Tuesday Roundup: Andover/Whitesville provides solid Senior Night performance, blanks Scio with 8-0 shutout

ANDOVER — With COVID-19 still taking the world by storm, many high schools across the area have taken the liberty of moving their Senior Night celebration up to the beginning of the season, instead of the end.

Tuesday night after the Columbus Day weekend, Andover/Whitesville celebrated theirs in front of a socially-distanced crowd along the far sidelines in place of the bleachers. With Scio in town, the host Lady Panthers, despite extended days off from action, roared back refreshed by scoring five first half goals on their way to an 8-0 shutout of the Lady Tigers.

The Andover/Whitesville (2-0) offense came to life shortly after the opening kick, as Kennedy Bledsoe scored the first of her three goals within her eight-point evening for the Lady Panthers, taking a pass from Kelsie Niedermaier to her right side to strike the back of the net from dead center to give them the 1-0 early lead just over a minute into the game.

Another minute later, it was 2-0 after Rachel Jackson picks up a feed from Zoey Lee at the center of the Scio cage, as Jackson buries the ball far side from the left-hand side. The Lady Panthers would ultimately go on to score five goals in the first half, with three of the them coming in the first 10 minutes. Gabby Terhune was the last to finish that sequence, as she managed to collectively dig the ball free from amidst a scrum inside the Lady Tigers box, and tucking it away to make it a three-goal lead.

Niedermaier would dish out both of her assists on the last two goals of the 40 minute period, as she dished passes off to Zoey Lee and later to Bledsoe for her second of the game with 12:57 left in the half to branch out the advantage to five.

In the second half, more damage was done when Andover/Whitesville scored three more times, with goals coming from Lee once more, Niedermaier and Bledsoe toward the end of the game, as she finished off her hat trick. Grace Fry had two assists, while Rylie Bryan had one to chip in.

“The seniors played hard. It was a good Senior Night for us,” Lady Panthers coach Al Barber said. “These girls have played together for five practices, and one game now. We’ve come a long ways in a week’s time, and if we can keep going, I’ve got a pretty special team here. We’ve got a pretty solid midfield with some great distribution in it. This crew is good enough to control the tempo in the game. We started strong, but we lost our shape but that’s on the fatigue. The girls played well, all in all.”

In total, Andover/Whitesville recorded 30 total shots on the Scio (0-2-1) cage, while allowing just two back in their defensive zone. Livia Simon recorded her second shutout in between the pipes, making both stops. On the other side, Kiara Grover made 22 saves for the Lady Tigers.

Both teams will return to action on Thursday, as Andover/Whitesville pays a visit to Belfast for a 7 p.m. contest, while Scio returns home to host Senior Night festivities with the Lady Golden Eagles of Friendship for the second time in three games. That game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. first kick.

Wellsville 1, Hinsdale 1

WELLSVILLE — In a game where the Lady Lions of Wellsville heavily outshot visiting Hinsdale, the game would not end with a victory for either side on the scoreboard, as both Hinsdale and Wellsville fought their way to a 1-1 tie, with each team finding the back of the net once in both halves in their Tuesday night matchup.

Hinsdale (0-2-1) was the first team to strike, but at the tail end of the first half, as Lindsey Veno capitalized on a big direct kick opportunity in front of the Wellsville cage, sailing the ball past Lauren Viglietta in between the pipes to send the Lady Bobcats into the break with the advantage.

It would remain in the visitors favor for much of the second half, up until the Lady Lions (1-2-1) found a way to tie the game off the foot of Jaylynn Mess, who lofted the ball past Haylee Jozwiak between the pipes to tie the game at one. It would remain tied all the way to the end, as neither team could capitalize on their chances to break the deadlock.

“We tied 1-1 in the end. We just couldn’t finish the ball when we had our chances,” Lady Lions coach Erica Aftuck said. “We controlled pretty much the entire game. Our team played in their zone almost all the time, and we just could not find a way to score.”

Wellsville outshot Hinsdale by nearly a 5-to-1 ratio, taking the 24-5 advantage. Viglietta made threes saves for the hosts, while Jozwiak set aside 19 shots for the visitors.

Both teams will have their next game on Thursday, with Hinsdale going back on the road for a 5 p.m. contest at Genesee Valley, while Wellsville will welcome Fillmore for a 6 p.m. contest.

Genesee Valley 3, Bolivar-Richburg 1 (OT)

BOLIVAR — The Lady Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg were able to get on the board first in their Senior Night matchup against visiting Genesee Valley, Tuesday night, as they looked to build even more momentum after their big shutout in Wellsville before the weekend.

