Thursday Roundup: Lady Eagles use 2nd half to pull away from B-R to remain unbeaten; C-R girls stun Andover in waning seconds
BOLIVAR — Although the first half of an early Allegany County Division I clash between both Fillmore and Bolivar-Richburg was filled with whistles, it was safe to say that it carried quite a few ups and downs along with it.
But both respective offenses picked up quite a bit of steam before the action came to a close, with Fillmore seeing their way into the locker room with a double digit lead on Thursday.
In the second half, it panned out better for the unbeaten Lady Eagles, tucking away their two largest offensive quarters of the night to extend their double digit lead of Bolivar-Richburg for good, as they remained lossless on the season with a 48-19 road win over the Lady Wolverines.
“If anyone was wondering if Fillmore is still the class of Allegany County, the answer is yes,” Lady Wolverines coach Justin Thomas said. “They still do quite a bit of everything. They play fantastic defense, they move the ball really well, and with all of that, they’re going to be one tough team to beat. There are no holes in their game plan, and that’s a credit to (Tom) Parks. With Aliyah (Cole) getting into foul trouble, that’s more about Fillmore moving around, and drawing those fouls. They created a ton of pressure, and that created panic for us on our end.”
The opening eight minute period swung Fillmore’s (6-0) way for the majority of it, as they held Bolivar-Richburg without a shot at the basket well over six minutes deep in the midst of their 8-0 run, led by a Hannah Roeske three-point play.
That all came before the hosts found their way to the basket for the first time with a McKinlee Harris lay-in to end the drought.
At the end of the quarter, the Lady Eagles provided just three shots from the field to go with some help at the charity stripe to complete an 11-2 run that ultimately set the tone.
In the midst of a foul-filled first half, the second quarter saw both offenses pick up a little bit of steam toward the tail end, exchanging a combined eight points on four consecutive transitions. Fillmore would end the half with a double digit lead in hand, concluding with the last two points of the half at the line.
Upon both team’s exit from the locker rooms, the defending Class D1 champions remained in the driver’s seat for the second half, as they accounted for a 27-10 second half run of the Lady Wolverines to pull away permanently.
Roeske and Emma Cole took charge of the Lady Eagles offense, with Roeske leading the way with a game-high 18 points to go with four steals. Cole followed suit with a double-double off the bench, posting 12 points and 10 rebounds. Erin Mawn tallied nine points to go with four steals of her own, while Riley Voss led the glass game with 10 boards, and four assists.
The Lady Wolverines (6-2) were led by Harris, as she recorded seven of the team’s 19 points. Aliyah Cole was held down by the Lady Eagles defense to a season-low of five points, adding eight rebounds along the way.
Both teams are on the road Monday night, as the Lady Eagles head to Wellsville for a meeting with the red hot Lady Lions at 7:30 p.m, while the Lady Wolverines pay a visit to Whitesville and the Lady Jays for a 6 p.m. tip-off.

Cuba-Rushford 45, Andover 44
ANDOVER — If you happen to be a big fan of thrilling contests across any high school sport, Andover was the place for you on Thursday. It was a game between visiting Cuba-Rushford and the host Lady Panthers that boiled its way down to one final shot with five seconds left to play.
With the Andover offense frozen on one end, the Lady Rebels managed to cash on the other end of the floor from Cameron Shaw, as the junior center put away an enormous inside basket to put the team ahead.
The Lady Rebels would go on to make one last stop of the Lady Panthers offense before the buzzer sounded on their big 45-44 win over the road.
“It was a really tight battle both ways the entire game. I’m proud of how hard our girls fought, especially when we fell behind in the fourth quarter,” said Lady Rebels coach Aaron Wight. “We were down seven at one point to Andover, and the girls and their resiliency really showed to earn us this win.”
Across the scoreboard, there was no outscoring of the opponent larger than two, and no outscoring smaller that one at the end of each quarter. Andover (5-3) had the first half work out in their favor, as they dug up a 14-12 lead to carry into the second, where they battled their way to a three-point lead at the half.
In the next half, the Lady Rebels (4-5) continued to battle by picking up the advantage in the third quarter to trail by one. But the Lady Panthers found their way to the largest lead of the night — a seven-point lead in the midst of the fourth quarter.
But with a few defensive stops in their back pocket, Cuba-Rushford was able to claw back with some assistance from Shaw down low, as she sank the game-winning basket with under 10 seconds left to play to seal the comeback win.
Kate Howe led all Lady Rebels scorers with a team-high 20 points to go with 15 rebounds, six assists, and five steals. Taylor Searle pitched in with 11 points of her own. Shaw finished with six points total, including her game-winning basket inside.
Also helping the cause were Ella Jaffe and Sarah Cole, both finishing with four points to round off the scorebook for the team in blue and white.
The Lady Panthers saw both Emily Wahl and Kelsie Niedermaier take charge of the offense, with Wahl leading the efforts with 20 team-high points. Niedermaier followed with 12 points. Livia Simon tallied six points.

BOYS BASKETBALL
Genesee Valley 66, Bolivar-Richburg 57
BELMONT — It was a strong showing through the first eight minutes of play for the Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg, taking a five-point lead over host Genesee Valley entering the second quarter.
In the next frame, the Jaguars turned the tables, as they buckled down on defense to hold the visitors in black and red to their lowest quarter of offense of the night to outscore Bolivar-Richburg by a 22-6 margin to gain the upper hand for the remainder of the game to collect a 66-57 victory in their first game of the new decade.
“Jeff (Margeson) does a great job with those kids in Bolivar. The (Riley and Landon) Danaher kids caused some fits with us just a little bit,” Jaguars coach Lintz Bliven said. “A win’s a win, and we played well enough to win. We switched up our defenses to man-to-man after the first quarter, and they took it and ran with it. It still seemed like we were a step behind overall, and some of the shots we had didn’t really fall.”
Despite falling behind by 11 going into the half, the Wolverines would continue to keep Genesee Valley (6-2) on their heels in the second half, deadlocking with the Jaguars across the third quarter before overtaking the scoring in the final eight minutes to keep it close. But the second quarter run by the hosts proved to be the difference maker in the end.
Evan Windus led all Genesee Valley scorers with a team-leading 23 points. Cody Schneider followed along with 19 points of his own, all inside. Brock Ellsessor found his rhythm inside the arc, coming away with 14 points.
The night’s overall leading scorer was Bolivar-Richburg’s (4-6) Landon Danaher, who knocked down everything he saw for a game-high 29 points. Camden MacDonell paced the Wolverines inside game, tallying 14 points, while Riley Danaher had seven to add.
The Wolverines are back in action Tuesday night back home, as they play host to the Scio Tigers at 7:30 p.m.
As for Genesee Valley, they will prepare for an early morning bus ride to take on their fourth and final Class B opponent of the season at North Rose-Wolcott, where they face the host Cougars with a tip-off of 1 p.m.

BELFAST — Mount Morris found their way to the top after the opening quarter, but it was Belfast’s turn to take a lead heading into halftime behind a big quarter-stretching jaunt.
As both teams came back out onto the floor, the visiting Blue Devils had a response for the Bulldogs second quarter run with one of their own, as they held the hosts to just eight points across their game-changing 16-8 that saw them take the lead away, and the season series between the two foes with a 50-43 victory on Thursday.
