Saturday Roundup: Lady Lions capture A-L Tourney title; C-R wins 5th straight Scio Christmas title

ALLEGANY — The final minute of Saturday afternoon’s Battle In The Swamp title game kept the fans in attendance on the edge of their seat. One after another, free throws were made between both Wellsville and host Allegany-Limestone.

With Regan Marsh sinking one-of-two at the line to give the Lady Lions the lead, Allegany-Limestone’s Tierney Hemphill countered with a one-of-two outing at the charity stripe herself to tie the game at 37 with under 30 seconds left to play.

When the dust finally settled with five seconds to go, Marley Adams had the last shot after being fouled, putting it away with ease to give Wellsville the Battle In The Swamp Tournament crown behind a 38-37 edge.

“When you think about the youth of our team, and the situation we were in tonight, they handled it very well,” Lady Lions coach Michelle Alvord said. “We were composed, and we didn’t let it startle us. After the game, the girls had tears of joy and they were excited. In the moment, they really took care of the ball, and they responded well. They didn’t get frazzled, even being down by a couple of points.”

The comeback victory ignited after the Lady Gators provided a huge 18-point third quarter to go ahead of Wellsville (4-1) by three into the last eight minutes. For the most part in the fourth, the Lady Lions were able to hold Allegany-Limestone in check with an 11-7 run despite a few back-and-forth affairs throughout that saw a lot of rebounding, and ball advancement.

Inside a balanced Wellsville scorebook, it was Marley Adams that earned MVP honors within the tournament, as she recorded eight team-high points, including her game-winning, go-ahead free throw with 5.2 seconds left to play. She also added five assists, and four rebounds. Emily Costello had seven points, and five rebounds to add, while Regan Marsh and Kaylee Coleman were busy off the glass with eight boards each.

Along with an MVP nod for Adams, Marsh also picked up an All-Tournament selection for Wellsville.

With the win, a youthful Lady Lions squad is off to a 4-1 start on the season entering Tuesday’s road contest at Letchworth. Alvord says that the team’s confidence continues to grow after each game.

“I am really pleased with our start, and win or lose, we get more confident every game,” she said. “Learning from this type of game, and the atmosphere that comes with it, it’s huge. It prepares us for down the road, but I like seeing this confidence continuing to improve. The more we have that, the better we will be as the season goes on.”

Tip-off for Tuesday’s game is slated for a 7 p.m. start.

SCIO — You know the old saying: “defense wins championships”?

Saturday night, the Lady Panthers put together a strong third quarter to tie the Scio Christmas Tournament title game up with Cuba-Rushford.
