Wednesday Roundup: Aquila nets both GV goals, Lady Jags bounce back with 2-0 shutout of Wellsville

WELLSVILLE — Both Wellsville and Genesee Valley entering the night, were coming off shutouts on each end of the spectrum, with the Lady Lions winning in a shutout after overtime, while the Lady Jaguars were downed by Fillmore.

The question entering Wednesday night’s game - Who would provide the momentum shift.

It was a difficult question to answer at first glance with gusty winds and chilly temperatures surrounding the turf in Wellsville all throughout the game, as each team battled a hard-fought match in the midfield.

But it was one that was answered by Lady Jaguars senior Emera Aquila, as she provided the spark the visitors in white and green needed to keep lit through the windstorm, accounting for both of the team’s goals, one in each half, to propel Genesee Valley toward a 2-0 shutout of Wellsville.

It was a bit of a slow go between both teams at first through the first 10 minutes, but the Lady Jaguars (1-1) were able to connect with the game’s opening goal from Aquila, starting with a straight jaunt down the far endline and into the Wellsville zone.

Adison Grusendorf let an initial shot go, but it created a rebound in front for Aquila to pick up and put away far post behind Lauren Viglietta in the Lady Lions net to go up by a 1-0 count.

Since the goal, both teams went back and forth down the field while battling to win midfield possession along the way. As a result, Genesee Valley was able to hold onto their 1-0 lead entering the half, after pinning Wellsville (1-1) deep in their defensive zone for the last 15 minutes of the half.

In the second half, the Lady Jaguars continued to put the pressure on Wellsville, which helped Aquila find her second goal of the game, launching the ball from 20 yards away, using the wind to her advantage to score, extending the lead for good by a pair.

As for the defense, Ashley Burrows made just five saves behind the Lady Jaguars to record the shutout in net. On the other side, Viglietta made 10 saves for the Lady Lions.

Both teams will have Bolivar-Richburg up next on the schedule, with the Lady Lions getting first crack Friday night in a 6 p.m. contest. As for Genesee Valley, they will hit the road to visit the same Wolverines on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Fillmore 4, Bolivar-Richburg 0

FILLMORE — The Russells were at it again for the Lady Eagles of Fillmore, as they played a part in all four goals for the team to help begin their season with three straight shutouts, coming away with one against visiting Bolivar-Richburg on Wednesday by a 4-0 count.

The goal scoring was split in half for FIllmore (3-0), with Hope Russell and Shelby Beardsley scoring the first two goals in a five-minute span for the Lady Eagles, with Russell scoring off a pass from Sophia Templeton, while Beardsley received a Grace Russell feed to put away.

With a 2-0 lead in hand, the Lady Eagles added on, with both Russells providing the offense, as Hope scored right away at the very beginning of the second half to make it a 3-0 lead, five minutes in. Later on, Grace finished off the offense with her first of the game, and County-leading 6th of the season.

“When you play B-R, you have to be ready with a good game plan and then execute it. I thought all facets of the game were solid,” Lady Eagles coach Jon Beardsley said. “We're still a step away from what we want, but overall our defense isn't giving up chances, and our midfield is linking up front to back and our offense is creating opportunities. Any win against B-R is always a tough one. We just are enjoying the opportunity to play. The girls love to play, and ours is a good group to work with.”

In goal, Preslee Miller and Lizzy Nugent combined to make six stops, with Miller being credited with her third shutout of the year. Paige Taylor on the other end, made 10 saves for the Lady Wolverines (1-1).

Both teams are back on the field Friday night, as Fillmore heads out to visit Hinsdale with a 7 p.m. contest, while Bolivar-Richburg continues their road swing into Wellsville at 6 p.m.

Cuba-Rushford 2, Hinsdale 0

CUBA — After a hard-fought overtime battle against Wellsville on Monday, there was plenty for the Lady Rebels of Cuba-Rushford to absorb and use as momentum for themselves in their return home two days later.

With Hinsdale in for a visit, the Lady Rebels overcame a sluggish start, and in exchange, settled on a shutout of their own, as Sofia Riquelme and Hunter Jahnke helped power the offense toward victory in the form of a 2-0 triumph over the Lady Bobcats on Wednesday.

“It felt like it took us forever to get going tonight,” said Lady Rebels coach Aaron Wight. “Tara (Duvall) made two really big saves for us right in the early stages, and they ended up being really big in the endgame. I know Hinsdale is struggling with injuries, so credit goes to them. They can really battle, despite being shorthanded.”

Riquelme got on the board first for Cuba-Rushford (1-1) with 14:30 left in the opening 40 minute frame, picking up one of two Taylor Searle assists from center to put past Hinsdale goalkeeper Haylee Jozwiak to ultimately take the 1-0 lead at the half.

They would continue to hold onto the one-goal lead for the majority of the second half, but an opening was created with under five minutes left in the game, as Searle delivered Jahnke the nail in the coffin in the team’s first win of the season, extending Cuba-Rushford’s lead to a pair for good.

In goal, Tara Duvall made four saves to preserve the shutout for the hosts, while Jozwiak set aside nine shots of her own for the Lady Bobcats (0-2) in return.

Both teams will have their crack at Fillmore in the upcoming days, with Hinsdale up first back home for their season opener on Friday at 7 p.m. on their newly-renovated complex. As for the Lady Rebels, they will host the Lady Eagles in a 7 p.m. contest of their own on Tuesday.

Belfast 4, Friendship 0

BELFAST — Four different scorers got on the board for the Lady Bulldogs on offense, and the defense helped pitch a shutout on Wednesday, as Belfast rolled their way toward a 4-0 blanking of visiting Friendship.

Out of the four goals scored, three of them found the back of the Friendship net in the second half of play, with Harley Proctor scoring her third of the year just past the halfway mark of the opening half off a Hannah Southwick pass to give the hosts a 1-0 lead at the break.

In the next half, Anna Drozdowski got involved with the next two Belfast (2-1) goals, assisting on Mary Hamer’s first of the season just past the 10 minute mark of the second half to branch the lead to a pair. She followed up three minutes later with one of her own, coming unassisted.

The scoring concluded with under 10 minutes left to play, as Cassandra Guilford sent along a pass to Alicia Borden for her to finish off at the 9:53 mark, giving Belfast the 4-0 win at game’s end.

Kaitlin Sadler made no saves in the shutout for the Lady Bulldogs, while Navaeh Ross and Madeline Larrow combined to stop 11 shots for the Lady Golden Eagles (0-2).

The Lady Bulldogs will return to action next Thursday night back on their home field, as they welcome in Andover/Whitesville for a 7 p.m. clash.

Friendship however, will continue their search for their first win with Scio coming for a visit at 5 p.m. on Friday.
