Friday Roundup: Hamer’s stout attack, Sullivan’s late 4th quarter surge paces GV/Belfast with 51-38 win over Perry; Finney outlasts Fillmore, Rebels roll past Wellsville to set up IAABO title game
BELMONT — After a tough battle right down to the wire against Jasper-Troupsburg earlier this week, the road ahead did not get any easier for the Genesee Valley/Belfast ladies.
With the Perry Lady Yellowjackets in town for a visit in the Jungle on Friday, it would formulate into another back-and-forth battle they would have to navigate through, especially in a first half which saw back-and-forth baskets between the two squads being exchanged all throughout.
Genesee Valley/Belfast would collect a one-point lead to control going into the break. But in the second half, the hosts in white began to strike all chords on the metaphorical guitar. Led by Mary Hamer, anything was most certainly possible.
In what was a 29-18 outscoring of Perry across the second half, Genesee Valley/Belfast managed to fend off what pressure Perry was able to pin against them, as Hamer’s massive night along with a strong supporting cast right behind her allowed them to rebound from Monday’s defeat to the Lady Wildcats and transform it into a 51-38 bounce back win over the Lady Yellowjackets — their third victory in their first four games.
“Tonight was evidence of Mary’s ability to make everyone around her better. This was a total team win. Our defense continues to improve and we were able to finish defensive possessions with rebounds,” GV/Belfast coach Raegan Ryan said. “We knew coming in that rebounding would be a difference maker in the outcome of the game. Sophie Zillgitt did an excellent job defending Jaelyn Morris, who is a really tough point guard that provides so much for their team. We’re continuing to grow, and tonight we grew more as a team.”
Right off the bat, the back-and-forth first quarter started with Genesee Valley/Belfast (3-1) scoring the first four points behind a Sophie Zillgitt lay-in right off the opening tip and two shots from Hamer at the line. All before Perry was able to respond later on in the quarter with four points of their own, and then some, as they claimed the lead to keep the pendulum shifting on both sides at a constant.
Genesee Valley/Belfast was able to hang onto a 14-12 lead after the first quarter behind a go-ahead basket from Ava Aaronson before a battle of defenses would take center stage in the second. In the midst of the defensive battle that saw a ton of rebounds off the glass, the hosts in white saw a narrow opening that Hamer was able to create from downtown, as she nailed a pair of triples down the stretch with ease, including the team’s last shot toward the end of the frame to take a one-point, 22-21 advantage into the locker room.
On their return to the floor, a wide variety of Genesee Valley/Belfast shooters all made their mark within the team’s 15-point quarter — their largest of the night, including Hamer, who had nine of those points to keep the offense stabilized. But despite it, Perry was able to stay within reach going into the fourth quarter behind a triple from Madelyn Monteleone and four big points from Jaelyn Morris.
With the Lady Yellowjackets continuing to stay hot on their trail, Genesee Valley/Belfast saw another strong outlet come into creation. Abby Sullivan had the honor of doing that, as she posted eight of her 10 points in the last eight minutes of play to headline a strong 14-6 finish for the hosts to aid the hosts in their victory.
“I am really proud of Abby. She pulled their best guard defender tonight, and had to be patient in order for the game to come to her,” Ryan said. “You never know when your time will come where your team needs you, and she took care of business to help seal the deal for us in the fourth. She showed a lot of grit tonight working through all of that, and she really embraced her defensive role during that time as well. Kendra Bigelow and Kate Calanni came in and gave us some solid minutes off the bench. What they brought doesn’t show up in the stats, but they did a really nice job for us doing their job.”
Hamer’s powerful display of offense led all scorers on the floor for Genesee Valley/Belfast, as she collected a game-high 26 points. Behind Sullivan and her 10 points was Aaronson, who finished with six points. Zillgitt and Jenna Hill rounded off the scoring with five and four points, respectively.
Up next is a road trip to Campbell-Savona for Genesee Valley/Belfast, as they get set to visit the Lady Panthers after the weekend on Monday at 7:15 p.m.

Cowanesque Valley Tourney: Adams, Palmatier pace Lady Lions to title game over NP-Mansfield
WESTFIELD, Pa. — The old saying “survive and advance” can ring true for many things, especially in sports when it comes to the postseason.
For the Lady Lions of Wellsville, a tough, hard-fought defensive game against North Penn-Mansfield on Friday, morphed into a game where in order to advance, you needed to survive. In this particular instance, an all-out defensive battle that encapsulated almost all of the game’s time.
