3000 runs.

Other individual winners include Edahlia Sebastian in the 100 dash, Kylie Ackerman in the 400 sprint, Talia O’Connor in the 400 hurdles, Brooklyn Dahlgren in the high jump and Addy Clark in the pole vault.

Fillmore would place second overall with 59-40 and 46.5-43.5 victories over the Wolverines for both the boys and girls squads. On the boys squad, only one first place finish was recorded. That being from Ray Muzaid-Omar, who had the winning height in the high jump. As for the Lady Eagles, they garnered two first place finishes from Rachel Hatch, as she medaled in the 200 dash and 100 hurdles.

The Wolverines were paced by three first place finishes by their girls team, two from the field by Ryleigh Kemp and Carmen Crowley, as the two competitors swept both events in the sand bunker with winning distances in the long jump and triple jump each. From the track, Raegan Giardini added a 800 sprint victory.

If weather permits, Wellsville and Bolivar-Richburg will both make their way to Bath-Haverling for Invitational action beginning this evening, while Fillmore hits the road again for a visit to Genesee Valley/Belfast on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

BASEBALL

Fillmore 15, Genesee Valley/Belfast 5 (F-5)

BELMONT — Although Genesee Valley/Belfast was able to respond to the answers that the Eagles of Fillmore dealt out, the door was broken down by the defending Class D champions in the top of the third, where they were able to take a two-run lead and morph it into nine runs across the next two innings, peeling away and out of reach to pick up their seventh win in eight games by a 15-5 count after five innings.

The tone was set almost immediately by the Eagles (7-1) with their first three runs of the game coming on one single swing at the plate. That was provided by one of the team’s biggest bats in the lineup, Brent Zubikowski, who obliterated a three-run shot to deep left field, garnering just enough distance to make its way over the fence to provide a big crack in the ice against Genesee Valley/Belfast.

Zubikowski would finish as Fillmore’s leading hitter, going 2-for-4 with five total RBI.

Despite the slow beginning, Genesee Valley/Belfast (3-6) was able to hang right with the Eagles across the next inning and change, as their deficit grew to as large as five and to as little a pair after the first two innings of play, which included a Kalen Beardsley two-run single in the bottom of the third to regain traction with a 6-4 deficit to make up going forward.

But for Fillmore, it was time well spent in the fourth, as the offense let loose on an eight-run frame that allowed them to garner all the cushioning they needed to zoom away towards victory behind a 15-run, nine-hit effort on the attack. Following Zubikowski in the lineup was Mitch Ward, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Damon Potter drove in two more runs himself.

On the rubber, the victory was awarded to Luke Colombo, who fanned one and walked one.

For Genesee Valley/Belfast, Evan Turybury went 2-for-3 with a double and RBI, while Matt Cater and Carter Stout each had an RBI single.

If the weather permits in the upcoming days, Fillmore will head back home to host a humongous and fierce battle alongside the Arkport/Canaseraga Wolves beginning at 2 p.m. on Saturday, while Genesee Valley/Belfast hops on the bus to visit Alfred-Almond in a 5 p.m. visit on Monday.

Fillmore 338 10 – 15 9 3

Genesee Valley/Belfast 131 00 – 5 5 6

FIL – Luke Colombo (WP) (K, BB), Mitch Ward (5) (2K) and Nolan Krzeminski.

GVB – Thai Norasethaporn (LP) (K, BB), Carter Stout (2) (K), Matt Cater (3) (2K, 2BB), Owen Heaney (4) (BB), Fisher Herdman (5) (2K) and Evan Turybury.

Hinsdale 20, Archbishop Walsh 2 (F-5)

HINSDALE — The Bobcats of Hinsdale saw the offense erupt on all fronts on their home diamond on Thursday, leaning on solid performances from both Xander Pascucci on the mound and from Tyler Richards at the plate to set the tone against visiting Archbishop Walsh, as they strolled their way towards a 20-2 win after five innings.

Pascucci was solid across the shortened battle on the rubber, as the Hinsdale (3-5) hurler handed out eight chairs and walked five across his start. At the plate, Richards led the bats with a 3-for-4 outing that consisted of five team-high RBI. Along the way, Damion Brown had a bigger bat to add in, going 3-for-3 with a triple and double.

A complete box score on the game was not made available to report upon publication.

Hinsdale returns to the field on Tuesday with a 5 p.m. visit to Fillmore.

SOFTBALL

Wellsville 7, Hornell 2

WELLSVILLE — Although the Lady Lions had to overcome a slow start to their battle against the Lady Red Raiders of Hornell, they would accept the challenge that their longtime rival brought to the center of the table.

With it, the bats soon began to catch flames on the attack, more and more, and more and more. That would help in closing out their battle with Hornell with the game’s first runs while under tremendous guidance from Makenzie Cowburn in relief, garnering the 7-2 edge over the Lady Red Raiders at Tullar Field.

