Tuesday Roundup: Lady Lions survive double OT thriller to pick up 1st win of season over And/Whi; B-R boys tally 8th straight win with home blank of Fri/Scio
WELLSVILLE — It was a midfield battle that would last almost the entire game. On a gorgeous Tuesday evening for some soccer to be played, it would be the only time that Wellsville and Andover/Whitesville would go toe-to-toe this season. And what a game it was.
With a scoreless tie in the books through the first 40 minutes, the next half and beyond brought even more excitement, and maybe a time or two where you would find yourself on the edge of your seat. More of that same feeling would reverberate into nearly 20 minutes of extra time after regulation met its end with a tie still on the board needing to be broken.
Both squads entering the night were still searching for their first win of the season, and with three minutes left in double overtime, the Lady Lions would make sure that they did not have to wait any longer for it.
A mad scramble in front of the Andover/Whitesville goal would develop, as the Wellsville offense intercepted a clear just outside of the 18. It would present an opportunity for an odd rush back into the zone, with a shot creating a back-spinning rebound towards the empty goal. One that Morgan Spicer would rush in and knock home without hesitation and all the pressure parked out front, as Wellsville collected their first win of the season with a 2-1 victory on their home turf.
Before the Lady Lions (1-6-1) had to work through some late game heroics to earn the win, they would have to outlast Andover/Whitesville across a first half midfield battle to set up shop for quick beginnings in the next, as they were the first team to strike in the second half just six minutes in. Garnering that strike was Ayla Faulkner from deep, as she received the ball from 15 yards out, sailing a sharp angle shot in on goal, over the head of Olivia Waters and in to the left side to break the ice.,
The lead would hold for just a while longer before Andover/Whitesville (0-6-1) would find their way onto the board to tie the game up at one with a Maddi Barona-Aiala cross from the left wing working its way out to the front of the Wellsville cage, where a streaking Kennedy Bledsoe would meet the ball on the break, scoring it to the far post on the right side at the 18:29 mark to deadlock the game going forward.
Extra time would come and go all throughout the two overtime sessions before the Lady Lions would find a way to end it with Spicer’s massive game-winner with 3:42 left remaining in double overtime, as Kaylie Fuller helped set up the play with a hard-hit initial shot against Waters — one that would take a direct hit off her mitts, and back towards the goal where Spicer would fly in and hit the empty net through a pair of defenders out front to end the game.
The game saw both Wellsville and Andover/Whitesville combine for 27 total shots on the attack, with the visitors holding a 17-10 advantage at game's end. But it was Makenna Dunbar that would pick up the victory in between the posts, as the Lady Lions keeper made 16 saves, while Waters made eight for Andover/Whitesville.
Both teams are back in action over the road Thursday night, as Wellsville looks to shift the momentum into their 6:30 p.m. contest against the Bath-Haverling Lady Rams, while Andover/Whitesville aims to rebound in their 5 p.m. first kick at Cuba-Rushford.
Jasper-Troupsburg 1, Genesee Valley 0
TROUPSBURG — The Genesee Valley/Belfast ladies produced a large amount of fire across the field over the road on Tuesday, launching shots one after another at the Jasper-Troupsburg net. Fortunately for the Lady Wildcats, they were up for the challenge on defense.
As for their offense, consistency would pay a ton of dividends.
The Lady Wildcats used their consistency to their advantage. With the door beginning to close in the second half, they would open it back up again with the game’s lone goal — one of just two shots recorded in the entire 80 minute contest, as they held on all the way until the end to pick up the 1-0 shutout at home.
Emily McCaig was responsible for giving Jasper-Troupsburg the victory during the early stages of the second half, finding the back of the net on a solo rush into the Genesee Valley/Belfast (5-2) net just over six minutes after the kick at center to give them a lead that was threatened, but never lost to secure the win.
Despite the loss, Genesee Valley/Belfast heavily outshot the Lady Wildcats by a 15-2 total count. All 15 saves were stopped by Kahley Stewart in between the posts for the hosts, while Ashley Burrows made one stop on the other end for the visitors.
Up next for Genesee Valley/Belfast is a trip back home on Thursday, as they prepare to welcome in Friendship/Scio for a 7 p.m. battle in Belfast.
Fillmore 6, Bolivar-Richburg 1
BOLIVAR — The Lady Eagles of Fillmore continue to play at the top of their game on Tuesday, rolling out a fast start against host Bolivar-Richburg and never looking back from it, as they picked up their seventh straight win to open up the season by a 6-1 count over the road at Dunsmore-Latimer Field.
Out of the six goals scored by the Lady Eagles (7-0), four of them were posted in the first half of play with the opener being scored just six minutes in off a penalty kick opportunity. Electing to take the shot was Hope Russell, who wasted no time scoring it to the right side of the Bolivar-Richburg cage to break the ice.
