Saturday Roundup: Wolverines roll behind run game, stout defense in home shutout of Clyde; Lady Lions capture 2nd Tourney title at GV

BOLIVAR — If there was anything that went wrong for the Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg, it was a fumble that occurred on their first drive of the game.

Aside from one of two turnovers they committed, it was a thing of the past later on in the quarter, as they managed to get all three facets of their game involved to build a massive first half lead that they never looked back on at Dunsmore-Latimer Field, coasting their way past visiting Clyde-Savannah with a 56-0 rout on Saturday.

The offense provided 245 total yards, the majority of which on the ground to go with five touchdown runs, led by Landon Danaher, who scored two of his three touchdowns in the first quarter. He would garner a total of 11 carries for 67 yards to go with his scores.

The defense would soon become involved in the success driven by the offense, as Ethan Coleman provided Bolivar-Richburg (2-1) with one of two pick-sixes in the contest, the first from 12 yards away to extend their first quarter lead out to 21. After Danaher started the second quarter with a bang behind his 13-yard touchdown, Brayden Ellis followed with the team’s second pick-six on the next Clyde-Savannah drive, scoring from 25 yards out.

In all, the Wolverines defense would force the ball over to their side six times against the Golden Eagles, collecting three fumble recoveries and three interceptions.

The Wolverines would find their way toward a 48-0 lead at the break with Rudy Polk scoring a pair of runs himself from the goal line, and right before the end of the half on a 23-yard run. Right from the opening kickoff in the second half, Polk provided the hosts in black and red with the final score of the day — taking the kick straight to the house from the 22-yardline of their own for a 78-yard score.

Polk’s return for a touchdown helped complete a three-headed monster on the gridiron, as the Wolverines also saw dual-sport athlete Hunter Stuck, who had already participated in nearly 90 minutes of soccer earlier that morning in Hinsdale, go 6-for-7 in extra points.

Helping the cause behind Danaher in the backfield was Kadin Tompkins, who recorded four rushes for a team-leading 76 yards to go with his interception on defense. Polk finished with 42 yards on six rushes, while the defense was fronted by Trent Sibble, who concluded another massive day on the line with five tackles to pair with his 3.5 sacks, 2.5 coming in the first quarter.

Bolivar-Richburg will look to keep the ball rolling this Thursday night at VanDetta Stadium in Batavia, taking on host Notre Dame-Batavia at 7 p.m.

BOYS SOCCER

Hinsdale 3, Bolivar-Richburg 2 (F-OT)

HINSDALE — Throughout the morning in Hinsdale, a back-and-forth duel had ensued. In the first half alone, all four of the game’s goals were accounted for. Multiple lead changes were exchanged, but for the entire second half and further beyond, they would tangle.

After a fairly defensive second half went by, overtime was needed. Unlike in girls soccer, where both extra sessions are needed to complete the game, Bolivar-Richburg and Hinsdale needed just one. And that was finished by Tucker Schwartz.

With a 2-2 tie needed to be broken, the Hinsdale senior bolted away from the Wolverines defense and in on goal, finding the back of the net with 6:50 remaining in the first overtime session to give the Bobcats the 3-2 win for their third victory in first four games on Saturday.

The scoring began in the early stages of the opening half when both teams traded goals in the first 10 minutes to provide a 1-1 deadlock, with the Wolverines (4-2-2) scoring first off a Wyatt Karnuth goal that stemmed from a Reiss Gaines pass, one of two that Gaines had in the contest.

The goal came at the 34:54 mark of the first half, and just over three minutes later, the Bobcats (3-1) provided a response with Schwartz’s first of the game off a Brandon Hayman helper from the back. Hinsdale would go on to take a step ahead further by taking their first lead on Hayman’s goal from Schwartz just over six minutes removed from the Schwartz goal.

But the Wolverines would find a way to tie it back up one more time before the half ended, with Gaines dishing out his final assist to Aydin Sisson with 8:57 left to go, to do so.

From the start of the second half forward, both teams locked horns and went back and forth all the way until Hinsdale put away the game-winner with under seven minutes left in the first overtime to seal the victory.

Both teams are back on the field Monday night with a pair of 5 p.m. home games, with Hinsdale welcoming in Friendship while Bolivar-Richburg heads back home to host Genesee Valley/Belfast.

Genesee Valley/Belfast 4, Houghton Academy 0

HOUGHTON — Matt Weaver recorded two of Genesee Valley/Belfast’s four goals, one of them coming in a three-goal second half for the team, as they broke a 1-0 lead over Houghton Academy at the half wide open in the last 40 minute session, rolling away from the host Panthers with a 4-0 shutout on Saturday.

Weaver would give Genesee Valley/Belfast (5-2) a 1-0 lead at the break with his first goal, an unassisted tally. Three more goals would find their way across later on after the break, as Weaver collected his second and Max Miller scored a two-goal afternoon himself to finish off the scoring, and a 20-shot day for the offensive front.

