THREE’S A CROWD: Lady Lions use complete sweep of doubles matches, big 3rd singles win from Cawley to set stage for 3rd straight Section V title with 3-2 winning edge over A-P
DANSVILLE — It all came down to a beautiful Saturday afternoon in Dansville. They have seen each other plenty of times already this year, it was only appropriate for the Avoca-Prattsburgh Lady Titans and the Wellsville Lady Lions to settle the score one last time.
On this occasion, for all of the marbles in Section V again, for a second consecutive year.
Both matches already this year between the two clubs have witnessed two 3-2 decisions that have descended straight into the hands of the Lady Lions, who have remained absolutely on fire all season long to earn Class B2’s top seed, with a midseason loss to the hands of Harley Allendale-Columbia — their opponent in last year’s Class B State Qualifier match, serving as the only degree of separation from perfection.
As for the Lady Titans, they have also bundled together success of their own, entering the big dance at 12-3 overall and fronted by their Section V Singles Champion, Genevieve Dabby, who defeated Wellsville senior Samantha Bidzerkowny in the Championship match last weekend to earn her crown at Pittsford-Mendon.
Dabby would continue her winning ways over Bidzerkowny once again to headline the Lady Titans in the Finals. But from their two previous meetings a couple of weeks ago, there was one constant that remained consistent — Peyton Cawley.
At third singles, she would go on to finish a perfect 3-0 against Avoca-Prattsburgh in team play. With a sweep of both doubles matches in the wagon for the Lady Lions, Cawley was the last remaining piece of another championship-winning puzzle, as she survived an outstanding thriller with Avoca-Prattsburgh’s Olivia Mullen to lock up Wellsville’s third consecutive Class B2 championship by a 3-2 count.
Cawley did everything in her power to maintain her advantage in front of Mullen during their third singles bout, successfully building a big head of steam towards a close 6-3, 6-4 edge to claim the lone singles win for the Lady Lions (16-1). The remaining victories stemmed from the doubles department, with the first doubles team of Caitlin Bittel and Sarah Mattison helping guide the way forwards after an absolutely dominant 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Avoca-Prattsburgh’s Nataley Patoine and Mariah Bryan.
To close out the match victory, McKenna Wonderling and Shayla Cowan had the honors of helping bring out the brooms for the doubles sweep, as the second doubles pairing staved off the Lady Titans duo of Rylie Skelly and Gabrielle Wheaton to score a massive 6-3, 6-1 win.
Avoca-Prattsburgh was granted their two lone wins in singles competition, with Dabby’s back-and-forth battle with Samantha Bidzerkowny receiving a 6-3, 6-4 victory at the end of the match. Camryn Moore picked up the team’s second win behind a strong outing against Wellsville’s Hanna Miles, as she pieced together a 6-1, 6-2 decision at second singles.
The journey for the Lady Lions will continue next Monday, October 21 in the Class B State Qualifier, where either No. 2 Harley Allendale-Columbia or No. 1 Honeoye Falls-Lima — a Class B1 Finals match that will commence Sunday afternoon, will meet the now-3 time Class B2 Champions at the Mendon Pool & Racquet Club, at a time yet to be determined.