The Lady Lions (13-1) were able to work their way through a tough battle right alongside the Lady Red Raiders in the opening frames of play, scoring a run in each the first and second to create a two-run cushion ahead. After trading a scoreless third inning with their opposition, the hosts in black and orange found their rhythm at the plate after their bats continued to flare up.

It would then cause a partial eruption with five more runs across the third and fourth innings, beginning with a smack from Averee Palmatier into the outfield in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring one of the team’s two runs on an RBI double. Later on from within a three-run fifth inning, the damage would soon be done by Makenna Dunbar, as she blasted a two-run double herself to the outfield fence, branching out Wellsville’s lead to seven.

While the offense kept cooking, Cowburn kept holding Hornell in check since the beginning of her relief appearance. But despite it, the Lady Red Raiders were able to find the board for the first and only time in the seventh, scoring a pair of runs off six total hits at the plate.

Cowburn would wrap up a magnificent outing of relief in the circle for the Lady Lions, fanning 10 Hornell batters. On the attack, Natalie Adams had the big bat, going a perfect 3-for-3 with a double, while Emma Dunaway chipped in two more hits out of the team’s 11 all together.

For the Lady Red Raiders, Jordyn Dyring tallied two of the team’s six hits, while Kaidence Gollnitz blasted a triple to further the offensive cause. In the circle, Reagan Evingham went all seven innings, dishing out four strikeouts and four walks.

The Lady Lions are back in action bright and early Saturday morning, if the rain holds steady, as they prepare for a trip to Mudville to partake in tournament action with battles against Shaker and New Hartford, beginning at 10:15 a.m.

Portville Tournament

Portville 6, Cuba-Rushford 0

PORTVILLE — To open tournament action in Portville, the host Lady Panthers engaged in an early stage fight with Cuba-Rushford on Thursday. But soon it would cool off in exchange for some red hot offense that emerged in the third inning, as they broke open the floodgates with their biggest tenure of attack to breakaway towards eventual victory, swiping the 6-0 shutout over the Lady Rebels.

The Lady Rebels (6-4) were held to just five hits at the plate while Portville began making their connections after a 1-0 lead through two innings. In the bottom of the third, the Lady Panthers provided strong punctuations on everything they had in front of them, scratching across four big runs through a mixture of offense and special teams to get the job done, pulling away down the stretch in the process.

Of the five hits, Laney Murphy led with two for Cuba-Rushford, while Aubrey Williams had a double. On the mound, Sydney Howard struck out two and walked two in her five-inning start.

The visitors in gray and blue were kept on their feet from start to finish by Alisha Dickerson in the circle for Portville, as she fanned 13 Cuba-Rushford batters and walked one in her complete game.

If weather permits, Cuba-Rushford will return to Portville for Consolation round festivities on Saturday, as they face either Allegany-Limestone or Randolph at a time to be determined.

Genesee Valley/Belfast 12, Fillmore 2

BELMONT — A perfect combination between offense and defense ruled the night for Genesee Valley/Belfast on Thursday, as their bats ignited right from the start while Hannah Southwick-Powers took complete command from within the circle against visiting Fillmore, holding the Lady Eagles steady for the team to capitalize on a 12-2 home win in the Jungle at Genesee Valley.

“We hit the ball, and Hannah was lights out. The walks have killed us the last couple of games, but she only had one tonight. That’s huge,” said GV/Belfast coach Mark Sullivan. “The girls are heating up, and when you can finally feel your hands tonight, that’s even better. I was pleased with how everyone played, especially on defense, we made some great plays. Our confidence continued to grow right from the start.”

Genesee Valley/Belfast (4-4) put the hammer down almost immediately from the beginning of their opening at-bats of the game. Out of the 12 runs they would post, half of them would come in the first two innings of play, including a four-run spurt off four straight hits at the plate to break the ice against Fillmore.

Three different hitters accumulated at least a pair of hits at the plate to help that cause, with a perfect 4-for-4 outing stemming for Jenna Hall, as she led the bats with a pair of doubles. Raygen Haggstrom chipped in with three hits, which also included a double, while Anna Drozdowski had two hits.

After the hosts took a 6-0 lead on the Lady Eagles (3-7), the visitors in black and green would eliminate Southwick-Powers’ potential shutout bid in the top of third, as they went on to score back-to-back runs beginning with an Emma Beardsley RBI single — one of three hits in the inning, of the team’s five total for the game.

Genesee Valley/Belfast would go on and finish the night strong after Fillmore chipped their deficit down to four, as they posted the last six runs of the game to insurmountably race away towards victory for good.

Southwick-Powers went all game long in the circle for the hosts in black and gray, as she held Fillmore to five hits while striking out 10 and walking one. On the other side, Mylee Miler fanned three and walked four in her complete game for the Lady Eagles.

On Saturday, if the weather permits, both teams will return to action with afternoon battles in store, as Genesee Valley/Belfast returns to Belmont with an 11 a.m. first pitch against Avoca/Prattsburgh, while Fillmore heads home to welcome in Arkport/Canaseraga in a 2 p.m. contest.