On special teams, Joe Ward handed out a pair of assists, one to both Weaver and Miller, while Trent Scott assisted on Miller’s second goal of the game. In turn, the defense provided a strong response by holding Houghton Academy (1-2) to just one shot on goal.

In net, Thai Norasethaporn earned the shutout making the one stop, while Chris Habecker made 17 stops for the Panthers.

Both teams will have 5 p.m. first kicks coming up on Monday, with Genesee Valley/Belfast continuing the road swing into Bolivar-Richburg, while Houghton Academy looks to get back on track with Northstar in town for a visit.

Cuba-Rushford 4, Andover/Whitesville 0

CUBA — Cuba-Rushford recorded 10 shots on goal, and nearly half of them found their way into the back of the net, as Logan Lewis led the Rebels offense with a pair to help set the tone in their 4-0 home shutout over visiting Andover/Whitesville on Saturday.

Helping the cause along the way were Jacob Smith and Hunter Rix, who had a goal each in the Rebels’ (3-2) 10-3 outshooting on offense over Andover/Whitesville.

Jarrett Campbell picked up the shutout in between the posts for the Rebels, making all three stops while Landon Ordway made six stops for Andover/Whitesville (1-5).

Both teams are back in action Monday night, as Cuba-Rushford pays a visit to the Lion’s Den to take on Wellsville, while Andover/Whitesville heads back to Whitesville to welcome in Scio.

Fillmore 10, Ellicottville 1

ELLICOTTVILLE — Four different Eagles scorers found the back of the net at least twice during the team’s road trip to Ellicottville on Saturday, as Zach Sisson, Mitch Ward, Jack Cool and Brent Zubikowski helped Fillmore unleash an offensive attack that saw them eclipse double digits on the day, soaring toward a 10-1 victory.

Carter Sisson and Eben Schilke each followed with a goal of their own to finish the goal scoring for the Eagles (5-2), who scored seven of their 10 goals in the second half. Sisson would deal out three assists to finish his five point day, while Ward and Schilke each had two assists, and Zach Sisson and Damon Wood provided a helper of their own.

The Fillmore offense totaled 28 shots on the Ellicottville cage across 80 minutes. On the other end, Graham Cahill earned the win with four saves.

On Monday, the Eagles will continue their road swing into Jasper-Troupsburg with a 5 p.m. contest against the Wildcats.

GIRLS SOCCER

Bolivar-Richburg 4, Canisteo-Greenwood 3

CANISTEO — With a 2-1 overtime loss to the hands of Wellsville now in the rearview mirror, the goal for the Lady Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg was simple: rebound.

A road trip to Canisteo-Greenwood was in store for Saturday morning, and it was a chance to make some noise early. In the first half, the Lady Wolverines would do just that, scoring the first four goals in a row. Despite the lead being chipped away in the second half, they would hang on in the end and return home victorious with a 4-3 win over the host Lady Redskins.

The Harris siblings had a hand in all four goals for the Lady Wolverines (3-2), with McKinlee scoring a pair and Madigan dishing out two assists, including on McKinlee’s first goal just past the 10 minute mark, as Madigan provided a perfect throw-in to McKinlee’s feet, burying it a short time later to break the ice.

Near the midway point, Madigan Harris was credited with her second assist after her initial shot was applied onto the Canisteo-Greenwood cage. It was finished off by Kayli Giardini on the other side to extend the Bolivar-Richburg lead to a pair. Inside the final 10 minutes of the half, Malayna Ayers grabbed her first of the season from a McKinlee Harris helper with 8:21 to go.

McKinlee would then record her second and final goal of the game to earn a 4-0 lead just 90 seconds later, as Teegan Sibble recorded an assist of her own to complete the play. With 1:09 left to play, the Lady Redskins began a stretch of goals themselves, building momentum with their shutout-ending goal from Kennedy Richardson.

The pressure would be mounted on the Lady Wolverines in the second half, as Canisteo-Greenwood scored back-to-back goals from Lila Rexford and Kendal Button in 90 seconds to cut the deficit down to one, but in the end, was not enough to overcome, as Bolivar-Richburg managed to hang onto victory.

The Lady Wolverines were outshot by the Lady Redskins by a 13-9 count. In goal, Madison Carney tallied her first win of the season behind a nine-save effort.

Tuesday night, the Lady Wolverines return home to host Genesee Valley/Belfast in a 5 p.m. contest.

It was completed in the last two rounds with Fillmore and then the Lady Panthers of Campbell-Savona in the fourth and final game of the day, surviving a first-set battle with the Lady Eagles to record their third straight-set win by a 25-21, 25-10 count before toppling the Lady Panthers by a 25-11, 25-14 decision to win in all in the end.

“The girls played some excellent volleyball today. Everyone got a chance to play, and they all continued to play hard as the day went on. As I’ve said before, I could not be more proud of them.” said Lady Lions coach Shannon Steiner.
