Monday Roundup: Costello, Riley each net hat trick in Wellsville’s 8-0 rout of C-R; B-R picks up massive League victory over GV/Belfast

WELLSVILLE — When Wellsville paid a visit to Bolivar-Richburg late last week, they were in a closely-knit battle all the way to the end. As a result, no goals were posted on the scoreboard in what was the first tie of the season for the Lions.

In the past two games since their 11-0 win over Andover/Whitesville earlier this month, the Lions offense has been at a standstill. When they returned home to resume their home slate on Monday, they went back to their high-scoring ways.

Without any sense of doubt, time was made up rather quickly with Cuba-Rushford in for their first visit, pummeling the visiting cage with four first half goals to set the tone immediately, scoring four more in the last 40 minute session to wrap up what was an 8-0 shutout over the Rebels.

Cody Costello and Aidan Riley led the Lions (3-3-1) offense with six of the eight goals, each netting a hat trick. The goals would come after Asher Billings picked up his first of the season just over nine minutes removed after the opening whistle. Costello and Riley found their way onto the board with the next four goals, Costello’s coming in consecutive fashion to end the first half and start the second half to complete his hat trick.

After Costello’s third goal of the game past the three minute mark of the second half, Kavan O’Grady would extend Wellsville’s lead to six with a goal of his own just two minutes after. Riley would record his last two goals of the session, and for the team finding the back of the net near the 10 minute mark, and later on, with under 13 minutes remaining to close out the offense.

Wellsville would heavily outshoot Cuba-Rushford (3-3) by a 20-7 total count, with Logan Dunbar securing the shutout behind all seven saves. On the other side, Jarrett Campbell made 12 saves for the Rebels.

Both teams are back on the field Wednesday night, as the Lions look to continue the momentum swing into Jasper-Troupsburg in their 7 p.m. battle, while Cuba-Rushford continues their road trip to Belmont, visiting Genesee Valley/Belfast in a 5 p.m. contest of their own.

Bolivar-Richburg 4, Genesee Valley/Belfast 2

BOLIVAR — Out of the six goals that were tucked away, five of them came in what was an active first half of play between both Genesee Valley/Belfast and Bolivar-Richburg on Monday.

Goals were traded back and forth, but that came after a scoreless midfield battle took up the majority of the time in the opening session. Once the ice was broken, the lead that was collected, remained in one team’s favor for the rest of the game.

That being Bolivar-Richburg, as they scored a pair of goals in a two-minute span beginning at the midway mark to jump on top, despite their lead being cut down toward the end of the half, picking up a big 4-2 win at home in Allegany County Division I battle.

“The boys had an early spark, and it was nice to see them respond with a little success,” said Wolverines coach Mike Zilker. “It’s amazing to see the boys play when they have a big boost of confidence. Mark (Sullivan) has a great team over there, and they gave us a good battle. It was nice to see some things continue to go our way tonight. All the boys played very well.”

Wyatt Karnuth and Landon Barkley got the scoring started with back-to-back goals in two minutes for the Wolverines (5-2-2), with Karnuth breaking the ice open with his unassisted marker before Barkley extended the lead by a pair with his goal from a Reiss Gaines helper in the back.

Genesee Valley/Belfast (5-3) cut the deficit in half almost five minutes later from Matt Weaver and his 12th goal of the season. After a blow was dealt, and the Wolverines lead was pushed back out to a pair by Hunter Stuck’s penalty kick with 7:49 to go, the visitors would chip away again in the waning seconds of the half, as Weaver dished out a helper to Joe Ward for his second of the season.

In the second half, the Wolverines made sure they kept their lead in tact the rest of the way with their fourth and final tally coming from the foot of Gaines five minutes in, with Barkley handing out the assist that allowed them to wrap up shop strong.

Both teams had an even distribution of offense, each collecting eight shots in the contest, but it was David Abdo that earned the win in goal for the hosts in black and red, stopping five shots. On the other side, Garrett Miller made eight saves for Genesee Valley/Belfast.

On Wednesday, each team steps back onto the field to resume play, as Bolivar-Richburg looks to continue their winning ways with a 7 p.m. battle under the lights against Fillmore, while Genesee Valley/Belfast welcomes Cuba-Rushford for a visit in Belmont at 5 p.m.

Fillmore 8, Jasper-Troupsburg 1

TROUPSBURG — The Fillmore offense was red hot once again, as they went over the road to Jasper-Troupsburg and found the back of the net eight times, five of them coming in the second half of play to pull away from the Wildcats for good to earn their sixth win in first eight games by an 8-1 count on Monday.

All three of Fillmore’s (6-2) first half goals were set up by Noorideen Musaid-Omar, with his first two going to Graham Cahill in a 2:34 span before dishing his third and final assist off to Mitch Ward five minutes later to wrap up the goal-scoring.

After Jasper-Troupsburg ended the possibility of a shutout off a Sawyer Troxel direct kick in the opening minutes of the second half, the Eagles went on to capitalize on the offensive front from all angles, scoring the next five unanswered goals, three minutes after the shutout-ender. Within the strand of goals, Ward would add his second goal of the game, while Zach Sisson, Jack Cool, Eben Schilke and Carter Sisson all recorded goals of their own.

