Wednesday Roundup: B-R reaches 10 wins, offense docks 5-run 2nd inning to set tone in 12-2 win in 6 innings; Vogel Ks 12, records 2-hit shutout of C-G/J-T in 3-0 win for Lions
BOLIVAR — The fast start is pivotal, especially in the game of baseball. If you're the team that manages to come away with it first, the game is yours to control at your own pace. Wednesday night, the right to command the ship on the diamond remained in the air between both Bolivar-Richburg and Cuba-Rushford, as they came out of the first inning all tied up.
With even ground still waiting to be navigated through, the chance to turn the tide came in the second inning. After a scoreless stand on defense, the momentum shifted to the plate for the Wolverines, where they were able to break the door down completely, scoring a five-run frame to bolt away from the Rebels for good to secure a 12-2 win in six innings.
“All the way up and down the order, the guys were really putting the ball in play. Wyatt (Karnuth) and Cam (MacDonell) made solid contact every time they were up to lead us, and our pitching was very good. Trey (Buchholz) and Reiss (Gaines) both threw well tonight.” said Wolverines coach Dustin Allen.
After a smoked lead-off triple that nearly left the park from Noah Siegel, hitting the top of the fence in deep left field, it would lead to Cuba-Rushford's (4-6) first run of the game on the next at-bat with Logan Lewis bringing him in on a fielder's choice to the right side.
In similar fashion, the Wolverines (10-1) came right back with a fielder's choice of their own to re-level the playing surface, as Cam MacDonell delivered a strike in the same area of the infield to plate Trey Buchholz from third.
After scoring the team's first run, Buchholz then took it to the mound, where he was able to shell out a massive frame of play, despite a Rebels runner reaching by a walk, as he garnered all three of the outs at the plate with his arm to get the Wolverines off the field.
That set up shop for what came to be in the bottom half of the second – a five-run stand that saw Buchholz and MacDonell collect a pair of two-run belts, with Buchholz scoring two on a single into the outfield, and later MacDonell following with a double that scored two more.
The Bolivar-Richburg offense slowly continued adding to their lead until the game reached its end on the bottom of the sixth, when they scored the final two runs to force the 10-run rule to collect their 10th win of the season.
Buchholz would grab the win on the rubber with four strikeouts and a walk, with Reiss Gaines adding in a fan and walk along the way, as the two hurlers combined to hold Cuba-Rushford to just three hits on offense.
Wyatt Karnuth led the bats for the hosts by going 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and three runs scored. MacDonell followed with his two-run double, totaling four RBI in all to go with his two-hit evening. Ethan Childs chipped in a single.
For the Rebels, Benson McCumiskey struck out two and walked two in his two-inning start. At the plate, Jon White added in a single.
Both teams will reconvene back in Bolivar for tournament action in a few days time, but for now, the Rebels will head back home to host Hinsdale in a 5 p.m. clash tonight.
As for Bolivar-Richburg, they will host Oswayo Valley in the first round of tournament action beginning on Friday, with the 7 p.m. nightcap. Beforehand, Cuba-Rushford will battle Honeoye in the tournament's starting matchup at 5 p.m.

WELLSVILLE — Ty Vogel was unstoppable for the Lions of Wellsville this past weekend, as he and Cooper Brockway combined for a no-hit performance against Elmira, despite falling in extra innings. The question now: How do you follow it up?
Wednesday night's home battle with Canisteo-Greenwood/Jasper-Troupsburg approached, with Vogel receiving the call to try and follow up his Saturday performance.
After being handed the ball, the Wellsville freshman took it and fired on all cylinders, as he picked up where he left off with an incredible two-hit shutout of their visiting opposition, handing out 12 chairs and walking just two while the offense found their way across the plate in a defensive battle that saw the Lions come away as 3-0 victors.
“Neither team was hitting particularly well, but Ty was dominant again tonight,” said Lions coach Tom Delahunt. “He's definitely maturing right before our eyes, and he's gaining a lot of beneficial experience this year as a freshman. We're looking forward to everything that he has coming for him. Things are beginning to look up for us, as we returned Logan (Dunbar) to the lineup. We have a couple more weeks before Sectionals, and I feel like we're beginning to heat up.”
