Lady Lions fight back late to tie game, but Hollidaysburg provides clutch 6th inning to swipe away 4-2 win; team finishes 3-1 in Spring Break road trip
HOLLIDAYSBURG, Pa. — On the way back home from their week-long trip to Virginia, the Lady Lions of Wellsville made one more pit stop. Around four hours away, one more game was left on the slate before their road trip officially came to its close.
Like the previous night against Western Albemarle, the Lady Lions were taken the distance once more in yet another exciting, thrilling battle to the finish. It was the clutch hitting that helped them out of the jam in their win in their Virginia finale 24 hours ago.
But this time, the clutch offense helped Hollidaysburg out of a big jam in the sixth. After the Lady Lions tied the game in the top half, the hosts responded in the bottom half to close the game out, scoring two big runs to take the lead once again for good to earn a close 4-2 win to hand Wellsville their first and only loss in their road trip.
“Hollidaysburg had a very good pitcher that threw with good velocity, and hit her spots. Makenzie matched her pitch for pitch, and it was a back and forth game,” said Lady Lions coach Matt Burke. “I’m proud of the way our kids battled and competed. We were down late, and we battled back to tie the game. There’s no quit in this team, and overall, I’m very happy with our southern trip.”
The defensive battle raged through the opening stages of the early evening in Pennsylvania with each team exchanging two scoreless frames before the Lady Lions (7-2) were able to get on the board first behind some help in the third inning, as Marley Adams blasted a triple which saw her come in to score later off of Emma Dunaway’s RBI single to break the ice.
Hollidaysburg, an inning later, was able to take the lead away from Wellsville by scratching two runs across themselves for a 2-1 lead after four innings of play. But not long after, the Lady Lions received the lead back behind the guidance of Lindsey Stuck and Natalie Adams towards the bottom of their lineup, as they each traded places at second base with back-to-back doubles, with Adams driving in Stuck to tie the game at two.
But in the bottom half, the response by Hollidaysburg was quick, as they came up with their two final runs in perhaps the most clutch of times, going ahead of Wellsville one final time to ensure their victory at the end of the night.
Despite the loss, Makenzie Cowburn provided a solid outing from within the circle, striking out seven and walking three in her six-hitter. Cowburn would also help Wellsville’s cause on offense with two hits, while Natalie Adams finished with two. The team went on to record eight hits in all.
The Lady Lions will resume play on Monday back on the road, as they head to Addison to visit the Lady Knights in a 5 p.m. first pitch.
