Thursday Roundup: Logue, Weaver help build strong 2nd half for Bulldogs in road win at Houghton; C-R volleyball remains unbeaten, captures 10th win with straight-set triumph at B-R
HOUGHTON — The Panthers of Houghton Academy were able to take the early advantage on Belfast out of the gate to begin their contest on Thursday. But from the second quarter until the end, the Bulldogs began to hit every stride possible.
With the emergence of both Anthony Logue and Matt Weaver, the Bulldogs offense ended the first half strong and carried the momentum into the second half, where they would pull away from Houghton Academy and toward their ninth victory in 11 games by a 50-29 count.
Both teams battled through the opening quarter, where a back-and-forth pace saw the Panthers take the game’s first lead after time expired. But the momentum would soon radically change directors in Belfast’s (9-2) favor, as they ended the opening half strong with the lead.
It would continue on with two massive runs in the second half, as the Bulldogs set the bar for the remainder of the game right as they emerged from the locker room, outscoring the Panthers (2-6) by a 15-6 count to officially pull away for good.
Anthony Logue and Matt Weaver led the attack for the visitors in black and red, combining for 38 of the team’s 50 points, with Logue scoring a game-high 20 points. Weaver chipped in with 18 points, while Kadin Logue had six points.
Houghton Academy was led by a team-high 17 point performance from Malachi DeGolyer, who powered the team’s three-point game with five of the team’s seven in all. Hugo Huang had the last two triples, for six points.
The Bulldogs are now off until next Friday night over the road, when they pay a 7:30 p.m. visit to Archbishop Walsh. Houghton Academy will look to hop back into the win column after the weekend, heading out to Keshequa for a 6 p.m. tip-off on Tuesday.

Andover/Whitesville 46, Friendship/Scio 37
ANDOVER — All game long, both Andover/Whitesville and Friendship/Scio were chasing each other’s coattails on Thursday. With the back-and-forth pace settling in fairly quickly in the opening quarter, something had to give coming down the stretch.
In the final eight minutes and a five-point lead in hand, Andover/Whitesville saw their defense come to life to finish their night strong, and held Friendship/Scio back with a big 18-point quarter on the transition down the court, as Andover/Whitesville warded off a late push in the end for a 46-37 home victory in Andover.
“Defense was the big difference tonight,” said Andover/Whitesville coach John Dougherty. “The team came out and played solid defense, and the standouts were not only CJ (Estep) as usual, but Luke (Erdmann) and Kohler (Niedermaier) stepped up, especially off the boards. We played really good basketball, even though we had a tough time on the outside perimeter. That was the only downside. We worked hard, and we came out with a win which we’re pretty happy about.”
Both teams provided some closely contested runs all throughout the game, with Andover/Whitesville (5-6) holding the slimmest of edges across the first three quarters to take a lead that Friendship/Scio continued to pressure. But in the fourth quarter, the hosts were able to put together just enough offense fueled off their defensive stand to keep their opposition in the rearview mirror, and forward toward victory in the end.
CJ Estep led the way for Andover/Whitesville on offense with a team-high 18 points. Luke Erdmann provided six big points in the fourth quarter from within his 12-point performance, while Kohler Niedermaier dominated down low with eight points.
Brenden Loucks led Friendship/Scio (6-6) with a team-high 18 points on the attack. Ethan Davenport contributed 12 points of his own.
Andover/Whitesville will now get set to battle the State’s top team in Class D — undefeated Avoca/Prattsburgh, in a 7:15 p.m. tip-off in Avoca, Tuesday night. As for Friendship/Scio, they will look to rebound next Friday night back on the road with a visit to Fillmore at 7:30 p.m.

Genesee Valley 28, Hinsdale 19
BELMONT — In a low-scoring affair, the first 10 minutes was enough for one team to pull ahead of another. With runs across three of the four quarters going no higher than three points, the beginning of the night would soon become tantamount in deciding a winner.
That belonged to the Genesee Valley Jaguars, who were able to hold visiting Hinsdale still in the first eight minutes with a 10-4 lead that saw some pressure, but not enough to turn the tide toward the Bobcats favor, as they held on to clinch the narrow 28-19 victory inside the Jungle on Thursday.
The Jaguars (3-8) were led by a game-high 11-point effort from Max Wedge. Morgan Torrey and Killian McKnight each had five points to add, while Fisher Herdman had four.
On the other side, the Bobcats (0-8) saw Cody Barton take charge, as he garnered a team-leading eight points. Sam Cashimere finished with seven.
Both teams will now have a long break before returning to action, as Genesee Valley welcomes in Belfast on January 24 with a 7:30 p.m. battle, while Hinsdale heads back home to prepare for Houghton Academy’s arrival two days later in a 7:30 p.m. contest of their own, on January 26.

WRESTLING
Bolivar-Richburg 45, Letchworth 15
GAINESVILLE — After a third place overall finish at this past week’s Section V Dual Match at Palmyra-Macedon, the Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg used the performance as a boost of momentum when they returned to their regular season schedule on Thursday over the road once more.
This time in a trip to Letchworth, where the night began with a lengthy match for Trey Buchholz at 126 pounds that ended in sudden victory. After some exchanging between both the Wolverines and host Indians, the visitors would ride a wave filled with forfeit wins along with two more wins on the mat to continue furthering their distance away from their opposition’s grasp and toward what was a 45-15 victory in the end.
Buchholz started the night with Letchworth’s Derek Smith in a tight battle at 126 pounds all the way down to the finish, where the Bolivar-Richburg grappler managed to come away with the points in sudden victory to give the team their first of eight total in the match, four of them by forfeit.
After a Letchworth forfeit win at 132 pounds, and a double forfeit at 138 pounds, Ethan Coleman added to it with a 3:11 pin-fall win over his opponent at 145 pounds. Letchworth would go on to add two more wins before a flood of forfeit wins began with Caden Allen (172 pounds), Phil MacDonell (189 pounds), Trent Sibble (215 pounds) and Lloyd Kinnicutt (285 pounds) all grabbing victories to give Bolivar-Richburg the lead back, ultimately for good.
The match concluded with two more Wolverines wins on the mat sandwiched between a double forfeit at 110 pounds, with Gary McDowell (102 pounds) grabbing the quickest pin of the evening in just 34 seconds, while Teegan Sibble had the last with her triumph at 118 pounds in a 1:21 pin-fall victory.
