Fillmore golfers give Section V superpower Cal-Mum tough battle, but top-seeded Raiders clinch 4th straight title with Class D Finals win over No. 2 Eagles at Sodus Bay Heights
SODUS POINT — It was the match of their season. On the confines of Sodus Bay Heights Golf Club up north, the Eagles of Fillmore made their long-awaited return to the Finals after five years. All season long, they have turned in one sublime performance after another, leading to a perfect undefeated 11-0 regular season.
They have added two more wins during Sectional play, totaling 13 in all. That number, also brought about a brand new school record for the golf program.
It has never just been one sole individual guiding the team’s path forward. At some point over the course of the year outdoors, every single Eagle in the starting rotation has recorded their fair share of glory as the team’s medalist. The balanced card has led them to this very moment going into Tuesday afternoon’s titanic clash with a Section V juggernaut — No. 1 Caledonia-Mumford.
Many shots were fired. Many scores were tallied. After all 18 holes were met with completion at the end of the afternoon, there was only one winner. That being the top seeded Raiders, who went on to shoot a round of 365 to propel their way towards a fourth straight Section V Championship on the links, as they handed Fillmore their first and only loss of the season by a 365-391 count.
“Cal-Mum has a very talented golf program. This is their fourth title in a row, and they were just a little bit better than us in the end,” said Eagles coach Tom Parks. “Having said that, we were able to produce one of our best seasons ever. We set a new record for wins in a season, we shot our lowest round ever, we won the League and we played for a Sectional Championship. This was the deepest team we’ve ever produced here at Fillmore. Every regular starter had a medalist at some point during this year. It’s something that just doesn’t happen.”
Despite the loss, the Eagles saw four outstanding performances on the links to finish off what was their final match of the 2024 season. They were led by Anderson Wiltsey, who fired the team’s lowest round of 96. Right behind him was Zach Sisson, who closed out his senior campaign with a round of 97. Reid Cockle chipped in with a 98, while Sam Cool had a score of 100.
Caledonia-Mumford was paced by the medalist round of 86 fired by Noah McCreedy.
A remarkable season on the links has officially come to a close for the Eagles of Fillmore, as they put a wrap on one of their best seasons in program history with a record of 13-1 overall. The team will part with four of their senior leaders when Graduation arrives in full next month, in Sisson, Cockle, Layton Sanasith and Jack Cool.
Parks says that their endless contributions have allowed them to take the program to heights they haven’t been able to reach before.
“This group of guys have played a ton of gold this year, and prepared as individuals and as a team probably more than any other crew I’ve had. It yielded a tremendous season. I’m very proud of the year we were able to have. We’re going to miss our seniors Jack, Layton, Reid and Zach. They certainly helped elevate our program to Championship contenders. We are going to miss them next season.”
