Tuesday Roundup: Lady Lions advance to next round of B2 Sectionals, roll past Whitman with 4-1 win; Fillmore girls win 7th straight D1 County title with shutout of GV/Belfast

WELLSVILLE — The chase for glory in the Sectional Finals began with day one right here in Wellsville on an overcast Tuesday evening, as the Lady Lions, who are seeded sixth overall, began their journey with a first round matchup against No. 11 Marcus Whitman.

With the second singles and both doubles matches taking center stage first, it was a chance for the Lady Lions to get the start they wanted to have. They would go on to do just that, as they swept all three matches to clinch match victory with two more matches to go, splitting with Marcus Whitman to end the night with a 4-1 win over the visiting Lady Wildcats to advance into the Class B2 Quarterfinal round.

The Lady Lions (7-3) looked to the doubles department to get the match victory up and rolling right away, garnering a sweep of the matches. Although Wellsville was able to take it in straight sets, the wins were not easy, as the teams of Caitlin Bittel and Hanna Miles, and Kelsey Seely and McKenna Wonderling had to weave their way through some ups and downs to record their wins, with Bittel and Miles coming away victorious with a 6-3, 6-3 win at first doubles, and a 6-4, 6-4 win at second for Seely and Wonderling.

On the singles side, Meagan Riley helped issue a match win for Wellsville at second singles, recording the 6-0, 6-3 win. Marcus Whitman would go on to score two singles match wins for themselves, as Carina Kling fell at first singles, while Samantha Bidzerkowny after a hard-fought third singles match to end the night.

GIRLS SOCCER

Fillmore 5, Genesee Valley/Belfast 0

BELMONT — In recent memory, the upper division in Allegany County has been ruled by the Fillmore Lady Eagles, who have found their way out on top for the last six seasons in a row. On a misty Tuesday evening on the road, a chance to make it seven straight arrived.

A win over host Genesee Valley/Belfast would send them over the top. All that was needed was a fast start on the offense. They would get that in the form of chances early on, but no scores. But eventually all of the mounting pressure soon boiled over, and the goal-scoring became persistent.

For the seventh straight year, Fillmore has officially put a bow on the Division I championship in Allegany County League play, as they scored a pair of their three first half goals in a span of 34 seconds to get the start they wanted to have to set the tone for the remainder of the game, adding two more scores in the second half to wrap up a 5-0 shutout of the Lady JagDogs.

The Lady Eagles (12-0) stayed one step ahead of Genesee Valley/Belfast across the entire first half to record the start they wanted, holding the hosts in green and white to a single shot in the first 40 minutes while capitalizing on a 3-0 lead back the other way, with Hope Russell and Zoe Beardsley recording back-to-back goals in 34 seconds to establish a two-goal lead, with Russell finding the back of the net on the first of her two netters off a pass from Malory DeRock, while Beardsley lofted a shot from just outside the 18 from a pass by Emily Krzeminski to find the net.

The lead grew to three later on with 12:12 left until the break, as Sophia Templeton scored the first of her two goals from the right wing after taking a beautiful fed ball from Beardsley on the other side of the field, streaking in to knock her shot to the opposite post to finish the play.

Both Russell and Templeton would add their final goals in the last 40 minute session to branch out Fillmore’s lead permanently, with Templeton scoring just over two minutes after the opening kick, while Russell struck with her last with 12:12 left in the game. Grace Russell would record both assists along the way.

Fillmore outshot Genesee Valley/Belfast (7-4) by a 12-4 count, with Preslee Miller and Alex Thur combining to make three stops in net, with Miller recording the shutout. On the other end, Ashley Burrows and Angel Jimerson recorded five saves for Genesee Valley/Belfast.

Both teams will return to the field Thursday night in a pair of 7 p.m. contests, as Fillmore heads back home to host Senior Night festivities with Friendship/Scio in town, while Genesee Valley/Belfast looks to rebound over the road, visiting last season’s Class D1 Champion — Arkport/Canaseraga.

