Tuesday Roundup: Trailing to Portville, Lady Lions rally back to force and win in overtime; Scio boys edge out Cuba-Rushford at home

WELLSVILLE — Tuesday marked a special day for one of Wellsville’s sprouting stars this season, as Marley Adams put together a clutch performance down the stretch for the Lady Lions on her birthday.

They would find themselves in a small five-point deficit closing in on the last minute regulation against the visiting Lady Panthers of Portville. She nailed a big three-pointer to narrow the Portville lead to a pair before some additional help on special teams saw them force overtime.

In the free basketball period, Adams stepped up one more time to help Wellsville catapult ahead for good with another clutch three, finishing with 20 game-high points in the team’s 43-39 home win.

“Marley’s quiet and she goes about her business,” Lady Lions coach Michelle Alvord said. “She had clutch shots in clutch situations, and it’s really going to help build her confidence from here. The girls finished the game. For us, it’s a great bounce back from Hornell in an uncharacteristic game. Our offense was slow at times. Along with Marley, Emily Costello didn’t really get rattled, she played a great floor game. This is a big win for us, especially with Portville coming into this game having lost only twice.”

The Lady Lions (12-4) had to battle their way from behind early in the first quarter, as Portville garnered the 12-9 lead heading into the second. The defense would kick into gear to pull ahead, as Adams scored seven of the team’s 12 points in the midst of their 12-6 run to end the first half on a high note, leading by three.

In the third quarter, it was vice versa for the Lady Panthers, as they held Wellsville in check with just three baskets from the field to pull ahead by one after another narrow outscoring. But in the last eight minute period, the Lady Lions managed to force overtime after falling behind by five, as Adams hit a three-point to close the gap, allowing Emily Robbins to get fouled on her way to the basket, as she nailed a pair of free throws with 32 seconds left to tie the game at 35.

In extra time, it was on Adams again to deliver the goods, as she overtook a 37-35 lead by Portville with her final three-pointer to put the Lady Lions back ahead for good behind an 8-4 run.

Finishing behind Adams in the scorebook for Wellsville was Costello, who finished with eight points, pairing them with six rebounds and four steals. Regan Marsh chipped in with seven points and seven rebounds, while Robbins had four points total.

Prior to the varsity contest, the Lady Lions JV squad came away victorious over Portville with a 39-23 victory. Leading the offense for the hosts was Delaney Wonderling, who posted a team-high 12 points.

Next on the docket for the Lady Lions is a long road trip to the Finger Lakes region on Thursday, as they prepare for a 7:30 p.m. road contest against the Marcus Whitman Lady Wildcats.

“They have a great record, and I’ve seen them play already. We have to play well to match their intensity,” said Alvord. “I like our chances against them, and coming off a game like this, it will help tremendously. They have size, but we should be able to run the floor pretty smoothly.”

BOYS BASKETBALL

Scio 55, Cuba-Rushford 50

SCIO — The goal for the Scio Tigers, after falling to a five-point defeat to the hands of Jasper-Troupsburg at the Barkley Showcase, was to bounce back in a big way. They had a chance to do that back home on Tuesday, with visiting Cuba-Rushford in town for their first game in 17 days.

There were very narrow outscorings for each team across all four quarters, but a five-point buffer zone was the end result, as the Tigers managed to do just enough through the start of each half to squeeze past the Rebels with a 55-50 victory.

“It was a big bounce back game for us after the J-T loss,” Tigers coach Dillon McFall said. “That was a bit of a wake-up call for us, and we came out with great energy tonight. We fixed a few mistakes, and we managed to come away with the win. We tidied up our defense, and we didn’t shoot very well from outside. We just kept grinding, and it was one of those games. This was a great league win.”

The Tigers (10-2) defense was solid all night long on the floor, as they held all but one Cuba-Rushford shooter to single digits on offense. Including one of the leading scorers for the Rebels in Andrew Clement, who finished with just three points in the game.

“We knew Clement coming in was one of their top two guys,” said McFall. “He’s knocked down quite a few shots, but kudos to the guys, they held him in check. We held (Grady) McCumiskey pretty low too. It was much better of an effort on our part than our game on Saturday. We were all disappointed with that, but the intensity that we had in the beginning helped us out.”

Cam Loucks led all scorers on the floor for Scio with a game-high 21 points to go with 14 boards and five assists. Brendan Graves tallied 18 points of his own, adding five rebounds and three assists. Carl Finnemore assisted in the glass game with 10 rebounds, while Jake D’Arcy dished out five assists.

On Cuba-Rushford’s (3-6) side, Grady McCumiskey led the way with 14 team-leading points. Joey Jablonski pitched in nine points, while Ethan Brooks had seven.

The Tigers return to action Thursday night on the road, as they visit Whitesville for a 7:30 p.m. contest. On Friday, the Rebels will continue their road swing with a stop at Bolivar-Richburg for their first of two meetings, also at 7:30 p.m.
