Thursday Roundup: Wellsville escapes past C-R in electric five-set thriller on Senior Night; Lions, Wolverines wrestling victorious at home

WELLSVILLE — Cuba-Rushford has had the upper-hand on Wellsville through most of this season’s occurrences. With a sweep in their first regular season matchup in Cuba, and a Genesee Valley Mid-Season Tournament title win over the Lions already under their belt, the Rebels were gunning for more.

When the calendar flipped over to Thursday, their final regular season meeting in Wellsville had arrived. And with it, the number one seed in the Allegany County Playoffs was up for grabs, as both teams entered the evening with identical 7-1 records.

Inside the gymnasium at the Wellsville Elementary School, you would think Sectionals had come early for the Rebels and Lions. Turns out, it was the most intense volleyball game of the season. Both teams were platformed on a teeter-totter, and through every exchange, the balance of power shifted along with it. Whether it be rally after rally, or run after run. No matter the cost, it was a true fight from within the rectangular circle.

Both cheering sections gave it their all, as the game went the distance inside a potential preview in just over two week’s time that may decide this year’s champion of Allegany County boys volleyball.

Wellsville was able to push Cuba-Rushford to the brink after the first two sets of play, but the Rebels mounted a comeback in the next two sets to tie the game at two. In the fifth and deciding set, a late Rebels rally turned up the pressure on the Lions. But with Isaiah Scott’s help, his pair of clutch kills in the endgame paid major dividends, as the Lions held off the Rebels and their amazing resiliency with a five-set (25-22, 25-21, 20-25, 13-25, 15-10) victory.

“We knew going into the match that it would be a tough one,” Lions coach Jaguar Santas said. “Our only loss this season was to them, and they have some really aggressive hitters. They are always ready to work on defense. Both teams played with a ton of energy, and it made for the most intense match I’ve seen all season. While our players deserve credit for the hard-fought victory, I don’t think we could have done it without the strong support from the sidelines. I am looking forward to see more of this intense play as we move into the playoffs.”

The general feeling that was captured throughout the evening was a back-and-forth battle one had to witness at first glance, with Wellsville (8-1) springing out to big leads in the first two sets of play. With it, the Rebels played the role of underdog, fighting and clawing their way back into the game to trim down their deficit to the Lions as little as possible.

They would come close in the opening pairs of sets, but it was not enough as the Lions jumped out to a 2-0 start to push the Rebels to the edge early.

“It was ugly for us in the first two sets,” said Rebels coach Nick Perillo. “From start to finish, and top to bottom on our roster, the guys were just not in it. They were coming off the court looking a bit down after it, but somehow they realized that we can play right with them. Things can switch up so fast that the momentum can change too. Once people get going, the confidence does too.”

Through thick and thin, the Rebels made sure the night did not end quickly, despite the early deficit.

The third set would echo the first set of the night in the same way that the night began — Wellsville taking off on an early run before the Rebels came back to tie the game with a run of their own. But this time, both teams would lock horns on the battleground through and through. Inside a set that saw multiple lead changes approaching its conclusion, Cuba-Rushford saw their opening with their first official lead of the night by a 22-19 count.

They would go on to finish the set with five of the last six points to carry the momentum into the fourth set, where they picked up immediately where they left off through the first 12 serves, scoring nine of those 12 points to continue their ongoing run of the Lions to keep laying their foundation down on a potential comeback.

With a 10-8 Rebels lead entering the 19th serve, the Rebels began charting their course toward a fifth and game-deciding set by taking complete control of the late stages in the third set, taking off on another run of Wellsville, this one morphing into a 10-3 jaunt to give the visitors in blue their largest lead of the evening at nine — 20-11 to force a Lions timeout on the floor.

The set would come to a close in the Rebels favor after a big Devin Tullar block, and big Caden Larabee kill finished off a 25-13 fourth set victory to force the final set behind a massive 15-5 run.

In the night’s fifth set, the back-and-forth pace settled back in once more in the early-going before both teams made a switch on the court, with Wellsville shaking off an acrid fourth set in favor of a 7-3 run before the Rebels cut it down to just a pair of points entering the back half of the set. But the Lions managed to keep their lead in tact with seven of the last 11 points ultimately going their way by virtue of Isaiah Scott’s back-to-back kills to undoubtedly give Wellsville the number one seed heading into the playoffs.