On the other side, the Lady Jaguars were also coming off a shutout of Wellsville days prior. But Genesee Valley was able to keep their momentum going while putting a halt on Bolivar-Richburg’s by scoring the next three goals, including a pair of big overtime goals to go out in front and win 3-1 over the road.

“You got to give GV credit, they got down in the first half and they just kept battling back,” said Lady Wolverines coach Mark Emery. “They made an adjustment, and it was the right adjustment. To get to overtime, they made it at the right time because it was so late in the game, that it energized them. We were a little out of sync ourselves for some reason tonight. Usually Senior Night is a motivator, but we felt like we were a step off. We got quality chances throughout regulation and overtime, but we couldn’t put it in the net. A crazy game is like that sometimes.”

Madigan Harris was responsible for getting Bolivar-Richburg (2-2) on the board first, as she took a pass from her sister, McKinlee Harris and put it away in the Genesee Valley goal just under halfway left in the opening half to earn them the early lead.

Not five minutes later, the Lady Jaguars (2-1) responded with a quick unassisted tally from Maddy Mackenzie, as she picked up the ball and delivered the game-tying shot to lock up the game at one each entering the break.

For much of the second half, both teams battled to where extra time was needed. That extra time was spent by Genesee Valley breaking the tie with the Lady Wolverines, as they accounted for both of their overtime goals in each period, with Kaycie Bigelow getting the first at the halfway mark of the first extra time session to give the team in white and green the 2-1 lead.

With 3:49 left to go, it gave the Lady Wolverines another chance to re-tie the game, but the Lady Jaguars finished things off with their third unanswered goal in a row from Sierra Burrows, receiving a feed from Emera Aquila at center to drive home the nail in the coffin on the victory.

The shot department was nearly dead even between the two teams, as Bolivar-Richburg narrowly outshot Genesee Valley by a 13-10 count. In goal, Ashley Burrows recorded the win for the Lady Jaguars, stopping 10 shots, while Paige Taylor made eight stops for the Lady Wolverines.

Both teams are back on the field Thursday night on their home fields, as Genesee Valley looks to make it three straight with Hinsdale in town for a 5 p.m. battle, while Bolivar-Richburg looks to right the ship again with Cuba-Rushford in for a 6 p.m. visit.

Fillmore 4, Cuba-Rushford 2

CUBA — Right out of the gate, Cuba-Rushford was able to get the ball rolling quickly with the first goal of the game. But from that point forward, Fillmore would not let it cause a setback, as the Lady Eagles scored four unanswered goals to go ahead of the Lady Rebels and toward victory with a 4-2 win on Tuesday.

“Fillmore’s offense is relentless,” Lady Rebels coach Aaron Wight said. “It took a lot of guts from our girls to hold them at four goals. We had a good chance that fell wide with about 10 minutes left that would have made the game really interesting coming down the stretch. All things considered, I’m proud of how our girls played up against them.”

Both Lady Rebels (1-2) goals came unassisted with Hunter Jahnke earning the first just over four minutes into the game to put her team out front. But, the Lady Eagles were able to respond quickly 48 seconds later off a goal from Mallory DeRock, as Sophia Templeton provided one of her two assists to tie the game.

That would begin a series of goals for the Lady Eagles (4-0), as they took control of the game from that point on, scoring a 2-1 lead at halftime paid in part by a Shelby Beardsley goal near the 10 minute mark off a Grace Russell feed.

Hope Russell then took command in the second half for the visitors, as she scored both goals in a five minute span near the midway mark of the period to extend Fillmore’s lead to four. Templeton added her second assist on Russell’s first goal coming at 23:36 on the clock.

The scoring wrapped up with Macie Demick getting her first of the season for the Lady Rebels with 12:11 remaining to play to cut the deficit in half. Despite grabbing a chance to potentially cut the deficit even further, the Lady Eagles were able to shut the door on Cuba-Rushford for good.

In the shot department, Fillmore outshot Cuba-Rushford by an 18-6 total count. Preslee Miller and Lizzy Nugent combined to get the win for the Lady Eagles, as they stopped four total shots altogether. On the flip side, Tara Duvall stopped 14 shots for the hosts.

Both teams are back on the field Thursday, as Fillmore hops back on the bus and heads to Wellsville, where they will meet the Lady Lions for a 6 p.m. contest. As for Cuba-Rushford, they will head to Bolivar-Richburg for a 6 p.m. contest of their own.
