Tuesday Roundup: Fillmore outlasts Holland in State-ranked clash; Lady Panthers roll past Brad/Ham behind 2nd half

FILLMORE — There was a bit of optimism around The Rock when the Fillmore Eagles took their home floor for their first official game of the new decade. For Holland, Tuesday’s game was their second in four days. For Fillmore — their first game in nearly three weeks.

It is understandable that when the holiday break had arrived and departed, the fear of basketball rust would still be attached to all teams returning to action after an extended period of time. That included an Eagles team that restarted their search to find the win column for the sixth time in their first seven games.

In a battle of State-ranked teams within the Class D bracket, both the Dutchmen and Eagles put on a display of defense while capitalizing on a few runs worth of offense in the early-going. When the first half ticked down, Fillmore fought their way back into the lead at halftime. In the second half, it was the offenses turn to shine.

Both teams had a massive run that persisted through an entire quarter’s worth of play. In the end, the Eagles got the one that mattered most, as they saw Will Valentine break out the buckets with half of his 18 game-high points coming within the last eight minutes to assist in assembling together Fillmore’s biggest frame of the night — a 22-13 run of Holland to pull ahead toward their fourth straight win by a 57-52 count.

“It was a great matchup between two very similar teams, in terms of skill and athleticism,” Eagles coach Randy Crouch said. “Tobias Webb was brilliant guarding the point all night, and we played pretty sound defense along with it. We just struggled to score, and teams are really focused in taking Luke (Cole) out of our game plan. We’ve been looking for guys to provide some scoring, and down the stretch, Tobias and Levi (Webb) both hit some big threes, and Mason (Cool) made some big plays behind them.”

A seldom amount of shots from the field were collected between both squads in the first six minutes of the first quarter, a quarter which saw a lot of teeter-totter offense tag along with a strong amount of defense. Holland and Fillmore battled their way to a pair of ties within the timeframe, but Fillmore (6-1) saw their first glimpse at a lead when Luke Cole picked up the team’s first three-pointer to jumpstart a quick 5-0 run of the Dutchmen.

In the last two minutes of the period, the Dutchmen countered right back with some inside work of their own, taking advantage of some miscues and loose boards, finishing up by scoring the last six points for an 11-10 lead entering the second.

Fillmore would go on to make another run through the second quarter, as the defensive back-and-forth pace settled right back into the next eight minute session. The Eagles found an opening just over five minutes in with Dylan Valentine nailing a three-pointer as a part of the team’s 7-0 scoreless stretch to take a six-point lead.

Holland would go on to close out the half with a scoreless run themselves with under two minutes left to play, going up on top for a moment before the hosts in white and green took the lead back behind a big Levi Webb three-pointer that gave them a 27-24 lead.

The Dutchmen would navigate their way toward a big third quarter break out on offense, holding Fillmore in check with a 15-8 run that saw their lead grow to as big as seven at one point, ultimately taking the narrow lead into the last eight minutes, where Will Valentine saved his best efforts for last, helping grow a 22-point quarter behind some big shots down the stretch to finish the game on top, thanks to the team’s 22-13 fourth quarter run.

“Will took over inside and had some tough finishes to close it out in the final minutes,” Crouch said. “We initially fell behind by seven at one point, but Luke was huge off the glass when we needed him to be. Tonight was a good test for us to build from.”

Valentine helped Cole in the rebound game with seven boards. As for Cole, he finished with 13 points to go with his game-high 18 boards, five assists, three steals and three blocks. Tobias Webb concluded with 11 points, while Levi Webb recorded seven.

Fillmore will continue their hot start to 2020 on Thursday, as they prepare to host the 6-1 Scio Tigers for a 7:30 p.m. contest.

Scio 52, Bolivar-Richburg 42

SCIO — Even though a hot first half cooled off quickly upon their return to the court, the host Scio Tigers made sure they stayed in the driver’s seat the entire time, as they outscored visiting Bolivar-Richburg with a 35-21 lead at the break to set up what came to be a 52-42 victory to start 2020 on a good note, Tuesday night.