“The game was a little pride killer, knowing this was a first place game going into the final week of the season,” Perillo said. “I warned the guys before the game, and I told them that we beat them the first time at home in a sweep, and then again at Genesee Valley. Through the first two sets, it looked like we were going to get crushed by them. But it took up to 50 points for them to wake up a bit. It’s unfortunate to fight all of it back, and then lose it pretty quickly, but I’m proud of the comeback. Hopefully we can move that energy from start to finish in time for the playoffs.”

When it was all said and done, Scott led all Wellsville attackers with nine game-high kills to go with five digs and four aces. Walker Waldon added eight kills of his own to pair with four blocks at the net. On defense, Robert Schuryn and Jake Schlau led the way with seven and four digs, respectively, while setter Matt Bittel dished out 18 assists up front.

The Rebels were led by Tullar on offense, who tallied five kills to coincide with four blocks and three aces. Setter Caden Larabee handed out 19 game-high assists to help the cause, recording three aces from the service line and one kill along the way.

The regular season comes to a close for both the Lions and Rebels on Monday, as they each host 6 p.m. matchups with Wellsville welcoming in Bolivar-Richburg, and Cuba-Rushford returning home to host Scio for their annual Senior Night celebration. Santas said with the number one seed in hand, the goal will be to build a large amount of momentum through the next week to get ready for the playoffs.

“I’m very proud of my team for being one of the top teams in the league this year,” he said. “But I don’t feel that the first round bye in the playoffs is very beneficial to us. We play our last regular season game on Monday, and then we’re off for a week before the semifinal round. The goal will be to build momentum over the course of the week so that we can be ready to play with some intensity. Humility is also an important component. The other teams in the league are strong, and any of them could surprise us if we are overconfident heading into the playoffs.”

As for his playoff outlook, Perillo says his Rebels squad is more than capable of capturing the County crown as the No. 2 seed.

“Monday’s our Senior Night, and I’m hoping we can put together a complete performance,” he said. “A performance that is similar to what we did in the last two sets tonight. Hopefully we can use it to finish the season strong, and make that confident push going into the playoffs. Playing the way we have been playing, we have a real shot at winning the County championship.”

Scio 3, Genesee Valley 1

BELMONT — With the top of the standings being decided at the same time over the road in Wellsville, the Scio Tigers, meanwhile, are in the middle of a packed field alongside Bolivar-Richburg and Arkport/Canaseraga with one final game remaining on their schedule.

The host Jaguars of Genesee Valley on Thursday got off to the right foot with a first set victory, but the Tigers rallied their way back from behind to take the last three sets away to earn the four-set victory over the road by a 21-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-13 count.

Patryk Pietruszka had a heavy offensive effort up front for Scio (4-5), recording a game-high 20 kills to go with four blocks and two aces. Elia Travaini and Devin Beckwith each recorded 14 service points, while Travaini dished out 10 assists, six kills on offense, and two aces, and Beckwith added two kills and two blocks.

Stats for the Jaguars (0-10) were not available to report upon publication.

The Tigers will continue the battle for the County’s third seed in the playoffs over the road, visiting the Rebels of Cuba-Rushford for a 6 p.m. contest on Monday. Genesee Valley’s regular season closes up, as they finish the regular campaign with an 0-10 record.

WRESTLING

Wellsville 72, Jasper-Troupsburg 6

WELLSVILLE — It was a night filled with success inside the Lion’s Den on Thursday. With just two matches left in their regular season schedule, it was an opportunity to finish up strong before the big Sectional dance approaches in a short time from now.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Andover 37, Bradford/Hammondsport 22

HAMMONDSPORT — Although their offense could not find a way to click during their road trip at Bradford/Hammondsport, the defensive side of the court managed to shine through the window of opportunity, as the Lady Panthers defense held the host Lady Lakers to under 10 points in each of the four quarters of action, allowing them to pull away to victory by a 37-22 count on Thursday.

“Our offense was really sloppy and undisciplined. But the girls did a really nice job tonight on defense, something we will have to really focus on for the next couple of weeks if we want to compete to our fullest potential in Sectionals.” Lady Panthers coach Jake Bannerman said.

While a low-scoring first half came to an end with Andover (10-3) taking a seven-point lead into the locker room, they returned to the court re-energized behind the guidance of Emily Wahl and Kelsie Niedermaier, who combined to score eight of the team’s 11 points to jumpstart an 11-4 third quarter run of the hosts to pull away for good.

Wahl led all scorers with a game-high 14 points, while Niedermaier followed up with 10 points. Livia Simon collected eight points, while Rylie Bryan and Katie Calladine rounded off the Lady Panthers offense with three and two points, respectively.

Andover is back on the road on Monday, as they hit the road for a clash with the Lady Blue Jays of Whitesville, winners of eight straight games. Tip-off is slated for a 6 p.m. start.