Bolivar-Richburg 15, Andover/Whitesville 0 (F-6)

WHITESVILLE — Since the Lady Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg started their seven-game tear, the offense has been electrifyingly comparable to the Energizer Bunny — the bats have kept going and going and going and going. On Thursday, they didn’t let off the gas pedal one bit, as they posted 15 runs off 21 massive hits to power up a 15-0 win over Andover/Whitesville on the road.

The Lady Wolverines (8-0) were on fire right from the start, as they plated at least two runs across five of the six innings of action at the plate, beginning with a three-run opening frame led by a lead-off solo shot from McKinlee Harris. Two more runs came across to branch out their early lead to five off an RBI single from Haley Mascho and an RBI triple from Madigan Harris, keeping the flame ablaze at the plate.

After a scoreless third inning was exchanged by both teams, Bolivar-Richburg rekindled the bats with the last 10 runs in a row to close the game out, including two more bombs launched by Malayna Ayers — a two-run shot in the top of the team’s three-run fourth, and later, a solo homer in the top of the team’s five-run fifth.

The offense helped feed off the energy that Mascho helped provide for the defense during their time spent on the field, holding Andover/Whitesville (0-7) to just four hits, striking out nine to put towards her complete game victory. At the plate, McKinlee Harris led all Lady Wolverines with an outstanding and immaculate 5-for-5 outing with her home run, two triples and five total RBI.

Adding help were Mascho, Cassidy Stives and Allie Zilker, all posting two hits each.

For Andover/Whitesville, Olivia Waters, Gabby Terhune, Mathea Reynolds and Leigha Phelps all had a hit each.

If weather permits, both teams are back in action Saturday, with Bolivar-Richburg heading back home to host a 6 p.m. colossal matchup against the Bloomfield Lady Bombers, while Andover/Whitesville heads over the hill to face Alfred-Almond in a 1 p.m. first pitch in Andover.

Cuba-Rushford 221, Wellsville 248

WELLSVILLE — For the first time this season, the Rebels of Cuba-Rushford have navigated their way into the win column. Fillmore 205, Genesee Valley/Belfast 223

RUSHFORD — A single night removed from what was one of their best performances of the season in Wellsville, the Eagles of Fillmore returned home to Allegheny Hills in Rushford and did it all over again on Thursday, as Anderson Wiltsey and Reid Cockle were at the top of their games one more in the team’s 205-223 win over visiting Genesee Valley/Belfast.

Wiltsey was at the top of Fillmore’s (5-0) scorecard once more at the end of the night, as he earned the notorious honor of having the match’s lowest round, scoring a 42. Cockle was not far behind him, as he chipped in with a 47 of his own. Layton Sanasith had a 56, while Sam Cool finished his day with a 60.

On the other side of the scorecard, both Chris Weaver and Justin Hill paved the way for Genesee Valley/Belfast’s (2-3-1) success, as each golfer recorded a team-low round of 53. Jacob Borden issued a 58, while Will Guilford contributed a 59 to round off the scoring. If weather permits, Genesee Valley/Belfast will hit the road again tonight, this time to The Club at Silver Lake in Perry where they will face the host Letchworth Indians in a 4 p.m. tee time.

Genesee Valley/Belfast 3, Bolivar-Richburg 2

BELMONT — It was a straight 5-0 sweep for Genesee Valley/Belfast the last time both teams met at Bolivar-Richburg last week, but this time around, the Wolverines applied all the pressure they could.

But despite it all, Genesee Valley/Belfast was able to lock down the shop after sweeping doubles performances paved the way towards the team’s 3-2 edging of Bolivar-Richburg over the road, Friday night.

Two of the team’s three singles matches were in competition, with Densmore lining up a beautiful first singles victory after a strong fight from Genesee Valley/Belfast’s Dominic Marra, recording the 6-1, 6-4 decision. At second singles, Ben Kisel was in a fight for his life, as he had to overcome a scoreless first set shutout to find his rhythm once more.

After a first set downfall to James Frawley, he would quickly rebound with two even tougher sets of tennis with strong finishes in the remaining two sets, scoring wins of 6-2 and 7-5 in a third-set tiebreak to take the winning edge.

“We have improved so much since last week. I’m proud of them for their progress, and the way they tucked in and battled from the start tonight,” said Wolverines coach Eric Baldwin. “Anthony Densmore picked up a big first round win at first singles. It was a great match to be a part of.”

Genesee Valley/Belfast garnered the three remaining victories that were to be had in the field, two of them coming from within the doubles department. The first doubles team of Trevor Clark and Gavin Kenyon put together a strong effort, overcoming a first-set tiebreak to squeeze their way out of the jam with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 win. Liliana Porter and Luke Snyder shook off a nice start from Bolivar-Richburg to deliver a 6-1, 6-4 win over Dominic Marra at first singles.

Spencer Rambaran had Genesee Valley/Belfast’s final victory in hand, strolling past Bolivar-Richburg’s Guinevere Coats with a 6-1, 6-1 dominant victory.
