Scio, Fillmore boys hoops become newest additions to end of the decade New York State rankings

The end of the decade is upon us all in the continental United States, and with it came a fresh new set of New York State basketball rankings pumped out by the New York State Sportswriters Association (NYSSWA) for both boys and girls basketball, as they officially made their list to the public as of Tuesday afternoon.

With three local teams already finding a spot within the top 20 teams across the state, two more Allegany County squads joined the conversation as honorable mentions inside Class D, with the Fillmore Eagles picking up the first honor.

The Eagles are off to a hot start to their season under first-year head coach Randy Crouch, finding the win column in five of their first six games to head into the winter break with a 5-1 record. Behind their ability to spread the ball around the floor, and their depth on the bench, Fillmore will look to continue making noise throughout the county when they return to action after break next Tuesday, playing host to the previously unbeaten Holland Dutchmen, who also received an honorable mention, at 7:30 p.m.

As for the other honorable mention, it was awarded to the Scio Tigers, who are off to a similar start to Fillmore with a 5-1 record of their own to go with their back-to-back Christmas Tournament title they received this past Saturday evening. Fresh off the school’s first Section V championship since 1979 back in the fall, Scio is hoping the momentum carries over onto the basketball court with fourth-year head coach Dillon McFall at the helm.

They will also return to action next Tuesday night at home, hosting the Bolivar-Richburg Wolverines at 7:30 p.m.

As for the teams that were previously ranked in New York State, they received a new spot within Class D. On the boys side, the Genesee Valley Jaguars, despite dropping an 82-60 loss to the hands of State-ranked Prattsburgh this past Saturday night, moved up two positions from last week to sit in the 11th spot overall with a 5-2 record. The Jaguars are back on the floor next Thursday night, welcoming in Bolivar-Richburg at 7:30 p.m.

On the girls basketball side, the Fillmore Lady Eagles moved up just one position in Class D after previously being ranked 8th, ascending to the 7th position with a record of 4-0. The Lady Eagles will look to make it five in a row when they return from the break next Thursday over the road at Alfred-Almond.