Whitesville 39, Houghton Academy 29

WHITESVILLE — After their latest win over Alfred-Almond this past Monday, the Lady Blue Jays of Whitesville continue to hit all their strides in the middle of their seven-game win streak. When Thursday came around, it was a result that saw them fight tooth and nail alongside visiting Houghton Academy across all 32 minutes, but managed to come out on top to win their eighth straight contest in a 39-29 low-scoring affair over the Lady Panthers.

“It was not a good showing from us at all tonight,” said Lady Blue Jays coach Aaron Rawady. “I give Houghton a lot of credit for that. Jeff (Prentice) had a great game plan coming in and his girls did a nice job of executing it. Our execution however, definitely needs to improve. But what I like about this group is despite our struggles, our effort is always at a high level. It wasn’t pretty, but we needed a game like this. I think we learned a lot about ourselves tonight.”

The task at hand was not easy for Whitesville (9-2) through the first half of play, as they had to battle their way from behind after a 10-6 first quarter lead quickly evaporated by Houghton Academy and their 10-1 jaunt inside the second quarter, allowing them to take a five-point lead at the break.

But in the second half, it was the strongest effort the Lady Blue Jays put on the scoreboard that counted.

In the third, they took the lead back from the Lady Panthers (5-6), but only by a single point, as they scored a game-high 18 points to pull ahead with a 29-28 lead entering the final eight minutes. Then, it was a strong finish for the hosts in white and blue, as the defense hunkered down to keep Houghton Academy shut down from the field while cashing in on a 10-1 run themselves to seal up the victory in the end.

With Houghton Academy turning their focus to Whitesville’s star shooter in Vanessa Hall for most of the evening, it allowed Serina Button to find her way to the top of the Lady Blue Jays scorebook with a team-high 13 points. Hall finished with 12 points, including a 7-for-10 outing at the charity stripe. Kate Pensyl added eight points along the way.

The Lady Panthers were led by a game-high 15 point performance from Jessica Prentice. Sarah Retz chipped in with 10 more points.

Whitesville will hop back onto their home floor after the weekend, as they welcome in Andover for a 6 p.m. visit on Monday. For Houghton Academy, they now return home to play host to Destiny Christian on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Bolivar-Richburg 50, Genesee Valley 19

BELMONT — Strong beginnings led to big things, and for the Lady Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg, a stellar first quarter was the start to their 50-19 road win at Genesee Valley on Thursday, as they managed to put a stop to their four-game slide.

“The slide is over finally, and it was a nice team game that the girls provided tonight,” Lady Wolverines coach Justin Thomas said. “There’s still some things we have to iron out, but it was nice to get back into a rhythm of things again. It was one of those games where things were flowing our way, and we made some adjustments along with it. The (McKinlee and Madigan) Harris girls were awesome, and Jianna (Nix) really helped us out on both ends.”

Three different scorers eclipsed double digits for the Lady Wolverines (7-5), with Aliyah Cole leading the way with a game-high 19-point, 16-board double-double. Kelsey Pacer helped the cause with 10 points and five steals, while Madigan Harris added 10 points. On special teams, McKinlee Harris added 10 more rebounds and six assists, while Jianna Nix was productive on all angles, recorded eight rebounds of her own to pair with four steals, three assists and two blocks.

The Lady Jaguars (2-12) were led by Lizzie Bentley, who scored a team-high eight points. Emera Aquila, Hailey Herring and Isabelle Ordway all had three points to chip in, while Adison Grusendorf added a basket.

Both teams hit their home floor again on Monday, as Bolivar-Richburg looks to keep their game moving in the right direction with Scio visiting at 6 p.m, while Genesee Valley heads back home to host Arkport/Canaseraga at 7:30 p.m.

Jasper-Troupsburg 60, Belfast 32

JASPER — The Lady Bulldogs fought alongside host Jasper-Troupsburg through the opening quarter of play, but in the second quarter the Lady Wildcats took the game to another level behind their biggest quarter of the evening, running off on a massive 22-10 run of Belfast to keep their lead in tact to capture the 60-32 home win on Thursday.

The Lady Bulldogs (1-10) were led on offense by Alicia Borden, who launched both of the team’s three-pointers on her way to a team-high 12 points. Emma Sullivan chipped in with eight points, while Mary Hamer added in six points. Kaitlin Sadler provided four points, while Anna Drozdowski finished off the Belfast scoring with a basket.