While Vogel kept the Canisteo-Greenwood/Jasper-Troupsburg offense quiet at the plate all game, the offense slowly but surely began to take shape across the middle innings of action. After both teams exchanged a pair of scoreless frames, the Lions (7-6) found their way onto the board with a run in each of the next three tenures at the plate to establish a lead that they would never lose, as they hopped back above .500 on the season.
Wellsville scored three runs off just five hits at the plate, with Kavan O'Grady leading the twigs with a pair of hits, driving in a run and scoring one of his own in the process. Alex Green chipped in with a double, while Vogel and Alex Perkins had a hit each to add.
The Lions will look to continue the momentum into the weekend, as they return to their home field for a 3 p.m. first pitch against the Addison Knights, Saturday afternoon.

Fillmore 15, Genesee Valley/Belfast 8
HOUGHTON — The red hot Eagles of Fillmore were on their toes early on against Genesee Valley/Belfast, Wednesday night on the confines of Houghton College.
They fell behind the visiting JagDogs rather quickly, as they scored six of the first seven runs to apply a fair amount of pressure in the early-going. But the Eagles would not let stand any further.
The response they provided was overpowering, as they rallied back with incredible force in the fourth inning with a 10-run frame to complete their comeback victory in style, joining Bolivar-Richburg by collecting their 10th win of the season by a 15-8 count over the JagDogs.
Straight out of the gate, Genesee Valley/Belfast (4-8) made their mark during the first at-bats of the game, scoring their first three runs while holding Fillmore at a standstill across the next two innings. After an even trade in the third, the bats came alive.
With a 6-1 lead in hand for the JagDogs, after adding two more in the top of the fourth, the home half saw the game's biggest counter develop and come into fruition, as the Eagles (10-1) capitalized on everything they could to break loose towards a 10-run frame that earned them an 11-6 lead they would build on until the end, scoring four of the last six runs to finish off the come-from-behind win.
Three different Eagles all led the way at the plate in the midst of a 13-hit performance, with Nolan Krzeminski charging the production with three hits. Aiden Wagner and Alex Ellsworth each had two hits, while Brent Zubikowski gathered the lone extra-base hit of the game, scoring a double.
On the rubber, the win belonged to Zach Sisson, who recorded seven strikeouts and walked three in his four-inning start.
As for the flip side, Genesee Valley/Belfast collected eight runs off six total hits at the plate, with Thai Norasethaporn leading with a pair, including a double. In his three-inning start against Sisson, Carter Sisson struck out three and walked four. The JagDogs are back on the road tonight in Whitesville, as they take on Andover/Whitesville in a 5 p.m. first pitch.
Fillmore will go for their 11th win in the last 12 games after the weekend, as they head back home to the Town field on Monday to host Arkport/Canaseraga in a 5 p.m. contest of their own.

Fillmore 6, Genesee Valley/Belfast 1
FILLMORE — Over the course of the past couple of games for the Lady Eagles of Fillmore, Skylar Gaddy has emerged extravagantly in possession of one of the biggest bats in the lineup, providing most of, if not, the bulk of the offense when the team has needed it the most.
That was no different, Wednesday night back on their home turf.
With Genesee Valley/Belfast in town, and off to a quick lead in the opening frame, Gaddy opened up the Fillmore offense with a re-kindling of the lumber, igniting a massive first inning go-around led by a two-run double off her bat, setting the tone for the Lady Eagles going forward in what was a 6-1 home victory.
“In the top of the first, we walked a batter and had an error, but after that we were good as we have been in the field all season,” Lady Eagles coach Jon Beardsley said. “We made a lot of good plays and stranded a handful of GV/Belfast runners with good defense. In the last three innings, they had runners in scoring position and we were able to hold them scoreless. That pressure hasn't been something we could deal with, but today they took a big step forward. GV/Belfast is a solid team, and both our games with them this year came down to winning a defensive battle.”
