Section V Independent Baseball League releases All-Star Nominations; Wellsville’s Green named MVP, several other Lions receive 1st, 2nd team nominations

The teams that make up the Section V Independent teams have announced the player of the year and their all-league players.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Alex Green, senior catcher, Wellsville

Green, who will continue his career at Finger Lakes Community College set a school record at the baseball powerhouse with a .541 average. Wellsville has won 15 Section V titles and Green led the Lions to the Class B title this season.

Green is a prototype catcher. Strong, great arm, tremendous receiving and blocking skills and a power hitter who goes to all fields.

He finished the season with three home runs, 11 doubles, a triple, 35 RBI's, 40 hits and struck out just 10 times in 74 at-bats. He had a .595 on base percentage.

FIRST TEAM

Tyler Vogel, Wellsville, junior pitcher, shortstop

Vogel threw a no-hitter to defeat Batavia Notre Dame, 1-0 in the Section V Class B finals. He finished the season 4-1 and struck out 60 in 36.1 innings with an ERA of 1.73. At the plate, Vogel hit .494 with nine doubles, three triples, 40 hits, 25 RBI's, 10 stolen bases and scored 38 runs. He struck out just seven times in 81 at-bats.

Tyler Ashton, sophomore pitcher, Greece Olympia/Odyssey. On the mound, Tyler had two wins for the Greece Griffins and struck out 38 in 28 innings. He stole seven bases, hit two doubles and drove in seven runs.

Cooper Brockway, senior pitcher, SS, Wellsville. Brockway moved from the leadoff spot as a junior to cleanup and hit .517 with two triples, 30 hits, 27 runs, 25 RBI's, 14 stolen bases and a .651 on base percentage. On the mound, Brockway went 5-1 with 37 K's in 30.1 innings.

Kyle Dredger, sophomore infielder, Bloomfield. Kyle hit .400 batting average in 78 plate appearances and had a .500 OBP with 26 hits, eight doubles, three triples and 12 RBI's. At second base he played the entire season without an error, and had 16 putouts and a double play.

Aiden Cowburn, junior infielder, pitcher, Wellsville. Cowburn led the Lions with 41 runs and 27 stolen bases while hitting .442 with seven doubles and a triple. On the mound he went 3-0 with 40 strikeouts in 31.1 innings.

Morgan McLaughlin, junior, Bloomfield. McLaughlin threw 49.2 innings and struck out 83, winning two games with a 3.50 ERA> He hit .250 with 13 hits and two doubles.

Gavin Haggerty, junior pitcher, OF, Wellsville. Haggerty was a perfect 5-0 on the mound for the Section V champions with a 2.44 ERA. He struck out 20 batters and only walked eight all season.

Matt Jason, junior, Greece Odyssey/Olympia. Jason hit .290 with four doubles, had a .435 on base percentage, drove in seven runs and walked 12 times.

Trent Green, sophomore CF, pitcher, Wellsville. Green hit .417 with three triples, four doubles, 27 RBI's and scored 28 runs. On the mound, he was 2-0 with 29 strikeouts in 15.1 innings with a team-leading ERA of 1.37. He had one save and walked just seven in seven relief appearances. He had four assists in centerfield.

Levi Gumaer, catcher, Bloomfield. He caught every inning of every game all season with a remarkable 995 fielding percentage. In his 132.1 innings caught he threw out 10 runners attempting to steal. At the plate, he hit .236 with a .400 slugging percentage including three doubles, two home runs, 13 RBI's and 17 runs.

SECOND TEAM

Curtis Welker, junior pitcher, Greece Griffins. Welker had two wins and struck out 27 in 27 innings. He ripped four doubles, had seven RBI's and stole five bases.

Matt Ritter, sophomore, OF-C, Wellsville. Ritter hit .370 with a home run, eight doubles and 18 RBI's. He scored 27 runs and stole seven bases. Ritter had three assists from the outfield.

Gunner Vogel, centerfielder, Bloomfield. Gunner had 26 putouts and a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage during an error-free season. He hit .280 with 21 hits, six doubles and 12 RBI's.

Karson Grover, 1B, pitcher, junior, Wellsville. Teams hit a team-low .115 against him as he went 1-0 with 19 strikeouts in 9.2 innings and gave up just three hits and three total runs. At the plate, Grover hit .390 with three doubles, a triple, 26 RBI's and stole 10 bases with 17 runs and 23 hits.

Grady Rogers, shortstop, Bloomfield. Rogers is a slick-fielding shortstop who started every game and only made seven errors for an .891 fielding percentage. He turned six double plays, had 64 chances, 36 assists and 21 putouts. At the plate he had 16 hits and two doubles.

Joe Walsh, Bloomfield. On the mound, Walsh threw 36 innings with a 1-1 record and a save. He struck out 46 and had a 2.58 ERA. He hit .280 with seven hits.