Trailing by three going into the break, something had to crack through for the Lady Lions. Fortunately enough, they would not have to wait any longer for it to arrive, as they used a strong third quarter to the absolute maximum to break away from North Penn-Mansfield’s grasp and towards a Saturday night Finals berth at Cowanesque Valley’s annual tournament with a 27-21 victory.
The difference for the Lady Lions (3-0) would come after making their grand return to the floor for the second half. Trailing by three to the hands of North Penn-Mansfield, the response they went on to deliver would resonate the rest of the way home, as they held their opposition to just two points while capitalizing on a 14-2 game-changing run to pull away in their all-out defensive affair to claim a spot in the title game the following day.
Another big x-factor that Wellsville served up: two ginormous three-pointers — one from Natalie Adams and one from Makenna Dunbar. Shots that would make even more of a difference when the game continued to wind down in the second half. Adams would lead the way in scoring for the Lady Lions alongside Averee Palmatier, with seven points. Palmatier also grabbed a team-leading seven boards off the glass.
Dunbar had five points to go with three boards, two assists and two steals, while Caelyn Stevens and Jaden Dunbar rounded off with four. In addition, Jaden Dunbar opened up the field behind her hustle with four rebounds and four steals to power the special teams play even further.
In the JV contest, the Lady Lions claimed the 21-14 win over North Penn-Mansfield to earn their spot in the title game, which begins at 4 p.m. tonight. Leading the scoring was Reegan Perkins, who had eight points.
Wellsville will now take on Northern Potter for the Cowanesque Valley tournament crown tonight, as the two foes meet on the hardwood in a 6 p.m. tip-off.

Oswayo Valley 32, Cuba-Rushford 18
CUBA — Oswayo Valley’s Charlotte Austin-Keech and MaKenna Manning both ignited the first quarter with some great looks inside and out, as they assembled an early advantage over visiting Cuba-Rushford. The advantage would then soon grow out of the reach of the Lady Rebels as time pressed forward. As a result, the Lady Green Wave would take care of the win by a 32-18 count on Friday.
Austin-Keech and Manning collaborated on a first quarter start that saw Oswayo Valley jump out early on the Lady Rebels (1-3), especially Austin-Keech, who totaled 13 of her 15 game-high points all in the first half to get the Lady Green Wave offense motoring along. It was a lead that the hosts were able to hold until the end of time, as Cuba-Rushford’s offense was held to at least five points across all four frames of play.
On offense for the Lady Rebels, Brynn Lavery propelled to the front of the line with her eight team-high points. Lilly Farwell had seven to chip in.
Cuba-Rushford will look to turn it back around on Thursday back home for their first annual tournament on the hardwood, when they welcome in the Olean Lady Huskies for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off. Pioneer and Canisteo-Greenwood will precede the contest, at 6 p.m.

IAABO Tournament: C.G. Finney outlasts Fillmore, C-R’s strong start over Wellsville sets up title game
WELLSVILLE — An annual tradition on the hardwood has returned to Wellsville in full force on Friday, as C.G. Finney, Fillmore, Cuba-Rushford and the host Lions all met at one place and one time to battle it out for early season supremacy in the Allegany County IAABO Tournament.
Two flocks of birds were on tap first to start the night in the Lion’s Den, as the Falcons and the Eagles battled it out from start to finish in a high-octane, shooting clinic. Each quarter was determined by no more than five points between each team, but at the end of it, C.G. Finney saw five different scorers all record at least 10 points to power their offense, propelling their way to victory with a 78-69 win over Fillmore to begin the night.
“Finney is always a tough matchup, and, as usual, it was a great game,” Eagles coach Randy Crouch said. “We didn't do a good enough job adjusting to their defense, and we were way too careless with the ball. Finney is a team that we could see in the playoffs, so it is a chance for us to learn and get better.”
Among the five scorers for the Falcons, Ethan Krogg dug in and delivered a dynamic performance, leading all scorers with a game-high 26 points. The Falcons garnered the edge throughout the first half while keeping the Eagles (2-2) on their feet, as they took command of an 18-13 lead through the opening period.
Fillmore would regain traction at the start of the second quarter, as they posted an early 10-0 run against the Falcons in the first two minutes to retake the lead. The pendulum would then shift back into the Falcons’ favor after a timeout on the floor, using a massive 14-3 run of their own to set the table for a 32-26 lead with two minutes remaining in the half. C.G. Finney would keep the momentum in their favor going into the break, keeping their six-point lead intact.