Ward and Zach Sisson would each dish out a pair of helpers along the way, while Schilke and Lucas Hersee had one of their own to add in inside a 21-shot effort on the offensive front for the Eagles.

In goal, Mike McCumiskey made stops on two shots to secure the win.

The Eagles are back home Wednesday night, as they welcome in the Bolivar-Richburg Wolverines for a 7 p.m. first kick under the lights in a massive Allegany County Division I matchup.

Scio 6, Andover/Whitesville 0

WHITESVILLE — After starting the season 0-4, the Tigers of Scio are beginning to find their rhythm. They would add to it with another run come Monday night, visiting Andover/Whitesville and returning home with their third straight triumph in a 6-0 shutout in Whitesville.

Jordan White helped set a tone that would resonate in the first half for the Tigers (3-4), scoring both of his goals in the session, with his first coming nearly five minutes into the game. In between his goals, Lazar Bulajic found the back of the net himself near the halfway point to help give the team a 3-0 lead at the break.

Max Morris added to the team’s lead 57 seconds into the new half with a goal of his own. Later on, Brendan Loucks and a second goal from Bulajic would wrap up the team’s victory with the remaining tallies inside an offensive effort that included 19 total shots on the Andover/Whitesville (1-6) cage.

Landon Arnold saw just two shots come in his direction for the Tigers, making both stops to earn the shutout. On the other side, Carson Frungillo made 14 saves for the hosts.

On Wednesday, action will resume for both squads with Scio looking for their fourth straight win back home with the Hinsdale Bobcats in for a 7 p.m. visit, while Andover/Whitesville remains home to host Houghton Academy for a 5 p.m. battle in Whitesville.

Northstar 5, Houghton Academy 0

HOUGHTON — The Northstar Christian Knights were connecting on all offensive fronts during their road trip to Houghton Academy on Monday, as they returned home victorious behind a 5-0 shutout of the host Panthers.

The tone was set immediately by the Knights in the first half of play, scoring a 3-0 lead they never looked back on, finishing with 39 total shots on the Houghton Academy (1-3) cage along the way.

Chris Habecker would make 19 saves in between the pipes for the Panthers, who hit the road Wednesday night for a 5 p.m. contest against Andover/Whitesville, in Whitesville.

Hinsdale 6, Friendship 0

HINSDALE — The Bobcats of Hinsdale fired 18 shots on the Friendship cage while just allowing one on defense back the other way, as the offense rolled toward their fourth victory in the first five games with a 6-0 shutout of the visiting Golden Eagles, Monday night.

Hinsdale (4-1) took a 3-0 lead into their grasp going into halftime, as Tucker Schwartz began the scoring just over four minutes in. Two minutes later, Kadyn Cassidy followed up with one of his two goals in the contest, finding the back of the net on his first unassisted trip into the Friendship zone. Finishing off the first half scoring was Damion Brown, who tallied a goal of his own past the midway mark to close out the frame on a strong note.

Cassidy would lead off the second half scoring near the midway mark with his second of the game to branch Hinsdale’s lead out to four. In the last 15 minutes, the bow was tied on the victory with a goal each from Caden Miller and Isaac Howell. Brandon Hayman would add an assist on Howell’s goal.

In goal, Ethan Cashimere made one save to record the shutout for the Bobcats, while Hunter Hill and Taylor Moore combined to make six saves for the Golden Eagles (0-8).

Hinsdale will hit the road on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. battle with the Scio Tigers, while Friendship continues their road swing on Friday with a 5 p.m. visit to Houghton Academy.

GIRLS SOCCER

Friendship/Scio 3, Hammondsport 2 (F-OT)

FRIENDSHIP — It was a game that host Friendship/Scio had to work their way from behind in, Monday night. When Hammondsport came out swinging, a response was provided by the hosts, but quickly turned back into a lead for the Lady Lakers when halftime arrived.

But the tables were turned when a tie was reached fairly quickly into the second half, ultimately forcing overtime. And in the extra sessions, Friendship/Scio found a way to end it, as Lexi Crossley was awarded the game-winning goal after both 10 minute frames expired to complete the team’s comeback victory by a 3-2 count in Friendship to end a three-game slide.

Hannah Hoerter was responsible for putting Hammondsport on the board first, and then giving them the lead back to enter halftime, scoring both goals just six minutes after the opening kick and later with 90 seconds left. In between the Lady Lakers goals, Logan Roberts provided the first deadlock for Friendship/Scio (2-6) past the 10 minute mark, making her unassisted run to the cage for the score.

Trailing by one into the second half, the response to Hoerter’s first half-ending goal was quick for the hosts, as Roberts scored her second of the game off a feed provided by Claire Calhoun at the seven minute mark to tie the game at two for the remainder of regulation, allowing Crossley to set up shop with what was the game-winning goal to finish off the team’s come-from-behind triumph off a pass from Roberts, who finishes a five-point night for Friendship/Scio.

The Friendship/Scio offense was heavily productive on the frontlines, as they went on to outshoot Hammondsport by a 23-7 count. In between the posts, Nevaeh Ross recorded the win behind five saves.

Friendship/Scio will hit the road on Thursday, as they now prepare for a 5 p.m. visit to Mount Morris.