Bolivar-Richburg 2, Wellsville 1

WELLSVILLE — It was Senior Night in the Lion’s Den on Tuesday, and it was a night that was taken over by visiting Bolivar-Richburg, as the Lady Wolverines spoiled the evening for the host Lady Lions behind a season-sweeping victory on the road, edging their way toward victory by a 2-1 count.

After a scoreless tie was reached after the first half of play, Bolivar-Richburg (6-5) became the first team to strike in the final session of play, garnering the first lead of the night with a pair of goals netted by both Madigan and McKinlee Harris in a span of six minutes to take a 2-0 lead.

Now trailing by a pair, the deficit was knocked back down to one not long after the second goal by the Lady Wolverines, as Jaylynn Mess put away the lone goal the Lady Lions (4-8) would score off a pass from Emily Costello near the midway mark.

The Lady Wolverines would hold onto victory and earn the season sweep of the Lady Lions, as they provided a 13-7 outshooting in the shots department to do so. In goal, Madison Carney made six saves to earn the win.

On the opposite side, Makenna Dunbar put a stop to 11 shots for the Lady Lions.

Both teams are back on the field Thursday evening on the road, as Bolivar-Richburg looks to continue their winning ways with a visit to Andover to take on host Andover/Whitesville in a 6 p.m. first kick, while Wellsville heads out to visit Cuba-Rushford in a 5 p.m. contest of their own.

Andover/Whitesville 4, Friendship/Scio 0

SCIO — After scoring an early 1-0 lead on host Friendship/Scio, Andover/Whitesville used the icebreaker as a momentum push towards the second half. When the break concluded, a flood of goals came soon after, as they scored three more in the last 40 minutes, two in a span of four minutes, to pull away towards a 4-0 shutout over the road, Tuesday night.

“The girls did some really good things tonight, and we were pleased with the performance,” said Andover/Whitesville co-coach Aaron Rawady. “We have become more disciplined in our decision making, which is important to how we want to play. We went through a stretch recently where we struggled to defend and score. But we have done better in those areas the past couple of games. Hopefully we can continue this against a tough B-R team coming up.”

Graci Lewis-Ellison was responsible for giving Andover/Whitesville (6-6) the early 1-0 lead at the end of the first half, as she recorded her first career Varsity goal off a feed provided by Gabby Terhune to put away the opening goal. It was a lead the team continued to hold throughout the second half, as they added to it just past the midway mark with the help of both Terhune and Kennedy Bledsoe.

Bledsoe was the first to score in the second half at the 18:41 mark, branching Andover/Whitesville’s lead to a pair after connecting with Zoey Lee from the back to finish off the play. Terhune then added a goal of her own to complete her three-point evening, finding the back of the net off a pass provided by Bledsoe to do so.

The scoring was finished off with 6:47 remaining on the clock when Ava Grice found Lee in the wing, making her way down the field to record her team-leading 10th goal of the season. In all, Andover/Whitesville collected 18 total shots while allowing four the other way on defense. All four stops were made by Brynn Scholl to record the shutout between the posts.

In goal for Friendship/Scio (3-8-1), Nevaeh Ross made 14 stops.

Both teams are back in action Thursday night, as Andover/Whitesville heads back home to host a 6 p.m. contest with Bolivar-Richburg in Andover, while Friendship/Scio looks to regroup over the road in a 7 p.m. battle against undefeated Fillmore.

BOYS SOCCER

Scio 3, Jasper-Troupsburg 2 (F-OT)

SCIO — Overtime is a perk of the game that has not treated the Scio Tigers too kindly this season. Out of their 10 games played, nearly half of them needed extra time to complete. Scio has not come away victorious in any game that has went the extra distance.

That changed on Tuesday.

