Local track squads begin gearing up for 90th Annual Wellsville Spring Day this weekend, as Wellsville & GV/Belfast visit B-R, C-R & Fri/Scio meet Fillmore at Houghton U

BOLIVAR — One of the most glorified events on the area’s big stage is about to harness the track and field spotlight all Saturday long. Yes, you guessed it. Spring Day is officially upon the horizon.

The countdown is on, but in order to prepare for the biggest meet of the season, all six local track teams had to make sure they were warm and ready to go. Among them were the host Lions, who joined Genesee Valley/Belfast on a trip to Bolivar-Richburg on Thursday. At the end of the night, they would ensure that they were all systems go for the weekend, as they used a plethora of first place finishes from both the boys and girls teams to ignite a highly successful evening over the road.

The boys dominated much of the action over Genesee Valley/Belfast and Bolivar-Richburg with 14 first place finishes, with Ayden Faulkner, Noah Joslyn, Xavier Scott, Grady Ball and JT Mariotti all leading the way for the Lions, each posting at least a pair of first place finishes across the meet. Scott was the team’s best performer with three of those wins himself, medaling with wins in the 100 dash, 110 hurdles and long jump.

Faulkner added into the fray with his two wins in the 400 sprint and triple jump — an event he tied with Genesee Valley/Belfast’s Thayne Cobb. Joslyn took his winning ways to the track with triumphant times in the 800 sprint and 1600 run. Mariotti followed with a win on each side of the spectrum, garnering top finishes in the 400 hurdles and pole vault, while Ball swept both throwing events from the field, taking winning distances in the shot put and discus. Kamron Dodge had the team’s last individual win from the track, medaling in the 3200 run.

Wellsville also picked up a pair of relay wins along the way, scoring first in the 400 and 3200 relays.

Genesee Valley/Belfast followed behind with three first place finishes for their boys team, collected by Thayne Cobb and Brayden Cooper individually, with Cobb placing first in the 200 dash, as well as joining Faulkner in the tie at the top in the triple jump, while Cooper soared towards triumph in the high jump. The two racers would also race a pair of legs in the team’s lone relay victory alongside Damien Rinker and Sal Gambino, as they all converged to produce a winning 1600 relay time.

On the girls side, the Lady Lions continued stringing the wins together to finish off a phenomenal day, as they recorded 10 first place finishes, propelled by a complete sweep of all three relay events — the 400, 1600 and 3200 relays.

Leading the individual wins was Kaylee Oswald, who brought out the brooms in both throwing events from the field, as she posted winning distances in both the shot put and discus. From the track, the sweeping brushed on towards the hurdling events, as both Maddie Muurisepp and Talia O’Connor took first in both the 100 and 400 hurdles. Adding wins from the track were Edahlia Sebastian (100 dash) and Ella Green (1500 run), while Addy Clark finished off the victories from the field in the pole vault.

Both Genesee Valley/Belfast and Bolivar-Richburg girls scored three first place finishes to follow behind Wellsville, with the host Lady Wolverines recording their wins from Nadia Baldwin (400 sprint), Kyla Gayton (high jump) and Brena Walp (triple jump). As for Genesee Valley/Belfast, they saw Sophie Zillgitt record a pair of wins, one from each side of the meet, medaling in the 800 sprint and long jump, while Sophia Gambino rounded off with her individual win in the 200 dash.

All three teams will now speed ahead into Saturday’s 90th annual Wellsville Spring Day, with the action all beginning bright and early at 9:30 a.m.

Fillmore sweeps home tri-match with Cuba-Rushford, Friendship/Scio

HOUGHTON — While the competition was heating up over yonder in Bolivar, the race towards Spring Day in Wellsville was also on at Houghton University on Thursday where a complete sweep of the action on all fronts was collected by the host Eagles of Fillmore, as they garnered victories for both boys and girls teams over visiting Cuba-Rushford (69-40, 45-34) and Friendship/Scio (90-22, 49-38).

On the boys side, the Eagles used 12 first place finishes to fuel their triumphant night on both the track and from the field, with Ray Muzaid-Omar becoming the team’s top finisher with three victories from the field, medaling in all three jumps — the high jump, long jump and triple jump. Muzaid-Omar also ran the first leg in one of the team’s two winning relays, as he helped Henry Sardina, Ben Beardsley and Ernie Lipscomb all glide towards triumph in the 1600 relay.

Jayce Ashton recorded a solo sweep of both hurdling events to further Fillmore’s cause, winning in the 110 and 400 hurdles, while Brian Ashton and Kyle Paulsen swept both throwing events, taking the wins in the shot put and discus, respectively. Fillmore would also record their last win in the relay department from the team of Paulsen, Nathan Tanner, Brian Ashton and Gage Hartman in the 400 relay.

Other individual winners for the Eagles include: Henry Sardina in the 400 sprint, Ernie Lipscomb in the 1600 run and Eli Strickland in the 3200 run.

Cuba-Rushford would perform a split of the match, as they took a 72-10 win over Friendship/Scio behind four first place finishes of their own, paced by Ethan Coleman on both fronts, as he garnered medals in the 100 dash and from the field, in the pole vault. Lex Johnson and Riley Wilson rounded off the wins, garnering top finishes in the 200 dash and 800 sprint each.

Friendship/Scio would place third overall with no first place finishes.

From the girls division, the Lady Eagles would continue setting the trend for the program, as they recorded a meet sweep of their own behind five first place finishes. Among them, a sweep of the throwing events by Alex Thur and Sophia Pastorius, as the two garnered winning distances in the shot put and discus events, respectively. On the track, Ava Sylvester and Rachel Hatch each recorded a win, with Sylvester placing first in the 1500 run, while Hatch hurdled her way towards gold in the 100 hurdles.

The Lady Eagles would also see the team of Hatch, Sylvester, Kylie Ackerman and Tenlee Miller all race towards victory in the only relay event of the meet — the 400 relay.

The Friendship/Scio girls placed second overall after they took a narrow three-point, 36-33 edge over the Lady Rebels of Cuba-Rushford, with Lexi Crossley accounting for all three of the team’s first place finishes, scoring winning times in the 100 and 200 dashes to pair alongside with her winning distance from the sand bunker, in the long jump.

Cuba-Rushford placed third overall with two first place finishes, garnered by Sofia Riquelme in the 400 sprint, and from Karleigh Truax in the triple jump.

All three teams will flock to Wellsville tomorrow morning, where they will partake in all-day action to become the best of the best in the area in one of the most prestigious events of the year — the 90th Annual Wellsville Spring Day.
