Thursday Roundup: Lady Lions pick up big win over the road at Marcus Whitman; Scio boys roll past Whitesville behind strong 1st half
RUSHVILLE — From Wellsville to Marcus Whitman by bus is around a two-hour ride. The Lions have already made that trek once this season, as they boys paid a visit to the Wildcats earlier this month. On Thursday, it was the ladies turn, as the Lady Lions looked to keep riding the wave down the homestretch to finish their regular season strong.
In the beginning, it was a bit of a struggle at first for both teams. But then the Lady Lions began to thaw out their cold shooting in the second quarter, flaring up for what ended up being a shift in the balance of power, as the defense held down the Marcus Whitman offense to just a single shot from the field in the midst of their 17-4 run to pull away toward a 34-27 victory over the Lady Wildcats.
“We’re glad to get this win. It’s easy to say it was the bus ride, but we were cold,” Lady Lions coach Michelle Alvord said. “We couldn’t shoot the ball, except for the second quarter. We had some shots that we found, and we started to get a little more aggressive with pushing the tempo. The 17-point lead was ours, and it didn’t really get much closer than that. We held their leading scorer in (Maddie) Ryan to just three points in the first half.”
In all, it was a 24-11 lead that was captured by the Lady Lions (13-4) when the first half reached its conclusion. In the second half, Marcus Whitman outscored Wellsville by a 20-10 count in the second half, but the double digit lead for the visitors in black and orange remained in tact for the remainder of the game.
Emily Costello and Regan Marsh led the Wellsville offense inside a balanced scorebook with 10 team-high points each, with Marsh grabbing six boards off the glass to add with her three steals. Costello swiped five steals along the way. Marley Adams added nine points, while Jaylynn Mess rounded off the scoring with five. In addition, Kaylee Coleman led the rebounding game with eight boards.
Next up for the Lady Lions is their final regular season road trip outside Allegany County, as they take a week off to prep for a visit to Warsaw at 7 p.m. next Thursday night.
“I’m not sure if this breaks comes at a good time or not, but I like being able to prepare for some of these games,” said Alvord. “It’s been a while since we played a game on a Tuesday and Thursday. I’ll be honest, I haven’t seen Warsaw at all this year, but we’ll learn more about them over the weekend. They have the (Ceanne) Ellsworth girl from last year, and she’s decent. They’re a scrappy team, and they don’t quit either.”