After Genesee Valley/Belfast used some baserunning to their advantage to break the ice in the top of the first inning, the Lady Eagles defense would then settle in and deliver one of their best outings thus far, holding the Lady JagDogs across six shutout innings led by a three-hit victory by Saige Friedl in the circle, as she fanned six and walked three in the complete game.
While the defense took command, the burst of energy translated to the offense in the home half for Fillmore (7-5), as they quintupled Genesee Valley/Belfast's response with Gaddy firing off a two-run double in the midst of it to overtake the Lady JagDogs in the driver's seat, ultimately for good, as they added one final piece of insurance late to lock up the triumphant battle.
The Lady Eagles offense scored six runs off five total hits, with Gaddy finishing with a pair. Torann Wolfer contributed a hit of her own and drove in a run, while Zoe Beardsley and Emily Krzeminski helped the cause with a base hit bunt each.
On the other side of the field, the Lady JagDogs (4-7) saw Harley Proctor, Anna Drozdowski and Abby Sullivan all collect hits, each earning singles. In the circle, Ashley Burrows fanned five in her four-inning tenure. The team will now prepare to head for Whitesville on Friday to take on host Andover/Whitesville in a 5 p.m. first pitch.
After this weekend concludes, Fillmore will return to their home turf for another 7 p.m. contest under the lights, as they get set to do battle with the Lady Wolves of Arkport/Canaseraga.

BOYS TENNIS
Many locals qualify for Class B4 Sectionals in Canandaigua
HOUGHTON — The hunt for Sectional gold will soon dawn upon the tennis courts across Section V. On Wednesday from within the Kerr-Pegula Fieldhouse at Houghton College, the majority of Allegany County came together to vie for spots in the Class B4 Tournament, which begins in just over a week's time up north in Canandaigua.
At the end of the night, multiple individuals and doubles teams were able to lock up berths to compete for Sectional patches come May 14.
Among them, undefeated Fillmore was able to send their top two singles players along with both of their doubles teams to the Finger Lakes region, as Carter Sisson and Eben Schilke both earned berths in the tournament with wins over Caleb Hilsher and Alex Fraile of Houghton Academy, respectively. Schilke would go on to win in the Singles Finals with a 7-5, 6-1 win over his teammate, Sisson.
“Carter and Eben are so evenly matched and similarly met in the Finals last year, with Eben winning. I think Carter really wanted to avenge the loss, and they played a great back and forth first set. Once Eben got the first, you could see his mindset start to change,” said Eagles coach Randy Crouch. “He went into attack mode and put Carter on his heels. Eben really took his game to a different level. I was hurting for Carter, but it was fun to watch Eben step it up.”
Fraile and Hilsher would earn berths to the tournament as well for the Panthers. Among the other qualifiers was Genesee Valley/Belfast's Trevor Clark and Dominic Marro.
In the doubles department, Fillmore's teams – Joe Derck and Layton Sanasith, along with Marcus Wolfer and Isaiah Sisson both earned spots to compete for doubles Sectional titles, with the two teams meeting in the overall Doubles Finals. Wolfer and Sisson would come away as winners by a 6-4, 6-2 count.
“Joe and Layton have been playing really well, but I put Marcus and Isaiah together for one match last week, and thought they had potential together,” said Crouch. “It was great to watch them evolve during their matches today. They really gelled and complemented each other's strengths.”
The two Eagles doubles squads along with their opponents – Houghton Academy's Sam Winkens and Josh Paschalis, along with Scio's Jude Marion and Corey Field, will also earn berths into the Class B4 Tournament.
Joining them, a second doubles team for the Tigers in Ben Weimer and Liam Carouge, as well as Genesee Valley/Belfast's team of James Frawley and Luke Snyder.
Cuba-Rushford will also send their top singles player, Nate Cole to Sectionals, as he fought back in his match down by as much as 5-1, winning the next six sets in a row to claim a top spot in the individual tournament.
TRACK
Wellsville sweeps road quad-meet at GV/Belfast
BELMONT — The slick, cool conditions would not put a damper on a massive meet between four different schools, who all met at one place at one time, as Genesee Valley/Belfast welcomed Wellsville, Fillmore and Houghton Academy for action on Wednesday.