The biggest lead one would reach in the third quarter was seven, which was collected by the Falcons near the midway mark of the frame. But that advantage was trimmed down by Fillmore to as little as one on a couple of different occasions to remain well within striking distance, courtesy of their 22-point stanza.
The Falcons would manage to hang on in the last eight minutes of play, as they collected a lead as big as nine while using the free throw line down the final stretch to firmly secure their lead on the Eagles for good, claiming a spot in Saturday’s Championship game.
Fillmore witnessed JD Bialek make his way to the front of the line on the scoresheet, as he posted a team-high 17 points. Right behind him, Zach Sisson followed up with 16 points of his own, while Jonah Bialek had 11.
In the nightcap between Cuba-Rushford and Wellsville, it was a fast start by the Rebels that went on to make all the difference, taking a lead they would never look back on behind Finn Ricketts from the field and Peyton Joy’s clutch shooting from the charity stripe, as they punched their ticket to the IAABO Tournament title game with a 56-38 win over the Lions.
“We came out real cold and slow, and it gave them the momentum early,” said Lions coach Tom Muska. “Finn Ricketts had a great game for Cuba and he plays with an infectious energy that I think kept them going through our attempts to chip back. Him and (Braeden) Wight shot really well. It really hurts to see us drop another home game, but I still see us playing our best basketball down the road. Hopefully a much better showing will be had tomorrow.”
The Rebels (3-0) defense went straight to work in the opening eight minutes of play, as they held Wellsville without a single shot from the field in the midst of their 9-2 first quarter lead. The frame on offense was paced by three different scorers, including a pair of baskets from Kaden Bell, to get them started on the biggest of footsteps.
The advantage was held intact as the game progressed. Because of it, Cuba-Rushford saw Finn Ricketts rise to power to help charge up a 16-point frame with a trio of shots inside, as well as a 5-for-6 outing at the charity stripe from Peyton Joy to lay claim on a 25-15 lead at the break.
In the third quarter, the Rebels kept one foot ahead of the other in a third quarter that saw them cement their victory for good behind another strong outing from Ricketts, and three humongous three-pointers off the hand of Braeden Wight in the midst of their largest stanza of offense in the game.
Ricketts would finish as Cuba-Rushford’s leading scorer with 18 game-high points. WIght would follow his 11 points, which also saw a perfect 2-for-2 at the line during his third quarter array of triples. Joy finished with eight points in total to help further the team’s cause.
For Wellsville, JJ Howard led the offense with his team-high 14 points, while Ty Vogel had 11 to chip in.
All four teams are back on the hardwood in the Lion’s Den today beginning with the Consolation round between Fillmore and Wellsville in a 12 p.m. tip-off. Later in the day, Cuba-Rushford and C.G. Finney will battle it out to determine this year’s IAABO Tournament champion in a 2 p.m. tip-off.

Andover/Whitesville 72, Alfred-Almond 34
ALMOND — It was clear that after Wednesday’s home loss to Cuba-Rushford and before they hit the bus and visit the Reilly Center at St. Bonaventure after the weekend, Andover/Whitesville’s road trip to Alfred-Almond on Friday was one that they wanted to have.
It was not an easy task by any means. Throughout the entire first half, it was as close quarters of a battle you could imagine. But it was one that Andover/Whitesville managed to construct a lead to pioneer the second half with.
The first half served as a tremor. But when the second half came, a full-blown eruption stirred.
With Alfred-Almond remaining well within reach, Andover/Whitesville decided to take matters into their own hands once and for all, especially in the fourth quarter. Leading by 11 going into the last eight minutes, Brody Vance and Colton Calladine simply could not be stopped, as the two sharpshooters combined to record 41 second half points to propel the team towards victory in dominant fashion, rolling to a 72-34 win over the Eagles.
“Jerry (Jusianiec) had his guys ready to play, and I think we definitely underestimated their quick hands and tough defense. But tonight was certainly a game that was much-needed to win tonight,” said Andover/Whitesville coach Jimmy Joyce. “Alfred-Almond showed what they were capable of in the first half. Once we kind of amped up our pressure defensively, and moved the ball offensively, we finally found our footing. Brody exploding for 27 in the second half was huge, and Colton turned it around nicely after he wasn’t really his normal self in the first half.”
Led by an array of scorers all finding their way through to the basket, Andover/Whitesville (3-2) was able to grab an early upper hand to control against Alfred-Almond through the game’s opening quarter before both teams were dead even across the next frame of play. That would allow the visitors in black to remain in the driver’s seat with a 21-17 lead going into the second half.