“We didn’t play very well tonight. For us, it’s the first time all year that we haven’t really had any shots fall,” Tigers coach Dillon McFall said. “I was telling the guys that it’s always good to find a way to win an ugly game, rather than to lose it. But we’re happy, and a win is a win. We’re on to Fillmore.”

Both teams battled their way through a tight first quarter early on, with Scio (6-1) coming out with the edge with a 17-11 outscoring in their hands. In the second, the same story panned out as the Tigers went into the locker room with a 14-point advantage. As both teams returned for the second half, the Wolverines (4-5) used their defense as their top asset to hold the opposing offense to single digits for the remainder of the game. It allowed them to cut the lead down, but it was not enough in the end.

Cam Loucks led the way for Scio with a game-high 22 points to go with 13 rebounds, completing his double-double. Brendan Graves chipped in with 13 points of his own to go with seven assists. Carl Finnemore tallied 10 points, while Jake D’Arcy rounded off the Tigers scoresheet with the final seven.

Bolivar-Richburg’s offense was paced by a 13-point evening from Landon Danaher. Camden MacDonell followed closely behind with 11 points of his own, while Brayden Ellis had seven to chip in.

Both teams are back in action over the road on Thursday at 7:30 p.m, as Scio pays a visit to red hot Fillmore, and Bolivar-Richburg travels to Genesee Valley.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Andover 52, Bradford/Hammondsport 33

ANDOVER — After being out of action since their 57-49 loss to the hands of Avoca/Prattsburgh back on December 17, it took a little while for the Andover Lady Panthers to jumpstart their system of operations again after the long winter break.

That saw Bradford/Hammondsport hang around in the first half, garnering a lead that did not grow any larger than four when both teams went off to the locker room at halftime. When the next half came around however, the Lady Panthers pushed the chips to the center of the table.

Emily Wahl and Kelsie Niedermaier became a dynamic duo on the hardwood for Andover, as their second half performances blew the floodgates open with two enormous runs to pull away from Bradford/Hammondsport with a 52-33 victory, Tuesday night.

“The first half, we definitely looked like we hadn’t played in two weeks,” Lady Panthers coach Jake Bannerman said. “But in the second half, we did a nice job making our adjustments. The girls did a nice job taking the pressure off of Emily. Kelsie was an absolute force out there, and if she plays like that the rest of the season, it will make us tough to play against in Sectionals.”

Despite the slow start to the game, Andover (5-2) was able to get a first half lead to build upon, increasing it to two possessions after a narrow 16-13 outscoring of the Lady Lakers to give them a four-point advantage. Then, Wahl and Niedermaier took over the show for the hosts in white and purple, as they kicked into gear a game-changing 12-4 third quarter run that kept them out front for good.

In the final eight minutes, Wahl put the finishing touches of the victory by scoring nine of the team’s 15 points within the frame to finish with a game-high 22 points. Niedermaier finished with a 15-point, 18-rebound double-double, while Tess Spangenburg had eight points to add.

Andover will look to build on their victory when they return onto their home floor Thursday, welcoming in the Cuba-Rushford Lady Rebels for a 7:30 p.m. visit.

BELMONT — Cuba-Rushford and Genesee Valley fought their way through a first quarter that saw them come out with a 12-12 tie on the scoreboard, Tuesday evening.

In the second quarter, Kate Howe and Ella Jaffe turned up the jets on a 15-7 Lady Rebels run, combining to record 10 of the team’s 15 points within that stretch to build up an eventual 54-38 victory over the host Lady Jaguars of Genesee Valley

To seal the team’s lead permanently, Cuba-Rushford (3-5) continued their ways into the third quarter, posting their largest frame with a 19-13 outscoring of Genesee Valley to branch out their double digit lead even further. Howe and Sarah Cole both led the charge by combining for 10 of the team’s 19 in all.

“It was nice to bounce back after a couple of tough games against Canisteo-Greenwood. Every girl on our team stepped up, and played a big role for us tonight.” said Lady Rebels coach Aaron Wight.