A midfield battle would develop from that point until the Lady Wolverines (4-5) navigated their way onto the board to tie the game past midway, as Madigan Harris finished off a direct kick in front of the Fillmore goal launched in by Allison Zilker at the 14:10 mark. It would remain deadlocked at one on each side until the Lady Eagles went on the fast break.
Three goals in the last nine minutes of the half would reach the back of the net for the Lady Eagles, with their go-ahead tally stemming from a Grace Russell send in to Delaney Hillman who stood 20 yards out from the net, sailing a shot straight in on goal and into the net at the 9:05 mark.
On the next two goals, Grace and Hope Russell would have a hand in the scoring themselves, interchanging on the team’s third and fourth goals to close out a raucous final sequence to the first half.
The Lady Eagles added to their lead two more times in the first 10 minutes of the second half to close up shop, scoring both goals in a 49-second span with Malory DeRock capitalizing off a rebound off the goal post, while Hope Russell scored her third goal of the game off an Allison Mills send into the offensive zone a short time later. The team would collect 16 shots on offense, while holding the Lady Wolverines to just two in return on defense.
In goal, Preslee Miller made one stop to record the win, while Malayna Ayers made 10 stops for the Lady Wolverines, who will look to rebound on the road Saturday morning in a 10 a.m. contest against Port Allegany.
Fillmore will hit the road themselves coming up on Thursday for a 7 p.m. contest under the lights at Allegany-Limestone.
BOYS SOCCER
Bolivar-Richburg 4, Friendship/Scio 0
BOLIVAR — It may have taken some time for the engines to Bolivar-Richburg’s explosive offense to get going. But once it did, there was simply no stopping it.
With a first half lead in hand to carry into the break, the Wolverines began to jet and fire on all cylinders. After battling through the midfield with visiting Friendship/Scio, the goals would soon come, scoring three more in the last 20 minutes of play, two of them off the foot of Reiss Gaines who would finish off yet another hat trick to catapult the team towards their eighth straight victory by a 4-0 count on Tuesday.
The first strike for Gaines and the Wolverines (8-0) came just past midway of the opening half off a play that started with a magnificent block by Aydin Sisson off an attempted clear by the Friendship/Scio defense. After the block, the ball was sent along to a streaking Gaines in on goal, working it past the goalkeeper and into the net to open the scoring.
Later on in the second half, Gaines would create even more openings in the Friendship/Scio (1-5) defense with two additional markers to complete his hat trick, with the first being started by Ryder Easton, as the ball was jarred loose for Gaines to carry in all by his lonesome to branch the lead to a pair, and then three just seven minutes later on a full 80-yard sprint down the field off a big ball from David Baldwin.
That stemmed off a potential deficit-cutting direct kick in front of the Bolivar-Richburg goal, which was blocked in front and sent to the near end line, where Baldwin provided full force on his kick down the field to Gaines, working the ball past defenders on the way in for the score to complete an epic sequence at the 21:08 mark, for a 3-0 lead.
The scoring concluded with Noah Little reaching the board himself with 6:45 left to play, as he helped the Wolverines with one final capitalization in front of the net on a nifty cross to the front of the goal by Baldwin on his way out of bounds, scoring to the left side of the cage to cement their victory once and for all.
Bolivar-Richburg outshot Friendship/Scio by a 13-3 total count, with David Abdo making all three stops to record the shutout. On the other end, Landon Arnold made nine stops for the visitors, who hop right back onto the field back over the road tonight with a 6:30 p.m. battle at Hammondsport.
On Friday, the Wolverines will continue their homestand with another 7 p.m. tussle under the lights, as they prepare to host Genesee Valley/Belfast.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Wellsville 3, Cuba-Rushford 1
WELLSVILLE — After dropping the night’s opening set to the hands of the Lady Lions of Wellsville, visiting Cuba-Rushford bounced back to tie the match with the closest of set wins the night would see between the two foes in their Tuesday meeting inside the Lion’s Den.
With some newly-founded momentum now loaded into their wheelhouse, the Lady Lions would ultimately find a way to seize all control of the contest after the fact, as they went back to work on overloading the floor against the Lady Rebels with a dominant finish in the third set to set up what would be a four-set win by a 25-16, 23-25, 25-13, 25-18 count to record their fourth win in first five matches.
The Lady Lions (4-1) provided a solid offensive service on the floor to counter the Lady Rebels at the net, with Lindsey Stuck (four aces) and Bryanna Moultrup (three aces) each leading the team with five team-high kills. Not far behind was Averee Palmatier, who added in five digs on defense to pair with her four kills. Helping set up everything up front was Maddy Parks, as she handed out 28 helpers to couple with seven aces.
Wellsville would gain a lead by as much as five in the opening set coming down the home stretch. With an 18-13 lead in hand, the Lady Lions provided a fierce ending to take the game’s first decision with seven of the last 10 points going their direction. Cuba-Rushford (2-3) would make up for it immediately after in the next set, as they took the Lady Lions the distance victoriously to tie the match at one.
