Tuesday Roundup: Fillmore staves off late 4th quarter rally by B-R to move to 3-0; Lady Lions set tone early in home win against Andover

BOLIVAR — A late rally by the Wolverines in the second half set up what came to be an exciting conclusion to Tuesday night’s clash with visiting Fillmore.

After a third quarter run cut down the lead to a single possession, the Eagles and Wolverines engaged in a back-and-forth battle right down to the wire. With seconds remaining, and a 55-52 Fillmore lead on the clock, the hosts controlled the final possession of the game. Brayden Ellis gave one last heave to the ball for Bolivar-Richburg from three-point range, but the shot could not go in the end, as Fillmore managed to hang on for the win.

“I was impressed with the way they played,” Wolverines coach Jeff Margeson said. “They looked the best they’ve looked so far this year. It was a track meet, and the kids wanted the game to play out this way. We tried matching with them, but we didn’t have the numbers to do that. These kids play with so much heart, and everyone pitched in on both sides, especially on defense. Randy’s (Crouch) is a great coach, and those kids are very athletic and disciplined, and we knew that coming in.”

Before Bolivar-Richburg (1-2) put their rally on display, they had to fight through a battle in the first half, with Camdyn MacDonell exploding out of the game with 15 of the team’s 26 first half points coming from underneath and at the line. As a result, they hung right with the Eagles despite deficits of three after the first quarter, and eight heading into the break.

But adjustments were made by Fillmore (3-0), as MacDonell was virtually shut off from the offense for the Wolverines in the second half, scoring his remaining six points across the last 16 minutes. But it would open the scoring up for Landon Danaher, who became the leader in the pack after the break, netting 20 points in total that included an effort that did not go unnoticed.

“Camdyn had 15 of his 21 points in the first half, and that got us going,” Margeson said. “We did a good job doing that, but Fillmore made the adjustments right after halftime, and we could not find a way to keep him going. But we did manage to get Landon open for his looks, and the guys gave it to him. Landon kept us in it at the end.”

But it all came down to massive three-pointers - a perk that the Eagles carried with them in the second half, launching six of them in all with Colby Wolfer sinking three to lead the department. But it was Will Roeske that led the scoring, netting two threes himself to pace a balanced Fillmore bench with a team-high 12 points. Walters finished with 11, while Mitch Ward and Hayden Rust each had nine points.

Following MacDonell’s game-high 21 points, and Danaher’s 20-point effort for the Wolverines, was Wyatt Karnuth, who had seven more points to chip in.

Both teams are back in action Thursday, with the Eagles continuing their road swing into Cuba-Rushford to visit the Rebels in a 7:30 p.m. contest. As for the Wolverines, they head out on the road for a 3:30 p.m. contest against the Olean Huskies.

ANDOVER — Both Whitesville and Andover battled tooth and nail through the majority of the game, but there was only one difference maker across the 32 minutes — the first eight.

After the Jays cut their deficit down to six at the half, Andover’s start proved to be just enough, as they held Whitesville to just five points across their 14-5 first quarter run that kept them in front until the end, as they took the 49-43 advantage on Tuesday.

The game for Andover (2-0) was partially won off the glass, with their top three scorers combining for nearly 40 rebounds off the glass. Cuba-Rushford 59, Genesee Valley 38

CUBA — Despite a slow start to their game in the early-going of Tuesday night’s battle with Genesee Valley, the Rebels of Cuba-Rushford shook it off to take a first half lead into the break. Even though the Jaguars were able to cut away at the lead to trail by five heading into the final eight minute period, the hosts saved their best quarter for last.

Up 36-31, Cuba-Rushford ran wild and put together their strongest showing of offense of the night, while holding Genesee Valley in check on the other end, as they established a massive 23-7 fourth quarter run to pull away toward victory behind a career night from Jack Frank in the team’s 59-38 triumph.

“Jack was huge tonight obviously with hitting some shots, and getting to the free throw line,” Rebels coach Bryce Ryan said. “He can be really crafty. The first half, we struggled a big offensively. We really didn’t move the ball well and settled on many quick jump shots. I thought we played with better patience and took what the defense gave us in the second half. Defensively, we were more active and we created turnovers. I was pretty pleased with how we played with that, and we have to keep that kind of focus from the jump.”

Frank, from start to finish, provided a career night for the Rebels (2-1), finding his rhythm from downtown, while converting multiple shots at the charity stripe, concluding with a game-high 29 point effort that saw him net five of Cuba-Rushford’s eight three-pointers as well as a 10-for-15 outing at the line. Landon Wight had the remaining three-pointers to put toward his 11-point effort, while Trent Chamberlain also had 11 points.

Genesee Valley (0-3) was led by Austin Murphy, who recorded a team-high 12 points. Riley Gordon provided nine points, while Trent Scott had five points all from the stripe to assist the Jaguars, who trimmed the lead down to five with a 16-point third quarter.

Both teams are back on the floor Thursday night in a pair of 7:30 p.m. contests, with the Rebels remaining put at home to host the unbeaten Fillmore Eagles, winners of their first three games, while the Jaguars look to get their first win back on the road in Wellsville.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Wellsville 46, Andover 11

WELLSVILLE — With big games against Fillmore and Olean coming up on the horizon, the Lady Lions of Wellsville used the past five days to return back to full strength. Tuesday, they did with the return of Marley Adams back on the hardwood in time for their home opener against the Lady Panthers of Andover.

Adams led a balanced Lady Lions attack on the hardwood in her first game of the season, launching two of the team’s five triples on her way to a game-high 14 point performance, as Wellsville rolled their way toward a 46-11 victory over the Lady Panthers.

“Everyone was back tonight, and prior to tonight, we’ve had a couple days of consistency,” said Lady Lions coach Michelle Alvord. “I felt like this was the best game for Brooklyn (Stisser) and Jaelyn (Knapp) so far, and we’re only two weeks in. They played really well on both ends of the floor. It was great to have Marley back in the lineup as well, that really took some of the pressure off both ends of the floor as well.”

The tone was set almost immediately by the Lady Lions (2-1) in the first quarter, as they held Andover to just a pair of baskets from the field while capitalizing on what was a 16-4 lead that they held permanently, only allowing seven more points in the second half after ending the first half with a 10-0 run.

Finishing behind Adams on the floor was Emily Costello, who had two more of Wellsville’s threes to put toward a 10-point effort. Brooklyn Stisser and Emily Robbins each had six points, while Jaelyn Knapp netted five to round off for the hosts in white and orange. On the other side, Livia Simon led the Lady Panthers (1-3) with a team-leading six points. Kelsie Niedermaier had the remaining five to add.