As for the Lady Jaguars (2-7), Emera Aquila was one of three scorers that eclipsed double digits, tallying a team-high 13 points. Fillmore 54, Alfred-Almond 30

ALMOND — The Fillmore defense held the Alfred-Almond offense in check all throughout the night on Tuesday, as the offense, behind a massive season-high performance from senior Hannah Roeske, provided two separate runs to branch out their lead insurmountably to come away triumphant with a 54-30 victory over host Alfred-Almond.

“It was a little concerning at first with the rust, but at times, the rush that we had did show,” said Fillmore coach Tom Parks. “The girls played with a lot of energy, and we looked good. It wasn’t consistent through all four quarters, but being out of action as long as we have, it’s expected.”

Roeske powered the Fillmore offense in a big way, sinking a season-high 23 points with the majority of them all coming from within the arc, as well as a 4-for-7 outing at the stripe. Emma Cole continues to impress off the bench for the team in black and green, netting nine points. Carlee Miller matched Cole’s total with nine points of her own to go with five steals and four assists. Leading the glass game was Riley Voss, who had a team-leading seven rebounds.

Fillmore will now hop on the bus Thursday evening for a big Allegany County Division I clash with the Lady Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg. Tip-off is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start.

“We head out there on Thursday. Bolivar’s off to a great start, and I feel great for a great coach in Justin (Thomas) and his program. The girls over there are playing really well, and we’re ready for the battle against them.”

Whitesville 63, Scio 13

WHITESVILLE — The first quarter was all the Lady Jays of Whitesville needed to make their mark on Tuesday, as they held visiting Scio to just four shots from the field, posting a 23-0 shutout in the opening eight minutes to set the tone on a 63-13 home win over the Lady Tigers in their return to action after nearly three weeks.

“It was nice to be able to get back to game action after almost 20 days since our last outing. We did some good things tonight, and I really liked our effort,” Lady Jays coach Aaron Rawady said. “But there was definitely some rust we needed to knock off. We’ll get back inside the gym tomorrow, and look to clean up some mistakes to get ready for an extremely tough Bolivar-Richburg team next week.”

Vanessa Hall and Kate Pensyl led the Whitesville (5-2) offense to big things on the hardwood, with Hall leading the way with a game-high 21 points. Pensyl followed with 15 points of her own. Serina Button chipped in with eight points, while Chelsie Reisman had five.

Houghton Academy 29, Belfast 27

BELFAST — It all started off on the right foot for the Belfast Lady Bulldogs on their home floor, Tuesday evening.

The defense held visiting Houghton Academy to just seven points in the first half to take the lead entering the break, but the Lady Panthers came into the second half rejuvenated, flipping the script on their counterpart with their two biggest efforts on offense to take the lead away for good, edging past the Lady Bulldogs with a narrow 29-27 victory.

“We are inching our way to becoming better. We’ve made some big leaps and strides, and as soon as the youth turns into needed experience, we can be tough on teams,” Lady Bulldogs coach Jimmy Schneider said. “All through games, we can’t seem to get toward that 32 minute mark. There’s going to be a day where we work as hard as we can, and teams will not like playing against us. I’m looking forward to that day.”

A pair of eight-point quarters in the first half kicked off Belfast’s (0-7) hot start, as they used an equal balance of defense to hold Houghton Academy to a single point in the first eight minutes before they cut the lead down to nine at the end of the half.

The second half became a different story for the Lady Panthers (3-4), saving their offense in the later stages to propel past the Lady Bulldogs with a 12-4 fourth quarter run, a 22-11 half-turning run in all that allowed them to seal the come-from-behind victory.

Jessica Prentice played a big role in Houghton Academy’s success, garnering a game-high 19 points out of the team’s 29 in all. Sarah Retz added nine points of her own, while Emily Tankeh had the last point from the charity stripe.

For Belfast, it was Kaitlin Sadler, Alicia Borden, and Emma Sullivan that all led the way through a balanced offensive night, as they recorded six points each. Mary Hamer chipped in with four points.

The Lady Panthers will hit the road once more Thursday night, as they visit the Scio Lady Tigers for a 6 p.m. contest. On Monday, Belfast will hit the road, as their search for their first win continues inside the Wighthouse at Cuba-Rushford for a 6 p.m. tip-off.
