Tuesday Roundup: Andover strikes with hot iron, compiles tenacious 1st half of play in home win over Whitesville; Wellsville boys marred by Northstar’s three-point game on the road
ANDOVER — Things started out pretty slowly for both Whitesville and Andover in their final regular season meeting of the season on Tuesday. With the Lady Jays getting the first decision when the last met at the end of January, it shaped up to be a much different battle this time around.
With both teams netting their first baskets nearing the three minute mark of the opening quarter, it was only the beginning for a team to take off running. That team was the Lady Panthers, as they found their groove in the back half of the first with a scoreless run of Whitesville, before carrying the momentum into the second with another offensive run to take the lead permanently with a 49-27 victory over the Lady Jays.
“It was nice to continue playing well,” Lady Panthers coach Jake Bannerman said. “We played strongly last night at Cuba, and it was nice to not have a letdown with the quick turnaround. Whitesville took it to us the last time, but the girls came around this time and continued to play with a ton of confidence. It was a good team win for sure.”
After Kate Pensyl tallied Whitesville’s opening bucket, Andover (13-6) charged up a run that saw them break away toward a 14-2 run to end the first quarter with a double digit lead. All of the efforts were behind capitalizations on multiple turnovers caused by the Lady Jays in the offensive zone. In the second quarter, more of the same story, as the Lady Panthers continued to pinpoint the turnovers in the offensive zone to start the frame with eight consecutive points.
The scoreless drought was ended by Vanessa Hall for the Lady Jays (12-5), as she netted nine of the team’s 11 points in the first half, including five in the second quarter with a pair of shots at the line, and then a three-bomb that ended the team’s offensive shutout from the field with 2:30 left before the break.
In the second half, it gave the Lady Panthers a chance to continue putting the finishing touches on back-to-back victories to start the brand new week, as Wahl finished with a team-high 15 points to go with six rebounds and four steals. Kelsie Niedermaier helped tag-team the offensive effort with 14 points of her own along with 11 rebounds to complete a double-double, as well as five steals and three blocks. Tess Spangenburg had eight points.
Hall led all scorers for Whitesville with a team-high 15 points. Kennedy Bledsoe added in eight points, while Pensyl and Serina Button followed with the remaining four points combined on a pair of baskets inside.
Andover will host their final regular season home game Thursday night, as they welcome in the Bolivar-Richburg Lady Wolverines for Senior Night at 7:30 p.m. As for Whitesville, they hit the road once more tonight in a quick turnaround, taking on the Belfast Lady Bulldogs at 6 p.m.

FRIENDSHIP — Belfast put together their strongest offensive effort of the season over the road on Tuesday, as three different scorers notched double digits with Mary Hamer and Anna Drozdowski both leading the way for the Lady Bulldogs in their 58-30 season-sweeping victory over the host Friendship Lady Golden Eagles.
Coming out of the gates strong in the first quarter, the Lady Bulldogs (3-13) took it upon themselves to build on it. They did as such in a powerful manner, as they strung together every basket they could find to accumulate a massive 25-3 second quarter run of Friendship to take the 36-7 lead into the break, ultimately establishing the pace for the rest of the game.
Hamer and Drozdowski were two critical pieces to that puzzle for Belfast, as Hamer led all scorers on the floor with a game-high 14 points, while Drozdowski trailed behind with 11 points of her own. Jaiden Enders was the third Lady Bulldogs to record 10 points, hitting her point total right on the nose.

Fillmore 55, Bolivar-Richburg 23
FILLMORE — It was safe to say that there was no extinguishing the inferno that Fillmore senior Hannah Roeske had caught ablaze during their home contest with Bolivar-Richburg, Tuesday evening. In fact, her flames reached new heights with a career-high in the scoring department, as she went off with a career-high 29 points to soar the Lady Eagles to victory by a 55-23 count over the visiting Lady Wolverines.
“It’s a career night for Hannah, and she really came out of the gates on fire. She just couldn’t miss,” Lady Eagles coach Tom Parks said. “The overall pace the team set coming out was really what we wanted. They were pushing temp, and Hannah was dominant behind them all night long. We had 17 assists on all 23 of our baskets. That tells me the girls are moving the ball extremely well, and it created a bunch of opportunities for her to knock down.”
The Lady Eagles (16-2) struck multiple chords in the first half, as the defense buckled down to hold Bolivar-Richburg to single digits on offense the entire 32 minutes. It allowed Roeske to take charge of the offense with a 24-10 lead at the break, scoring 17 of those points herself to deliver the damage. From that point on, Fillmore went on to score their two biggest frames of offense to put the game away for good.
Finishing behind Roeske in the scorebook was Carlee Miller, who added in eight points of her own to pair with eight rebounds. BOYS BASKETBALL
Northstar 79, Wellsville 52
ROCHESTER — The Wellsville Lions knew that a tall task was ahead of them after defeating Archbishop Walsh this past weekend on Senior Night. Next in line was the Northstar Christian Knights.
One of the biggest assets that the Knights possess is their three-point game, which has been known to be lethal in the majority of the games they’ve contested in over the course of the season. Tuesday was no different, as they cracked it open almost immediately from the first quarter onward, nailing a dozen of them in all to power up what became a 79-52 home win over the visiting Lions.
“They had too many threes for us to make it through,” said Lions coach Raymie Auman. “The first quarter was a consistent quarter for us, but the problem with a team like Northstar, they were incredible shot makers and it was really hard to come back from it. The score didn’t represent how the game went. It was a slow start for sure, but after that, we played with them. We had just as many looks, especially in the second half, but we couldn’t convert on them. In my mind, it’s confidence and experience. At the end of the day, you can tell those kids collectively play a lot of basketball all year long.”
Five of Northstar’s 12 three-pointers came in the first half of play, with Ryan Garwood becoming responsible for three of them to help account for a 23-10 first quarter lead that grew to 12 at the break. In the third quarter, it was more of the same for the Knights, as they came across a similar run in the first quarter to hold Wellsville (10-8) in check on last time to put the exclamation point on the victory with the remaining seven three-bombs coming in the last 16 minutes of play.
Max Jusianiec led the Wellsville offense with a game-high 22 points, including three of the team’s seven threes. Eli Schmidt chipped in with 10 points of his own, while Logan Dunbar and Liam McKinley followed suit with eight, and seven points respectively.
Wellsville is back home this upcoming weekend for their final regular season home game, as they prepare to host a Saturday afternoon matinee with the Marcus Whitman Wildcats coming to town at 1 p.m.