But all momentum by the Lady Rebels was erased and seized by Wellsville for the remainder of the match, as the Lady Lions went back to work on back-to-back wins to close out the night, including a 25-13 third set win to completely shift all momentum.
The Lady Rebels were led by Bri Green at the net, who tallied a game-high 12 kills to go with four aces and a block. Lilah Stroud added in eight kills of her own, while Lauren O’Keefe (four kills, three aces) had five digs to pace the defensive efforts. Setter Kendall Tompkins handed out 28 assists to her teammates while producing three digs and two aces along the way to further the team’s cause even more.
Coming up on Thursday, the Lady Lions will go for their fifth win in first six games over the road with a 7:30 p.m. visit to Genesee Valley/Belfast, while Cuba-Rushford’s road swing continues this weekend with a 2:30 p.m. matinee in Fillmore on Saturday.
Fillmore 3, Hinsdale 1
HINSDALE — There was some extremely close volleyball being performed by both Fillmore and Hinsdale, Tuesday night. With half of the match’s sets seeing extra serves — the first giving off a great start, and the next time, a match-saving rebound.
Despite pushing Hinsdale to the brink right away, the third set would help them remain alive in the match. In the end, the Lady Eagles would find a way to prevail in the end with a dominant fourth-set finish to take the 3-1 victory over the road against the Lady Bobcats, in a 27-25, 25-14, 26-28, 25-15 decision.
Fillmore (3-2) saw Skylar Gaddy take charge of the offense, producing a game-high six kills to pair with five aces. Adding more fuel to the fire along the way was Jenna Austin, who had four kills while Ava Sylvester (three aces) rounded off with two. From the service line and at the front, Zoe Hubbard provided a brilliant outing for the Lady Eagles, handing out 15 assists to pair with nine aces. Sawyer Pomeroy concluded with six more aces to add.
Statistics for the Lady Bobcats (1-4) were not made available upon publication. Hinsdale will return to their home floor Thursday night with a 6 p.m. first serve against Archbishop Walsh.
Fillmore’s road swing shifts into tonight, as they hop back on the bus for a 7 p.m. contest at Arkport/Canaseraga.
Canisteo-Greenwood 3, Genesee Valley/Belfast 0
BELMONT — For the second time this season, a dominant performance put on by Canisteo-Greenwood set the tone on Tuesday over the road, as they powered their way towards another straight-set victory against host Genesee Valley/Belfast, exiting town with a 3-0 sweep in their back pocket.
Set scores were not made available upon publication.
Genesee Valley/Belfast (0-6) was led by the offense of Madison McKenzie, who scored a team-high seven kills and one ace. Setter Cassidy Hand chipped in with eight assists, pairing them with two kills, two aces and two denials.
“I think we have been playing much better and I can see improvement in our abilities,” said GV/Belfast coach Darren Bradt. “I am excited to see where we go next. Every game was close, and we established leads. We just need to sure up some mistakes to get us over the edge. It will be a tough game Thursday against Wellsville but I'm excited to see how we rise up to the challenge.”
Next up on Thursday is a 7:30 p.m. home contest for Genesee Valley/Belfast, as they welcome in the Wellsville Lady Lions for action.

Lady Sea Lions remain unbeaten after tough tussle with Livonia
WELLSVILLE — For many seasons, the Lady Sea Lions have fallen before what has been the cream of the crop in Section V for so long in the water — the Livonia Lady Bulldogs. But now, the tables have turned, with Wellsville returning the favor themselves in recent seasons.
That was no different when the two met once again in Wellsville on Tuesday, as the Lady Sea Lions started the meet on another strong note against Livonia, setting the pace with wins in five of the first six events to go forth and take complete charge of a 108.5-76.5 triumph — their fourth straight to start their back-to-back Sectional title defense.
Seven individual victories and a pair of relay triumphs were the end result for the Lady Sea Lions (4-0), with Grace Kinnicutt finding herself at the front of the pack with two of them, as she scored winning times in the 200 freestyle and later, in the 100 breaststroke. Morgan Mattison and Kaylee Oswald would close out a strong start to the meet in the first half with two more individual wins for the team, as Mattison took gold in the 200 individual medley, while Oswald topped the charts with a winning score off the Diving board.
The Lady Sea Lions would garner two relay wins out of three, as they fueled their start with a 200 medley relay win, and then ended the night on the strongest of notes with a 400 freestyle relay triumph. Other individual winners for Wellsville include: Isabelle Hart in the 100 butterfly, Hayden Waldon in the 500 freestyle and Tiernee Brandes in the 100 breaststroke.
Wellsville dives back into the pool on Monday over the road, as they begin preparations for a 5 p.m. swim at Salamanca.