Hinsdale 43, Scio 17

HINSDALE — All the Lady Bobcats of Hinsdale needed Thursday night was a productive first quarter of play to set the tone, as they did just that while pitching a shutout on the defensive end to hold visiting Scio scoreless from the field to capitalize on their big run to put toward a 43-17 home victory over the Lady Tigers.

Through the scorebook, it was a balanced effort for Hinsdale (7-4), with Lindsey Veno finding the top of the leaderboard with a game-high 12 points. Kayla Brooks tallied seven points to help the cause, while Kaitlynn Roberson garnered six points.

Scio (1-11) was led by Ashlynn Scotchmer and Camryn Wiech, who each had four points.

Fillmore 78, Cuba-Rushford 25

FILLMORE — Just 48 hours away from their second appearance at the Dan Barkley Showcase, the Lady Eagles of Fillmore continued to show no signs of slowing down before their big clash with Canisteo-Greenwood, as they nearly recorded an 80-point evening from the field in the team’s 78-25 home win over visiting Cuba-Rushford on Thursday.

Hannah Roeske and Emma Cole tag-teamed the Lady Eagles (10-1) offense toward greatness, with Roeske charging the front of the pack with a game-high 22 points. Cole was a rebound shy from collecting a double-double, pitching in 20 points of her own to go with nine rebounds off the glass. Jadyn Mucher, Erin Mawn, Carlee Miller and Emilee Wright all had six points to chip in, with Miller dishing out five assists and Mawn taking four steals.

Cuba-Rushford (6-6) was led by senior Kate Howe, who was held to one of her lowest point totals of the season, finishing with a team-high 11 points. Taylor Searle contributed five points, while Lillian Forward finished with four of her own.

“It was one of those nights where we couldn’t miss,” Lady Eagles coach Tom Parks said. “It’s nice to have that to offset some of the bad nights, but the biggest takeaway from the game is identifying how great of a player Kate Howe is for Cuba-Rushford. I wish her a lot of luck the rest of the season. We know her over here personally with her playing AAU with our girls, but she is one of the nicest kids we have gone up against. I was proud of the girls to limit her the best they can, and I’m also happy that we don’t have to prepare for her anymore.”

Fillmore will now ride a 10-1 record into the main event Saturday afternoon at Alfred State, as they battle the undefeated and State-ranked Lady Redskins in the first of five scheduled contests at the Dan Barkley Showcase. First tip is slated for a 12 p.m. start.

Up next for the Lady Rebels is a road trip to Bolivar-Richburg coming up next Friday at 6 p.m.

SHINGLEHOUSE, Pa. — The Lady Golden Eagles of Friendship saw their seven-game slide come to an end Thursday night over the road. Lead by a team-leading performance from Kadence Donohue, Friendship was able to take care of business down below the border, as they returned home from Oswayo Valley with a 28-20 victory.

Donohue led all Friendship (2-9) scorers with 13 of the team’s 28 points. Navaeh Ross, Aaliyah Harmon and Claire Calhoun all helped the cause with four points each, while Faith Sands and Kendra Gleason rounded off the scorebook with two, and one point respectively.

A complete box score was not made available upon publication.

The Lady Golden Eagles hop back onto the floor on Wednesday, as they travel to Whitesville for a 6 p.m. tip-off with the host Lady Blue Jays.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Houghton Academy 51, Whitesville 34

WHITESVILLE — Ayo Banwo and Lee Murray both led an offensive attack for Houghton Academy that saw them crack double digits in the scorebook, as the Panthers used a strong first half to power up a 24-14 lead at the break, turning it into their fifth consecutive victory on Thursday by racing past the host Whitesville Blue Jays with a 51-34 victory.

“Our effort, especially on the defensive side of the floor, was very good tonight,” Blue Jays coach Scott Bledsoe said. “We had a lot of open looks on the other end, but we couldn’t get those shots to fall. If we can continue to work hard, and compete on a nightly basis, then we have something to build on. Tonight was some of the best team basketball we’ve played all season, and there are quite a few positives we can take away from this loss.”

Banwo caught fire from the inside perimeter for Houghton Academy (7-1), as he propelled his way to a game-high 23 point performance. Murray followed up with 11 points of his own, while Loik Makuza provided eight points.

Whitesville (1-10) was led by Jessie Pensyl and CJ Estep, as both each scored a team-high 11 points to charge the offense, with Pensyl grabbing 13 rebounds along the way to complete his double-double. Colby Gaines netted six points, while Chris Gullett followed with four.

The Panthers will return home on Tuesday to welcome in Destiny Christian for a 6:30 p.m. contest, while Whitesville hits the road for Belfast on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