In their fourth overtime game of the season, the Tigers made sure it was their stake to claim. After visiting Jasper-Troupsburg tied the game at two heading in, both teams battled through thick and thin in the first overtime. But it would come to an end rather quickly in the final 10 minute session, as Ethan Davenport put away the game-winner to give Scio their fifth win in the last seven by a 3-2 count over the Wildcats.

“I don’t think we should have been in overtime. We gave up two of our weaker goals this season, but we played much better defensively after the 30 minute mark of the second half,” Tigers coach Dillon McFall said. “We have to do a little better of a job with our halfback play, and winning the ball. It’s a little inconsistent, but hopefully we can find a way to pick it back up. I have to give our guys credit, this is our fourth overtime game this year. We haven’t won one of these games until now. We’re figuring out a way to win, which is a bonus.”

The Tigers (5-5-1) would go on to score a 2-1 lead at the end of the first half before Davenport put an end to the night with his game-winning capper, as Jordan White provided a five-point evening consisting of both of the team’s goals in the first half, with his opener coming unassisted, and his next off an assist provided by Davenport.

After the Wildcats found a way to tie the game up in the second half, extra sessions were now in play. And with just 7:37 left on the clock in double overtime, Davenport found the back of the net off of White’s assist at center to end the game with the team’s 18th and final shot. In all, Scio outshot Jasper-Troupsburg by an 18-7 count, with Landon Arnold making three stops to preserve the win.

The Tigers will have a quick turnaround back on their home field tonight in another 7 p.m. contest under the lights, as they play host to incoming Houghton Academy.

Hinsdale 2, Genesee Valley/Belfast 1

BELFAST — If there a person that Hinsdale calls upon to help fire up their offense all season long, it has been Tucker Schwartz. The Bobcats leading goal scorer has been at the forefront of the team’s very successful season thus far, holding Class D2’s top seed with nearly two weeks to go before Sectionals begin.

Schwartz once again answered the call in a quick turnaround for Hinsdale. After being shutout by Fillmore the previous night, the Bobcats bounced right back into the win column over the road behind a pair of goals, including the go-ahead in the second half to squeeze their way past host Genesee Valley/Belfast with a 2-1 victory on Tuesday.

Both teams would lock horns at the end of the first half, with Matt Weaver recording Genesee Valley/Belfast’s (8-4) lone goal in the first half to match Schwartz’s first for the Bobcats (8-2-1). Further statistics were not made available upon publication.

Both teams are back on the field tonight with quick turnarounds, as Hinsdale looks to continue finding the win column with a 5 p.m. visit to Cuba-Rushford, while Genesee Valley/Belfast looks for a big bounce back with a 7 p.m. contest right back in Belfast against red hot Fillmore.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Fillmore 3, Cuba-Rushford 0

FILLMORE — The Lady Eagles of Fillmore continue to roll along on the volleyball court, as they picked up their third win in the last four games, shelling out three straight victories to end the night with a sweeping victory of visiting Cuba-Rushford on Tuesday, taking the 25-11, 25-17, 25-17 decision.

Charging the offensive attack for the Lady Eagles (7-3) once more was Emma Cole, who was relentless with a game-high 14 kills to go with four aces, and two blocks. Jadyn Mucher added in four more kills of her own, pairing them with two aces. Setter Zoe Hubbard dished out 15 assists to go with two aces, while Selena Leonard had an assist of her own to add in.

The Lady Rebels (2-5) were led by Brianna Green, who recorded a team-high eight digs on defense to go with seven kills and two aces. Ella Jaffe added in four digs of her own to pair with three aces and two blocks, while setter Quincy Tyler had eight assists at the net, chipping in three kills, two digs and a block of her own to further the cause.

Fillmore will now take aim at potentially their fourth win in the last five when they return to The Rock on Friday to host a 6 p.m. first serve against red hot Houghton Academy, winners of six straight, while Cuba-Rushford looks to rebound back over the road tonight with a 7 p.m. contest in Hinsdale.