A lead that was pressured by the Eagles, but never relinquished.
In the second half, Andover/Whitesville made sure it remained intact with the rise of Brody Vance and Colton Calladine, as the team’s two hot hands from all angles on the floor came together to record 40 of the team’s 51 second half points, with 27 of them belonging to Vance. With an 11-point lead going into the fourth quarter, Andover/Whitesville put together a big finish to ensure their night would end in a win, as they outscored Alfred-Almond with a 31-4 run that immediately allowed them to speed away for good.
Vance would front the Andover/Whitesville attack with his 30 game-high points. Calladine followed behind him with 16 points, while Vincent Joyce chipped in with 12 points of his own.
“I thought Vinny and Ethan (Warriner) both had one of their best games this season. Jake (Mattison) also continues to improve each night, which is great to see,” Joyce said. “If we can keep getting contributions from everybody, I think we’ll be just fine. We definitely have a lot of work to do still to get to where we want to be, but the season is still pretty young. We have yet to put a full four quarters together. Once we get there, anything is possible.”
Andover/Whitesville has a big night ahead of them after the weekend on Monday, as they now travel to the Reilly Center on the grounds of St. Bonaventure University, where they will meet up with Arkport/Canaseraga for a 7:15 p.m. tip-off following the girls matchup between both schools at 5:45 p.m.

Jasper-Troupsburg 43, Houghton Academy 33
JASPER — Both Houghton Academy and Jasper-Troupsburg tilted the balance of power across the first half of play, with the visiting Panthers rebounding in the second quarter to lay claim on a one-point lead going into the break.
It would provide a chance to establish even more momentum, while for the host Wildcats: the chance to perform a flip of the script.
In the third quarter, that same script was indeed flipped by the team in white and black, as they reversed Houghton Academy’s second quarter outscoring and used it in their favor during the third to regain traction on the game’s lead, holding it the rest of the way while under duress from the Panthers defense to finish up a close 43-33 win on Friday.
Jasper-Troupsburg was clicking on both fronts across the first quarter to set up shop. On offense, the Wildcats collected three triples from three different shooters to establish their ground from outside, while the defense, in turn, allowed just two shots from the field by Houghton Academy — both by Josh Davidson inside and out.
WIth a 13-7 lead to make up, the Panthers (2-2) reversed course and flipped the momentum into their favor going into the break, as Davidson continued to chip in from all fronts alongside a Jack Prentice three-pointer to help complete a win of the second quarter and a 19-18 lead over the Wildcats at the break.
But in the second half, the Wildcats would find their groove once and for all, behind the emergence of Landon Zver, who posted 16 of his 19 game-high points all in the last 16 minute session to turn the tide back into their favor and claim the victory that awaited in the end.
Despite the defeat, Houghton Academy saw another breakout performance from Davidson develop, as he posted 18 team-leading points. Prentice ended with seven points, while James Adenuga and Jack Qi rounded off the scoring with five, and three points each.
The Panthers are back home after the weekend, as they host Friendship/Scio in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off on Monday.

Bolivar-Richburg 79, Friendship/Scio 24
SCIO — The Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg were a force to be reckoned with Friday night, as they ended their week of action in style with a powerful start against host Friendship/Scio that they never looked back from at the start and to the finish line, claiming the 79-24 victory — their fourth in a row to open the campaign, in Scio.
A trio of 20-point quarters gave the Wolverines (4-0) a giant surge straight out of the gate, beginning with their largest frame of offense they mustered in the game while holding Friendship/Scio to their smallest, as they howled towards a 27-2 first quarter run that ultimately saw them put the hammer down almost immediately.
“Got to give credit where credit is due. B-R is very good at the guard position, and they have a number of athletes that can really go by you,” said Friendship/Scio coach Dillon McFall. “They can get after it, and that was a big difference tonight. Their physicality, their intensity were both very high and for us, we aren’t on that same level quite yet.”
Paving the way towards big success for the visitors in black and red was Aydin Sisson, who recorded a game-high 22 points. Landon Barkley chipped in with 14 points of his own, while Kingston Loucks was the third Wolverines scorer to eclipse double figures, netting 11 points.
Friendship/Scio (1-2) was paced by Deacon Brown and his six points inside. Kiernan Romero and Jerimiah Brown each had five points to add in. The team will return to action over the road Monday night with a 7:30 p.m. visit to Houghton Academy.
Bolivar-Richburg is back home on Tuesday, where they will meet the Portville Panthers for a second time in their first five games, beginning in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
