Tuesday Roundup: Fillmore’s Hannah Roeske becomes 4th County player to cross millennium mark this year in team’s regular season finale win vs. Hinsdale
FILLMORE — Senior Night can be a dark night for some coaches, but at the same time, it’s a night of celebration. That night came on Tuesday for Fillmore head coach Tom Parks, when he penned, and delivered a heartfelt, emotional tribute to the six seniors he has come to know since they were little basketballers.
For the very last time in their high school careers, Riley Voss, Hannah Roeske, Erin Mawn, Carlee Miller, Tayler Bedow and Abby Hatch have played their final regular season game on their home floor with the Hinsdale Lady Bobcats in town to close out the regular season.
They have all had a hand in delivering a Section V, Class D1 girls basketball title last season at Letchworth, when they defeated Avoca/Prattsburgh to reign a firestorm of glory to the school with their first ever championship for the program. With nearly the same exact same group from last year back on the court for one last ride, Fillmore has returned to the conversation circle again in Class D1 to do even more damage on their quest toward back-to-back titles.
But ever so quietly since the start of her career, and even through this year’s season-long trek, one senior has been working her absolute hardest toward history. That senior was Roeske, and all of it paid off with perhaps one of the biggest lay-ups in her journey.
Needing just nine points to join Fillmore’s elite pantheon of basketball titans, it required just eight minutes and a little bit of change for the Lady Eagles senior to make her Senior Night a memorable one. She punched her ticket to the school’s 1,000 point club by gathering up a pass given to her by Erin Mawn from outside, and taking two dribbles around the Hinsdale defense before taking care the millennium mark-making basket underneath to become Fillmore’s 11th all-time member, and the first girls basketball player in 11 seasons to make their way into the history books in the team’s 55-30 win over the Lady Bobcats inside The Rock.
“We’re all really thrilled for her. For Hannah, this was obviously a big and personal accomplishment for her. It’s a reward for the time she puts into this game, and the hours she’s spent to improve over the last four years,” said Parks. “Getting to 1,000 career points so quietly, it took her all the way until the last regular season game of her career to do it. It’s a reflection of her ability to play the team game that we have here. We’ve never leaned on her to score all of our points, and she’s never taken more than 19 total attempts in a game, ever. She finds her teammates to make things happen, and with it, it came with a big reward.”
Roeske is the first Lady Eagle to earn her membership into the 1,000 point club since the 2008-09 season, when Susie Black was the last to accomplish the same feat in her senior season, finishing her career with 1,154 total points.
Her basket was recorded just 20 seconds into the second quarter, as the team managed to get off on a red hot start of Hinsdale beforehand, in the opening quarter of play. Carlee Miller ignited the offensive fire for the Lady Eagles with nine of her 11 points coming with a full head of steam in the opening quarter. From there, Roeske netted five of the nine points she needed on a long three-pointer, and breakaway lay-in off a Hinsdale (14-5) turnover.
The Lady Eagles would finish the first quarter with a 14-5 run after a 4-4 tie to go up by nine.
In the second quarter, the momentum carried over for the Lady Eagles with a plethora of shots being capitalized off multiple missed opportunities, and turnovers by the Lady Bobcats. A number of Lady Eagles were involved in formulating another big jaunt on offense, on the court and off the bench, to gain more distance on Hinsdale heading into the half by wrapping up shop with a 13-3 run to lead 31-12 heading into the locker room.
The lead ultimately remained in Fillmore’s favor for the rest of the game, using one more big run coming back out for the second half to pull away permanently, as they coasted by with a 13-5 run to keep their double digit advantage in tact.
“It was a good game with all the extra curriculars going on, and the girls showed they were ready to play tonight. It’s a great way to end the season on a good note, and hopefully we can dig right into the Sectional season, and make a big run out of it.” said Parks.
Roeske led all scorers on the floor with a game-high 18 points for Fillmore, as she concluded the regular season with 1,009 career points heading into Sectionals. Emma Cole powered the inside game with 14 more points, completing a double-double along the way with 12 rebounds off the glass. Erin Mawn pitched in with a pair of threes for six points, while Riley Voss helped out the special teams front with five assists.
After the game, Parks offered his recognition to all six seniors, all of which fell in love with the game of basketball instantly.
“When this group of kids were in fourth grade, I had this vision of them playing basketball for me,” he said. “I was hoping they would take to it, and they did, and a whole lot more. They fell in love with this game instantly. They can’t get enough of it. I’ve been working with them since they were 10 years old, and I’m super happy with all they’ve been able to do for this program. We’ve become one big family over the years, and tonight is a tough night. But at the same time, it’s a special night to honor everything they have done.”
Hinsdale was charged by Kayla Brooks, who knocked down a trio of three-pointers for nine team-high points. Kaitlynn Roberson helped the cause with seven points, while Lindsey Veno had six. The Lady Bobcats will end their season with one more road game in Scio this evening at 6 p.m.
The regular season is over for the Lady Eagles of Fillmore, as they officially lock up Class D1’s top seed in the Sectional playoffs with an overall record of 18-2.
Sectional seeding across the Section V front will begin as soon as this weekend, with an official release planned for Sunday.

Wellsville 37, Bolivar-Richburg 24
BOLIVAR — The Lady Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg were going step by step with Wellsville through much of the first half, but then the Lady Lions created a big opening behind their three-point game toward the tail end of the half, as Marley Adams and Emily Costello launched back-to-back threes to extend their lead from three to nine going into the half to carry the momentum along with it to pull away toward a 37-24 road win on Tuesday.
“They play very good defense, and they locked Aliyah (Cole) down big time,” said Lady Wolverines coach Justin Thomas. “It started off super slow, and then we found a way to bring it down to three. Then, they hit a pair of three-pointers at the end of the first half, and that proved to be a big difference. They carried the momentum into the second half, and they controlled the game. Despite it, we managed to hang around against a team that should make a deep run in the Bs.”
The Wellsville defense did its job all game long, as they held down their most productive asset — the inside game guided by Bolivar-Richburg’s leading scorer, Aliyah Cole, as she was held to a season-low three points. It was a bit of a slow start at first on both sides, but the Lady Lions got out to a 7-2 early lead. Despite the five-point lead, it was just the beginning for the visitors in black and orange.
In the second quarter, the Lady Wolverines managed to narrow the gap down to within three of the Lady Lions at one point, as the three-point game began to flare up with three of their four total shots from downtown found the landing strip in the second quarter, with Adams and Costello each netting one in crunch time to branch out the Wellsville lead to nine at the half.
The balance of power would remain in Wellsville’s favor for the remainder of the game, as their newly established 19-10 lead grew in a big way with one last 12 point card to play in the third quarter to go up by 20 entering the last eight minutes, ultimately securing the season-ending victory.
Adams was in control of a well-balanced Lady Lions offense for the majority of the night, sinking a game-high 10 points. Kaylee Coleman added eight points to help power the inside game, while Jaylynn Mess had five points.
The Lady Wolverines were led by Jianna Nix, who tallied a team-high six points. Kelsey Pacer added five points herself, while McKinlee and Madigan Harris each had four points. On special teams, Cole and Pacer each recorded 10 rebounds off the glass.
