Thursday Roundup: Lions, Wolverines battle 100 minutes but settle on scoreless tie; Wellsville, B-R, Fillmore volleyball all record sweeping victories

BOLIVAR — The offenses came alive for both Wellsville and Bolivar-Richburg to wrap up the two-day set at Dunsmore-Latimer Field on Thursday. The chances were poured on, and between both teams, a grand total of 26 shots on goal were collected.

But after the game saw all 100 minutes take occupancy, no shot was identified as the golden goal. For Wellsville, it would be the first tie, and for Bolivar-Richburg, their second in three games and by the same exact result, as they concluded in a scoreless deadlock.

Wellsville (2-3-1) would go on to narrowly outshoot Bolivar-Richburg by a 14-12 count to lead the offensive front, but as for the bigger opportunities, the Wolverines (4-1-2) held that under their possession with a 10-4 advantage from the corner to apply a fair amount of pressure onto the Lions cage.

In goal, Logan Dunbar would go on to make 10 saves for the Lions, while David Abdo set aside 12 shots for the Wolverines, who hit the road to visit Hinsdale in a 5 p.m. first kick on Saturday.

The Lions will look to turn it back around back home Monday night, as they host a 5 p.m. first kick of their own with the Cuba-Rushford Rebels in town for a visit.

Fillmore 2, Genesee Valley/Belfast 1

FILLMORE — For the Eagles of Fillmore, Thursday’s contest against Genesee Valley/Belfast was a tale of two halves. In the opening 40 minutes, a game of catch up. But lessons were learned in time for the second half, when they flipped the script and turned the tables of Genesee Valley/Belfast.

Fillmore would find a way to tie the game before the first half came to a close, but it was a goal that built a ton of momentum to carry into the second half, as they spent the majority of time in the Genesee Valley/Belfast zone until they managed to collect the go-ahead goal they required to win the game, as Brent Zubikowski put away the goal with nearly 10 minutes left to spring the Eagles ahead in a 2-1 home win.

“Tonight was a game that we didn’t have it technically from the start, and unfortunately, GV/Belfast was ready to roll from the start physically,” said Eagles assistant coach Jordan Mullen. “They played simple soccer and won every tackle in the first half, and we were not good enough on the ball to neutralize that physical dominance early on. Our boys came out in the second half with a job to do, and we took over the game playing 30 straight minutes in their zone.”

Early on, Trent Scott opened the scoring for Genesee Valley/Belfast to record the game’s first lead, recording his second goal of the season off a Joe Ward helper from the back. But before the half found its way toward a close, Allegany County’s leading goal-scorer in Mitch Ward, in turn, collected a game-tying goal from a feed provided by Jack Cool for his 12th of the season, for the Eagles (4-2).

The goal saw a big burst of energy being formulated by the hosts in black and green, as they maintained the pressure against Genesee Valley/Belfast (4-2) until they were able to connect with the eventual game-winning goal from Zubikowski, as he knocked away an indirect kick that began with Eben Schilke with 15:38 remaining to play in regulation.

“Despite GV/Belfast being sound defensively, we scored a beauty to break the tie. Our guys really battled tonight, despite not playing a real clean game,” Mullen said. “But that’s the beauty of the game. You can always control your work rate and effort. And we managed to answer the bell to just find a way to win, and move forward.”

Fillmore would go on to outshoot Genesee Valley/Belfast by a narrow 7-6 count with Graham Cahill picking up the win in between the pipes, saving six shots. On the other side, Thai Norasethaporn also made six stops for Genesee Valley/Belfast.

Both teams are back on the field Saturday afternoon, as Fillmore hits the road to visit Ellicottville in an 11 a.m. first kick, while Genesee Valley/Belfast continues their road swing into Houghton Academy with a 1 p.m. contest.

Scio 3, Houghton Academy 1

HOUGHTON — After a 1-1 tie at the break with Houghton Academy, the Scio Tigers were able to find their way through a second half and toward their first win of the season, as they grabbed a pair of go-ahead goals to take the lead away and more to secure a 3-1 road victory on Thursday.

Houghton Academy was the first to get on the board with 13:17 left with Henry Sardina’s goal finding the back of the net off a feed provided by Anna Huizenga. From there, the Panthers (1-1) would remain at bay, as Scio scored the next three goals unanswered beginning with Greg Wesche tying the game at the half just two minutes later on his first of the season off a cross from Lazar Bulajic.

In the second half, Brendan Loucks gave Scio (1-4) the lead for good, capitalizing on his goal in the midst of a scrum in front of the Houghton Academy goal. Insurance was added later by Jordan White, who knocked in a pass from Max Morris toward the tail end of the contest to lock up the game.

Scio outshot Houghton Academy by a 15-6 count with Landon Arnold making two saves for the win, while Chris Habecker made nine saves for the Panthers, who remain at home to host Genesee Valley/Belfast in a 1 p.m. battle on Saturday.

The Tigers will look to keep it going right back on the field tonight in Friendship, with first kick beginning at 5 p.m.

Andover/Whitesville 3, Friendship 0

ANDOVER — A quick start in the first half was obtained by host Andover/Whitesville, as they grabbed their first win of the season in style over visiting Friendship, Thursday night by a 3-0 count.

After taking the lead off an Friendship own goal, Jayden Dix added to it for Andover/Whitesville (1-4), as he gave the team a 2-0 lead at the break behind penalty kick. Later on, Will Kent put the game way insurmountably with a clean redirection in front of the Golden Eagles (0-6) cage.

In all, both Friendship and Andover/Whitesville recorded 10 shots on goal, with Landon Ordway making all 10 stops to record his first shutout on the season. Hunter Hill made seven saves for the Golden Eagles, who head back home and return to action tonight with a 5 p.m. battle against Scio.
